I will leave here my experience with my Dasung 253 color revo (without frontlight or anything, just ambient light in a room with a window). First of all, i have been using mine over last week (from 7am to 5pm) to work as my primary AND only monitor (coding, word and excels). In my room i have the table next to the window, so the light is not a problem from 9am till the end of my work, and the monitor can be used perfectly without an artificial light source almost all work time. The panel itself is a little more darker that my Boox Note Air 4C, i bought it with the believe that the panel will be the same, but no, the is a little more dark, but like i said, can be used without problems in a normal room with ambient light if there is a window. The monitor is very responsive, i didnt notice lag or anything in that regard, its like my normal monitors and i was expecting some lag, but no, so perfect in that. About the modes of the monitor (Auto, Graphic, Text and Video), i didnt use the software, just the modes that comes with it (cant install external software in the Windows without authorization, and for this is impossible), i will be direct here, to work, there is ONLY 1 mode and 1 level on it that works good, ONLY 1, is in the Graphic mode, and the level where the lines start to display, the other modes are directly useless, the colors in the other modes are unusable or the lines directly dissapears or are very bad displayed). This mode add grains to the background colors, and the backgrounds and not solid colors, is like snow of the color with white dots (there are in reddit photos of it in some posts, and its true), but is a thing that its there but with the time you get used to it. I work writing documents with word, making excels, browser and coding (Intellij IDEA, Visual Studio and VSCode, and other software like dbeaver, notepad++, SoapUI, JasperReport, etc.) and with the mode i mentioned before, i can work with all of that just fine without the need of my other monitors, i just need basic colors to work. The ghosting is there, but nothing extreme or very remarked, i used the monitor this week and i never had the need to refresh the image. There is a clicking noise when a video or something start to play (i dont know why). I have severe eye strain with headaches due to the monitors, and the thing i almost inmediately noticed, my eyes hardly hurt at all, I bought the monitor for that very reason because i was desperate and give it a try. I have been on strong medication for months and this week I stopped taking it in the middle of the week and I feel better now, and the only change was the monitor. I will try to use only this monitor as much as i can from now on to work, i only hope it last atleast 2 years, i know these kind of devices have very limited lifespans but is very expensive, and because i know too that once it leaves Chine there is no support for warranties. I leave this here in case it helps anyone make up their mind.
You, too, may want to try the newer, and presumably cheaper Sunvision Displays that are coming out this month. I've been using their larger 32" reLCD monitor for about 18 months and couldn't be happier! It is truly a blessing for the eyes as I have to spend many hours working behind a computer going through LaTex files for a publisher. Going back to a backlit LCD monitor at night is a killer. But the new SVD's will enable users to use them at night time too.
Cannot wait for the full review! I hope you will switch a Windows light theme for it. Also maybe worth investigating is if you can somewhat improve colors with the NVIDIA digital vibrance slider. Also worth investigating if changing in Windows settings default monitor scaling settings and/or font scaling (these can be separate) helps for legibility without having to zoom in each program separately. Windows also has a grayscale color filter and it might interesting to turn it on to check how the monitor would look fully in grayscale.
Excellent review from Voja! Thanks a million. It's good you pointed out the Mac-compatibility issue as I was ready to splurge on this new monitor. As a dedicated Mac user, however, I think I'll opt for the Bigme B251 instead. Great review!
Thanks, but that will have the same issue, as the problem is the signal refresh methodology sent from MacOS to a screen that uses an e-ink screen. So I'm not sure you'll be able to get a different experience on that monitor.
@@MyDeepGuide Oh, no! Thanks so much for this information. I wasn't aware of this problem. It's strange that the e-ink producers are not able to solve this problem, especially considering that practically everyone at US colleges and universities uses Macs, both professors and students. This is terrible news, but greatly appreciated. Your insight has saved me a bit of money!
Well its not a problem that they can solve. It's a problem OS developers should solve by implementing an option to mark a connected display as an ePaper display and then send an image signal to it optimized for that technology.
@@MyDeepGuide Yesterday I learned that the Sunvision Display people are now bringing out a few new models that will allow users to work at night or in dim light. THAT is THE solution for me. Since I already use the SLV 32" monitor for daytime work and absolutely love it, all I need is a version that features either a front light or some other technology that makes it usable at night. The Sunvision displays are truly life-savers for the eyes! So I'll be saying good-bye to the flirts with e-ink :) Thank you, Voija!
Very good review, it answered all the questions I wanted to know. It is really fast, but too pricey and the resolution will be diminished also in part because of the size of the screen. Goodereader has announced that Dasung is now releasing a color 12 inch screen with 41 FPS- not in European or North-American territory yet. I hope you will be able to get your hands on that for a review. It would be good to see if the smaller screen yields better resolution.
