      Interesting, when I was writing my masters thesis (loooong time ago) I bought myself a Cornerstone 19 inch grayscale CRT with a razor sharp display and high refresh rate. I had a similar journey getting used to it and also found the lack of color relaxing.

    Frankly, this excites me for what is to come in the next 5-10 years. With the market realizing how much lower e-ink power consumption is, it will push the tech forward for advertising in retail, etc. and hopefully more niche consumers will benefit as resolution, framerate, and now color capacity increases. I can see this being a really welcome option for architects who stare at a screen all day - once things move forward in a few years and color is added, I could see a product like an E-Ink Surface Studio being a huge hit with creatives - it can both be a monitor or become a digital drafting table that doesn't emit any blue light!

    Nice review that sums up a lot of my thoughts and experiences on using e-ink devices. Due to severe migraine and eye strain issues from flickering light which unfortunately returned for me in late 2019, I switched to using a Onyx Boox Max 3 as a stopgap solution for a monitor, then shortly afterwards Dasung Paperlike Pro-F, and a Hisense A5 ProCC as a phone.
    However, for a year I have been using Sun Vision Display's RLCD monitor and even though I really love it, because it has colors and a 60 Hz refresh rate, I have to agree with your take that monochrome e-ink has a very calming effect especially for working purposes and if money permits it again in the distant future, I would definitely consider buying one of the widescreen e-ink monitors on the market right now solely for my remote job and other work-related tasks.

      @@AndrewFolts The contrast is a good deal lower than e-ink and displays with LED backlighting. How you set it up, that is, where it is placed in relation to windows or lamps in a room is a huge factor in getting it in a usable state and I have to turn on my lights sooner especially during this time of the year.
      Detail/color is nice - I had to turn up the saturation for red up a bit, but other than that it's fine with me (if it's bright or you can get actual sunlight on the monitor, it looks quite close to OLED). Actually if you open a picture with a 1920x1080 resolution, the monitor looks like a framed picture.

    Considering eye strain I'd suggest trying EIZO office monitors (EV series) and setting brightness to level 1-2, it's less than 5 cd/m2 (may be 1-2 candells) and works for me just fine. There are little to no LCD panels in the world allowing you to do that. Usually you're allowed to set brightness to 20-30 cd/m2 as the lowest option. IIRC for less than 10 candells different eye receptors are used.

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Seems like a great option for anyone who needs color. An e ink monitor will still be healthier tho, considering there's zero blue light and 100% of it is just gentle diffused light from the ambient environment. Also, with e ink there's a low refresh rate and zero refresh rate when the page is static versus any LED/LCD monitor, which is constantly flashing 60-120+ times per second.

    I am a coder and in terms of eye comfort I firmly believe that the modern trend of people using dark UIs and light text is sacrificing eye comfort for a "cool look". I am aware that a lot of people claim that dark UIs feel better *to them*, so I can't explain this discrepancy - whether it is people kidding themselves, I'm wrong, or that different people genuinely have different vision.

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, research has shown that light text on a dark background is harder for the brain to process, which is why I love e ink, because you can have a light background without the high intensity LED light. It's such a joy to code on!

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's how dithering works-it looks like clusters of dots up close and regular text at a distance. The Mira is by no means an ultra HD display, but I can code all day with no eyestrain or fatigue, whereas my eyes get bloodshot after half an hour on LED. No way would I ever go back to that.

    • @ApprendreSansNecessite
      @ApprendreSansNecessite ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndrewFolts I guess people with different eye conditions, such as astigmatism, have different requirements.
      That said, I bet an aliased font looks better than a dithered font and I wonder if you could achieve better results by disabling font smoothing in your OS. It's something you can do in the terminal.
      Font smoothing works by using greyscales or even colours to trick your eye into thinking the font is smooth, but you are using a monitor which is not able to render this effect and instead tries to convert the image back to black and white by applying dithering on top of it. It has to be a lossy operation.
      Another thing that might improve readability even more would be to use a font that was designed for low resolution screens and has better font hinting. They are out of fashion nowadays, but E-ink monitors seem to have similar limitations to older LCD/CRT monitors, so maybe the same cure could have the same effect.

