Three things! 1. Overall, a great overview of probably my favorite game(s) of all time! 2. The, "G's," in Gnasty Gnork are supposed to be silent. 3. You can totally aim those grenades while playing as Agent 9! Go back and play it again. If you hold the throw button, it gives you a dotted arc and an X which you use to aim! Again, overall, great job!
Regarding the story elements in these retro games, don’t forget that back in the day every game had an instruction booklet with some background information on the story and characters. Also in the case of the Spyro games :)
I could be wrong, but for the gem placement behind the start in cliff town, i want to say from certain points, from a distance, you see the gem shine. It's a moment that teaches you to look around for those hints for later levels. I think you were just in the wrong spot to see the hint where they were.
I got to say great video! I'm glad the longer format is persistent to this day. I love to load an hour or 3 hour video on my phone to pass the time at work. Spyro the dragon means alot ot me, and the crippled series to this day pains me. Anytime I would talk about Majora's mask, re2, and Spyro, and someone got excited, was sureal to me. Lasting friendship for sure. Riptos rage was my favorite of the bunch. Don't apologize for asking for likes and subs from this.... You can literally hear the passion this series brought to you. You've earned my sub!
Dude how do you get confused they say gnasty gnorc one time. But somehow Spyro is saying it wrong every time they mention nasty norc. They pronounce it just like that without the g sound. Play through the game again and actually listen they only say it with a g sound once as a joke.
49:15 I mean this is the same as in Cliff Town but you called it's level design shite when a barrier confused you... 50:20 Every type of layout in the second game can be found in the first (backtraking, shooting cannon, if you're taking about orb challenges thery are in the same catagory as mini games just sectioned off parts of the level for that one specific gameplay elements. Also 50:25 and 1:02:00 Doesn't that make the level design worse since every level is predictable now being a donut? Even Spyro 1/2 has linear and donut levels, Spyro 3 only has donuts making it have less variety. Point A to B is bad but donuts are good? Spyro 3 is just as or even more linear than Spyro 1. There's no real branching paths to speak of when everything leads to mini-game levels and having layers/floors is common in all three games. Very interesting video though good job.
This was great! I’m sorry this doesn’t have more views. It was really nice to jump back into this world without having to get a ps1 or an emulator. It was interesting hearing your criticisms about the game. Lastly, I’m surprised you didn’t touch on the music! It was so well done. Good job on this video 🙌🏻.
Really awesome video man, I can't believe this hasn't gotten more views. I was kinda disappointed that you didn't talk about the soundtracks at all because the music holds most of the nostalgia in the games for me (especially Ripto's Rage, Autumn Plains especially 👌). The music adds a lot to the games in terms of ambience/game feel. However, I totally understand why it was left out, because music is especially hard to tackle from an objective point of view. OVERALL, amazing video, would definitely recommend to anyone that expresses interest in the Spyro trilogy. Great job man.

I don't normally comment on videos, but I just wanted to show some respect for someone who seemed to work pretty hard on a big project like this. I like listening to retrospectives and analysis videos, so when I seek them out and find videos by people I'm not familiar with, I'm still willing to give them a shot when they talk about games I care about. I enjoyed the video, and although the audio sometimes gets a bit high and low, it was overall enjoyable. I'm surprised to hear your praise on Tree Tops. I have never heard anyone say anything positive about that level, and while I may not personally agree, I can't help but respect someone who appreciates something that seems so universally hated. That being said, I enjoyed the snow leopard quest a lot as a kid. Snow leopards and leopards as a whole were some of my favorite animals at a young age, and I remember replaying the level multiple times just to get to that part, even if it was easy. Overall, I appreciate the work you put into this and I intend to look over the rest of your channel to see if anything else catches my interest. I know this comment comes a few years after you've uploaded this, but thanks for giving me something to listen to during a mindless shift.

