@@gggz420 I think it's her specific bone structure. Her face naturally looks gaunt, so when she smiles it's pretty creepy compared to the last film for example.
Absolutely lost it in the theater when we were shown the peep-hole perspective and you just see the possessed mother waddling after that kid in the hallway just to sling him into a wall like a ragdoll.

I actually got invited by the director Lee Cronin to see the premiere of it here in Ireland, my mum was selling him a house and we got talking after he found out that I’m a film student. Genuinely nice guys, I was sitting with him and his dad for it.
And Charlie you might find this funny, regarding that fusion monster at the end. I asked him what the inspiration for that was and lee cronins response was “I wanted it to be like the most fucked up family hug

The eyeball bit was so intelligently timed too, because Evil Dead 2 had you questioning whether it was trying to be comedic or just insane without intending for laughs, with Ash losing it after rekilling Linda. It wasn't until the cellar is stomped and Henrietta's eyeball is swallowed by a cast member that it's immediately made clear that "Yes, it's on purpose, this is a Horror movie, but we can have some fun here too." It wasn't just a shoutout visually, but thematically.
Evil Dead has some of the best makeup designs out there they are able to make the possessed actually look possessed.
I love the deadites. They keep that Exorcist attitude while still being scary and not overly corny

The eyeball flying across the room and shooting into someone’s mouth is actually a homage to the Three Stooges. It’s the grape flicking scene replayed in a horror setting. First seen in Evil Dead 2.
Immediately thought of Evil Dead 2 when she chokes on the eyeball. Sam Raimi is a huge fan of the three stooges.

My biggest gripe is a lot of the time the characters will just sit there while the demon does whatever it wants.
Especially when the mom was hurt with scissors and they decided to have a conversation 10 ft away from her instead of trying to run

That was an issue. They kept separating from each other in that apartment too and it was annoying. I get that they had to do that, or the movie can't happen. But Abed would have a field day with the characters actions.

The scene where the boy played the records and did that ritual was one of the best parts in a scary movie in so long! It was so spooky and it was filmed ridiculously well.
Yep. So much so that I feel the rest of the movie didn't live up to that scene

I loved this movie, it had great references to the previous movies while not over saturating it with them in an out of place way

I have to agree with you about the sound. The sound in this movie is what really had me terrified the entire time. Like when she’s getting possessed in the elevator & you can hear the demon snarling grunting & laughing behind her. Fucking terrifying & amazing st the same time lol. This is the best horror movie I’ve seen in a long long time
Yeah the composition was so good, what really got me was the music as the mother leaves the bathroom and kinda flits her eyes around
Epic sound design for sure, I think the tape sound design was probably the most captivating and just downright creepy.
The one moment that stands out the most to me across both of the remakes was actually from the first one, from the scene where a girl is carving her face with a broken mirror. The sound of her cutting her own flesh was so brutal, it was more disturbing than actually seeing it… truly terrifying. But rise comes close to being as terrifying many many times
Horror’s having a major renaissance these days, and I’m glad I get to witness it. I’m glad it’s not just Jordan Peele who figured out how to do it right.

Peele dropped the ball hard on the candyman. But there are some interesting horrors cropping up here and there. Peele has 2 for sure. I miss when most movies took real risks. We're not even in the bronze era of horror anymore. We're on the way back up though I think.
I'm glad this movie proves that Evil Dead can survive without Ash. Don't get me wrong, I'll miss him and he's my favorite horror character ever, but I'm glad we can still have good movies even though he's gone

Ash is still around, he is just in the future... All ash needs to do is find a time travel machine to go back into the past.
I liked the ending flip because for an hour straight it was relentless intensity. It gave the character a chance to take the fight to them instead of being the victim for the entire outing.
I agree, the ending is when the tide turned. Plus I realized at that point that there was no way Beth and Kassie wouldn't survive, so making it scarier wouldn't have worked for me 😂
That’s usually how Evil Dead ends! Every movie in the franchise, there’s always one person standing, Ash, Mia and now Beth.
Relentless insanity? The demon went from a terrifying force with half a dozen bodies at its disposal to one single lumbering mess that was slower, less alert and less dangerous than if they had come as separate messed up bodies. If anything it felt like a comedown
@@DrGandW read my comment again, relentless intensity for an hour and the then the flip at the end of the movie gave the viewers a break. So yes the slower encumbered monstrosity at the end of the film was a nice change of pace.
This movie absolutely killed it, made me laugh way more often than I thought it would, but it was also actually scary. Felt a lot like an Evil Dead movie for sure
That eyeball was hilarious and also EVERYTHING that happened through the peephole was pure gold!
I was really interested in seeing this movie when I saw the ads for it, im glad to know you actually enjoyed it for a modern horror film. it’s rare to see one be decent, let alone actually great.
There are PLENTY of amazing modern horrors. They just might not all be huge Marvel level blockbusters. If you like horror movies you have a lot to discover!