It seems like font clarity in rendering is a Windows issue; the same problem appears on some OLED displays too, where fonts can look pixelated and lack anti-aliasing at 100% zoom, especially on non-RGB panels. I’d be interested to see how this display performs on Fedora 41 with KDE spin, could be enlightening to confirm if it’s a anti-aliasing and subpixel rendering Windows-specific problem. Great video, as usual. Liked and shared. ps: you can try Fedora on a live USB, you don't have to format your PC.
The Daylight Computer tech is the way forward. (Black & White LCD.) It's a modernization of the old calculator screen tech. It's as fast as a regular monitor, sharp and daylight viewable without a backlight.
Great question. As an owner of the BigMe, I'd love to know. As an aside, I'm very happy with my BigMe monitor. (Except I hate the voice commands with a passion)
Thanks a lot for your review! Really appreciate your work. I plan to get an e-ink monitor for 8hrs/day coding. I have a triple screen setup and I'll have the e-ink monitor on the center mainly for the coding part. I was torn between Dasung 253, Dasung Color and Mira Pro. Based on your opinion it seems Dasung color is my best bet right? (considering I'll increase the font size a bit to have more clear text). Do you have an ETA on when you'll have the video with the tests? I'm curious to take a look at those tests before I make my purchase
On par with RLCD panels. Anything that's not mass produced on a super massive scale or regularly used in a wide variety of products will have a much higher price.
@@MyDeepGuide that would be the most interesting use case, using it ie on the balcony to get fresh air and sufficient daylight, while doing work. how is it, when you use it directly in front of a window (screen shows outside)?
Thanks for the review. Quick question: is there any mode that is good for both text editing and web browsing (text), e.g. if you need to switch back and forth between web and Word, do you need to constantly tweak the monitor setting? This was one of the strong points of the Mira Pro (10% filtering and 15% outling works okay with both)
Would this monitor be good for Solid works, FreeCAD, or Fusion 360 3D modelling? or even PCB design (like KiCAD)?? I'm an engineer and would be very interested in these applications.
@jonathanrodriguez8219, Good question. Also interested in the same question, for Solid Edge, other CAD programs. I am guessing turning of the 3D models (including some procedures, extraction of solids , other) might not be fast, while working with the drafts, draft pages, A0,A1 and other should be okay, the static images and modification of the values.
The technology is improving, and that is exciting. If the price was 1/4 of the price, I would definitely buy it (even with the requirement of running some software to make it work with my Mac) and if it had Gallery 3 level colours, "brightness" and resolution with the Kaleido 3 speed, maybe even 1/2 the price would be ok, but at the current price point and tech level, it is not for me. The future looks promising though (even though it might still take many years). BTW, your movie voice is starting to approach Pete Gustin levels 😀.
not sure if my company allow me to install the software in my laptop. So if it is not allowed, can the screen still work properly or good enough to use?
Do you know that is it possibility to upgrade in some way the old one, color paperlike, I bought mine in August and if I would know I would wait for better one which is 3x rapid than the last version. Dasung is obliged to make this upgrade due to their's previous customers imo
I'm not sure that I have ever heard of such practices from other monitor manufacturers. Have you? And based on what you say they are obligated to do that?
@MyDeepGuide cos, it was a really short amount of time since they announced new one and the cost of two monitors are closed. You give 100 dollars more and have 3x better speed monitor
It's stupid to buy an e-ink monitor for that kind of money and use it with frontighting, because when you use it with frontlighting, it just turns into a bad monitor. In addition, the layer applied for frontlighting reduces the contrast of the image and adds an extra transparent layer on top. Why did they ruin it with frontlighting?
And sadly, NONE of the e-ink monitors - not Boox Mira Pro, nor Bigme B251, nor Dasung - will work with the M-chip Macs. Users report all kinds of problems that can clearly not be resolved. For Mac users, the only solution is reflective LCD monitors, and there are only 2 in the US: the Eazeye Radiant and the Sunvision 32". The former is too small and the latter too big. C'est la vie.
@corgikun2579 , how it would help. At which part of the video the focus was bad, according to your standpoint? IMHO, the focus was fine throughout the video.
What an almighty piece of crap. The worst piece of tech of the year? To be fiddling with the settings all the time, back n forth. Searching for the cursor... Horrible device..amusing to watch voja try to do an actual review. Realistically, throw it out the window.
As the only screen it would not be good, but to sit outside in the sun during summer and code or write with a wireless keyboard in my lap and this monitor to look at doesn't sound all that bad. The price tag quickly dissolves that idea though.