A while ago I purchased the Sun Vision Display RLCD (reflective LCD) monitor which uses ambient reflected light and is as fast an LCD with full colors too. @@AndrewFolts I have some pretty significant eye problems from my days as a software engineer. The e-ink monitor was a big help, but I would still have issues using it because of the high contrast and also, I think, due to the auxiliary light I use with it. There is usually much less actual contrast between colors that there is between black and white, and that is important for me. So, the RLCD is quite a bit easier on my eyes, but I can still overdo it sometimes., though it usually takes many hours. The challenge with the RLCD was working out the auxiliary lighting. E-ink has a much brighter background which is absent on the RLCD. Since you are happy with how the e-ink monitor is working for you, I certainly wouldn't make a change. Someday the large e-ink monitors will have color displays and graphics processors to assist with refresh and ghosting, and then e-ink will be even more useful.

    Hi Andrew, thanks for your informative & honest review of that Mira monitor. I also suffer from the eye fatigue when using regular LCD/Led displays and I'm about to buy my first e-ink. Did you happen to have a chance to use / test a color eink monitor (25" Dasung or BigMe)? I would love to hear your opinion before taking my final decision on which eink model fits me better (whether color or b&w). What I found out so far is that Kaleido 3 technology has some drawbacks including the darker screen and the text is generally a bit more dull (both compared to a regular 25" b&w eink). The displayed colors are washed out like in an old newspaper, but that's not an issue for me. I'm using my PC mostly for coding, excel, browsing, emailing, youtube and occasionally some games. Most of these activities don't require colors, however they are a nice addition when coding (you know, like green strings, yellow vars, etc). How long did it take you to get used to the b&w/greyish code and would you consider replacing your current eink to a color one (considering the above drawbacks)?

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      IMO, color e ink is not accurate enough yet to be of any use. I had a color e ink tablet and ended up selling it, because the colors weren't even close enough to confidently shop for clothes, let alone do design work, etc. And you're right, the clarity of color e ink is worse. What I've found is that I actually prefer doing almost everything, including coding, in black and white. It's so relaxing and I'm mostly working with colors stored in variables, hex codes, etc, which doesn't require having to constantly see things in color. I've edited every single video on y B&W Mira since getting it. I just use my MacBook at the end to color grade. Honestly, I wouldn't want a color e ink monitor, even if the tech was better, because it only took about a week to fall in love with grayscale and it's so much better for focus/productivity.

      The key is to use the "Anti-Shake" feature with the Mira app. It's a bit quirky, because you have to select "Low" first then "High," but after that the flickering stops and only occurs when the page is moving. If you're looking at a static page it'll be as still as a newspaper. I'd also recommend making your desktop background pure white, which will hide some of the flickering.

      So just to make sure I understand
      1, the Boox Mira Pro never flashes on a static image, like a page of a book, or a scanned image of a picture-so you do not have to use the ‘Anti-Shake’ feature on that.
      2, It does flash on any moving image, like watching a video, or doing desktop filing-when you move the files across your desktop they will flash; however, you can stop that flashing entirely by using the ‘Anit-Shake’ feature. Once you use the ‘anti shake’, the video and desktop filing flickers stop.
      Did I get that right???

      They have the 13" Mira, which is less expensive. The Tab Ultra can be used as an external monitor with a third party app like Duet Display, but I found the performance kind of slow. • @go_vegan
    @go_vegan ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for you insight. I bought also one, but the flickering of some "colors" is not very pleasant to me. Do you recognize flickering of some colors and are you comfortable with this? The PPI is for an e-ink panel pretty low, due to the low quantity of colors anti-aliasing isn't working properly, therefore the resolution is not fine for me. Do you also recognize the noise in idle and the louder high pitch noise while using Text mode?

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you on a M1 Mac? Unfortunately Apple forces all monitors to use temporal dithering, which causes pixels to flicker rapidly to produce more colors. You don't notice it on LED, because the refresh rate is so high, but on e ink it can be annoying. What I did is make my desktop background pure white and set the Mira app to "Anti-Shake: High." FYI, for some reasons the setting only kicks in if you toggle it between "close" and "high" a couple times, and you have to do it every time the computer wakes up from sleep or restarts. Not ideal, but that's the tradeoff of using new tech from small companies.
      The resolution is is fine for me, as I'm not doing anything on the monitor that would require pixel perfection. I actually love that it's a bit crunchy up close, because it looks more natural, less digital. Also, the noise might be the fan. Text mode is useless, IMO, and I'm never on it, but I can hear a soft fan noise in default mode.

