One of the most amusing things whenever someone new reacts to the wire is seeing how much people come into it thinking in "tv show logic" and how it makes people go wild in some assumptions. It's part of the fun, really, because this show *will* run circles around your brain and subvert your expectations where you least expect to be subverted. It does this by at its core being a show about *people* who can at times be at their most interesting when things are fairly low stakes in the grand scheme of things. But it's also very much a show about the world in which these people live, and about its institutions. One thing I'll suggest, always look for paralels, because the show loves to establish them. Back in the first episode, for example, the scene where McNulty gets a lashing from his captain is followed by a scene where Dee gets a lashing from Stringer and is demoted to the pit. Kima tries to school the two hot headed idiot cops she's working with, Dee schools the kids in the pit.
When DeAngelo was talking about the guy who invented McNuggets, he might as well have been talking about the drug trade. The little guys at the bottom do the work and take the risks, and the guys at the top get rich from it.
Love how quickly you pick up on so much in the show. I'm from the town this is about and it always feels good when someone can relate to the people here who, for better or worse, were very much like this back then and kinda still are. I'm really looking forward to your future episodes; You seem a perfect match for the show.
Forgot how good this series was. I remembered it taking a couple of episodes to warm up, but watching it this time round, feel like it's easy to get sucked in from the first episode. I guess it was a pioneer in it's time, we weren't used to television that would build story so purposefully yet patiently - the majority of television then just felt so disposable, and this along with a couple others really raised the bar.
It's so funny seeing people watch the wire. Some of your predictions are right on the nose. You pointed out something that we won't actually see the result of for a very long time but what you sad was very accurate and a pivotal point in one storyline
This show is trying to be more realistic I'd say, McNulty doesn't really have to fear being targeted by Barksdales people. In real life there is never any benefit, especially not for organized criminals, to raise their gun to law enforcement, that would always cause more problems, than it could possibly solve. McNulty should be more afraid of his bosses I suppose :)
Glad to find another reactor who dives into The Wire! This is a fantastic show and you won't regret it one instant. However, be sure to give this show your entire, undivided attention when you're watching. Unlike most shows nowadays, it won't spoon-feed you anything, there will be things you'll need to piece out by yourself from what is shown on the screen. Also, notice that whenever some music is playing, it's always coming from the scene itself - someone is watching tv, or listen to a car radio, a cd player.. There's never any background music track. And, I'm sure you'll notice soon enough, this isn't your typical cop show where there's the hot pursuit with the bad guy who goes down in a hail of bullet to end the episode. This is a very slow burn, but absolutely worth the journey. Each season will bring in a new aspect of the Baltimore life, though the drug trade will always be at the center of the events. (Edit) I had written this above before starting this episode, but I really appreciated how you immediately picked up they were bs'ing DeAngelo in the interrogation room. Most reactors miss the dialogue in the beginning of the episode where they say Gant has no wife, no kids, but as soon as Bunk said he had 3 kids, you knew he was lying, so kudos to you! You'll love this show!
Casualty section is where officers on extended leave are assigned, e.g. if you get a serious long term illness or injury. What I can't figure out is if Prez worked in casualty i.e., doing paperwork for the cops actually on leave or if he was placed on leave. I'm guessing he did paperwork since he was cleared to have a badge and gun.
I love your attention to detail. You also have compassion and understanding, I can tell you will not only enjoy this show but you will also be able to see the bigger picture. Great reaction 👍🏾
First off, cracking reaction once again. You're picking up plenty going on and reading between the lines and this show isn't short on the details. Secondly, I'm sure it's probably a small thing to you but I'm LOVING that you show your pause in the scenes from time to time. This show's writing is legitimately on another level so when there are reactors that talk all over it, around it and through it all the while they miss key plot points or dialogue and it can be a stumbling block for later on. Eurgh what I wouldn't give to watch this for the first time again. Loving your stuff!
I subscribed to watch you’re reactions to this series, which so far are very insightful. You might be made for this show which imho is still the best written tv series, and if not, at least among the top tier.
Same here. I've tried watching some Wire reactions on YT because it's obviously one of my favorite shows of all time, but it's frustrating because those reactors don't really respond with depth & intelligence, or they edit it too much, cutting the best stuff. But this girl Jan has it down: smart, observant, noticing themes & patterns, and the edits really keep the integrity of the episodes. She's my go-to for Wire reactions now!!
Your intelligence already puts you above about 90% of reactors, and you've got the personality too. Stick to it, you'll go far. I always felt for D'Angelo Barksdale. He's a fundamentally good kid who just had the misfortune of being born in the wrong place, and to the wrong family.
Hey Janet. Thanks for your reaction. But if you stick with The Wire, you will see that this is not your normal detective show. It is never about just one case. It is about the system and how it works. It is one of the best shows ever.
The best to do after this episode is seen, is Next time just let the story be told first like 2 more episodes then give narrative. Your good, but need patience.
You’re missing the story flow, it’s a reason why it’s the greatest most underrated show ever on television. Please for now on comment after the scene. Your jumping out in front of the story and and incorrect About what’s going on. You have five more seasons don’t think ok it’s some street s@@t it easy to figure You’re to miss this show is much more than that. Love your voice, the trick is talk less, speak only when needing clarification. Keep going!!!
I always get jealous of people watching the Wire for the first time, knowing that I'm never going to get the feeling of being on that journey again.
RIP to Lance Reddick (Lt. Daniels). He was such a great actor.

Best reaction I've ever seen and I've seen a lot! I'm definitely going to watch every episode

So glad you're taking this journey. It starts off so strong and it only gets better!

You're getting a lot of the more subtle plot lines and frictions in this show. Very cool. Looking forward to the rest of your reaction!
