The Magic vs Bird rivalry began in college. Magic and Michigan State played against Bird and Indiana State for the NCAA Championship. Magic and Michigan State won the game and the championship. The next year both turned pro, Magic going to the Lakers and Bird to the Celtics, two teams that were already longtime rivals. Consider that before Magic and Bird turned pro, the NBA had sunk so low that playoff games were shown on tape delay after the 11:00pm news. The Magic vs Bird rivalry was a key reason the NBA returned to prime time.
IT WAS MAGIC & LARRY THAT SAVED THE NBA, AND IS THE REASON WHYYYYYY THE PLAYERS MAKE WHAT THEY MAKE NOW HB! 💯😊MAGIC WAS THE 1ST POSITIONLESS PLAYER, HE HAD THE 1ST BIG CONTRACT WHICH WAS ( 25 YEAR 25 MILLION ) FROM DR. BUSS 👍
He was forced to retire by David Stern the commissioner! HIV was a new disease that was barely known about! After 4 years and much more was researched! When he contracted HIV, the medical community didn’t even know how it was contracted or passed!
The sky hook was mastered by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Others used the hook shot before Kareem, but after the NCAA banned dunking the basketball after Kareem's freshman year (another player for whom the NCAA changed the rules to contain - the first being Wilt Chamberlain), Kareem and his college coach John Wooden, worked extensively on perfecting the shot. Making adjustments to prevent anyone from stripping the ball from behind, and making it nearly impossible to block without goaltending (Wilt Chamberlain is the only player I've actually seen film of blocking Kareem's Sky hook). I say all that to setup up Magic learning to do a similar hook shot after joining the Lakers and playing with Kareem. The media dubbed it the "baby sky hook." By the 1990's, the hook shot fell out of fashion as the next generation of centers started developing better post moves and footwork and expanded their shooting repertoire. In grade school I played center, and anyone who played the position in the 1970's and 80's learned to shoot the hook shot with either hand in either direction. But it wasn't an easy shot to master, as it required a high arc and extremely good touch to be effective, and most players failed to understand that. You had to be able to aim it almost like a long-range jump shot..... either going for all net, or being able to place it perfectly off of the backboard, in an instant decision. Thus, as time went on, and Kareem retired, the shot fell out of favor, and for a short time was mutated into the "half-hook" that Shaquille O'Neal used to shoot. You rarely see it anymore at any level.
Magic's bounce passes off the dribble were sick as Exorcist pea soup vomit. His bionic vision was deadly as Dr. Kevorkian incisions. He's the reason I fell in love with the sport in 1980. We'll never see another one like him. 6'9 thoroughbred that dropped dimes like Frank Lucas snitches.
I heard GG ask why did they call him "Magic". I think I can help with that question. The nickname Magic was given to him by a sportswriter by the name of Fred Stabley, jr all the way back to when he was in high school. It was right after a game in which he had 36- point, 18-rebounds, and a 16-assist performance for Everett High School. Which this led the team to a state championship in 1977. One of funniest things that I heard about Magic was the story about when he was invited to dinner to Larry Bird's house. When he was there, Larry's mom said to Larry: "Did you tell'em?". To which Larry replied: "No, I'll let you tell'em". Then Larry's mom told Magic that he was her favorite basketball player. Now, that's funny. lol
"Imagine if he kept going?" Magic's last full season, he finished as runner up for the MVP to Michael Jordan, went to the NBA Finals, and was at least 90% as good as he had ever been.
When they say they just ran knowing Magic would get them the ball….(living in LA at that time) it was reported that in practice, if you weren’t looking and ready for a pass , Magic would hit you in the head with a bullet pass! That’s why his teammates were always ready for the pass even when it seemed improbable that they would get one!!!
Isiah was that guy too. He was #2 PG all time until Steph just passed him couple years ago. Zeke beat Jordan, Bird and Magic in one postseason... Then repeated! 🏆🏆
@@OrondeBranch Yes, Zeke avg 9.5 ast to Steph's 6.5 ast, but playsoff the ball more than the usual or not, at the end of the day, you ARE the position you DEFEND. Steph is the PG/ Harden is a SG/ Bron is a SF. Isiah is my hometown hero but I cant make an argument for him against Steph's accolades - 2x MVP, 2x Scoring Champ, and 4 rings, is better than Isiah's 0 MVPs, and 2.5 rings (cheated by refs out of a 3-peat).

Your girl funny she said “she pictured magic with a rounder face” that’s because now a days the shape of his face structure and head is in the shape of a circle lol. Now since he’s bald it looks different and I always thought that
Old Celtics fan here, took me awhile to watch this😅I hated Magic, especially when he grew that dam goatee, because my Celtics fast break was good, our big men filled the lanes better than everyone but Showtime😢Celtics weren't slow but against LA and that giant point guard we were mortal😅
Yeah this is the real MJ my 🐐 won a chip in college and then won a NBA chip rookie year love Lbj but not him jordan bird noboby but him did that i guess it was the hiv thing why his name not mention with jordan or bron but 5 NBA chips and 1 college 🐐 and started a wave mf still talking about ...Showtime

Magic is hands down the PG GOAT and second place isn’t even close.

They saved it but mj grew it.
He was not forced to retire. He chose to and then came back 4 years later.

Thank you for this comment! That is why Kareem Abdul Jabbar (Lew Alcindor) is the true GOAT!!! Nobody else’s resume even comes close!!!

Steph passed WHO?! Nahhh. Steph is a SG that plays point. Can’t pass Zeke and you NEVER averaged 9ast/gm and your PF really runs the offense.