      Unfortunately, OLED screens are even worse for eyestrain than LED due to having a higher light-to-dark ratio. They also constantly refresh 60-120 times per second (like a strobe light) whether or not anything is happening on the screen vs e ink, which just sits there (like a newspaper), which is ideal for writing and reading. Even dimmed, OLED is always going to be brighter than everything around it (adding to the contrast issue) vs e ink, which is exactly as bright as the rest of the room (the way things are in nature).

      My eyes felt better immediately, although it took brain at least a week to adjust, because it was so different working in grayscale and with a slower refresh. Now's it's just like reading a paperback.
      One thing to check is your lighting setup. Glare could certainly tire out your eyes, so I found it works best to have two lights positioned at 45deg. One is about 2-3 feet away and pointed forward, so as not to come into my field of vision. The other is lamp hanging maybe 8 feet behind and to the right of me. It's not that it's slow it's that the screen doesn't refresh as often as an LED screen, which refreshes maybe 120 times per second. You'll be annoyed the first few days, but then your eyes will get used to knowing how to move the mouse cursor with e ink and it'll feel totally normal. Give it a week or so. (:

    Stupid question: where is the actual computer you’re running off? Under the desk? I’m considering this monitor as a replacement for my iMac screen, but am struggling I to figure out where I’m going to put the iMac if the Mira is taking up all the desk space.

    • @AndrewFolts

      I put my Mac Mini M1 off to the right, behind my drum set and run a USB-C cable up under the desk. For a while I was using it with an iMac, and yea, ha, I did just put it under the desk.

      @@MrJsalisbury Don't have one currently, but I used it mirroring my iPad's screen while doing a video call, and it worked fine. Much more relaxing than LED. Although if someone had to show you something in color a second display (iPad, etc) would be needed.

    I'm really thinking about buying this for work but I wonder if it would work with Autocad since I do electrical drawings. Also, i see that you programmed a shortcut to invert colors. This is programmed on the monitor itself or on the OS of your computer? I mean is this an option offered by Boox?

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  ปีที่แล้ว

      Invert is just a Mac shortcut. You could potentially use it for Autocad, although I think it would work best for the beginning stage when you were putting together the basic structure. It begins to get messy with the ghosting when you have complex textures/gradients, etc, so I usually finish up designs on my MacBook.

    Thank you for this great video! I made the purchase decision after watching your video! Do you see any concern about using two Mira pro side by side? My everyday work involves a lot of data processing (Google sheet, Excel, etc.) & coding. I am used to a curved 38-inch screen. I am considering the scenario of opening multiple windows while working. Does using two Mira pros side by side sound unrealistic?

    Hi, did you try other DAWs or just Logic? I assume you have to give up colour grouping on the piano roll (and other colour based tools like locking up treble notes while editing the bass ones), did you find a way to work around that? Also, do you find that the lack of colours affects your ability to use certain EQ tools? Like when you have three EQ nodes of different colours. I also wonder if the refresh rate hampers little things like automating an LFO, if the timeline cursor is fast enough that it maps 1:1 to what is playing.
    Also in VSCode, did you have any difficulty spotting squiggly red linter suggestions?
    That's a lot of questions, thank you in advance! We have very similar use cases, so to me this is the best review of the product on the web, subscribed! :D

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried Abelton, which seemed fine. When I upgraded to a newer Logic I didn't even have to invert the colors, because the theme is lighter. I've not run into any issues with needing color, but then again my use case is fairly simple. I've had no problems with VSCode either, since the high-contrast theme really helps to make things more visible. I had a tone of questions like this, and at the end of the day I had to just buy the monitor and give it a try for a week, knowing I could return it if things didn't work out.

    the only way that this tech will improve, is if we support what is already there. i love the concept of E ink, however it wont catch on until colored e ink is available and effective. also i think these screens need a backlight that can be switched on and off.

    Hello Andrew, I see that the text and icon on the monitor does not look crisp most of the time, is this normal?

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, it's dithered. Much like a newspaper, it looks crunchy up close, but at reading distance it's perfectly clean, because the arrangement of dots creates the illusion of shading, contrast, etc. Obviously, it's not meant to be a high-res monitor, tho. The purpose is more for reading, writing, and doing rough drafts for for visual projects, like video editing, which you finish up on a regular LED monitor or device.
