    The reason Hydroponic Tomato's don't split open is because they always have all the water they need and don't get a rush of water, like from a heavy rain storm. Great video and good looking Tomato's! God bless and keep on growing & making more videos to teach the rest of us!

      correct the reason why they split is the get surplus water then drier condition then water again , as long as the water supply is consistent and don't get a sudden surplus they will not split, also leaving as you do the space so air roots form helps in the overall ability of the plant to regulate itself

    I spent the holiday doing my gardening from under a patio umbrella. It was great sitting in a chair, filling nutrient buckets, cutting noodles, and inserting plants. Hydroponic gardening is awesome. Fast forward to today, and I would like to pass on an observation. I have been bringing home red, and blue coffee containers from work. I have hundreds of them. Some I have painted, or covered with tape. Others I have left plain. My observation today was that the red containers have long strings of algae growing from the bottom of the roots. The blue containers are still clean, and clear. My priority will now be to get the reds covered, and then move on to the blues. I hope this helps somebody.

    To reduce pests.
    I use a mini shop or car vacuum with hose connection I put a fishnet sock over vac hose & sucks all the insect & catapillers off my veggie plants with the netting it's gentle on plants just sucks bugs a few dead leaves. Quick & simple to do 1 or 2 twice a week. It's amazing how many bugs come off purchased plants from retail stores or plant nurseries. If you use a piece of sticky tape/ fly tape in you collection cup easy to rid your garden of pests.
    Try this method mini vacuum cost less than $12 & have used it for 10+ years. Let me know if this helps any other tomatoes growers.

    Another awesome video!! Deciding what I will have in Hydroponics outdoors this year. I think tomatoes crack due to the fact that they dry out then get watered a number of times during their life cycle. I have heard when they dry out and then get watered they basically try to make up for the lack of water and pull in to much. similar to a watermelon when you cut one open and it has a crack inside, they say that is the same reason drying out then pulling to much water at one time to make up for it. Maybe not so, but I read that somewhere. Keep the videos coming always good information!

    The reason soil based tomatoes split is from a large influx of water and a change in the amount of water the plant is getting. Hydroponic tomatoes have a constant water supply so they don’t over compensate and split the fruit.

    from what ive read, the reason tomatoes split open is after a dry spell, their skins thicken to retain moisture, then when it rains and they get abundant moisture, it ruptures the skin. i.e. they need regulated moisture to not split. love your vids. im starting some static hydroponics this weekend and most of the ideas are from you. thank you very much.

    I know this is an elementary question, but I know in some applications it is suggested to just add water to the reservoir unless you completely change out the nutrient solution. In this setup, are you continually filling the bucket to the designated level with full strength nutrient solution?

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yes. That's why the best crops are fast maturing leafy greens. You will not have to refill much. I believe I only refilled these about 5 times with 1 to 2 gallons of solution. If you want to, it is best to get a meter and measure the ppm but I am trying to make things easy for beginners.

    Mike: Thanks for sharing this interesting and great video. Could you help me by answering the following three questions? (1) During initial transplant, can you tell what is the air/water roots when it just came from soil, and how much gap of air space from the bottom of the net cup needs to be reserved for the air initially? (2) You have to add water and nutrients several times by using 5 gallons tank. If I use a bigger tank to avoid adding water for the complete life cycle of a tomato plant, what should be the size, is 15 gallons tank sufficient? Will the water requirement has a difference between the sizes of tomato(3) If I cover the top of net cup with plastics to avoid rain water getting in, will it cause insufficient oxygen inside the air space for the plant?

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      !) I don't try to differentiate, I just fill the solution up so it touches the bottom of the net pot (maybe 1/4"). The right roots will find their way down. 2) For tomatoes, the bigger, the better. They grow many roots and get quite long. I have pulled out some roots that were over 4' long. Don't know if it affects the size. 3) You can cover it, there is no way you will stop oxygen from getting in.

    Thanks for sharing another great video. A couple questions. How hot has it been in your area? Just wondering because if the water gets to hot it will kill the plants. Are you worried that the root system of the tomato’s in pvc pipe will clog it up?

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry your comment got lost George. It has been in the upper 80's to lower 90's. They will clog up the pipe sooner or later. If I get time, I pull them out and trim the roots. They are full of tomatoes now, just waiting on them to ripen and was contemplating harvesting the entire NFT system, breaking it down, cleaning and showing viewers me putting it back together. I usually don't grow tomatoes, everyone was asking to see them.

    Hi, I live in Tampa and have been using the Dutch Bucket system for 2 years with great results. Do you believe that you get just as good results using only the bucket, net pot and clay pebbles, without the circulation of the Dutch Bucket system.

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, not at all. The Dutch Buckets are better as are traditional hydro and aquaponics. This is good for beginners or people that do not want the added attention you have to pay to those systems. I am on the road a lot with no back up. If my pump fails in 90 degree weather, my crop is toast in an NFT system. With the non circulating you don't have to worry about that or anything getting clogged up.

    Excuse me, I didn't understand why you did a little hole, it's because we need to allow the oxigen enter into the container or, it's just to add nutrients, and, it's necessary to do the hole in all our containers?, Thanks for your videos, I like it so much!

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is so that when it rains it does not fill all the way back up and drown the roots. This non circulating system needs a small amount of empty space gor tge roots to take in oxygen.

  • @MsLaRuby
    @MsLaRuby 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you added the plant into the net pot--did you have to thread the roots through the openings? I have small 4-inch plants and want to put them into a 5-gallon container. Lastly, where did you get that black lid for the net pot? Thank you!

    • @KeepOnGrowin

      No, if some can fit through, it is cool. Just make sure the nutrient level touches some of the roots.

    • @gforcekaras
      @gforcekaras ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would drill a 1" center hole in the middle of the netcup to ensure the roots has access to the water. This helps to encourage more roots to grow towards the nutes and sustain the plant. You can find 6" netcup bucket lids on amazon or ebay.

    Mike how can I grow plants outside in Florida in the summer w/o a circulating pump?

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am in north Florida. The small, 20 hole, NFT system I have up is the only pump. Everything else you see in my videos is off grid and non circulating. You have to situate things to get morning sun and afternoon shade. Keep the solution from getting hot, shade the container and use larger sizes so it takes longer to heat up. It is a challenge, but not impossible.

    • @walkingwater893
      @walkingwater893 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike, so are you saying in general any plant growing in water should or could be in a less intense sun space as to not heat water too much. More shade space? And less sun is not an issue for growth/production of the plant? Do you ever take a temp of the H20? Sm. containers I would imagine could get very warm...Thank You!

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@walkingwater893 Yes, the bigger, the better. I never measure the temp, I stick my finger in the water, lol. Sun is important. Sometimes I just shade the container while the plant gets sun. Soil Tomatoes split open, after it has NOT been watered for some time and then when it gets sudden flooded by rain or over watering. This is caused by the sudden shock in water levels. Hydrophonics tomatoes are NOT shocked by constant water supply because it is always in the water.

    The reason Hydroponic tomatoes do not split, is because they do not get thirsty, like the ones in the ground. Hydroponics always have water, in the ground, they do not, so in their thirst, they take in a lot of water when it is available, which causes the tomato to burst.
