  • Friends, let us rejoice whenever the grace of God is on display. The point of the sacraments is so that God’s grace may flood the world, but the Lord can operate outside of our formal structures. He desires these gifts for us, but as the creator of these structures, he is never limited by them.

    At one time in my life, I was at the bottom of the cesspool, working a job from hell, going through the end of a sorrowful relationship, and driving a 45 minute drive home. I turned on the radio, and got a Christian radio station from a little Pennsylvania town nearby. And who spoke during my commute? Pastor Charles Stanley. He brought me to the feet of Jesus, my Savior. He inspired me back to my Catholic church, where my values had been embedded. He literally applied my life to scripture, truly and literally. I still listen to him all the time, and of course, Bishop Barron.

    This channel is getting 1k more followers every week, and for good reason. Excellent sermon Bishop Barron, those passages have always been a comfort to me when I think about when I used to be a Protestant (converted to Catholicism due in part to your ministry) and wondering why God would let us be in a place that is outside his Church. But the passages you referred to give me comfort to know that His grace is for everyone and that no time was wasted in my wandering Protestant years. But praise the Lord, I’m now in the Roman Catholic Church and couldn’t be happier!

    Dear Bishop Barron, i was introduced to you via a Lex Friedman podcast on Christianity and the Catholic Church. This podcast has turned out to be one of my favorite of Lex's. Both my parents were born in Poland and survived WWII and immigrated first to Canada and later to the US, where i was born. My brother, sisters and i were raised speaking Polish in the home. In my childhood days i went to a Russian Orthodox Church on Saterday's to learn Russian and worship Jesus and on Sunday the family would go to a Polish Catholic Mass in Los Angeles, again to worship Jesus. Currently, i go to a non-denominational Church in the central California coast whose moto is Love God and Love others. What i loved about this sermon was how you pointed out that the Catholic Church has all the gifts of God available to it, but certain gifts could be exercised in other context. I have since listened to several of your sermons and talks on varios issues and am super-blessed by your gift of teaching and your love for Christ.
    ...may our loving and merciful father in Heaven continue to bless you with wisdom and the peace and joy that His Word brings us.

    This was a terrific homily! As a convert to Catholicism from Presbyterianism, I so appreciate it. I loved coming into the fullness of the church that Christ intended, the Roman Catholic Church, but I know that the 30 years I spent as an evangelical served me well and prepared me for where I am now. Of course, I could never return to those former partially understood ways of the fullness of the faith, as I so dearly love the Eucharist. I do have a feeling you’re going to get hammered by the strict “no salvation outside the Catholic Church” crowd and the non-liturgical Evangelical crowd. Which is probably a good indication that you’re absolutely correct. I’m so blessed to be able to support Word on Fire. Your apostolate is so important. Thank you.

      I'm Protestant and I like Catholicism because it gets all what I see as the most important parts (Jesus Christ is our Messiah, was born of the virgin Mary, is God in the flesh who came to Earth to die for our sins, and whoever believes in God/Jesus will be saved). However, I get hung up on things like praying to Saints and Mary. I know in Catholicism, praying doesn't mean worshiping the Saints, more just asking favors like you would a friend in Christ. Kind of like, "Hey, you're in heaven, could you give me a good word up there for me? Maybe talk to God about this?" But I still can't get around the concept that Catholics pray to them. Saints are just people and people don't have the powers of telepathy. How could people hear prayers? If I want to ask my friend a favor, I can't just pray to them. They don't have the ability to read my mind or hear me from 1,000 miles a way. If someone living on the same planet as me can't do that, how can dead people do that? Sorry for the dumb questions, I'm just really confused. I've thought about concerting to Catholicism, but some things get in the way. I worry, "What if this is wrong?"
      It reminds me of King Saul, who prayed to God asking Him what to do and God wouldn't answer him. So Saul sought out to talk to a man who had died, Samuel, to ask him for advice. In return, God was angry at him. Isn't that the same thing in that they're trying to speak to dead people? It scares me! Again, sorry for the dumb question.

