Hi Jim. I enjoyed this Kilchoman expression. On my palette I really loved tasting vanilla, caramel, a beautifully earthy fragrant peat, pear, and honey. I know what you mean with your review and you are right on that this expression could have been more fulfilling. Much appreciated! 🙂
Love yr description nose vs palate; I have not bought a new Homan since the Inaugural Summer/Winter release long ago - only because I am still waiting for one Homan's AGE release. . . "un-fulfilled" indeed.
If you want to hide your shame, there's a bin I know of where you can hide. Great, honest review Jim. The earlier 100% barley releases were a bit hit and miss imo. Should probably revisit it, as the 7 and 8 were the last two I tried, but with so much whisky available , and with reliably good expressions like Sanaig and Loch Gorm, I feel as if I would rather throw my money at those. Cheers!
Great review Jim! It was this 100% Islay 11th Edition that really made me start appreciating the Kilchoman profile. There are better Kilchomans but the 100% Islay editions are stripped down and lighter peated so you can really dig into what’s going on under the peat. I will always try to pick up the 100% Islay edition every year.
Kilchoman began production at the end of 2005. You really don't want to do the math there, Jim. I have the 12th Edition and I thoroughly enjoy it. You have to understand this is Kilchoman in general is a cleaner peat. The 100% Islay dials back the peat level on top of that. It's a different style compared to Ardbeg, Laphroaig or even Lagavulin. The lower peat level lets some of the fruit and herbal character shine instead of the smoke and brimstone. The price isn't cheap, but it isn't Ardbeg Committee releases either. And many recent of those have been just awful.
Looks like you had a long week 😆😅 🤣 thanks for the unintentional comedy video. Love these releases, had editions 8, 9, 10. Wont bore you with all the nerdy details I have accumulated about these releases. Cheers Jim
Yep. 100% Islay is a great concept but given the asking price it’s going to have to be better than good before I buy another bottle. Bruichladdich suffer from the same hurdle. I support the ideal but there’s better smelling and tasting peated malt for less £. It’s fashionable these days to bash Ardbeg but the 10 and Uigeadail are still among the best Islay malts you can buy for under £60-£70.
Great review Jim still not tried this one, and yet to open the Maderia cask i have, and correct me if I'm wrong but aren't Kilchoman about or have released a 16 yo??
Thanks for reviewing this one, Jim. Have not had this batch, but do have batche 12 (2022) and picked up batch 13 earlier this autumn. The casks vary from batch to batch, batch 13 being a bourbon only cask. Both batches 12 and 13 are 8yo, so I suggest Kilchoman (est 2005) has turned it into an annual (more or less 8yo) release after possibly younger releases earlier on. I conclude that havving tried batch 3 from 2013 as well. Slàinte mhath.
It's bizarre how Kilchoman still feel like a new distillery but, in the scheme of things...aren't really. There's certainly no denying they know what they're doing. I look forward to age stated whiskys from them. Couldn't be too far off. Slàinte Frank.
There is a 16 yo release at the moment available here (their first ever & a very small batch). The price asked for it (259 €) makes it a big "NO" from me...Prices are crazy for some whiskies at the moment, the reason I never jumped on even some ltd releases at 120/150 € from them...unless they'll come across as exceptional or really excellent after a try, I prefer by far core range & for now my favorite expression & best value bottle from them is their release for France & even for supermarkets (but I heard on latest Roy's live it was now available in UK through M&S channel of shops, but not sure it is the same expression & same recipe, so maybe it's worth checking out ?), is the "Loch Gruinart" (a mix of Bourbon & Sherry casks, bottled at 46 %), an incrediblly well blended whisky in my opinion and batch after batch a real treat..I'll be uncorking soon my third bottle & first release was from 2020 !).The 100 % Islay I'm not sure to enjoy much, considering the first releases I tried from it, decent, but with something missing, but maybe they're better these last years ? I don't know...Cheers !
We all have different taste buds if we all like the same whisky, it would not be worth reviewing I am about to review a whisky There is so much hype about I think it is shit watch this space
Just bought some of this 11 addition in Colorado. Specifically, North colorado, US and I'm gonna try this.Thank you for looking into it.

Cheers Tim. My knowledge on Kilchoman was obviously flagging a bit 😄😄. Some research was carried out afterwards 😉

Turns out the distillery was established in 2005. Didn't think they'd been around that long 🤷♂️.
Cheers mate.
