    My 12 yr old daughter just started Volleyball this year. She had a great and consistent underhand serve. Now they are doing overhand and her first 3 matches were good. This last one she was very inconsistent. I am here to learn so I can work with her at home. Thanks for the tips.

      If your serve isn’t high enough, you may be tossing it too far forward, behind you, or to the sides. If you can get the toss good, then the rest kind of falls into place.

    • @wooshed479
      @wooshed479 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Try to focus more on where you want to hit the ball, at some point it will be more natural as you keep growing, alway remember the moment when you hit the ball right so that you know that you can indeed hit the ball right.. tossing the ball right before you serve is an important factor too for a good serve, so maybe try working on that too. Remember to keep practicing, but don't be too hard on yourself and remember that we can always improve because practice makes perfect :)

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could work on serving short so you get a feel of how you need to contact the ball to serve not so deep. Also, often serves that go deep and out cross the net high. So, you could try serving the ball so the ball crosses the net lower. Aim for below the top of the antenna.

    Nice video. I have some questions about bumping/ passing (I'm a noobie) but I couldn't find a video about it from you. When you're bumping from an angle (or is it called pass?), how do you make sure the ball doesn't go flying off in a random direction? In other words, how do I work on my aim and control? 😕

    • @anarchisticcat3913

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1) Get the arms out early 2) Don't bend the elbows 3) Face the incoming ball (don't face where you are trying to pass it) 4) Angle the arms to the target ( You may need to lower the inside shoulder) 5) Make contact evenly on both arms 6) Freeze the passing platform after you make the pass 7) Avoid swinging the arms (Swinging the arms will cause you to have less control)

    do you necessarily have to be strong to get a powerful serve, and is it ok if you serve with a fist to get more power?

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Practicing your serve is usually the best way to get stronger for serving. So you need more repetitions. If you make a fist, you'll have less control with your serve. Have an open hand and focus on getting the entire hand (palm and fingers) on the ball. Focus on making contact through the center. So focus really hard on the center of the ball as you are about to make contact. Hit the ball straight through the center and you'll have more power.

  • @hsinchu9570
    @hsinchu9570 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I try to hit the ball with stiff hand, stop the hand once hitting the ball (i.e. no full swing) as told to generate the flow but the ball won't get over the net. Sometimes, it even drops at the 10 feet line at my side of the court. Why?

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Why not take a full swing? The reason to not take a full swing is to be more accurate and consistent with placing the ball. You could stop the hand after contact if you are focusing on getting a floating action on the ball. But if you can't even get the ball over the net, I would spend more time focused on how you contact the ball. 1) Get stronger with more repetitions, 2) Contact the center of the ball. If the ball spins, you missed the center. 3) Focus on a consistent technique. You'll become stronger just by using a consistent movement pattern. 4) If you have trouble getting the ball over the net when serving, aim for a spot on the ceiling above the net. 5) If you're having trouble getting the ball over the net when attacking near the net, focus on contacting the ball with a vertical arm, where the ball is more above you at contact and not out in front of you at contact.

    I joined my schools volleyball club with no experience, I was put into the B team so I just wanna get better at serving (weak spot of my game) to get promoted before actual games start)
    I’m not an athletic beast by any means but I am relatively sporty and I play lots of basketball. Surprisingly however my serves are either incredibly inaccurate or too weak. If the ball doesn’t hit my hand perfectly or if I don’t use the bottom of my palm it will not go well. I’m gonna try fix it before next weeks practice.

      @DennisJacksonvts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      When you do something good you want it to be easy for the coach to remember you so wear clothing that stands out. And dress like a volleyball player. Stay focused on volleyball when you are at tryouts. Always hustle and run (don't walk) everywhere you go. Coaches don't want to see players walk around slowly to shag balls or get water. Have a positive attitude and be respectful to your coach and everyone else. Relax and try your best. Be excited to be there. The better you are at acting like you belong, the more likely they will pick you.