      Do you love your friends & family? Dont you ask them to pray with you & for you? So what's your problem talking to saints? Hopefully, we will be with them in heaven with the Lord. So are you gonna ignore them because they're not Jesus? We relate to them on earth now as we will in the future in heaven.
      Why do you say that the saints are dead? Didn't Jesus say, "I am the resurrection & the life. He who believes in Me ...shall never die..."
      Do you believe that you will go to heaven when you die (hopefully)?. Heavenly beings are not constrained by space , distance or even time.

    • @bane1504
      @bane1504 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@arianazonatea3185 Being in Heaven the saints and our Blessed Mother are immersed in the grace and holiness of the Lord on High, it is through the power of God that they can hear our pleas while in heaven because they are not constrained as they are here on earth by distance. Trust me, the Lord knows your heart, trying to honor and pray for intercession from other members of the body of Christ could never be a sin and unless you were intentionally trying to elevate a person to godhood, then you have nothing to worry about. As for Mary, if you read revelation, there is distinct imagery of Mary being in heaven, glorified as the Mother of God, she is honored in heaven and thus too, Christ would like us to honor his Mother as he does, she played a very unique role in the plan of salvation and it is good to honor her, not elevate her to the level of God as some would think, but to honor her as a marvel of the goodness of God's beautiful creation, he is an artist, we all ought to honor and show respect to his magnificent craftsmanship!
      So do not worry, if there is something calling you to the Holy Catholic Church, then I implore you, embrace it by investigating, learning more, talking to Catholic priests, read some books or watch videos by Catholic converts such as Scott Hahn or Steve Ray. There is lots of information available that properly explain much of the beliefs and traditions of the Catholic faith, just approach it with a genuine interest to find the truth and you will find the right answer. Follow God, let him take the lead and bring you home. I will pray for you!

    • @myriamc.
      @myriamc. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@arianazonatea3185 One explanation that I heard from father Trujilio on EWTN radio is that the soul is eternal and was not meant to be separated from the body; unfortunately because of the fall, by dying this happens! And do remember God is the God of the living, and if you ask a saint to help you ask God for a favor, it is through God they will be in the know of your prayer He's the One that is communicating that intercession to the saint whom will ask God is this your will or in your plan to grant this person her or his request... Revelation stated of the prayers of the saints on our behalf church militant. Before Our Lord people were in Sheol and would not be able to do anything there for themselves, so possibly one reason that God would disapprove of such act from Saul. Remember people before us had questions just like you and me but the Holy Spirit reveals the truth to her! God bless!🙏🏽🙂

      "No salvation outside the Catholic Church" is a valid teaching. It's often misinterpreted as "If you are not Catholic then you will 100% not be saved". This however, was never the argument that most Traditional Catholics put forward. The idea is that, while it's possible for someone who is not a baptized Catholic to be saved for whatever reason or because of some exception, the general rule is still that those who refuse the Church, knowing what it contains, will not be saved. God can save whoever He wants to save. It's not up to us to decide that for him. But we know that being a Catholic ensures the highest chances for your salvation. Would you gamble with your soul?

    Ever since I was young, when hearing this Gospel during Mass (Mark 9:38-40), it tugs at my heart when Christ says, "whoever is not against us is for us." Even as a kid, I've felt God's mercy and wide-open arms through this verse. Reading this passage reminds me of John 8:7. We as human beings we stick to our self righteousness (myself included), but God is challenging us to show mercy to one another (Matt 9:13); easier said than done. I need the Holy Spirit's help to see how God sees, not as man/human sees.

      Brigid, I love your recognition for the necessity of unity. I do want to offer an amendment to your first statement. We should not be open to other religions. Truth is truth, and we should adhere to it. If the collection of works we call the Bible is Gods word, then other religions may have kernels of truth in them, but they would be distortions of the the full revelation at best. We should not be open to distortions of truth if we have the full revelation. What we should do instead is be open to the people who profess to adhere to other religions, open to the potential that God may work with and through them.

    Bishop Barron I could not agree more. For example I think members of the ecclesiastical hierarchy should stop saying some of the most censorious things about people involved in traditional Catholicism. People who love the Latin mass for example which has been instrumental to Catholics for centuries, instructing the likes of great saints such as St Joan of Arc. I believe we need to step back and ask ourselves why the traditional Latin Mass is being persecuted by people like Pope Francis. I have been to believe it is because that's where Catholicism is truly growing whereas it is truly evanescing in the novus ordo. These are wise words bishop and I think we should ponder them.