Hey, love this video; thanks for making it. It brings up many things: level design, animation, importance of good controls, straying away from core gameplay, your love for certain parts and annoyances, etc. Your analysis of game design here is awesome to watch/listen to. I'll be sure to rewatch to pick more things out where Spyro got it wrong. I say this because I'm working on a 3d platformer collect-a-thon myself, it's called PB & Jay. I could talk for hours about level design and 3d platformers in general, but I digress. Once again, thanks for making this video. :)
Hey! I've been thinking about doing a Spyro retrospective since I just finished the Reignited Trilogy (thank God they finally released it on PC). I'm watching every bit of content I can find to give me ideas on what to talk about and I was really surprised at how few views this had given the effort you put into it, not to mention the humor was on point which is really hard to do. Really great work, keep making stuff like this.
I was literally playing the original Spyro 3 and thought I'd look up reviews on the original trilogy. Stumbled across this video and listened to the whole thing. Great video! I do have one question: would you consider doing a video on your opinion about the reignited trilogy?
Yeah no, bianca isn't the best villain in the series, far from it in fact. Simply because she wasn't willing to harm baby dragons and switched sides half way into the game. 59:40
It's kind of weird that you frame Spyro 1's levels as linear, when the path from the beginning to the exit is rarely even half of the levels content, nor are you forced along it. Good video all the same.
I really dislike how the Spyro 1 portion is essentially "yadda yadda I didn't like this game so let's get it over with because I started with a later game in the trilogy." Some of the best designed parts like hard to reach areas which require you to think outside the box for those last few gems and, most importantly, are entirely optional for beating the game and were clearly meant for the kids of the time to get more out of their playtime and genuinely feel smart for having figured it out rather than the game handing them the 100% completion for free with a radar are being painted as horrors of game design and flaws for some reason. Really didn't look forward to what is no doubt a praising to high heavens of the second and third games so I didn't stick around for the rest. For what I was hoping would be a fair and balanced dissection with a title like that to start what is essentially 30 minutes of nothing but complaining was a sore disappointment.
I applaud you for liking the first one over the others. I have completion on reignite trilogy and still to this day since I was a kid, I can not bring myself around to put the first above the second or third. But that’s not saying much as they are all very fun in their own ways
It was insinuated that it was a tv interview through the use of the boom mic. The idea was that gnasty gnorc was watching from his world on a tv of some sort. His name is spelt Gnasty Gnorc but is pronounced Nasty Norc. Surprised you brought up how you can get lost in the first hub world of the first game. Never see people ask for games to be more linear rather than open before? It gives the player freedom. You spawn at a dragon statue who tells you what to do. If you go to the balloonist he tells you what he needs to fly to next hub world. It doesn't take long for people to realize that they can go into the portals into other worlds and collect gems and eggs there. As for cliff town, the boundary is clearly marked with poles to signify that it is the area you can't proceed beyond. It wasn't stopping you from going behind the first building. Finding these secret areas were half the fun of the old spyro games
Holy crap. Great job on the video! I honestly ever played about an hour of Spyro 2. I should get to that game some time. Disappointed that I haven’t done that yet.
Growing up is realising that the seccond game is the weakest one. When I replayed the trilogy I realised how tedious some of its mechanics are. Not a bad game, but it just doesnt hit as hard as the other two
I am guessing you didn't grow up with the original game. What you need to remember is this game was designed for 90s kids who had no issues whatsoever spending all of their time in one level. Your issue with Cliff Town is the problem with the current gaming world. Nobody wants inconvenience and nobody has the mental fortitude to go a few minutes without cheating and "looking it up". These games were designed for kids to think outside the box and test the boundaries of their environment. Spyro 1 is my favourite. Always will be. Blinded by nostalgia and proud.
Hey, bro. First up I'd like to say I really like the video! While I disagree with a sum of what you said I found it to be entertaining none-the-less and had a great time watching it. So much so that I find myself on the third watch, haha. There's been something that's gotten my panties in a bunch since the first watch-through and it's the call-out on Gnasty Gnorc's name and how the characters interpret it. I've always felt the reason some of the characters pronounce the silent G and some don't has always struck me as a gag on silent letters and/or the dragon's lack of real knowledge and/or respect of this person they're apparently being interviewed on. So much so that they don't even know how/care to pronounce his name properly. Spyro himself never calls him by "G"nasty because Gnasty has established himself as a genuine threat capable of single-handedly and rather easily globally CCing every dragon. Of course this is all thought proccess from a smooth-brain boi, so it's entirely possible I've looked too far into it.