That eye ball scene was a great call back from the evil dead original.
Which was a callback to The Three Stooges.
Evil Dead walks such a fine line of comedy/self-awareness and downright scary moments. It was a great film
Fun fact: at 3:30 when Charlie talks about the eyeball, that's actually a call back to the original evil dead 2 movie, which was inspired by a 3 stooges gag where one of the stooges shoots a marble down some ones throat
Another fun fact, the noise that was made when she ate the eyeball was Bruce Campbell furiously eating an apple
Bruce Campbell can be heard on the record being played back "they don't call it the Book of the Dead for no reason!" (I'm paraphrasing) but that was Brucey
My god, this movie had me rolling. The dark humor and punctuation of tension with jokes was so well done
That peephole perspective was super intense when you see the Mom looking anxiously through the door almost in a mocking way because the demon can basically see everything that's happening
This makes me so happy to hear cuz I've been so excited for it! Ten years after the last film and a few after the show, Evil Dead continues to rise above all other horror franchises

Wow, I can’t believe it’s been 10 years… evil dead 2013 was so freaking good, rise is really good too, but 2013 was so epic and terrifying. I’m so happy to see them both be so excellent
I really loved the references... the elevator like in The Shining, the laughing demons like in Evil Dead 2, the intro being a callback of sorts to Fede Alvarez' requel

as a huge evil dead fan this was exactly what i wnated, it followed the evil dead structure while doing something new, and those tropes that charlie talks about are stuff the evil dead created, it was awesome
This Movie was so Good and Terrifying at the same time. It had great jumpscares, references to previous movies, Crazy and Terrifying scenes that had my Jaw dropped.

I don’t see many people talking about how great the setting is. It adds to the already very high tension with how small everything is with it being really only a hallway and one small apartment.
There is never a bad Evil Dead film and no one can’t change my mind about that.
I have yet to see a bad Evil Dead
2013 is the weakeast one imo but it's better than most modern horror movies so yeah it is actually good.

Just got done watching it about an hour ago, and i do admit that the sounds were fucking great in this. Felt like the whole god damn theater was shaking when the mom started screaming in the bathroom, especially when the recording started summoning the deadits. Sound was 10/10 in this movie.
The thing about Evil Dead and the “tropes” are that it kinda is the origin of modern horror tropes.
My only reliable source of movie reviews. Another excellent installment to the collection.

Feels like there was a decade where 90% of horror movies coming out were trash but the last few years has had a pretty good balance of trash and actual well-made and thought out films. I think we've finally deviated into the good timeline
My classmates and I were planning to watch this. It's not out in our theatres yet but now I'm even more excited to see it!

We watch all the other evil dead movies the day before. It was a 6 hour marathon. But after watching that you can find all the little refrences and homages to the older films. It was honestly a ton of fun!

Evil dead 2013 is hot dog shit
I liked the movie a lot but I do wish it had more surreal elements like in Evil Dead 2. Didn’t need to be as campy but I would have been interested in seeing some more of the madness. I also felt the motherhood theme was more of an afterthought. One of the more memorable horror movie theater experiences in recent memory.

I just got in from seeing the movie there. It was brilliant. I watched it with a huge grin on my face throughout because it was funny, but it was satisfying. Everything in it, I thought "this is what should happen in an Evil Dead movie". First Hellraiser, and now Evil Dead. Great horror movies in the last 6 months - I hope it's a new trend.
Even if Sam Raimi doesn’t direct the evil dead movies anymore you can still feel his influence in the movies 🔥

it's good to remember that the original Evil Dead created a lot of the tropes present in this one. Also the main demon turning into a big monster thing is pretty standard for Evil Dead. Henrietta in pt 2 goes from old lady to old lady demon to some big weird long neck monster thing.

I was wondering how they were going to deal with the kids in the movie. It did not disappoint. Kids did not have plot armor.
The kids in the film weren’t really young kids so I’m not really surprised. Only SPOILERS one real kid death of is the little boy who gets killed in the hallway. That’s it
i met the lead sound designer of the movie he also worked on dunkirk and the first and last man from johann johannson. he is a legendary sound engineer and deserves alot of credit for this movie

I’m such a big fan of evil dead, I’m so happy to hear this. My buddy went to see it last night with a date and uh, they had no context to what evil dead is and hated it. Them hating it gave me so much faith in this movie, that it isn’t made for a general audience and that it is, unapologetically and evil dead movie. Can’t wait to see this!
Also my dude will probably never see her again because who would take someone to evil dead on a first date lmao.

For people wondering about the QR codes and Plague Seeker, it is Charlie's new comic book. He has mentioned it a few times on stream.
I haven't watched the movie yet. But judging from this scene that Charlie just described at 3:07, I think this scene is a reference to another scene in Evil Dead 2 where Possessed Henrietta's eyeball popped out after getting her head smashed with the cellar door and then flying directly into Bobby Joe's mouth as she was screaming in panic.
Love to hear this movie lives up to its hype can't wait to see it. Evildead movies have been my favorite horror movies of all time and glad to see it continue.

The part where the boy founds the underground library and you can hear the small cries from the priests got me shivers.
I never got into the show beyond season 1 because I thought the dark humor and style of Evil Dead works best as a one sitting, one chunk of content. I’m glad they’re back with another movie.
The show is great but season 3 was a bit of a mess
I binged the entire show because the style of Evil Dead is addictive to me.
I saw the first 3 seasons and they were absolutely great.
But the humor was a bit over done and took away from the fear factor.
I don't remember bieng scared even once throughout the first 2 seasons.

For some reason I didn't get into the 2013 Evil Dead. maybe because it didn't have Bruce Campbell in it. I was automatically against it. However I just watched it the other day and totally think it's bad a** and a great entry to the series. Looking forward to this new one.

My understanding of demons was that they have existed since the dawn of time and they were Lucifer's servants that joined him when he was kicked out from heaven. Spirits and ghosts are "dead" that were once human right?
