    Salem: You know what the difference is between a villain and supervillain? PRESENTATION!

    So I realize that a lot of people have not brought this up. I don't know if anyone did or anyting but I want to point out one thing about Ironwood. His issue is that he has no trust in anything anymore. At least things he cannot control. Ironwood trusted Ozpin he finds out that Ozpin has withheld vital information form him letting him believe that Salem can be defeated/killed.
    He trusted Team Rwby. Team Rwby withheld information that Ozpin knew from him until things started to go bad.
    He trusted his own strength his own power, but that failed him when he realized after his fight with watt's that left him injured that apparently was not enough. That someone was still playing pulling the strings behind his back.
    He trusted his country in his counsel, but they were constantly playing political backstab with him keeping him from doing what was probably the better idea. The problem isn't that he's gone crazy problem is he does not know who to trust anymore but himself the only success he can point out is that hey, I stopped watts I beat watts. I am possibly the only person who I can trust now and that is a scary thing cuz we also have to remember that Ironwood also has PTSD from volume 3. He is scared to fail again. He is scared to be made the one that kills everyone he is scared to become the villain. The saying we become the one thing we fear is very true here.

      You have a very plausible view of Ironwood's situation and I generally agree with it.
      It is too easy to just say Ironwood is a bad guy, always was. As many others in the fandom have tried to say. And I will admit, I went into V7 thinking Ironwood was suspect. But this volume went out of it's way to show Ironwood put a lot of trust in RWBY. (He was desperate to find people he could trust.)
      Taking them in, patching their hurt, providing them with new gear, weapons and the best training. Bringing them into his inner circle, sharing top secret plans and info with them, trusting them on crucial missions and even taking counsel from them as they sorta became his conscious. Only to have that trust burnt down.
      Many in the fandom completely forgot or ignore all of that and simply go for the low hanging fruit. "Ironwood was always a bad guy. Never trusted him. He was crazy. Everyone else was right".

    • @perigraph6644

      @@DocMicrowave , see, I don't think it was a matter of him being a bad guy. It was a matter of him always having a flaw that could be his undoing.
      I can't take issue with Team RWBY withholding information from him in light of what happened at Haven, not when Ironwood kept secrets from Ozpin and undermined his authority before the Vytal Festival. There's still room to make the case that he was correct on both counts. It still made it very difficult to sympathize with him in the moment he declared, "Loyalty ALWAYS matters!"
      The fact that there are people who still take his side shows just how complicated a person he is, possibly the best realized character the show has ever created. It's rough to see what's become of the enthusiasm, energy, and outgoing friendliness he showed back in Volume Two. This man did not take good care of himself. He gets my sympathy for that, even though he's not the only one paying for that neglect.

    • @DocMicrowave
      @DocMicrowave 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      He definitely is flawed. No doubt about it. And I agree that it was probably best for Ruby to be cautious with the info she had on initial contact with Ironwood so that they could feel him out. Find out exactly where he stands. Etc.
      However, once it was clear that Ironwood was the good guy, fully invested in saving the world, and even had what seemed to be a viable plan to do it, Ruby and company should have reciprocated in trust and told him the deal. Especially when it was clear that he would be handicapped in his decision making due to a lack of vital information. There were plenty of opportunities.
      Not wait untill everything is going south, chaos is growing and Salem is practically knocking on the front door.
      Incredulously Ironwood had to discover Ruby's secret about the Lamp During their encounter with Salem's projection. I have to say, I definitely couldn't hold it against him for being a little upset about that.
      From episode 2 I figured he was going to discover the truth at the most in opportune time. I was expecting a riff to form between him and RWBY. I Just didn't know when. But I will say I expected it earlier in the volume. Not coming down to the last episodes.
      I'm guessing the writers intent for dragging the issue this late in the game was to have bigger more dramatic effect on Ironwood with that and everything else coming down on him at the same time. Gives more justification for his mental breakdown.
      At least that's how I see it.