I liked this video but I disagree with the gem 💎 finding being frustrating I loved it and had vary little trouble 100% thare wer sum that wer tuff and a paying in the ass to fined but that was part of the fun same goos for crash it was tuff finding all the jems especially the cullerd 1s but it made the games 10x more fun.
Ok so you don’t pronounce the Gs in Gnasty Gnorc... same as you don’t pronounce a G when saying Gnorc. The joke is the interviewer getting his name wrong and the dragon then corrects them by saying it correctly. They definitely confused a lot of people with this one though.
"Being relevant means me getting views" Me two years after upload: I'm about to pull a sneaky on ya Edit: good video. My favourite is the first but at least you are mostly honest and objective about the differences of the games which can show how they can appeal to different demographics of gamers. I like the simplicity of the first where you can just go into a level collect all the treasure and dragons without any road blocks or annoying missions. Just you and the righteous quest of saving dragonkin.
hi, i really enjoyed the video. great job. i wanted to say that i think for a game that could be the first video game ever having an easy first boss is good. i have seen many people really struggle with the boss in toasty and feel so good when they finally accomplish it.
I could be the hundredth person to call out that you missed the joke at the beginning of part one and that the opening cut scene was very clearly a TV interview. But that would be redundant, wouldn’t it?
Fans: Spyro 1 has "no" story! The Legend of Spyro tries to incorporate story, drama, STUFF! Fans: The Legend of Spyro has TOO MUCH STORY! Yup! Happened with Sonic fans too! They were complaining that "Sonic takes himself too seriously! He shouldn't talk! Sonic's stupid friends!" And now, after a decade of Pontac and Graff's braindead writing, fans are begging Sega to have a story that will keep you awake, instead of jokes that put kindergarteners to sleep.
It's not a great game, it's almost a perfect triology. It has few cons specially in the level design of the first one, but the second and specially the third one... One of the best games in PlayStation One and my favorite games of all times.
I was cringing every time Tyranno said G-nasty G-norc. The g is silent, and the only character to say it as G-nasty G-norc was the interviewer (Bob) on the first cut scene. Everyone else called him Gnasty Gnorc with silent g. Only one character said it with the guh sound at the beginning. Check every dragon and cut scene, and you will see that only Bob pronounced it G-nasty G-norc.
Personally, my favorite is Spyro 2 because you get the best reward in the game, the superflame. While I didn't hate Spyro 3, I did feel like it's overwhelmed with boring minigames, and too many side characters whom while entertaining, their not as fun to play as then Spyro. And the final battle just feels rushed and lazy. The idea of a dragon, with fire breath and everything have to rely on vehicles, which are man made devices to fight the Sorceress just doesn't make any sense, and it's ugly. Super bonus round ain't even all that special either, more boring minigames and once again, a boss fight with Sorceress relying on a stupid UFO, again. It's like the developers forgot this was even a Spyro game. Instead of making a game where Spyro put all his skills to test to fight the Sorceress, we get a game with so many other characters that overstated their welcome and take all the attention off the purple dragon, the main reason I even played the game in the first place. The idea of adding new characters to the plot wasn't bad, but you could've done it better without downgrading the main protagonist. Besides, who wants to play as a character other then a purple dragon. People can say what what they want about Gnasty Gnoric, but even he was a better boss fight then the sorceress with Ripto being the best.
I think everything is subjective to what you played first. Since you played Spyro 2 first you like that the most. Since I played the first one first I like that one more. I do not like how in the second one you have to back track so much. It is so dumb, I want to be able to finish a level on my first walkthrough.
Spyro pronounced Gnasty's name correctly. Ffs you literally have footage in this video of the adult dragon being "interviewed" pronouncing the name correctly, the "g-nasty" pronunciation was clearly a joke.
You can't see a camera because the camera IS the camera. The camera is the cameraman. And you can assume Gnasty is watching TV, but it's not in view.
If only others would use their brain like you did.
I never had a problem with this until I started watching deep dives and stuff as an adult. I don't get how it's confusing 😂
Yeah I stopped watching after this take lol 😂
Yeah, i turned the video off after this. The guy who made this video is clearly braindead LOL
1. the dragon in the beginning of 1 is clearly being interviewed on TV hence the boom mic 2. he mispronounces gnasty's name. you missed the joke. 3. gnasty is obviously watching it on TV but you're right that it'd be a nice touch if you saw the TV somewhere when you get to his lair at the end
Yeah, I like this video but was definitely disappointed that he missed the joke with Gnasty's name and continued to pronounce it wrong.