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To serve with a lower trajectory, focus on contacting the ball more in front of the body. Sometimes to serve lower, I will contact the ball with a slightly bent elbow with the ball out in front. Also, focus on becoming aware of where the net is. Aim so the ball crosses the net above the net, but below the top of the antenna. You could also practice aiming for the top of the net. This will help you get a feel of what it's like to serve it at a lower trajectory. The key is getting a feel of where the net is so you can hit the ball just high enough to cross without it going into the net.

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As you're tossing, focus on the center of the ball. Also, you can practice hitting the ball straight down into the ground. Hit, then catch it after it bounces back up. Do this quickly for many repetitions. Listen for the sound you make when you contact. The sound it makes is different when you get the entire hand on the ball. The more you do this, the more consistent you'll become at contacting the ball.

      Dennis Jackson yes i’m having trouble getting enough power and getting it high enough

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@chloeminnis9779 Chloe here are some things that might help. 1) Focus on contacting the center of the ball. So, always be look at the center of the ball when you make contact. If the ball spins, then you missed the center. Hitting the center will make the ball go farther. 2) Pick a spot on the ceiling above the net and aim for it. 3) If the ball is going in the net lot, then "the toss" and also "where you make contact" is usually a problem. The more out in front you contact the ball, the lower you will serve it. If you aren't comfortable contacting the ball up above your shoulder then strength is probably a problem. I'm a big fan of push ups, pull ups, and medicine ball throws. If you struggle at push ups, you can start on the knees and just focus on lowering and gradually work up to pushing back up. Also, keep the elbows in a position near the body (don't point the elbows out). Elbows near the body will be harder, but this position is better on your shoulders. For pull ups, start first by lowering down from the bar slowly. Lower down as slow as you can. Eventually you will be able to do a regular pull up. For the medicine ball throws, focus on overhead throws and medicine ball slams. Also, throw the ball with one hand. If you don't have a weighted ball available, you could just use a volleyball or even a basketball. Try some of these tips and let me know how it goes!

      Get under it more and wrap your hand over it. Create topspin so the ball drops down into the court.

    • @webmonkeyPD
      @webmonkeyPD 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DennisJacksonvts love what you are doing, but this is bad advice, you should not create topspin with a standing serve, it just makes it easier for receivers (top spin makes the ball go up after contact). She is not going over the net because of angle and lack of power, going under the ball is good advice, but the key is weight shifting, you should end the serve with your back foot in front.

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@webmonkeyPD The advice was for hitting when near the net because this is the situation where a persons height really matters. When serving, your height isn't as important. For serving, send power through the center of the ball. If the ball spins, the power didn't go through the center. If you hit the ball through the center and the ball goes into the net, then the problem is the toss. You need to toss the ball in a way that allows you to get more under the ball. Experiment with your toss to figure out where you need to toss the ball in order to hit the ball so it goes above the net. I think it works well to aim for a spot on the ceiling above the net. If you're hitting positioned near the net and contacting the ball below the top of the net, then you need to create topspin in order to keep the ball from going out of bounds. Also, when serving, the weight transfer is from the back foot to the front foot. This will help you serve with more power.

      Aim for a spot on the ceiling above the net. This will help you get the ball higher. To serve harder, focus on hitting the center of the ball. Start by practicing serving from the middle of the court. Focus on a good solid contact straight through the center of the ball. Do this successfully for 5 in a row, then take a couple steps back. Repeat until you are serving from beyond the endline for a successful serves of 5 in a row.

      Geniera Cal maybe work on contacting the ball. Practice making contact through the center. If the ball spins, then you missed the center. Also, if you haven't hit 1000's of times, then you likely will improve your hitting just by getting more repetitions.