    • @perigraph6644
      @perigraph6644 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DocMicrowave Sure, there were opportunities, and it's clear that that there was disagreement within the group about when Ironwood should have been told more. Oscar didn't want things withheld from Ironwood. Yang had misgivings about it as well. Even Ruby was uncomfortable with this, and she made that decision.
      She didn't stick to it arbitrarily, however. She'd seen his reluctance to trust Robyn and the Council. She'd seen what this was costing Mantle, a city suffering from neglect and unrest. The city wasn't even under martial law when they arrived, but "Failure to cooperate with Atlas military personnel is a punishable offense," was being broadcast across the city and small squads of his robots patrolled together. Notice that they didn't move to accommodate other people in Chapter One: the citizens had to get out of their way.
      Ruby held off on trusting Ironwood with a secret that nearly destroyed everyone else that learned it until she saw him choose to trust others. That was always going to be a big risk. She gave it up when it had to be given up: before he could throw lives away on an impossible task. It may not have been the best time, but I don't think there was ever a good one. Even now, I wonder if it might have been better to have kept him in the dark.
      After all, you'll notice that his rallying speech never told people that Salem can't be killed. You would agree that was probably for the best, right? I'll agree that there's a significant difference: the people on the street will never be in a position to go toe to toe with Salem, or to send strike teams after her. Then again, I'm not sure James will ever tell anyone that secret, not even Winter. He'd probably steer her away from a direct assault on Salem, but not at the expense of revealing that truth.
      It's a subject for debate, but I will point out that Oscar told Ironwood Ruby's secret about the lamp before Salem's projection appeared. From Chapter 9:
      "She...can't be killed? Jinn told you this?"
      "She showed us when we asked what Oz was hiding."
      Not "me". "Us", used in a context that could not be confused for "Ozpin and me".

I highly doubt Penny would be human with the maiden powers. Pietro was able to give Penny part of his aura, so it'd make since that she'd be able to have the maiden powers. Also as long as Penny is with team RWBY, they cant get the relic. I do believe that next volume will be where everyone flees, they don't stand a chance against Salem. Even with a maiden. Plus the maiden powers are the magic given over by Ozma, Salem still has her magic at full, so I'm guessing she is far more powerful than anything we have seen so far. Plus shes from a human timeline where humans were far more powerful than the ones today. Plus she can control all the Grimm, so she wouldnt be by herself fighting the 4 maidens. A fully realised maiden with experience, Salem's thousands of years old, so imagine what's she capable of. she could probably take out two maidens in the first few seconds of the fight , then deal with the other two. A theory/opinion that I and many others have on Ozpin's monologue is that its not directed at Oscar or the audience, its directed at himself. If you look back at volume 6, its explained that the whole reason why Salem hates Ozpin is because he tried to abandon her and their family because he misunderstood what she intended by "replacing humanity" (her intent being to get rid of all the arrogant people and repopulate the world with their children and their followers, which would all but erase humanities flaws and conflicts). If Ozpin did not try to run away then and stayed by her side and guided her, would the world have changed for the better. Now, Salem's humanity has been repressed and her Grimm side has taken over as it feeds off her hatred for Ozpin (since Grimm are drawn to negative emotion). It was clearly stated that Ozpin did not know Salem's full story and all she endured to bring him back. After learning everything from Jinn's vision, he realized that his idea of killing Salem to end all conflict is just a lie he had been telling himself. His purpose was to bring humanity together; Salem included since she is basically a human trapped in the body of a Grimm (this theory about Salem being "saved", not "Killed" is heavily reinforced throughout the series by the words "there will be no victory in strength" and "Strength will not bring Victory"). When Ozpin hid himself away inside Oscar, he was coming to terms with the knowledge that everything he has done up to this point has been wrong. His every plan involved finding a way to kill Salem, but that would solve nothing since you can't kill her, and even if you could, you would be killing an innocent woman who has suffered what no other person should have to endure; and it is somewhat his fault why she is the way she is now. After coming back to reality, Ozpin understands what must be done; he cant change the past but he has a chance to make things right. However, the next big task will be getting the rest of the team to follow his plan, especially Ruby since she currently has nothing but hatred for Salem. The theory is that Ruby will be the one to save Salem since her silver eyes burn away Grimm, not humans, and Salem is a human trapped in the shell of a Grimm. Burn away her outer shell and Salem will be free of the Grimm's influence over her emotions.

