Just a little fact, chivalry is pronounced ˈSHivəlrē, the ch sounds like sh, like in sheet or shoes.
This sounds interesting. A Korean girl sent me a message on Facebook chat, then asked me to go to google chat. We chatted for a week and a half then there’s some chemistry going on then started saying she loves me, at first I asked her that if she ever needs a person to chat with or to be a pin pal then hit me up then we can chat. Think she likes me for the photo appearance on Facebook, well the picture on my Facebook was professionally shot and if you compare my professionally shot photo and cellphone picture, they’re far apart and different, so she tells me she likes me on the photo. She checks out all of the box’s of a Korean girl about chat app and all those stuff. But is she moving too fast to call me HONEY and says I love you in just a week and a half. I know maybe why she’s doing this because she doesn’t wanted to lose me too fast because she feels the chemistry between us. She lives in Texas but enlisted in the army and I live California, she already put in her notice to be discharged from the military so she can come be with me, I’m like it’s too fast saying to myself. I’m Asian but not Korean and I might not understand the mindset of a Korean girl. She writes that she’s been hoping for a nice guy and somewhat i checkout all of the boxes that she’s looking for. Think why she’s in the military too, both parents are gone and she’s the only child, now she’s met me and I’m single then she knows that she has to get what she wants before it’s gone, she did tell me that she sad and has NO one. Should I just give it a shot or just tell her to slow down just a little. I means she looks awesome and everything but one week and a half feels too rush to say I love you and calling me Honey already. Need help from a Korean perspective from a non-Korean Asian please
I had a date with a Korean guy. I thought he was really sweet at first, then later on in the day he started saying things about my mannerisms and appearance that "could be better." Yo I've never ended the date faster than that! Politely excused myself and told him later that he wasn't my type.

I just dont understand the knuckleheads that actually book a plane ticket to Korea and start wondering around Seoul like a fool hoping to run into a Park Go Gum or a Ji Chan Wook! Honey, these men will probably marry in their late 40s or 50s due to their careers. You are better off settling for the simple homey looking korean man living in the countryside.
I live in Korea currently, and I dated a Korean guy for 2 years. We were good friends for 8 of those months, but after that I realized I just liked him. We were really compatible and had a peaceful relationship and felt like we didn't have to "put on a show" with each other. We both don't have weird fetishes for each other's ethnicity or anything. We were just two random people who met by chance and connected. He took great care of me when I needed things, and he was very ambitious and inspired me to grow and improve myself. He also would randomly tell me about him dreaming of us living together and having kids together. We're not that young btw, we're both 28.
So safe to say I was in love with him, and I asked the "Do you see a future with us?" Question. He was hesitant, but said yes, but was worried about what his parents will think. And he said he needed time to think about it before he talked to his parents.
Everything went downhill from there. Suddenly he considered us "long distance" because we lived in different cities and suddenly he had issues with the "language barrier." And he said he could not see a future with us shortly after.
I heard Korean guys don't take foreign girls seriously, and just like to have fun with them. He had met many of my friends and they said he did really care about me. But I'm just having a hard time believing it. Cause I felt like he threw me away once I showed desire for something for real. Buuuuutttt lesson learned. Time to move on.

@@quiteperqui3529 Seems like you're a bit out of touch with reality. Most cultures are like the korean ones when it comes to dating and marriage. Parents, unfortunetly, as alot of influence in people's relationships. Many of them gets disowned by family for that dating someone that they don't like. Many fear that so have heart and empathy towards the guy if that's the case.

When I was travelling in Korea this past spring, I was taking the subway back home after a tour for the first time ever, like I had never used the subway before that. And this guy saw me, said I like your tattoos, and I was like oh thanks and figured that would be the end of the conversation. But then we just kept talking for the whole way back to Hongdae, he stopped me from missing my stop, helped me find the right exit and everything, and then we traded kakaos and hung out while I was there.
Similar things happened throughout my time there, dudes would just strike up conversations or sometimes immediATEly ask for my Kakao and I would be like sir-
Anyways, it happened a lot more than I thought it would. So guys 100% will just start talking to foreigners if they can speak English or want to practice English.

