  • In this video, I go over how to diagnose issues with a Kohler Courage 20 hp engine. We found that a push rod had jumped off and a blown head gasket. Thanks for watching!

I have the same engine. Just finally got oil leak fixed, valve cover. I believe my head gasket is leaking a little. Still runs good n mows. But leaks oil exhaust side of engine n smokes sporadically. Kinda black on engine where head gasket is. Is it still safe to mow grass with it. I do take multiple breaks to let it cool some. Thank you. Great videos.

I have the exact same motor on the Toro with the same issue. I pulled the head and did the valve job and clean up put all back but still won't run. Leak down test revealed bunch of hissing noise off the head hole. It has to be a blown head gasket so that is what i will be replacing next.
Actually the initial compression test i had about 30psi. That is not enough to start and run.
Head gasket showed som bad section at bottom. If head gasket does not do it then what left is the piston ring.
Thanks for the video. It gives me some encouragement to continue fixing. I was on this thing for days with the long grasses and the wife whining.

Good luck! You can spray WD-40 down the cylinder and if the compression reading raises it’s the rings. I bet it’s the head gasket, usually you can hear the external leaks. Also, 100% check the case bolts, they are notorious for coming loose and cracking the case on the right hand side of the mower. This is a common problem. Make sure you check those case bolts.
      Thanks for watching!
