Funny you say this because over time, I’ve been looking at Spyro 1 a lot different, going so far as to rank it above Spyro 2 but I wasn’t sure why. Now I think it’s also because I truly appreciate the simplicity of Spyro 1. It never tries to overextend itself (not that that was a bad thing with the sequels). I can’t explain it but it’s just a well put together package that didn’t need to anything extra to stand out.
As a 27 year old who also also prefers Spyro over Crash but enjoys the fuck out of both, I definitely appreciate your retrospective on these two games here. You put great work into here and hopefully you gain many more subs. Also, make sure you play through Crash 4, it's pretty epic.
Hey there! On the blue gem in Crash 2, there is a hint, though very obscure; I don't know why a player who's collected everything in a level would EVER go back and replay it, but if you do, there's a new spinning translucent box counter in the final hallway of Turtle Woods, showing #/0; how many boxes you've collected, out of zero. This is unique to this level. Again missing this is totally understandable, just wanted to share a fun fact!
Awesome comparison! I agree that if Spyro and Crash swapped initial release dates with Spyro coming out in 1996 instead of 1998 then it would have really been seen as PlayStation's original maskot and would have been more popular. plus I think CTR gave Crash a whole new audience of players. I really hope Spyro gets a proper sequel like Crash because both game series deserve attention as Crash is a more hardcore platformer and Spyro can be seen as much more relaxing adventure game
I only had crash 1 and 3 growing up but never finished them properly, had all 3 of the original spyro games and 100% (or 120/117% if you wish) all three of them while still being new to gaming outside of racing games as a whole, and i've grown up loving them. Keep up the good work, i assumed this would have had thousands of views after finishing the entire video, turns out it's on 300, hopefully that increases in no time, praying for the algorithm to bless you
Awesome video. You produced and did a great job with the presentation and delivery there. 1:08:26 I will play a bit of devil's advocate argue against the the case for a hub world or multi level select in favour of menus. I would argue that a hub world only works well if there's actual purpose behind it. A hub world for the sake of having a hub world may not be a good idea. Like, in something like Super Mario 64, the Hub works as a way of giving the player a safe space to try out Mario's moveset before throwing them into proper levels. In Crash 2 and 3, there are secret areas that feel cooler to access using Crash's moveset. But for something like Crash of the Titans, with a much simpler moveset, would it have much benefit? If anything, you could argue it would slow down the pace as you just want to play the levels and the time spent loading a hub world, then selecting a level and then loading into that level may not be worth it (something you bring up for Mind over Mutant). In addition, the approach of if you are given a set of 5 levels at a time with the freedom to choose between them has potential downsides as well. For one, you could argue the choice is too arbitrary to feel meaningful. Like most players are going to play the 5 levels in the order they are numbered as there isn't much benefit or purpose in "going out of order". I remember one of the old Prince of Persia games had a solution for this issue. The levels were marked with which kind of hazard they generally had and the levels you completed later became more difficult and/or had enemies and hazards from completed levels show up. So now you actually had a choice. Perhaps you'd choose to do the levels in a different order based on what you feel you're better at and it even helped with replayability. Another potential downside of that approach is that since you're given a set of 5 levels at a time you can play in any order, the levels themselves need to be balanced to be reasonable regardless of which order you tackle them so they all have to be at the same level of difficulty. Wheras if they were unlocked in a linear order, later levels could guarantee you had completed prior ones and accommodate higher difficulties or be more challenging more quickly. Thereby allowing a much faster progression.
thank you very much! and very good counterargument toward menu level selection / linearity too. I thoroughly agree. for CotT it seemed like a backward step but overall, you are right
My top 4 favorite series has almost always been Crash, Spyro, Jak and Daxter, and Ratchet and Clank which I've always found interesting that the player base for those games overlaps heavily. Before watching the video, I completely understand why someone would like Spyro more than Crash (or why someone would like Ratchet more than Jak) even though I disagree. I'm already interested in not just this video, but if you're planning to do more of these in the future. There's plenty of playstation (and other console) mascots that would make for a fantastic piece like this
That's actually not true about turtle woods's blue gem. If you go through the level, at the end the box indicator reads X/0 meaning it wants you to not break any boxes since the game makes you learn that getting X/box total gives you the gem

Played all the way through Spyro 1 and tried 2 and 3. Now I'm officially going all the way through Spyro 2. Would I say it's better than Crash though? Well, I grew up on Crash so I may have bias when I say no. Of course, Ratchet & Clank is the best platforming series of all time in my opinion but Crash will always come 2nd for me and Spyro is definitely somewhere in my top five but probably not top 3.