    My pet theory is that Ren's meditation training and the flashes he's gotten will evolve his Semblance. He'll be able to sense emotion, as well as mask it. It would give him a counter against Neo, if he can sense her persona regardless of what she looks like. Maybe even Emerald, since her illusions are unlikely to have an emotional state. And it fits his personal arc, more than the other characters he's having to learn to act without denying his emotions.

    I like how Oscar was moved in to the light and Ironwood moved in to the shadow during their interaction. A simple visual reference showing Oscar's still being hopeful and Ironwood's final step in madness. Punctuated with Ironwood shooting Oscar. This is how its going to be, PERIOD! Then Oscar falling in to darkness as he is slipping into sadness of "losing" Ironwood, then bursting in to light again showing all is not lost and there is still hope. Their storytelling is getting more and more refined.
    I almost gave on on RWBY in vol 4. However, now I view RWBY as two connecting stories: RWBY: Posser directed by Monty Oum, and RWBY: Myra directed by Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross. Kind of like The Hobbit and The Lords of the Rings. A fun adventure followed by the serious main story. And with that view point, I now see vol 4 as a intro chapter to the main story and it is pretty good.

    Edit: Also I don't think Salem can brute-force her way through the vault to get the relic, we saw in Volume 5 that the door seemingly opened the way to a pocket dimension where the relic was kept, so I think they HAVE to have Penny present to open the way.

  • @BlaireRabbit1440
    @BlaireRabbit1440 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Ironically, this episode shows that our color theory for the maiden flames effect is actually judged off of their eye color. Cinder? Fire color, same as her eyes. Raven? Red, like her red eyes. Freya? Blue eyes, blue color. Penny? Green, green eyes. Random thought off of that, but they always say that eyes are the windows to the soul, and the maiden powers thing seems to be soul tied.
    Unfortunately, I still think Ironwood would have cooperated, but now? There was just too little, too late. So now Cinder/Salem has a lamp, and she owns the territory where two others are. However, she needs Penny to access the staff; if she didn't, cinder obtaining the maidens would be necessary, and for the relic at beacon, she basically needs Oz to find the vault for her, as she hasn't been able to find that yet. Regardless, I will be very surprised if they can liberate Atlas at this point. They may try, but I wonder if Penny tries to help, if she'll die again, resulting in the maiden powers going to someone else and she'll have to be rebuilt a final time? That would allow Atlas to fall. Otherwise........Will they try to go to Vacuo? I can't believe they'd do that right away, but at this point, they don't have a whole lot of choices.

    I called Penny becoming a maiden back in Volume 3 when we first learned about the maidens. The reason I figured that was going to happen is because I asked myself "why did Ironwood make a young women robot... someone that is actually a person.... someone that has a soul.... someone that can't die of old age.... there is a maiden that is wounded..... hmmmmmm." It was Ozpin's call to use Pyrrah anyways. I thought Ironwood had a different plan. When Penny died later that season I figured I was wrong but when she was rebuilt in Volume 7 I knew it was going to happen. The emotional conflict between Winter and her only bolstered that idea.

      Yeah it's possible she won't be able to. Remember, the vaults are specific to the maidens. Oz can't just open them himself, and one maiden can't open another's vault. So it's possible Salem can't get in.
      And she can't just brute force into the vault, since the vaults are clearly portals or pocket dimensions of some sort.

    On another note, Penny is definitely still a robot. When she checks whether Fria is dead or not you can see the metal of her hand, I'm pretty sure, and she was looking at that same hand when she's on the ship with Team RWBY and ALPN(minus the P(Oscar) or maybe not, cuz Penny can also count as a P, but you get the point).

