SOLVED: How to Fix a Broken Shark Steam Mop

- I never used distilled water in my Shark Steam Mop and after a few years, my steam mop stopped producing steam. I searched online for an answer and tried them all. Luckily one of the solutions worked for me and that was the CLR soak. I filled my Shark Steam Mop with a 50/50 solution of water and CLR and let it sit for several hours. You can even let it sit for a day. Watch the videos to see me results. By the way, I also tried a q-tip / pipe cleaner, white vinegar, and washing out the inlet / outlet of the steam mop with hot water.

Added some vinegar a couple of hours ago and walked away, leaving the experiment in the bathroom. Just heard a burst of activity. Took me a second to realize what the noise was. Steam!
Just used distilled white vinegar in mine and within a few minutes a huge burst of steam came out! Yayyy! I was ready to throw it away.. youtube is awesome 😊

My Shark is a Lift-a-way professional model and the outlet on the tank is in the upright position, therefore I inverted the machine, and let it sit overnight with a CLR mixture in it. Machine worked in the morning within about 45 seconds. THANKS, I was ready to throw it out!
I just tried this, worked PERFECTLY in less than 20 minutes. Thanks for posting! People may want to make sure to do this outside if possible the CLR steam the first comes out when you test it really lingers in the air.

This worked! I had not used my steam mop pro in years and was ready to chunk it. I let the CLR sit for a few hours and nothing. I just let it stay and when I tried to use it the next day, it worked! Worked for me! Had to leave the CLR overnight in the water tank then plugged it in in the morning & after a few minutes, steam was bursting out! Will never make the mistake of putting tap water in the mop!! It must be distilled! Thank you
I tried Commercial white vinegar & it still did not work. I used the half CLR & water, recommended, on this video. Not wanting the fumes in my home, I hung my steam cleaner on a hook in the garage (door open). Ran on high for 4 minutes & Poof--lots of steam. Shut off & let the solution sit for 3 hrs. Turn back on, run the solution out, then run a full tank of clear distilled water. Now it is like new. Thanks PROVEN HELPER.
This worked like MAGIC! I put some CLR in the steamer, let it sit overnight, and in the morning it took a little pumping, then WAM, a big burst of steam along with some yellow/brown residue from the lines. I flushed the CLR out several times and loaded with plain water - perfect!

Great advice, thanks very much. I tried unblocking the nozzle with a wire -- that was unsuccessful, but a 50-50 mixture of distilled vinegar and water worked like a charm after about 10 seconds -- I tested it in the sink, just as well because there was a sudden large burst of steam.

I ran into this problem today. I did exactly as you suggested. The 'shaking' or in my case firmly rapping it against the floor as I was shaking seemed to really entice the steam to come out. However, I had to allow mine to sit a couple of hours longer than you. Our water is very very hard. Thanks!
Bought an H20x5 at a thrift store that didn't work for $1. They're $120 new. I did half Zep half water - overnight. In the morning it took a while making that chugging sound, but it steamed. The steam side of the white pad had a section that was BLACK. Lex, thanks for this tip!

Did you let the vinegar sit overnight before you tried the CLR? I was going to try having vinegar sit in it overnight first. I have vinegar on hand, but I don't have any CLR.

@@mariesmith8076 I only used distilled water in my Shark steamer, so I don't think mineral deposits is my problem. Did you use distilled water or tap water?

I just applied this repair technique to my Bissell steamer and it worked!! Took less than 5 minutes just by adding distilled vinegar as the gentleman stated. Thanks very much for your video sir. Happy New Year!! 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for this. I used 50/50 White vinegar instead of CLR and it worked within minutes! this vinegar solution is a great cleaner for tile floors, windows, mirrors and hard water stains on faucets and fixtures... natural and not harsh on finishes

I actually came back to comment on this. I got a nice Shark steam mop that operates with a pump from an outlet store (you know, where they sell refurbished or customer returns) and barely did anything! Was going to return for an exchange but tried your CLR trick!! I took about 30seconds and BAM! Soooooo much steam!!! Saved me a trip to the store and the hassle of an exchange/store credit. Thanks!!!!!!!!

I saw this video about a year ago when my steam mop stopped working and I kept forgetting to try the vinegar or the CLR, but I tried the CLR today and within about 5 minutes it started working perfectly!! Thanks so much for this video
I went straight to CLR... It steamed automatically. After about 10min it stopped up again, let it sit, it started again. I will redo and leave it longer. Thank you👍
All I had was apple cider vinegar. After putting that in with no success, I tried to take the bottom panel off to try the bobby pin (my shark design is slightly different than the one in this video.) Halfway through taking the screws out, I pushed down on the handle and steam started pouring out on it's own! Vinegar does work! Thank you so much for the video, I was about to throw it away!