Actually there is a hint in the first level on how to get the blue gem in Crash 2 within the game. As you get to the end, the box count will display "/0", but only if you've gotten the box gem first.
Spyro 2 og level with the fawns trapped in stone had an awesome soundtrack with bagpipes and the final one saved ends with a sudden bass boost in the bagpipes, Which was changed for a similar but different soundtrack in the same level in the remaster

If you asked me what game I prefer the answer would be diffrent from day to day. Its about the mood im in. In my opinion Crash is a lot harder then Spyro because Aku Aku is a bonus if you have him around and he dies with Crash if you fail a jump where Sparx will always be there if Spyro dies, and os alot easier to recover in some level because more passive mobs and respawns of the passive mobs. Maybe the npcs in the Spyro games have gammertags turned on? Or maybe Elora, Hunter, Zoe, and the Professer an spread the word that Spyro's gonna save them?
It's a shame with Enter The Dragonfly, because behind the glitches, sluggish controls and long loading times, there is a fun game hidden there somewhere- not as good as the original trilogy, but potential was there.
for some of the other GBA spyro games, season of flame and attack of the rhynocs/adventure are both good! and also i think that the best version of eternal night from the legend of spyro series is the GBA one. skylanders is also fun, but i can see how getting into those games can seem a bit daunting with all the different toys for playable characters. i mean, you don't _have_ to have a ton of toys, but having more really lets you get more out of the games. also i wouldn't really consider the skylanders games truly spyro games. i saw someone else online put it well, that spyro's better described as a 'celebrity cameo' in the skylanders series
The bike levels in crash 3 can be removed and I'll be happy, also did you know about the secret levels? Eg one of the Dino chase ones, hit the second perch pterodactyl and you'll carried off to a secret level

I first properly tried Spyro with the remake trilogy on PS4 and I instantly liked it. I still prefer Crash at the end of the day but Spyro is definitely up there in top for me as well. Both IPs always seemed very interconnected, they were both great kids in the PSX era, went through a rough teenage phase in the PS2 era (the mediocre games), disappeared after they turned 18 - PS3 era, and came back as well established adults in the PS4 era.
kirby have a lot skills than spyro kirby have copy abilities like fire ability sparks ability water ability ice ability beam ability sword ability morpho knight sword ability cutter ability while spyro have few abilities flame glide charge super charge super fly super flame kirby's fire ability better than spyro's normal flame breath but i still prefer spyro cause more relaxing let's talk about kirby and spyro

"not my throat, i need it for swallowing" "thats one of the most quoted lines I've ever heard"
Honestly idk where you'd have heard it so much before
*quotable. I've only heard it from this game ... and you
3:31 2008... or 2018?
ah crap hahaha
@@pepperedhorv92 XD
Great video, but the game/music audio is way to loud. I can barley hear your voice.
thank you, I'll keep that feedback in mind
6:28 wow never would have guessed that lol
You need to do more videos like this .
mayhaps ... thank you, sir
Both are good, but both pale in comparison to Gex
Maybe the npcs in the Spyro games have gammertags turned on?
Or maybe Elora, Hunter, Zoe, and the Professer an spread the word that Spyro's gonna save them?
Elora, Zoe & Professor maybe. Hunter's too slow. Plus Spyro still never introduced himself til after Glimmer. I prefer the gamertag theory
YES! Finally someone else gets it!
Excellent video man and I can agree with every point you made. 😂 too much nostalgia 😅
hahaha thank you, legend
It's a shame with Enter The Dragonfly, because behind the glitches, sluggish controls and long loading times, there is a fun game hidden there somewhere- not as good as the original trilogy, but potential was there.
