Every single one of the surviving veterans say that they hated Sobel but we're VERY grateful for the harshness of his training!! They say it helped them become the best soldiers and probably helped them to survive!!!
I don't think that was Sobel's intention but it wound up being an unintentional BENEFIT to the men!!

  • @bernardsalvatore1929

Well young lady you have earned a sub from me because I love to watch the younger generations react to this show!!
Just want to relay some information, actually the commanding officer of EASY company was a Captain not a Sergeant!! Don't mean to sound nitpicky but just wanted to correct you on that!! Yes these men all volunteered for this because they wanted to be with the best of the best!! And the airborne troops were the best of the best, trained better and longer than any of the other military troops at that time!!
One thing you will learn throughout this series is the reason why they are called the GREATEST GENERATION!!!
These men basically dropped their lives to join the military and fight the evil that was Nazi Germany!!
There's another series called the Pacific which focuses on our Pacific theater of war against the Japanese!!!
This is something that I think everyone should watch and show their children!!!❤

Same here and well said! I'm always amazed at how much history is lost on our younger generation (I grew up as a kid in the 70's) and was always reading everything.
I understand and am not criticizing and only that schools have changed so much along with technology taking people away from history, unfortunately for social media and stunts.

This is the masterpiece of masterpieces about the war. It is based on a book so it is all based on real people and actual events. In a nutshell, the plan was to drop close to 20,000 paratroopers and glider infantry behind the invasion beaches the night before the landings to take specific objectives and block German reinforcements to the beaches. The seaborne invasion was to take place around dawn the next day with around 150,000 men.

This came out in 2001, Friends didnt end until 2004.. David Schwimmer was ROSS. It was amazing to me to see him walk out in the first scene as Ross and turn into Captain Sobel within minutes. He absolutely owned this role. Sobel absolutely wanted them to be the best, but I feel it was much more because of his own glory than it was because of preparing the men. The men did benefit from that harsh training though.

@12:30 Sobel is tough but that doesn't make him a good trainer. A good officer (or any leader) also knows when to give praise and how to instill pride, particularly pride in your unit. All Sobel does is tell his soldiers they are failing. He's a morale destroyer. A leader ensures accountability and drives people, but he/she doesn't just denigrate everyone all the time. These are traits of anti-leaders. The military doesn't encourage this at all.

    • @ScarriorIII
      @ScarriorIII 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

His behavior is known training technique, which is to unify the team by making himself the bad guy. This is literally drill sergeant 101. However, the problem is that he is not just their training officer but also their leader. Add to that his insecurities (which is why he tried to punish winters and promotes him in private etc) and you can see why he didn't work out. Again, excellent training officer, bad leader.

Yep, they really would have shot them! It's like Col. Sink said, it's an act of mutiny, which is punishable by death. When in peacetime, the punishment is not that severe. In peacetime, the charge would have been more like "Dereliction of Duty." Which would likely only result in a period of time in a military jail. However, in wartime, you can't have a whole group of soldiers just quitting. Imagine, if your company was in a battle, and things started really getting tough, and all the men just decided upon themselves, to just quit and walk away from the battle. That is a VERY serious offense! The "cure" for mutiny was death, to prevent anyone from trying to attempt it.

As a younger person, it is important to remember that these men volunteered to fight and in many cases lost their lives, so that future generations could live free. Much of that attitude is lost in today's world of instant gratification and non-willingness to sacrifice. We are slowly losing the shared experience of military service as only about 0.5% of Americans join the military, yet the 99.5% that do not join have all of their rights and freedoms because of them.

So this mini series is based on a book about the 506h parachute infantry regiment of the 101St Airborne division. You'll be following them thought the whole series. So the 101st Airborne division (10k-15k men) would be broken down something like this: 3-4 Brigades (3k-5k men). The Brigades were broken down into 4 Regiments of which the 506th is one. The 506th Regiment consisted on 9 Companies A-I of which E (Easy) is the one we're following and would consist of 140 men. The company would be broken down in smaller units of Platoons and Squads. You'll hear them talk about Platoons (around 46 men) in the show but don't recall them mentioning Squads. So anyway you know have an idea of how many men they are talking about when you hear the different terms.

If you're going all the way with this...be prepared to grow, laugh, learn and suffer with these characters. The first episode is in some ways my favorite, if only for the innocence and the fact that I know what lies ahead for these men. This was when their biggest threats were "Army noodles with ketchup." I love the power move Winters makes by literally grabbing the pen out of Sobel's hand while he was abusing his power...it's brilliant. The old man on the bike still of my favorite scenes "Deary me..." Hard to call this a TV show honestly, it's a 12 hour Saving Private Ryan CURRAHEE! ♠

28:53 back then, if you wanted to, you could have a family member ship over a personal sidearm for you to use in the field. Whether or not you could use it was largely up to the company commander, but most officers probably wouldn’t care.
The same is also true the other way around. If you captured an enemy pistol or even a rifle, you could have it shipped back home to the states to keep. I personally own a Japanese Type 99 Arisaka that has indicators of it being a vet-bringback. This is how a lot of German and Japanese WWII small arms got onto the American collector’s market. Even things like subguns and fully automatic belt fed machine guns entered the country as well.

Watching your reaction is a little annoying because you're talking relentlessly which instantly tells me that you are talking and not paying attention. Your generation has the unique inability to be a passive observer that way you actually learn and don't keep running your mouth. You say you don't know your history and yet you keep talking. Stop talking and pay attention and use those ears, the brain needs to absorb information young lady, especially your brain.

I know this is just Ep 1 and your fever just broke, but PLEASE try to limit the commentary. I can't catch any of the dialogue if you talk the entire time. That makes the chances of watching all 10 episodes less likely.

It doesn’t matter if you can’t hear the dialogue. The important thing is that she is talking over it so she can’t hear it. She will miss so much this way.

I bailed. The editing made it impossible to follow, and I've watched 18 other Band of Bros. reactions but the stuttering edit where you omit key scene words made it unwatchable. Honor this work.

This seems harsh. I thought this was fine. Not sure why the hostility.

If you learn from this series what happened in WW2, then consider what is currently happening in Ukraine, you will see that things are not very different in today's world.
