He was writing Vagabond at a weekly pace right? He should've said he needed more time to plot the story, a month or so at best. Given how popular the series was at the time, I'm sure some folks would've agreed.
It needed to, in the course of greatness it is natural to be in pain. Uncertainty is an old friend but he leaves your side soon enough, the story is born.
Most of the art world is awful, not just manga. Sometimes it's better to have a boring job if you can't stand mental and financial pressures of being an artist.
It's incredible how the masters of their art are never satisfied... Also, heartbreaking to see how many mangakas suffer for their Work. Sure, they're doing what they love. But the amount of effort that goes into a manga like Berserk or Vagabond, both in the art and story, is exceptional... They did not need to go that far, I feel! Most panels from these manga could be framed as fine pieces of art, due to the amount of detail, emotion and passion put into them. Yet, as a reader, my desire to appreciate the details struggles against the desire to know what happens next... :)
I feel the same way! I always try to take a minute to wholeheartedly appreciate the art and the passion behind it but the urge to flip the pages to read what's to come is a very hard thing to resist. Such fine art should be framed and not be hidden between pages in a book, that way the efforts put into those chapters would be vastly more appreciate and loved
Let's be honest, the deadlines are the problem, not their absolute dedication to the quality of the thing they do. If we all would work on what we do with this intensity and dedication, but give ourselves the time to do it sustainably, what a beautiful society we would inhabit.
@@philippfischer717 yeah, it's the deadlines... There's an expectation from work culture that even something that normally comes spontaneously (ideas, creativity, inspiration) should "come spontaneously until deadline X". Another side-effect of wanting things to be other than they are.

Such a great author, it's crazy how much dedication he has. He had to feel what Musashi felt to draw the panel with satisfaction, that will take a lot of mental strain and the outcome is so fucking good but it's not the best in his opinion, what an author.
Nobody who's worked this hard while trying to maintain life balance can blame this man for quitting. If a person expects anyone to produce this level of quality forever, they've probably never done anything of quality. He's given us his time, his energy, and his soul. Let the man rest and live his life in peace.
I felt his dissatisfaction with how Musashi came out…sometimes when I draw I become so so obsessed with it being exact and being perfect that it just puts a toll on me and then I remember…I did the best I could….I just have to learn…I have to try harder next time.
This is why I keep quiting and come back to drawing. I grow so dissatisified and end up going through depression. Despite everyone telling me Im really good at drawing, I can never convince myself
Many people just skip some panel but they don't realize how manga artist like inoue and other's spent so much time and effort making on their manga for our entertainment

This Dude is so hardworking its amazing. He tries to feel the emotions his character are feeling in order to make it as real as possible I love his dedication. Plus even though it came out perfect he found it to be not as perfect as he would want it to be.
I think all artists can relate to how he feels. When you're unsatisfied with something, all the praise in the world couldn't satisfy that nagging feeling in the back of your head that it didn't turn out the way you wanted it to. But what's weirder, is every artist is also used to the shock of witnessing a master at work STILL not be satisfied. His final drawing didn't satisfy his desires, but it more than got the job done. For the story, for the artwork itself, for the deadline...I mean, the man absolutely crushed it. That panel is seriously amazing. Artists are often too critical of themselves, and we're our own worst enemies. We all get so frustrated with where we are, that we forget where we came from.
He stopped to go coach a middle school basketball team, which was one of his dreams since high school. Then he came back to write and direct the Slam Dunk film.
