I haven't watched in a while, but my complaint isn't that the projects take too long. It's that the titles are all clickbatey and the project videos stopped being numbered in order which makes them hard to follow along.

One video will finish, then start playing another one that I only assume is the next one but has none of the content I was expecting to see, come to find out it's playing one two years old. If I have to select the videos based off of upload date, what's the point of even having titles?

Having worked in a farm huge metal building repair shop many years ago, these are great during the rainy, snowy, winter days. The older mechanics made a removeable metal griddle that sat on top of the lower drum so that breaktimes you could heat up or toast some bread, fry some sausages, even a few eggs, bacon, etc for the crew. There's not a lot of space between the drums, but it just occurred to me that I bet there's a way to make great coffee with one of those double chamber Italian coffeemakers, just extend the griddle out a bit somehow for it to sit on and conduct the heat. When the power goes out in the winter (which often happened), you'd be set. Also, they had a suspended metal frame above the stove where you could spread out and warm up damp work gloves. In our modern world where so much is manufactured, the handmade solutions often bring back the best memories.
My uncle had a couple of these when I was younger. One in his mechanic's shop for work and one in his garage at home. They weren't all fancy with the flanges, he just cut and welded some pipe between them to hold the upper chamber and act as a means to transfer the heat, and he filled the upper chamber with scrap steel so it would collect and radiate the heat even after the fire went out.

You installed the flanges between your barrels backwards. You always want the inner pipe pointing up you don't want to exposed crimped pipe pointing down in the direction of the flame. Leaks in the proper position will only add extra combustion air whereas if they're in the wrong direction they'll leak carbon monoxide
This is what fireplace sealant is for.

Cool stove. Great video. I’m an HVAC tech and the only illegal thing I see is the way the venting connects, you did it upside down. Crimps of stove pipe, or any venting, need to be in the direction of air flow to eliminate flue spillage. So crimps should be going upwards or smoke or CO will leak out.

Crimps go down so that creosote condensate runs back to the firebox, and not drip down the pipe causing a fire hazard
Wrong, on woodstove applications (only) you always run the male opposite the flow, this keeps creosote and condensation from running out of the joint onto the exterior of the pipe. And flue installations the pipe is the opposite of HVAC since it is under vaccuum not pressure. Under pressure like (HVAC) the flow works best male with flow. On a woodstove you are asking for a creosote fire on the outside of the pipe.

So do your thing and keep the details in there. The trial and error is authentic. The why and whats are important. Thank you for this.
I think on the last episode I commented: "tease". I didn't mean that projects can't be split up. I actually like long projects, it gives me something to look forward to in the next episode!
I was just expecting part 1 / 3 in the summary or title, but I understand how it goes, sometimes you finish it up quickly, next time something happens and it takes a few days (or episodes).

This stove is in no way illegal. It's simply not good enough to pass inspection in a dwelling. It's perfectly OK to install in a workshop, as long as you don't need to keep an insurance company happy. Good construction video!

I remember these in houses back in the day; they could warm up a draughty uninsulated space in no time and keep it that way (though they wouldn't hold a fire overnight). I guess the single-wall rolled steel isn't as fire-safe as heavy cast iron; is that why they banned them from living spaces? But if a stove is supposed to make efficient use of fuel and pump out the heat, this is a good stove.
I looked it up and it is illegal in a home in the US but not because its too good. . It was banned along with most woodburning stoves to to emission and pollution concerns in 2017. Has nothing to do with this stoves heat efficiency but because it's smoke would still be raw woodsmoke and well above the 20% requirement for modern wood burning stoves.

My dad used to make these for all the ranchers in my rural part of NM. He was a welding instructor at the college and would teach ranchers to weld and do projects from horse trailers, coat racks with barn wood and horse shoes. and of course these wood heaters for the shops or barns. Crazy how well these would work. Thanks for sharing.