    Hello Mr. Jackson. I am coaching a 9th/10th grade girls team for the first time and I have an experienced female player that punches the ball with the heel of her hand to get it across the net. She really wants to correct this and I have yet to find something that works. It seems it is too deeply ingrained in her mind. I have worked with her on her toss/lift, her momentum shift and her footwork. But she cannot get out of the act of drawing her arm straight back and punching the ball with the heel of her hand. Without exaggeration, the movement she makes is that of the defensive move of punching someone in the nose with the heel of her hand. She really doesn't have any kind of overhand motion in her arm when she's serving. Anything you could offer would be gratefully welcomed. Thank you

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually they are serving like this because they are afraid to miss their serve. Have her practice hitting the ball correctly. Teach her to hit with topspin to get a feel of what it's like to get the entire hand and all fingers contacting the ball. Have her wrap her hand over the ball as she makes contact. Have her be aggressive and try to hit the ball as hard as she can so she changes her mindset about how to serve. Also, she probably isn't standing in the correct position as she tosses the ball for serve. The foot in front should be the foot opposite her hitting hand. Shoulders should rotate as she brings her hand forward to make contact. I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

      It sounds like you may be contacting the ball too far out in front. Aim for a spot on the ceiling above the net and focus on contacting the ball more above your head. Get strong from more repetitions. Keep practicing and you'll get it.

    How do you practice serving without a net?

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have a wall, you could mark the height of the net on the wall. Or use a rope as a net. You just need something to serve over. If all you have is a volleyball, you could practice serving to partner. Focus on having a consistent toss and contact. Watch the ball after contact. Watch to see if it spins. If it has side spin, then you missed the center.

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts  ปีที่แล้ว

      You may be over thinking this. I wouldn't focus much on the shoulder when serving. Rotating the shoulders can cause a lot of serving errors. Often I will stand with shoulders square to the net when serving. Not taking a step and just focusing on the toss and contact. When spiking at the net, rotating the shoulders can be important for creating more power. However, when serving accuracy is more important than power, you don't want a lot of movement at the shoulders. Extra movement will cause you to be less accurate.

    My shoulder hurts whenever i hit the ball ...is there any reason for that ...like poor form or stance???

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's likely poor form if your shoulder hurts when you spike. Your shoulder shouldn't hurt when you spike. There are exercises you can do to strengthen your back to make you stronger for spiking. Also, core body exercises that involve using the entire body when spiking is important. Also, there is a spiking technique called "elbow to wrist" that puts emphasis on the "elbow to wrist" movement of the spike and takes emphasis away from the shoulder. I like push ups, pull ups, and overhead presses for improving upper body shoulder strength.

      @DennisJacksonvts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Don't give up! I'm sure you'll get it! Here are a few tips... Try to have a consistent serving motion. 1) Consistent toss. Try to toss the ball the same way every time. You want to toss the ball in front of the hitting arm. If the toss is wrong, then the ball won't end up in the right spot for when you make contact. So the toss is really important. 2) Always stand in the same position (opposite foot slightly forward) and take a small step as you toss. 3) Focus on contacting the center of the ball. When you hit the center, the ball will go straight and you'll have more power. 4) If the ball isn't traveling high enough, then focus on a spot on the ceiling above the net. Aim for this spot. 5) Focus on each and every repetition. We want to develop a consistent serving motion. Everything from the standing position ready to serve all the way to your body position after you contact the ball.... this needs to be consistent. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions.

If the ball spins, you missed the center. Focus on a consistent toss with a consistent contact. More repetitions and you'll start serving it harder.

      You could practice hitting targets on the court. For example, place two chairs about 5 feet apart. Aim to place your serve between them. Once get 3 in a row between, then move the chairs closer together. When you serve in a game, focus on how you want your opponent receiving the ball. For example, see if you can serve in a way that gets them to move backward when they pass. Or just serve to their right for example.

      The topspin jump serve is just like the approach to spike. I think it's best to toss with the spiking hand. Toss the ball high, wait, then take an approach fast to get to the ball. Also, broad jumping into the ball will help you serve with more power. If you're right handed, finish steps right-left. If you're left handed, finish steps left-right. This will help you get to the ball and create momentum gliding towards the net.
