I actually think jumpscares can be genuinely effective as long as it has proper buildup and payoff so the audience doesn’t feel cheated. Two of my favorites of all time are the hospital scene in The Exorcist III and the famous “you’re gonna need a bigger boat” scene in Jaws
I remember watching "The Fragile" as a 13 year old and fucking shat myself. Idk if it holds up now but someone should watch it and let me know if you liked it. Same with "Mirrors" that's a really good film (first one) and also "The Devil" you have to figure out who is the devil on an elevator and it all comes together to make a coherent story. It's pretty suspenseful for a low budget movie that takes place in a fucking elevator. So they are my 3 suggestions. The Fragile, Mirrors and The Devil (I think it's that idk) from memory they're really good and creepy or nowadays itll be good bad. So enjoy those recommendations and let me know what you guys thought! God Bless ❤
not really a horror movie but the jumpscare in Mulholland Drive is one of the best, especially since you know its coming and then bam! it still gets ya. the exorcist 3 is a great one.
@@calibricalypso yeah it's a very well made movie for the location of it and the budget. One of Horrors forgotten movies but it needs to be remembered as it was just intense ! Glad I helped you remember
One of the many things I didn't like about the movie was the repetitivity of the jumpscares. Every SINGLE time it would just be silence, and then jumpscare. Character being alone, looks around, creepy music in backround, creepy music stops for about 6 seconds average, and then BAM!!! And that happens like 45 times in the movie. Every. Single. Time. It was to the point where everytime there was silence, I was like "jumpscare incoming" and then wasn't scared cause I expected it. Also, from what I remember from the movie, the delivery woman/girl who died from the nun was never discovered or mentioned again. Why??? And lastly, it was SO STUPID how the literal devil, satan, lucifer himself, was only there just to scare and chase a couple of kids (for no reason mind you), got STOPPED by a wooden door with the little girls holding it, and was like SO much weaker than the nun, who I think is supposed to be a lower demon. Also, that scene when the nun got the artifact and had that angel/powerful scene, it reminded me of the mandela catalogue. Was that just me?
I perfectly agree, I have been a horror fan for years and recently, no not just recently, ever since I started I've seen these tropes and only SOME films manage to do it. This has been extremely evident in recent years. I am an aspiring horror writer and though I still have a deep love for the genre, people aren't willing to do something different, so Im trying to so we don't have to suffer with this mediocrity anymore.
I thought the part where the old lady encountered her deceased son in the chapel area where he died and the nun used him to kill her exceptionally unsettling. Also found it funny they used a goat man as the lady who played Kate was Susan from the chronicles of narnia.
I loved the movie. Yeah the jumpscares are “copy and paste” but I enjoyed it because to me it’s telling a story of Ed and Loraine Warren and because I’m fascinated by spirits and ghosts. Idk maybe i’m biased because of it but I loved it!
@@Kaunte that’s one of the reasons the movie failed to me. The warrens being left out means that the movie has almost no plot significance whatsoever. It’s really annoying that this movie was shitty cuz valak is a scary ass nigga, and they could’ve done so much with Ed and Lorraine in the movie.
The answer to Charlie's questions is simple The demon used all of its mana at the beginning of the movie so by the end it can't even execute a simple teleportation spell or any of its other mana consuming abilities. And for why it leads the "heroes" to how they can defeat it, you've already answered this it's indeed humiliation fetish. The connection is Maurice, the character. He is the subject of an exorcism video the Warrens are showing at the university during The Conjuring, and the reason why Ed didn't want Lorrain to go with him to a small investigation where they show a couple that the sounds they hear at night are actually a pipe in their house. During the exorcism Lorrain and Maurice, possessed by the Nun/demon, have a connection where she’s shown how Ed is going to die. This sends her into a deep depression, which she's still recuperating during this movie. The demon is Valak; so, this ordeal is supposed to be resolved by the end of the second Conjuring movie. At this rate I would not be surprised if they make a Nun 3 or 5 at some point. (Valak probably won't go away this easily if market is right for a new Nun movie.) Now the character of Maurice is somewhat changed to fit The Nun universe, or he is still possessed while older, and that’s when the Warrens help?

@@jebbush6657 that's fair, but I do appreciate how most horror at least tries to be entertaining. Even if it succeeds for the wrong reasons and ends in the runs.
I came back from the movie yesterday and I also told my friend who I went with that the scene with the magazine covers was kinda creative and maybe some smaller scenes, but EVERYTIME it had to be ruined by a jumpscare or a cheap scare that I couldn't help laugh at instead of being scared.
Usually the explanation, at least demon wise, is that they have to inhabit a body and they like to toy and play around and cause mischief a lot more than outright accomplish their ultimate goal. They're pompous, cocky, arrogant and think it's impossible to be beaten, which of course always ends up with them losing because they have to and whatever. But of course the majority of horror movies do this very poorly. Much as I love the Conjuring films themselves, the evil in all three falls into these same issues. It spends so much time dicking around and being scary, that it eventually loses outright because it only bothers to "try" and even that is too generous (the fucking nun in 2 literally could have just flung Ed out the damn window and onto the tree if it really wanted to) when it's about to lose. And yeah, we've seen this done to death. We need villains, especially in horror movies, that don't dick around.

The haunting cinematic universe xD. I do hope in the list of movies they are doing they actually have a Avenger type movie where all the monsters come together lol and get destroyed or kill that family :P
I feel like the nun not attacking the children and simply making them uneasy around her was either to show that the demon had some level of empathy, or whatever the term is, and couldn't bring itself to harm kids, plus the kids had no reason to be in the way and the nun was more focused on getting that artifact it wanted
I like the nun... shes actually a really great horror movie villain. she is super creepy, shes always creeping up in the shadows they do a really good job with the jump scares with her, her whole aesthetic is also super creepy and well done similar to art the clown from terrifier, and last but not least the nun movies are about relics, which are dope. I've never heard the analogy of jumpscares being the horror equivalent of tickling, but it's extremely apt.
That part when a group of 12 year old girls held the door closed from the Devil goat ramming it’s way in to the room was masterclass entertainment.
I mean it's an apparition it's not even supposed to be real, so I think it makes sense for a spectre to not be 100% op

Horror movie idea: A normal scene and a monster is spotted looking directly at them, the second they lock eyes their vision tunnels into the monsters eyes and it fades to waking up. They would remember what just happened but think it was a just a bad dream. Then it happens again and again until they can figure out a way to find it without seeing it, and then kill it. I came up with the idea because ive had a nightmare like that and id want to get the tunneling visuals perfect, i felt completely paralyzed and everything started tunneling towards the monster and i woke up terrified.

I actually think jumpscares can be genuinely effective as long as it has proper buildup and payoff so the audience doesn’t feel cheated. Two of my favorites of all time are the hospital scene in The Exorcist III and the famous “you’re gonna need a bigger boat” scene in Jaws
Or just so incredibly out of pocket that it’s actually unexpected
God Bless ❤

Like how right under this, La Llaronna is "Up Next"

(Valak probably won't go away this easily if market is right for a new Nun movie.)