Thankfully they actually showed that Gnasty is seeing this on TV in Reignited. Admittedly in the original it makes no sense why he hears them.

Awesome video. I have such fond memories of these games, and I really like the remake.

Fair enough. I love 1 & 2 and just like 3. I grew up on the first 2, but found out about 3, years after release.
Ok so you don’t pronounce the Gs in Gnasty Gnorc... same as you don’t pronounce a G when saying Gnorc. The joke is the interviewer getting his name wrong and the dragon then corrects them by saying it correctly. They definitely confused a lot of people with this one though.
The seamless level transitions were probably cut because the development team was forced to make these games under crunch
"Being relevant means me getting views"
Me two years after upload: I'm about to pull a sneaky on ya
Edit: good video.
You do realise it's not pronounced g-nasty g-norc right? It's important to me that you realise this
Trouble with the trolley has plagued me since I was a kindergartner.
hi, i really enjoyed the video. great job. i wanted to say that i think for a game that could be the first video game ever having an easy first boss is good. i have seen many people really struggle with the boss in toasty and feel so good when they finally accomplish it.
So when are you going to talk about the other spyro game after the trilogy.
I could be the hundredth person to call out that you missed the joke at the beginning of part one and that the opening cut scene was very clearly a TV interview. But that would be redundant, wouldn’t it?
Why did you use Legend of Spyro music at the end? I like that particular piece of music, but it feels out-of-place.
Ripto's Rage - his was my favorite game ever, aside from the Harry Potter games ❤️❤️
OK! I get it already.
Great video and retrospective.
For the Spyro 1 bosses, I believe they are so easy on purpose; they are meant to be push-overs and hilariously bad.
I'm late so whatever but... It's pronounced Nasty Norc... The G's are silent, the dragon's personalities were being showcased...
Drove me crazy...
that's...that's the joke...
@@Tyranno Its a terrible "joke"....
Haha I was looking for someone to say this xD
You sound kinda like MatPat
imo this is one of the better looking games on the ps1
Fans: Spyro 1 has "no" story!
The Legend of Spyro tries to incorporate story, drama, STUFF!
Fans: The Legend of Spyro has TOO MUCH STORY!
Yup! Happened with Sonic fans too! They were complaining that "Sonic takes himself too seriously! He shouldn't talk! Sonic's stupid friends!" And now, after a decade of Pontac and Graff's braindead writing, fans are begging Sega to have a story that will keep you awake, instead of jokes that put kindergarteners to sleep.
A retrospective on my number 1 game trilogy and number 1 game, fuck yeah, this and Mass Effect
This guy is really going all 🤓☝ on the first game like 8 year old me didn't complete it with no problem.
welcome to my recommended, gonna leave a comment and subscribe to give you that small boost you deserve
It's not a great game, it's almost a perfect triology. It has few cons specially in the level design of the first one, but the second and specially the third one... One of the best games in PlayStation One and my favorite games of all times.
Not a huge deal but it’s “Stone Hill” not plural. Thx for the vid
Gnasty is pronounced like gnarly
Oof. This feels like one of those algorithm videos but the metrics just not there... hope that turns around :(
I was cringing every time Tyranno said G-nasty G-norc.
People can say what what they want about Gnasty Gnoric, but even he was a better boss fight then the sorceress with Ripto being the best.
...but you can aim the grenades you sont have to just aimlessly toss them
I think everything is subjective to what you played first.
I didn’t make the connection between breeze harbour and zephyr until literally just now 🤯
Sure buddy
I thought nasty norc was a decent boss.. especially considering the others.. haha
11:00 (I'll come back to this later
About Cliff Town gems... Dude, I dunno, that was too darn funny for you to stumble over such an ez gem placement.
Wrong aspect ratio dipshut
The answer to half of you questions is "Because the game was made for 5 year old's"
Nowadays, playing the first Spyro is like playing a beta of the series.
Lmao dude got filtered by Spyro
I enjoyed feeding the leopard
