  • The traditional Macedonian song "Karanfilce Devojce" performed by the newfound Norwegian choir Artemis on their spring concert "Reincarnation", april 2023.
Karanfilce Devojce («Carnation girl») is a well-known folk song from Macedonia. It is often sung on festive occasions such as weddings and holidays. The song has a catchy melody and an up-beat tempo that is often sung by a group of people. Additionally, it is very common to dance to the song.
The word "karanfilce" comes from the Turkish-Ottoman word "قرنفل‎ (karanfil)," which in turn originates from the Arabic word «قَرَنْفُل‎ (qaranful)».
The lyrics tell the story of a young woman/girl who carries the scent of carnations, despite not having any flowers with her. Carnations are a type of flower known for their beautiful colors and long lifespan. They are often used to decorate homes and gardens in Mediterranean countries, and the plant is also used to flavor various dishes and desserts.
Karanfilce Devojce is an important part of Macedonian cultural heritage and has been sung for many generations.
The arrangement is based on the version by the wonderful Polish singing group Laboratorium Piesni.
    Soloist: Marita Ellingsen
    Arrangement: Daniel Bahram