Spyro
I like Spyro Enter The Dragonfly but I would like to see it get a remastered version of it too.
Genuinely really like ETD. The soundtrack is class
@@benjeffrey7577 agreed, soundtrack was brilliant
The second Ratchet game had you unknoingly working for the villain for half the game too.
huh, touche. at least the player still didn't necessarily know that haha
I dont think its a competition i think its just what you perfer i would love to see them team up in a songle game with a branching story line
Why he likes Spyro better: because it’s easier & for children. The end.
i am child
"Easy therefore bad"
Nice laptop stickers I want my own
all from Redbubble
for some of the other GBA spyro games, season of flame and attack of the rhynocs/adventure are both good! and also i think that the best version of eternal night from the legend of spyro series is the GBA one.
skylanders is also fun, but i can see how getting into those games can seem a bit daunting with all the different toys for playable characters. i mean, you don't _have_ to have a ton of toys, but having more really lets you get more out of the games. also i wouldn't really consider the skylanders games truly spyro games. i saw someone else online put it well, that spyro's better described as a 'celebrity cameo' in the skylanders series
The bike levels in crash 3 can be removed and I'll be happy, also did you know about the secret levels? Eg one of the Dino chase ones, hit the second perch pterodactyl and you'll carried off to a secret level
yes, sir, as stated and shown in the video
Crash 2 is better than Crash 3.
@@joshuafult84hell no
@@bartdude82 The water levels in Crash 3 already remove it from the conversation lol
Maybe if Spyro had a kick ass sister, he may do better lol.
why couldn't Ignitus save two eggs!?
@@pepperedhorv92 I like Crash over Spyro, but that has more to do with my love for Coco lol.
@@greek1237 I could tell haha but hey, we all have our reasons
@@pepperedhorv92 A while back when Crash Team Rumble got announce (Known as code named Wampa League than, but confirm) I took a pic of Spyro, remove Coco's hair and place it on Spyro and called it Spyro's sister lol. Mostly it has been almost yearly of new Crash games, and Spyro did not have anything since 2018 and that Spyro needed something and I notice Coco has been a large selling point in helping Crash's return.
Both are nostalgic in they’re own way for me but Spyro was a Mitch easier game to play through and I remember every level as to as a kid I could only get to that stupid bridge part and got stuck.
Resistance games were awesome
You're comparing two 3D platformers, one came before and the other after Mario 64, there's no comparison.
hello there peppered horv i also prefer spyro over mario kirby & crash bandicoot but kirby have a lot advantages over spyro spyro is just crash bandicoot's dragon but not a crash bandicoot character can you hide my comments because some person likes my comment then false but i also love mario kirby especially crash bandicoot
Mario 64 controls like ass? Get good scrub
But I agree, Spyro is better than Crash Bandipoot
at least we can agree there
I first properly tried Spyro with the remake trilogy on PS4 and I instantly liked it. I still prefer Crash at the end of the day but Spyro is definitely up there in top for me as well. Both IPs always seemed very interconnected, they were both great kids in the PSX era, went through a rough teenage phase in the PS2 era (the mediocre games), disappeared after they turned 18 - PS3 era, and came back as well established adults in the PS4 era.
hahaha perfect analogy
In my opinion
Spyro has health
Need I say less?
thought this was a haiku for a second
@@pepperedhorv92 just saying tho
Spyro is easier due to the mechanic of hp compared to crash
This but it's versus Mario
kirby have a lot skills than spyro kirby have copy abilities like fire ability sparks ability water ability ice ability beam ability sword ability morpho knight sword ability cutter ability while spyro have few abilities flame glide charge super charge super fly super flame kirby's fire ability better than spyro's normal flame breath but i still prefer spyro cause more relaxing let's talk about kirby and spyro
good taste in games you have there. nice profile pic too ;)
mu fuggin sub'd
Everyone does. There's no freedom in crash.
if only they all knew
Everyone does? There's no skill in Spyro 😂
Don’t show caddicarus this video
he's my favourite TH-camr. please show him
We have placed Crash Bandicoot at 9? I can't take you seriously enough to continue watching.
Okey dokey den!
Have a nice trip!
