Great Discussion. I think we should not try to combine Buddhism and Science together.. Let's try to learn both separately then we can get a better idea about our whole universe unique to each other... Don't insult these people . At least they are trying to figure out what universe is.....
I wish to play "Devil's Advocate" here and ask some simple questions. How can we, Sri Lankan's be "proud" of Dr. SG working or NASA, when everything in NASA is a product of their own Western Civilization??? Maybe Dr. SG can be happy on a "personal level" that he is working for the world's "Best" space organization, but the problem is, everything there is European and nothing do with our history, culture, way of thinking or civilization. According to our civilization which is nourished by Buddhism, space travel or exploration is a waste of time and money. Goal of a Buddhist civilization is attainment of enlightenment, nothing else. Neil Armstrong said before he put his foot on the moon that "it was a giant step for mankind". But has it being a giant step??? Is the world a better or worse place than 1969??? Although there have been improvements in peoples living standards, overall the world is in a much worse state than it was in 1969. The environment is in a state of destruction and inequality is much worse than it was in 1969. More than that there are 100s of more wars in the world than it was in 1969. So, it is obvious this so-called "technology" is not improved the world as a whole. My point is that, these space explorations are outward manifestations of European thinking pattern, which is the complete opposite of how we think. White people think that the "truth" is out there and you have to explore the "universe" to find it. Eastern philosophies, says the complete opposite and state that the the truth is in fact inside every person, and can be realized through meditation and religious methods. So, as you can see, it is technically not possible for Dr. SG to work in NASA, assuming he is a Buddhist. He might have to work due to necessity (i.e. we all need a paycheck at the end of the month), but I don't see how you can make a big deal out of it, if you are a practicing believing Buddhist i.e.. PS: I really don't mean any insult to Dr. SG here. I really don't. But these questions are valid I think.
Dr Sarath Gunapala would have given more time to talk. It was a waste of time that a Buddhist priest was invited to the program. He knows nothing about this subject. Next time don't invite irrelevant people. Anyway Dr Sarath Gunapala added value to the program. General Dr Boniface perera PhD
He works at JPL. Not NASA. JPL is funded by NASA but its part of California Institute of Technology not part of NASA. He should mention this without boasting that he works at NASA.