It happens all the time in Hongdae. They only want to sleep with you. They wouldn't approach strange korean women on the street, but they do it with us because they think we are easy and we would open our legs to any korean guy
I have no real interest in dating let alone dating in Korea but I always find it interesting to learn about dating culture around the world. It’s so interesting how somethings can be so similar yet so different at the same time, as far as expecting men to pay on the first date I’m honestly not against the idea, it is some thing i’ve become accustomed to BUT I don’t always expect it and I’m more than happy to pay for myself or pay for each other.

i understand the cultural meaning and purpose of "oppa" in korean but at the same time, it's a little weird for me because my mom's family is very bavarian (a german ethnicity), and the word for grandfather is "opa" and it's pronounced almost the same way as the korean "oppa".
hearing and sayingthe korean oppa always makes me think of the geman opa. specifically my opa who was very old and bald. and it makes it feel weird for me to call anyone under the age of 65 an opa/oppa.
i'd rather just say Seonbae or hyung instead of oppa.

Thank you for making videos like this showing the real side of dating 🤗 . I’ve been dating since I was 15 and in my experience most men are not that different when it comes to their overall character (obviously cultures and races have different varying internalized behaviours that may separate them from eachother) but most of them are pretty misogynistic and definitely do things to uphold the patriarchal society whether internationally or not. Not to be a negative Nancy but most of them really aren’t much to right home about.
For context : I’m a black woman, live in Canada currently but I’ve lived in a few different countries and had experiences with African men , black men in the west, Asian men, Latin men and white men

This is so funny, because I have dated all over the globe as well, watched other couples and have heard from friends in relationships, and I agree, men are not that different. But I would say, there are always the same 5 or so kind of guys, the players, the fuckbois, the serial monogamists, the good eggs and the quiet, shy kind. That means the spread of men who want relationships and are ready to fall in love is about the same, as are the shitty men who lie, play your emotions or are just emotionally stunted.
It does help to know some cultural differences, so you don't feel like someone is a creep, if that is just does what he thinks is expected.
Yeah shitty guys everywhere around the globe, but do not despair, a few of them are good. If you can't find one, it's okay, just be alone. no company is better than bad company.

I think and believe that regardless of Nationality people shouldn't be oozing or expecting something out of a specific group/country because reality is different. And honestly, Nationality does not matter: there will be good and bad ones... what matters is you find someone kind and whom you can find common ground with in terms of maturity, morals, ethics, interests, etc. Love alone is not enough. Be different enough to complement each other but also understand differences, but not so much that it is a cause for lack of harmony.

Fun fact: ‘Oppa’ sounds like ‘Opa’ in my language (dutch). Which means grandfather. I personally would never use this word in the context some Koreans do. It doesn't sound right to me 😅

One of my coworkers speaks a little Korean because she taught English for several years in Korea, but even after living there she doesn't feel fluent. It seems like a very difficult language. The alphabet is pretty logical and easy to learn at least. Learning languages is good for your brain, and delays or prevents dementia. You don't need a better reason than your health. We sometimes have customers who are Korean. Not as many as Spanish speaking customers but still quite a few. My SIL studies Swedish for her job, and she and my brother got to visit Sweden a few years ago. I had a Norwegian pen pal in high school but I never got around to learning Norwegian. It's supposed to be the easiest language for English speakers to learn. And I like Norwegian dramas, so I might try to learn some Norwegian at some point. I also like Chinese dramas snd I wish I could learn Mandarin too. I need to win the lottery and retire so I can just study languages all day.

I didn't realize calling a slightly older guy oppa was such a big deal in Korea when I asked my platonic Korean male friend if I could call him oppa. I thought 'oppa' had a more 'older brother' like meaning so I thought it was okay to use it when addressing guys who were older than me but not old enough to be called 'samchon' or 'ajusshi'. Didn't know oppa took on a whole different meaning in Korean culture whoops 😳. Also I'm Vietnamese and it's pretty normal to call guys slightly older than you 'older brother', even to strangers (In Vietnamese, that term is 'anh'). Didn't know that didn't apply to Korean culture 😓
It’s sad it evolved to that point. Pretty much every Asian language has a word like what oppa originally meant. It’s just the meaning got twisted and warped so much due to popular media that the connotation has changed so drastically
And it really depends in the person. I have one male Korran friend who I have known for years, but I would never call him 오빠! Obviously it depends on the person, because I also know a different male Korean friend who is comfortable with with that term of address. So it's best to ask the person themselves.