I have a dad i see but he never taught me anything of significance like how to build, maintain anything or make money, i had to figure it out. he cooks food for me but makes a big deal out of it, i cook better for myself.. he might as well have been deadbeat id be happy to not see him again, mom was ok and a bit more tolerable not much better, i was dealt a very basic hand when it came to parents, my dad makes money on stockmarket but will not share his knowledge with me

Saw a double barrel stove in Northern Idaho where a guy had cut out the ends of the top barrel, then he put the ring around the inner barrel welded in a 30 gal barrel with no ends in it, and placed a fan in the back to heat a very large shop. I think it was his own design. I saw it 35 or 40 years ago in St. Maries, Idaho.
My buddy did at least similar to what you're describing... the top barrel was essentially an internally hollow huge metal pipe (for the hot gasses to flow through), with capped ends, and a wide open hole through the middle of it that a box fan could blow through
Years ago my uncle built one of these double barrel stoves. It was super efficient and burned smoke free. If the fire was to big, the top barrel would could glow straw red. But this stove could heat a triple stall garage so effectively, that even when it was -20 outside we could open the main door and still be warm.
Any idea on how to build one of these you mention?

It may not be "illegal" to make and use on of these barrel wood stoves, but if it fails and burns down your house or garage, then the insurance company will not pay for damages. I have seen these in people's garages and they work pretty good to heat the place up in the colder months. The problem is that heat generated, melts the bottoms out. They have to be lined with stove bricks. I would like to see a wood stove made out of a 275 gallon oil tank. I made a burner barrel for my dad which took 3 years to burned out, but it was used outside and was getting rained on. Cool video through. Thanks.
Yeah my dad made one out of an oil tank just like you're saying, except that he uses it for burning garbage and small brush outside so he doesn't have to get a permit. He just slams the door shut. It's a bit of a monstrosity. As for melting the bottoms out, we always let so much ash accumulate in the bottoms of our single barrel stove that it was plenty insulating. I think the stove outlasted the garage.
My dad's a stone Mason. So of course, he lined the bottom of his with cement. Hey, it works.

My insurance company wouldn't even give me insurance on the structure over this stove. I bought the place in October and it's inaccessible in winter so I didn't have time to change it so I figured I could at least get insurance on it and obviously if the stove caused a loss I wouldn't be covered but they denied me any coverage
What is it with people wanting to change the way a creator runs his or her channel? I have seen so much of that lately... The way I see it is it is your channel to be ran the way you see fit and works for you. It is your channel and the way I see it, you should just do you...end of story. I enjoy watching your channel and the flow of which you show your work. If I wanted something different, I would go watch something different. You got your channel to where it is by doing the things you thought best and have a ton of watchers that like it that way....don't let the few people that want you to change make you feel like you have to.... there is way too much of that in our society already and have really made a mess of things. I agree..if someone doesn’t like your method of making a video, please don’t complain…no one is forcing you to watch. It’s just one guy and he does a great job, please show some gratitude for everything he is teaching you. Filming while actually making these things is not as easy as he makes it look. In fact, it’s very hard. This is a very talented, good man. If he didn’t take the time to be detailed, he would get complaints about that.
I’m a older woman and I’ll probably never make anything he’s making, but I appreciate his dedication, skill, and mannerly disposition. He’s teaching you all for free!

Nicely done! I’ve made a few of these myself over the years. I would recommend that you turn the top barrel around in order to offset the stack so you get more of the heat in the heat exchanger.
I remember helping a friend make one of those back in 1973. They catch a lot of heat that would otherwise go up the chimney.

I had that same design stove in my garage 25 years ago. I had 5 - 4" tubes through the top barrel with a box fan behind it to push air through the tubes. I also lined the bottom of the bottom barrel with fire bricks. Best wood stove I ever had.
dont even worry about ppl being impatient. most of ur viewers understand that u have tons of other things to do, and enjoy ur content at the pace u are able to put it out. it would serve noone (other than the minority of ur viewers that are the vocal majority sometimes) if u would rush things and then u get injured or have to redo things for whatever errors sneak in due to stress. if ppl cant wait, they can find other creators whos main focus is YouTubing, but again i think thats a very small minority here anyways. me personaly, i have learned so many usefull small tips and tricks here since i came accross ur channel. and knowing its a hobby of urs and not ur "job" makes it more enjoyable for some reason (even tho i cant lay my finger on it exactly, it just is) so pls just keep sharing with us at ur own pace, and know that most ppl here are perfectly content with it the way it is ^^ best wishes for u and ur family, stay well ^^
I stumbled across this video from youtube suggested videos. The way I've lived it, projects are projects, THEY take time, Do what you do. And I subscribed just because of the ending comment about it taking more than just on day to get something done