SOLVED!!! All I did was use the CLR half/half mixture and within ten
minutes after plugging in, I started pumping the handle for about 15
minutes and all of a sudden a shot of steam BURST out of the bottom and
the thing is now like new! THANKS!

Ordered the CLR from Amazon, arrived next day. Soaked over night in the CLR where you put the water, give it a shake like Tek said and it still didn't work, took the mop off and the steam was coming out big style, then poured the CLR into the mop fixing and left it for several hours, give it a shake and good rinse through with boiling water from the kettle and whoop whoop it finally worked, full steam ahead, so it was definately limescale so thanks very much for the very informative video and tip....

Thanks so much for this guide. Our second steam mop recently stopped putting out steam. This one was more expensive than the last which had also stopped producing steam. We had chunked the other one, figuring it broke because it was cheap. We were dreading replacing this one because it was more expensive. But thanks to your guide, I tried most of your methods and I don't know if it was a combination or one particular one but all of a sudden, it started to kick out steam! Thanks for saving us a ton of money! xD
This worked! I had to let the mop sit for 2 days and I also fired it up for a couple minutes every few hours. After 2 days using the 50/50 water / CLR solution, it blew open the blockage. Much simpler than taking it all apart.
Thanks for posting! We ended up going with straight vinegar...a few ounces. Let it sit a couple hours, then turned it on and it started working again. Let it continue to sit overnight...steamed it a few more pumps with the vinegar in it. Bam! Good as new.
We poured out the remaining vinegar and rinsed out the reservoir with fresh water. Thanks so much for saving our Shark Mop! Rockstar! :)

This worked for my Shark Steam Vac in under 10 minutes. I used Distilled White Vinegar though and not the CLR. I left my SteamVac on and in the tilt position, and soon I saw a bunch of steam just shoot out. I am so happy that this technique fixed it :)
Mine only took about a third cup of vinegar and just like everybody said big plume of steam pushed and now it out works like new. Thanks
I tried the vinegar thing in mine. I left it soaking over night to no avail however when I poured a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda I with the vinegar and slammed the lid back on quick as there was a foamy eruption pressed the trigger and wahay there was a great whoosh of steam and it works fine now. So, chuffed as monkeys many thanks and hope the bicarb ting works for others 👍😎

I had a long skinny brush I shoved it down in the hole a couple times. It worked well enough to finish the job. I am gonna soak it with Citric acid next. The citric acid works great to unclogged my essential oil diffusers too! Thanks for the video and for all the comments. I was about to go buy a new one, I love my steam mop!

Just tried this with king shark professional steam mop, which I had thought was completely broken. There had been no steam and it was making that thudding noise that it does when the tank is empty. Anyhow, I used white vinegar, let it sit for 5 mins then turned it in and whoosh!! Lots of steam! Thank you for saving my floors that are in dire need of a clean and for saving my mop 👍🏻👍🏻

I mix vinegar and water. Wasn't getting fast enough results. So after watching this video added CLR to the mixture. After 15mins of letting the steamer run the clog was removed. Problem solved!!

Your awesome. Mine quit working. Did half water / CLR .. Plugged it in. Within 2 minutes it started working. Just remember to clean out the tank a few times to get the CLR out before using it for cleaning. It seems to work better then when it was new .. Thanks again ..
Hey guys I just posted an annotation from +renee harris, in the video because she got advice directly from #shark. Here's what they told her:
"take a Bobby pin & bend it straight, plug in my Mop, turn it over, then push the Bobby pin in the hole in the bottom of the Mop, wiggle it back and forth, in & out, and in circular motions to break up the calcium deposits. then I plugged it in pumped it a few times and a bunch of steam came out, she then told me to un plug it and repeat that 3-4 more times. My Mop has been working like its brand new ever since. She also told me to ONLY use distilled water (which you can buy for under a dollar at the store,) or it will happen again". My advice is: JUST BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET HURT BY STEAM!!!

I put 50/50 CLR & water, left it over night. Then, I used the picture wire poke in the hole in the bottom of the mop, wiggled it back and forth, also, in & out Pumped, pumped 5 to 10 times and it worked! and BAM Works just as NEW!!!

please everyone who reads this, make sure your mop is unplugged when you stick in the bobby pin or a paper clip works too. Also, i had several mop heads with mine. The problem was with my mop head, which was clogged. Changing to another mop head work for me. Now I just need to try and get the other mop head uncooked. Thanks for the advice from others, and use distilled water.
I tried the bobby pin - didn't work, but I did notice that nozzle was indeed clogged - I could only dig out a little bit of the clog. Your CLR solver worked in 15 minutes (I posted above).