It is totally acceptable but it is much harder I would say. Old people (not all) often have difficulty adjusting at their age let alone a completely different culture/ language. That's why 1st gen immigrants often have smaller social circle/ connection compared to 2nd or 3rd gen

I think another big reason why people from the US don’t text all day is because of their job. We either don’t have time to text or, more likely, are not allowed to use personal phones during work hours.
Learned a lot from this! My cousin used to date a korean man before. He was cute and all but very patronizing. So, before worse comes to worst my cousin broke up with him.
Ahahahah I'm terribly scared of men bc of some trauma, so I might not be dating in a good while if ever, but im still gonna watch this bc I'm looking into language classes in korea and saving up money for that. I think it's different fact checking as a korean than actually having a fact check from a foreigners perspective if that makes sense, because dating a korean as a korean, Is different than dating a korean as a foreigner
Hello I am a western European girl and first time i went to Korea in 2021 for tourism 10 days i have met a korean boy, for chance in a Karaoke Noreaebang, we talked a lot and he has asked me a date like friends, we had first date after 3 days and he tooks me in a Cafè in day in Gangnam and then he asked me second date and i went to that and during second date he told me he liked me a lot and liked my mind also. He never tried to kiss me or sleep with me, and i find out he was a really really good person, he is an engineer and for passion sings and dance hiphop and breakdance. Then happened that i had to leave and back in my country Rome Italy, and he came at the airport and asked me to be his forever one. I thought was a joke in the beginning because i heard stories about korean men that plays with European girls because think we're easy, but as long as we talked and say goodbye for my way back home i understood he really had a real interest on me. So i said we start to be friends first and know each other, so for 4 months we were that good friends and one day he asked me my 4 finger measure, so i gave him and after 1 month he buyed for us couple rings, after six months dating he bought me Diamonds necklace and ring and asked me to marry. Well in April 2021 we got married and he is the best man i have ever met in my life, his mom loves me so much and his dad also and his brother and nephews and to make his mom proud of me because i am orphan remained of family, i am in a Korean School in Italy to study korean language and when will be finished after 9 months i will go to Yonsei University in Seoul to follow my goal in Korean language. At least i changed my opinion about korean men, I think not all the men are the same, as well as in Europe then in Korea: men are different anywhere there is the good one and the bad one like happened to a friend of mine to be used by her Korean boyfriend that played her. Most depends by situation and destiny! I wish to all to find the real love of their life and be happy not even if the boy is Korean, Chinese, Arab, Polland, or another country, what is more important is love and respect for each other and for family of each other, and to know both culture is important also because will help you to live a great relationship from now to the future and respecting each other mind. I feel like "oppa" is the equivalent of "papi" in Spanish. "Papi" (English for daddy) is an informal / sweet and / or common way of addressing your dad but in some Spanish-speaking countries it can also be used with your male significant other. The problem is, some men fetishize it and it's quite cringey. But then again, in other cases is sweet like when my mom calls my dad 🤣

@@low_etc I'm not the spokesperson for introverts or anything, but as an introvert I couldn't handle someone bugging me that often in the day. I definitely prefer texting to calls, but interaction is still interaction and it's still draining (even if it's less draining than calls/in person chatting). I'd break up with that person before lunch if they try to text all day like that.

I might be moving there soon and am worried bc the guys in the UK are pretty respectful and I’ve heard that Korean guys can get aggressive and creepy when they’re in the club. KoreaChan on TH-cam did a video about how to avoid the bad guys in Korea and where to go to meet someone nicer -- he said the upscale bars where foreigners tend to gather are better. He also said there would be some guy going around chatting up the girls, and there would be some shy guys with him, I guess he would be their wingman. He said the shy guys should be the ones you should be interested in.

As a woman in the United States it's pretty common to be approached by men (and some woman) generally it's more common mostly because it's normal to strike up small talk with strangers.
@kelseythekorean I may have to go work in South Korea next year, I am 43 single mom. They say that because I'm not only a foreigner and a single mom Korean men will never ever date me. Plus I'm latina and I don't know why they think latinas are easy and this is so not true.

Communication is key yes, but it entails more than just casual questions, but ultimately both party need to enjoy the conversation and know that you can have boundaries too. Not every single day you're in the mood to text or converse with your love one, at least not every 2 hrs 😅 but sometimes you do and that's fine 😉.

