I built a very similar top barrel for my workshop wood heater. Only I near filled the top barrel with pipe, leaving 1 inch spacing between pipes. Enclosed the back side with a 4 inch hole for the input pipe from a medium size fan, to feed air into the barrel heat exchanger from the back side and hot air out the front. I found that I needed 15' of chimney above the top barrel to pull a draft, and the unit is amazing at how it heats my entire 1400 sq/ft workshop in the dead of winter. Outside it can be -35c, and in the workshop I'm in a T-shirt. The air flow means no cold spots, and even heat from floor to ceiling.

I have done this but had used more and larger tubes. With only 6 tubes I would have placed then on the upper half of the drum as that is the hottest part of the chamber and would be the most efficient use of your energy. I recommend putting the top outlet on the opposite end of the drum from the inlet, and for internal turbulence have the outlet side slightly lower than the inlet. Note - you must have the chamber completely sealed to do it this way or you will have exhaust gas seeping into your living/working area. Good job Cody, thanks for sharing!

@5:45 just to clarify, when you add the fan you go from free convection to forced convection. Conduction would be if you made physical contact with the barrels themselves to transfer heat. Whether forced or free, convection is basically just the conduction of heat from the metal drum to the surrounding fluid (air) then from that fluid to you. Please note, this is all based off of my memory of my heat transfer classes and may not be word for word definitions.

Neat thing about hexagons, there are 6 equilateral triangles in one and all of the sides of these equilateral triangles is equal to the radius of the circle that they are located in. So once you draw your circle, take the radius of that circle and start walking it around the circle and you'll end up with a perfect hexagon.

  • @weaponeer

@Wranglerstar - I always tell people that when cutting the holes for the pipes,, to cut the front normally, but the backside the pipes should be cut so the holes are 2+ inches lower. and the pipes in the back extend out a couple inches farther than the ones in the front. Purpose: the holes in the back are intakes, so when the stove is lite the pipes are heated and since heat rises it automatically draws air from the back the air is then superheated and blown out the front. it's far more effective than the simple straight pipe.

I like it man. As an Hvac guy I’m thinking you could extend them on one side and bring them all together to larger box and put a small blower to push air through the tubes and it could even supply other rooms in someone’s shop. Like the office and bathroom

The best way to gauge if you have correct amperage and wire speed is your welder should sound like bacon frying in a pan. It should be a consistent crackling. Love the welding videos. Awesome work!

You can tell from the sound of the weld if its going good. and from the sound of the weld you was doing it was a bit off from a good weld.

I built our upper barrel with a single 8" ID pipe through the middle and push air through it with a all-metal 8" duct fan.
When its real cold I slide my 8" auger attachment into the pipe to slow, circulate and capture more heat.

Dresdon Acacin The really cool thing with a bullet style welder is that it's 3ph and has a,100%duty cylcle , as far as welding goes there is absolutely no comparison to a 3ph welder .I actually have a friend that has his dialed down to a particular brand of rod for his stick welder .If memory serves me correctly only the Big 40 is 3ph .