I held on to my steam mop for years, even though it didn't work, because I loved it so much. Today, following your instructions, I got it to start steaming again. You are wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing.
The C.L.R. treatment worked on my Shark "Genius." One note is that there is a notice on the C.L.R. bottle which says "vapor may be harmful", so I did the treatment outside and rinsed and ran the mop a few times with clean water, after the treatment, before using it, indoors, on the floors again. The C.L.R. loaded steam did smell kinda nasty.

Thank you for this video. I took this thing apart, the mop part and put a pipecleaner into the out let and nothing. I did CLR over night and a few times throughout the day and gave up hope. Was looking up new ones online and decided to give it one more try...HUGE burst of steam and what looked like a whole bunch of rust came out (mildly concerning) but it works now!

I broke the rules and let mine sit for I’m embarrassed to say how long with water in the tank. So I’m trying the 50/50 white vinegar and water now. 5 minutes and nothing. Although seconds after plugging it in it made a loud noise as if about to stream and smelled like steam. But nothing yet.
And did you use the gray bottle of CLR?

I was skeptical about him putting CLR in that steam mom and THEN plugging it in! Glad the steam came out, but I’m sure a toxic cloud was part of that deal. Vinegar is tried n true!

Video was very helpful. When I opened up heat chamber on my unit got about a table spoon of calcium dust out. The real problem was a stopped up inlet valve mister, but after a soak in white vinegar problem was solved. I would recommend pumping liquid through hose into valve with it out of heat chamber. Once flow through this valve was cleared up put unit back together and it worked like new. This unit is 4 years old.

ProvenHelper No we used tap water, which contributed to the problem. Manufacture recommend distilled water and I can see how this would help eliminate or even prevent the blockage, but I wouldn't have gotten to tear it apart and learn how this device works.

I followed your instructions with CRL solution but still nothing. What finally unplugged it was me inserting a
thin nail in the bottom opening and a gush of dirty steam came out. (yes, please wear gloves it's hot)
Now it is as good as new. I am going to use distilled water (from the humidifier) to avoid future clogs.

I looked at 2 different videos and I don't know which did the trick but I first did the CLR for about 2 hours. Still didn't work. I kept pumping every now and then. Then I went to another video where I actually opened up the unit. He showed how to pull each pump out and make sure they were cleared. After putting back together and putting bottled water (never tap), I just kept pumping. Did that for maybe 5 to 10 minutes. Just as I was about to give up it started to steam! I kept pumping to clear internal hoses to push out any remaining calcium gunk. Works like a charm! One suggestion is never use faucet water. Only purified water for any appliances where water is needed. Got a good deal on the steam mop. Only paid $1.65 from Goodwill and a little bit of work. Whoever owned it before probably used tap water and that's what clogged it.
OMG. Vinegar worked within minutes. I was about to get the new one as this stopped steaming. M so happy . I just put half cup vinegar and half cup water and start the mop on medium and after 2 minutes steam came out

Used this on my 3 year old steam mop, thought it was a goner from our 900 mile move. Took about 10 minutes running with 50% LimeAWay and 50% water. Poof, nice steam flow. Thank you!

I tried this on my Shark steam mop which is about 5 years old and was clogged. Vinegar worked a little but best result was with the CLR - I let it sit for 2 days and then got lots of steam!

if you don't use distilled water in your steam mop, it will clog up the holes with minerals that are in the water. That is the whole purpose of using ONLY distilled water. Some major grocery chains sell filtered and distilled water refills for only pennies so you don't have to buy a new jug every time. I've only used distilled water and have had my steam mop for over a year and it has never clogged!
I only use distilled water and it still clogged - really can't understand why.

Always used Distilled water but after a few years the Shark SK460 clogged up. I took the small long bar off which was held on by 4 small Phillips screws and I used a paper clip in the center hole where the steam was suppose to be coming out of and put several ounces of vinegar in the reservoir and it started steaming after about 5 minutes.All seems good now.
I had a very bad clog and this method worked but my mop exploded and the motor went.
If anyone tries this, please keep a safe distance from the mop.
This happened with my old one too. Now I'm on mop #2 and having the same issue. Not sure what to try since I definitely don't want that to happen again!
After pouring about a half cup of calcium deposits into the bath tub the solution emerged-a simple Safety pin. This was the most effective result. Once I took the reservoir housing off and the steamer brush attachment it was clear that the problem stemmed from calcium deposits blocking the pin-hole at the end of the handle assembly. After using a safety pin to free the deposits I soaked the pin-hole in vinegar. Now the Eco works better than new (due to a little trick I am not at liberty to divulge). Get to it!