I'm Brazilian and here every day we have terrible news about all types of riding, no age limit... I intend to go to study in Korea next year and I want to know if I will really feel safe because I don't feel safe in Brazil ! In my opinion, Kdrama shows reality. At least, it has never sheltered me. Kpop kinda does too. Let's just say Kpop does a good job delivering societal issues in their song messages. You also look at the kpop celebrities, how they have to strive hard for perfection (how extremely important outside perfection and performance is), how crazy hard they have to work, how limited their freedom is, and how strict they have to live and lead their lives. The point is, neither kdrama nor the kpop culture ever made me feel like I was presented an alternative world of fantastical make belief. They actually turned me to be even more a realistic person. I watch kdrama, I listen to the reality experience of the negative side to what it's like to live or date in Korea, and I receive no shock or surprise. When people say reality is nothing like kdrama, I'm always confused like...wdym? To me, kdrama does a good job showcasing bullying, hierarchy, discrimination, classism, not to mention bossy male leads that act arrogant toward women.... I thank kdrama in fact for not sheltering viewers from reality but presenting it as it is.

I think when people refer to Kdrama, they just talk about the romance ones. However, I’ve watched so many others that aren’t revolving around romance. The romance ones do tend to romanticize. However, when I watched Save Me, Law School, Juvenile Justice, The Uncanny Encounter, I learned how bullying is such a huge problem out there. I also learned that child abuse is very prominent along with domestic violence. Save Me spread light to the cult issue out there and there’s a documentary about it on TH-cam that I watched that reminded me of that show. I get amazed at how bullies tend to get away with that they do especially if they have a family member in power.
But your speaking facts! Idk why people think that all Korean shows don’t touch on the issues in their country. That’s one of the reasons why I love watching it so much because they are not afraid to critique their own society! People just need to expand their genres if they’re going to watch kdramas 😊

I do have to say that maybe not all Kshows, but some really show reality and made me think of boeing a better person. Like for ex. I’m learning korean cause i truly love the language and think it’s so beautiful and complex and the history of it’s origin by king sejong is so romantic. If i ever get the chance to date a korean women, that would be a cool experience. I'm a mixed girl from Russia who has dated quite a few korean people (not just men) because I grew up with a large Korean community of friends. I never understood why people would date someone just because they are a certain ethnicity or nationality. I hated when people would say they wanted to date me just because I was mixed. It gives me the ick. But anyways, my general consensus is that Korean people are lovely however sometimes they move really fast and that makes me uncomfortable. I don't want them to love me in a few days. That was the problem with a few of my relationships. They were good people and I have no problems with dating a Korean person again. Everyone is unique and different. I prefer Korean dating style more than Russian dating style. And Russian men tend to be a lot more traditionally masculine in a bad way.

You really should only call guys you are close to Oppa, but their name +씨, 님, you can even call someone 선생님 in a non teacher context. But if you're friends, calling them by their name, and saying 너 is not really a big deal.

Just like someone already said, if you don't want to sai Oppa you can use his full name/ surname + 씨 confidently without doubts, some Korean guys they feel bothered if you are younger and you use only their first name to call them even if you add the 씨 together!!! So if you are not confident call him by his surname or full name!!!!

Since you were with a Swede, I would be interested in your opinion on the language barrier. I had no problem with dating in my 18 months in South Korea. English is very common in the academic environment. But in the way of communication I noticed clear differences. I come from Germany and the way of communication is very direct. Similar to the USA or even Sweden. But in South Korea the communication is more indirect and the context (who says what in which situation or she wants to tell me something with saying nothing 😅) is important.
This has sometimes led to confusing, fortunately always funny, situations.

Alot of people think that the US is the epitome of western culture, IT ISN'T. Other English speaking countries look at the US & deem them to be ignorant, loud, dumb & pushy. Not all Americans of course.
Europe & the UK have a rich history & culture, America is considered a baby with a society that is not even 300 hundred years old & no culture of its own. Its cultural identity is stolen from other nationalities. The only true culture the US has, belongs to the Indigenous Americans.
Even NZ culture is older, having been settled by Polynesians between 1200 & 1300 AD.
Native Americans have been in the area that is now the US for far longer than Polynesians have been in New Zealand, though..