    I predict that season 8 starts with Atlas and Mantle are destroyed in the first episode. The SDC destroyed, Whitley, Willow, Winter, and Papa Schnee all killed leaving Weiss and orphan with no blood family left, the Schnee family butler that everyone likes killed, Team FNKY killed, the rest of the Ace Ops killed, Salem gets both the staff and the lamp relics, Ironwood dies like a champ defending the staff and is killed by Salem personally, Atlas falls onto Mantle and all the citizens in both cities die, the Atlas military fights valiantly but is overwhelmed and destroyed, Amity Colosseum is destroyed along with any hope of reconnecting the people of the world. The only ones to survive and escape are the main cast characters on that little airship, Oscar, and maybe Qrow. They all watch from a distance as everything is destroyed and there was nothing they could do about it, realizing that they failed, that they were naive, and that Ironwoods final plan would have at least saved some of the people. Total, overwhelming victory for Salem in Atlas right from the start of the season.

    Hio so mutch happend this episode^^. I woud say that Penny is the wintermaiden is the final proof that she is a real girl (still a robot but real^^). I guess that Ospin "seald" most of his power into his cane so that his new body (by reincanation) not have to much power bevor they mearched together, that is the reason why i think that green shield was part of his power and not Oscars semblence. I hope Neo will backstab Cinder because she has alsow a big part of the falt od Tortchwiks death. (remember tortchwick says "it is not what i gain (out of thie) but what i can´t affort to los" that is probably Neo). At last i guess whenever Qrow decide to breake out he can it easily when he turn to a Crow ( hop the put him in a cell with bars to the outside^^), but i guess it need some time for him to calm down and pocess everything.

    In my personal opinion, Ironwood is what really kept this volume together. He's honestly one of my new favorites now, probably in my top 5. Even though I don't necessarily agree with him, I don't disagree with what he's saying either. Same thing with team RWBY. They both have faults in their plans. Which shows that everyone is to blame for what happened. Team RWBY is the biggest part of why Ironwood ended up the way he is since they lied to him since the beginning of the volume. Especially Yang and Blake who didn't tell the truth to Ironwood about Robyn. Which is literally a contradiction to what Yang said in V6. That led to major trust issues, and understandably so. It kind of reminds me of the whole capitalism vs socialism debate to an extent. In my opinion, capitalism is the way to go in society and I view socialism as a utopia that will never truly work out. Even though it sounds great when someone talks about it, it never works. It's an impossible dream to obtain in our reality. When they show comparisons in shows about false realities, it kind of pisses me off because it doesn't represent the true society that I and a lot of others live in.
    Even though it's fiction and they can make the story however they want, having that mentality is more of a false dream that people so desperately want to make within their stories. Sort of like putting a band-aid over a scar that will never heal. The whole capitalism vs socialism discussion was an example and isn't what I'm talking about with RWBY, but it's very similar. Ironwood has more of those selfish desires rather than what's best for the people. If I was in his shoes, then I would probably do the same. I think a lot of others would too. But obviously, they make him seem like the bad guy because of his "false" opinions when in reality they are completely valid.

    I don't think Salem would be able to plow her way through the vault, first cuz then she would have attacked the kingdoms and got the relics a long time ago, secondly because the vault is like a parallel magical dimension or something, as in V5, so I doubt brute forcing the door open would still LEAD there, it'd just show u what's behind the door and not take u there

    Great reaction as always guys!!
    It figures I would first catch this while watching your reaction.
    I caught a couple of funny facial expressions Neo had during the fight.
    When she flipped Nora, Neo gave her a little wink.
    When Ren was about to Kick her, she had this cute little 'oh my' face with her hand near her mouth before wrecking Ren.
    It was really quick. Had to pause and rewind a couple times to confirm what I saw. Watching Neo fight is like Art in motion.
    Also, Neo has been redeemed in my eyes from the travesty of last episode with that incredulous punch.
    This was the Neo performance I have come to expect. She definitely was NOT nerfed here.
    Penny becoming a "real girl". I am all for that. I think that's what happened. Dealing with the death of the maiden as well as getting the power.
    What really nailed it for me was Pietro's smile when he looked at Penny. I think it's more than "I'm glad she made it". I think he senses or sees something different in her.
    Great fight scene between Cinder, Winter and Penny. It felt very grand in scale and size, covering a greater area. Combined with the sound track made it epic.
    Was very surprised to see Watts alive! (Yet he can shoot Oscar.) I did fall into that trap, forgetting the 'No body, No death' rule of thumb for RWBY.
    Not sure why he would be kept around. Except to just escape.
    I kinda figured Ruby's eyes would work (easily) in a clutch when they failed at other times. It was a little irrelevant to me. They could have left it out and I would not have felt anything was missing from the fight. But I guess they needed Ruby to do something in the episode and a solid Silver Eye flash (though the target was missed) was needed before the volume ends.
    Overall, this was probably the best episode in the volume to me. With 7x11 a close second.

