  • Owls aren't easy creatures to view, since they hide during daylight and fly by darkness. However, calling is a way to overcome their normal habits and put them in front of your binoculars or camera. Learn how in this video.

I talk to Mr. Owl, a Great Horned Owl, almost every night from my back porch. And he loves to talk back! He even flies in and sits in a tree not far from my porch. Sometimes we will attract a few more from around the lake to fly in and we're all hooting back and forth, it's great, even though I rarely get a glimpse of him during the day

There’s a Barred Owl over at my camp by a lake, I call him “Hooty” because of how vocal he is, he has a distinct voice so I can tell it’s him, he’s become so used to us, he almost seems like a pet. I’ve known him for almost 4 years, April 2016.

I agree that it's a lot of fun to lure owls in for photography and to just be able to see one. But please be responsible. Its more rewarding to walk up on a owl in the woods. I have found on camping trips and visits to the north woods that you can lure them in by just playing their calls at dusk. And then just going about your evening as if you weren't waiting for anything. And then sometime in the middle of the night I'm woken up by Owls. Most of the time I hear them calling back and forth to each other. I've seen 3 barred owls in my life time and all 3 of them I walked up on in the woods during the day. The key is to be quite! No Phone No Conversation just you and the sound of your footsteps. And then be totally alert with your surroundings. I've heard several owls walking through the woods calling back and forth to each other. That's the most amazing experience. I love seeing and hunting for them. But I feel the most blessed when they invite me into their world and they go about their lives as if I'm not there.

Guys this is an amazing "hack" to get great pictures, but use it responsably, were i live u need a permition to actually do it legally (usually during scientific investigations), this is because it stresses the wild animals around and expecially the owls, wasting their precious time and energy if they respond, and even if they are "doing nothing" during the day it is crucial that they have their rest and take care of their feathers. And believe me it is way more rewarding to find them naturally.
    Good luck out there!

This was very informative 😉. I’ve never seen or heard a barred owl behind my house but I do have a pair of Great Horned Owls 🦉 that I do see and hear rather often (I assume they have a nest close to my house it’s spring, this is the 3rd year I’ve heard them if it’s the same pair which I’m assuming it is). And I won’t try calling them in until later on in winter cuz I’d love a day time or dusk pic of them 😊.
I also hear but I’ve never seen a pair of Eastern Screech Owls 🦉, everyone says they sound ‘scary’ but I think they are actually very beautiful sounding and soothing ☺️!
I enjoyed ur video very much thank you 😊

Hi Mike .. I have 3 young owls living in the old trees next to my house. I managed to call them the past 3 nights by mimicking their sound ..I couldn't believe they came to see me nearer and nearer and look rigjt at me. They fluffed themselves up and sitting moving their heads and bobbing about. Tonight though the log burner was on from ealier this evening, and one of them landed on top of the flue for 3 seconds ! The fire was low, but I've been so worried that it got burnt .. what do you think? I'm sure it's call is sharper sounding it's hard to tell. I hope it will be ok I feel awful. The mother is still feeding them. I only go out once about back of 10 for bout half hr or so they are quite lively calling to each other ..

Less than one year and I managed it without calling non-stop with big ass speakers to draw owls for my own selfish enjoyment. Owls dont have the luxury to spend 30 mins searching for a non existing mate. I'm sure you're also doing this in spring while they feed their youngs and use a lot more energy. Once you know where the owls are, they'll come back to their favorite tree or perch by themselves and you'll have much more chance to see natural behavior like hunting or other.

I don't have an inherent issue with people using this technique (hoping to do it myself some time), but the way the guy in the video does it does make me cringe a little. For one thing, you're not "supposed to" endlessly play the recording on loop until one shows up, instead you're "supposed to" lure them in slowly with sporadic playbacks, but I put "supposed to" in quotes because I recognize that this is probably something birding ethicists are overly sensitive about.
More concerning is him shining high-power lights directly in their eyes and advocating that as the way to do it. It's probably not as harmful as birding blogs will tell you, but still, I feel he could at least use a red lens or something or shine the light right under the own instead of in its face.
And please tell me those aren't live power lines in the video. I agree that all the "you're putting the birds at risk when you do this" is greatly exaggerated, but I feel like not doing playback near power lines should be a no-brainer.
Still, all that aside, as far as I'm concerned playback is a perfectly valid birding method and I really don't like how people in the birding community will shame you for doing it whether you're a professional photographer or an amateur birder. Probably the only reason FWS haven't banned it yet is because not enough people are doing it for them to give a shit.

I’m disappointed. I’d expected 5+ minutes of owls doing the calling, not human commentary with the drive-you-right-up-the-wall guitar background.

Owls are cool birds. What tape did you use in the video ? Barred owls but who makes the tape and where can I get one ?

I use an old Johnny Stewart Barred Owl Call tape I got years ago. Don't know if it's still available.
