It's refreshing to see our young people appreciating what came before them as we did. I was a kid in the 80's. It was a lit time. The showtime Lakers were my team The Lakers went to the finals 9 times. Magic won 5 rings. He was spectacular.

You have to watch a courtship of rivals. That's the story or magic and Bird. Now you know why Bird and Magic saved the NBA. Watching these guys and their teams play was amazing. They were both team players. Both bird and Magic got rebounds and assists on the regular. Bird had Magic on scoring because he could score anywhere on the floor. We loved watching those guys play.Bird was injured his back and Magic aids. Watch more Magic and Birds game you won't be disappointed.

I like the convo about lost elements of the game it's cool to see young cats really thinking philosophically about the past and present hoops.. salute. Magic was really like that. He was ALWAYS pushing the pace. People talk about Dantoni and others creating the fast offences but Magic was really running blitz offense. And he was tall and could finish so you had to guard him too

Magic and Larry Legend saved the NBA back in the 1980's...Celtics vs. Lakers for the championship was epic.

My most memorable moment was trying to convince a dude in my squadron that Bird didn't walk on water and one man couldn't beat five (Magic and Michigan State vs Bird and Indiana State for the NCAA Championship). He insisted that Bird was going to win and bet me $50. I almost felt bad for him when he paid me my winnings because he was so disappointed. That was the start of the Bird/Magic rivalry, which brought basketball to massive popularity. Magic and Bird were two of the greatest of all time, which is why during the 1980s Magic and the Lakers won five NBA Championships and Bird and the Celtic won three. Neither team could have done it without them.

Noooooo Magic was the best point guard all time ... Legends roamed the NBA Courts in the 80's. ... Every game with Magic was a highlight reel. ... THE 80's Laker & Celtic teams would DESTROY today's teams.

He did come back out very briefly, but HIV being new and not truly understood on how contracted some players were ignorant to how it spreads. So it led to the second retirement.

Lakers games in the 80s were always entertaining. Magic pulled some crazy shit every single game. The Lakers went to the Finals nine times (and won the chip five times) during his tenure, and they never finished a season with fewer than fifty wins (often in the 60w category).

The term “ slam dunk“ Did not exist before Laker announcer Chick Hearn started using it.
As basketball became more fancy, he had to come up with words to use.
    ( chickisms- look it up)
His influence on the entire sport of basketball, on every level, globally
Is on display every day, when someone talks about basketball

I can tell you for a fact that ball players aren't any more athletic today than they were 40 years ago, the biggest difference back then is that skill was more important than being athletic.
But with that said guys were still capable of jumping out the gym, and they were able to do it with crappy foot gear.
But probably the biggest asset that players in the past had over players today, is that they all knew their lane, and that simply made for more cohesive basketball team.
Hierarchy was fully understood, and players prioritized winning over their own personal achievements.

You got to check out Deon Sanders, and Bo Jackson playing on two different teams. I think that's what MJ tried to do.

The players today aren't more athletic.
It's the rule changes. Notice how the
lane was so crowded back in the day.
Not to mention, hand checking ,
and way way more physical. Today,
    there's little defense, everything is
wide open the players have freedom.
    I'm not a hater, I've ben watching
the NBA since 1984. The only
    killer today is Steph Curry,
and once in awhile KD. Lebron
    way overrated, trust me.

@HBKSHOW1 hey react to some 90's players: mamoud abdul rauf, nick van exel, tim hardaway, shawn kemp, rod strickland to name a few. Also Dominique wilkins and charles barkley were beasting back in their day.

80s and 90s and early 2000s were the greatest years no knock off to earlier but this era of basketball is weak…if they could bring back hand checking, defense would be great cause it lacks nowadays…it’s all offenses grew up in the 90s and watched MJ play his last years in Chicago…wished I watched Bird and Magic play

    @𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐇𝐁𝐊𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐖
Magic's unquestionably the BEST pt guard ever.
Your generation keeps trying to put Curry in the discussion, but it's not even close. In terms of embodying what a REAL pt guard is, it's Magic, Isiah, J-Kidd and Stockton. Yes, Curry's probably the greatest shooter we've ever seen, but if his shot's not falling, what other ways can or will he impact the game?
    Answer: he can't and won't.
And therein lies the difference between himself and a guy like Magic and J-Kidd. With them being big guards at 6'9 and 6'4, respectively, Magic and Kidd used to post up smaller guards (and in Magic's case, PF's as well) to cause mismatches and could/would also go down low and rebound with the Bigs.
Both could dominate and control a game while scoring minimum points, even though they could EASILY go out and score 20+ pts a night, if they chose to do so. Their size added a dimension to their games that Curry could only dream about having.
Curry can ONLY affect the game when (or if) he's shooting well and that's it.