    A coupe of things:
    1) As some said below, I believe the aura is tied to maiden powers. Cinder’s aura is red and I believe Autumn’s was as well.
    2) Did Ruby really use silver eyes? I know Cinder ran from her but if she really succeeded at using the eyes, wouldn’t Cinder’s arm have been turned to stone? Also, looking at her eyes, they don’t look silver anymore. They look more lavender
    3) Oscar/Oz was great and I can’t wait to see how things come about with them in Volume 8.
    4)I’m with Jordie that I loved Ironwood at the beginning but now, I’m disappointed.
    5) Neo is fun to watch but yeah, she didn’t really have difficulty taking them on. I loved how she got the drop of them though. She definitely messed up Ren with just a look. He’s become their weakest link in the group and it’s gonna be bad for him next Volume.

    • @bskec2177
      @bskec2177 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1) Aura is an extension of the soul, and Maiden powers attach to a persons soul, so there is some connection there, but Maiden powers are magic, and don't draw power from a soul, unlike a semblance.
      2) Ruby used her eyes, Cinder bailed too fast for it to take effect. The eyes looked silver on my screen, but I've had issues with eye colour before.
      3) Agreed. However, I am expecting Ozpin to fade away, even as Oscar becomes more and more like him.
      4) I expected Ironwood to break earlier. He's gonna die next Volume, they needed to show his descent into madness to make it more acceptable.
      5) Glad they didn't nurf Neo. I was pissed at the Oscar punch last episode - the 100 yard punch that still caught her off guard. JNOR still put up a fight, but the end result wasn't in doubt. The problem Ren has in that situation, is his semblance is only effective in Grimm fights. Also the Neo/Nora thing was way below the belt.

    • @arikwolf3777
      @arikwolf3777 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) Makes sense, I need to re-watch Raven vs Cinder maiden fight to see what color Raven's aura is. I think hers is red too.
      2) Ruby's eyes are still silver, they where reflecting the blue of the surrounding ice. The lighting of scenes has improved greatly.
      3) Me too!
      4) I distrusted Ironwood in vol 2, liked him in vol 3, now I know I was right the first time, dammit.
      5) As Cinder said in the Vital tournament: It doesn't matter if you know how a fight ends, it still fun to watch.

    • @DocMicrowave
      @DocMicrowave 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1- I think it is tied to aura. I was stated back in 3x6 I believe when Ironwood was explaining how the transfer of the Maiden powers will work in the machine.
      2 - Yes, Ruby did use Silver Eyes. As inconsistent as it has been, I knew unfortunately it would work in a clutch. And apparently Cinder was able to (move at the speed of light??) dodge the flash and escape with no apparent harm. I think Winter did more damage than those 'Silver Eyes'.
      3 - I agree, Oscar/Oz had a pretty good performance.
      4 - I respect Ironwood. Yes he is making all the wrong decisions now and appears to be going crazy. But he had a very ruff road with all the betrayals, deceptions and subversion. His heart (what little is left) was in the right place.
      5 - NEO (Best Girl) is always a treat to watch. Especially when she is fighting. Like poetry in motion. I am so happy they retconned that retoconn they did on her last episode with that oh so silly punch from Oscar. I can't speak for anyone else but this episode showcased the Neo I have come to respect. Outclassing 3 Junior Huntsmen and a farm boy with identity issues? I have no problem with that.