Nope, to put the flanges on the same side defeats the whole purpose of the upper barrel. It's the same principle as with Finnish masonry heaters. You
want the hot gases to travel a maximum distance before they are released, so they have more time and area to give off their heat.
He says around 8:40 that is mounted differently because of where is going. I know little about thermal dynamics, I'll try to research the "why"
He could put a partition wall, similar to older mufflers, inside the barrel (if he opened it and welded it close again), making the exhaust flow back and forth through the second barrel.
Why...you could just put a double elbow ...inside the 2nd barrel, thereby doubling the area of heat distribution...You gotta think out of the box LOL

A come-along, chain and a D-ring hitch if you have a receiver hitch. Don't just hook to a ball
He's done several of those. Go back and watch some of his older videos, there's lots of good ones. Harbor Freight have some decent winches for cheap. As well as rigging gear. Straps and come-alongs etc.

I haven't seen these heaters since traveling through British Colombia and the Yukon in the early 1970s. I suppose they're still in use there, because they're the most effective heaters I've ever seen. When the temperature outdoors was around 40 below, one of these would heat a very large, high-ceilnged room to the point of being too warm for comfort. Make no mistake: if you want real heat, get one of these. They work!

Your stove reminds me of the shop stoves we would build when we were young. we didn't have any of the fancy cast flanges ,etc you have for your build, we made that up out of scrap steel and pipe we'd get from the junkyard for cheap. that could fit standard store bought stove pipe.our fire box having 2~4 inches of beach sand with old masonry brick on top to build our fires upon & its cold here in winter in Canada, wood pallets at the Industrial Park were free fire wood & it kept our garages warm where we could work on our vehicles . They were ugly but they worked great to heat a garage up. often you had 1 side of you cooking, the side away from the stove was chilled ~;)
Best we could do as Students with part time jobs, and 2nd hand beaters, dirt bikes and a couple old snow machines to work on.

when using tin snips to cut a line dont fully close the scissors when snipping this will give you much better lines

Wood burning stoves are illegal in your house in most states now so hes kind of telling the truth but you can still go to rural king or amazon and get this kit for around $100
that's the only reason i was interested in the vid. thanks for saving me the time. the guy knows some stuff, but vids are soo long and often shilling products, so i hardly watch anymore

I believe they are banned, in that they have no epa rating. Also, try explaining to your home owners insurance that you have a diy wood stove that you built by watching youtube in your house and see how fast they drop you.

When using your square to scribe try using the notches on the inside of the square. They should go up in 1/4inch increments and it's used for scribing

He does a lot of silly stuff like that. More of a get it done type of guy than a thinker. Lacks critical thinking skills and the drive to start over and correct errors before posting. Sweet guy with a ton of knowledge to share. Just watch the details and check your facts.
Actually the pipes are supposed to be joined that way so any cresote will run back down inside , not out the joints and down the outside of the pipe .

Spend the extra couple hundred for stainless food grade barrels, they won't rot out like the standard steel. We got ours from a barrel recycler, but most large restraunts and bakeries have them.
They eventually decuarberize and eventually start rusting as well.
Your workflow and release schedule is spot-on. Appreciate the regular uploads and your hard work.

the flanges between the barrels are backwards - they are directional and have the potential to leak that way - male should have been on the bottom and female on top barrel
When dealing with wood and Solid fuel it is backwoods on purpose or soot falls down the outside of the pipe.
@Mark Makes carbon monoxide coming into the room would be my biggest concern.

@@gazinta - It's all venting into the room via the holes in the ends of the upper drum. There's no chimney through the ceiling. Why are Americans so obsessed with dying from carbon monoxide poisoning? Buy a microwave oven and live another 30 years.

Barrels never last very long. Use 20"+ oil pipe. It's around 1/3" thick instead of the thin gauge barrel. Costs about $20 per foot around here. Some 1/4" plate for the front and back, it's a stove that lasts a lifetime
Could also use a Water Heater Tank as they are also quite thick!!!
I had the same heater in my shop. It was put in in the late '70s. I think around 76 or 77 by my father in law. And I inherited the place in 1991and I used it until we moved in 2006. The only problem I had with it was birds would fly down the stove pipe until I put a screen over it. And I sold the place to a friend of mine who is still using it now. My father in law put a rebar grate in it to keep the fire off the bottom. The drums have never been replaced. I don't know why he would say that it is illegal. It may be in his state. I have put a smaller one in my shop just last year. Just one drum on this one.

As a long time subscriber, I personally like the multi-episode projects. It feels more personal and more like real life.
I like step-by-step videos. For those wanting a start to finish, it's not too hard to add videos to set playlists as they are uploaded. Also, if you feel up to it, you could take all of the video you have and edit it into a compilation video at the end of a piece. Take your time with them, and I'm sure they'll be appreciated. Either and both options are nice ways to gauge how long a project takes.

The reason you are struggling with your sheet metal cutting: Yellow handled tin snips are for putting small nips in the edge of sheet metal... Not for cutting from the start to the finish of a complete cut in sheet metal. Green and Red handled snips are both used to cut straight line cuts from start to finish in sheet metal ... The difference between Red and Green handled snips is which way they curl the sheet metal; up to the right or up to the left; as the cut progresses from start to finish in sheet metal. Hope this helps.
All three of my cutters handle are black.

But i was just gonna say, i have been watching you for well....since i can remember you being on. And while i havent seen every video. I dont think i could happier with what you have taught me and and the energy you put out.
You can run the modern version of this on any woodstove. It is just a square box that goes above your flue collar with through piping for heat exchange via fan. They work great. "Heat reclaimer"

It is one woodstove with the heat of two! Normally, too much heat goes up the chimney!
I’m guessing more surface area for heat to radiate from.
@@fauchejuliano no, it doesn't have the heat of two, it just holds a little more heat. The 20 foot chimney will actually get rid of most of the heat in that place. It still doesn't not have any type of gas reburner and will use twice if not three times as much wood as a newer one.
I know right? Not impressed with this at all...maybe because I've been a welder/fabricator for going on 30 years, I'm sure I could whip up something way better than this just using material out of the scrap bin at work...but whatever, dif strokes for dif folks...

When I was a kid, we had one of these in our basement and man, did it put out heat! They really work.
Reminds me of the Sotz era, long ago. I didn't build a barrel stove, but I still have a bright orange Monster Maul.
Put a baffle down the middle to direct the hot air too the front then back to the rear to the exhaust, still heating all the pipes and may add efficiency.

90% of a paint job is the prior prep, as the paint will only enhance any flaws. I believe that this is why you can't spell paint without pain.

I remember those. And they busted out the BTUs. My grandfather also had a similar stove in the basement he made from an old hot water heater. With a good fire in that, and the upstairs stove lit as well, it kept the whole house warm in the winter. Thanks for the very complete video!

Pretty cool. One change I might suggest is to reverse how the center connecting pipe was installed. Make it go on the outside of the bottom port and the inside of the top.

Nope guys, he has it right, the female is always on the bottom with flue pipes, this is so that any falling particles or condensation runs back into the stove rather than out of the joint.
@@garychadfield552 I was thinking the same thing, because in the plumbing and HVAC world it’s always male end up. Just learned something! Didn’t think about creosote, particles, and condensation coming through.

We are watching a moment in your daily lives and should be happy to accept that, were not watching a reality TV show with a full crew, tons of cameras , directors and a full editing suite, a guy, his wife and son on a Homestead ( Small Farm?), I'm happy with what you produce, its interesting to see from where I am in Spain and have no hangups about what you do, as i said its a moment in time. Its like taking photographs they tell a story of a moment in time, nothing more nothing less.
There's actually a groove on your square for making markings at several different measurements, of which 3 inches is one of them. It's just inside the square, those little notches.

I have worked at a prototype machine shop since 1984. This isn’t something that you can bust out fast. When I did mine a decade ago it took me at least ten hours. This guy is being precise and lets not forget there’s a fire going to be lit in there. Who wants an exhaust smoke leak?
Here in Finland, wood burning stoves were practically compulsory in every house since the beginning of the cold war until very recently. To get a planning permission, you had to file a statement under heading "Winter heat source during periods of inavailability of imported fuels" meaning situations where electricity, gas or oil is not available. That was in effect until year 2012, if I remember correctly, and thus almost every house has some kind of a fireplace.
If people don't like how doing things, they can move along and find another, why do people always got to make some comment about how THEY want to see things go, how about you make your own channel and do how you want.
