I've been impressed with Kilchoman overall. The Sanaig, Machir Bay CS and Islay Barley have been my favorites to date. I did have a chance to try the 16 year old and was disappointed, especially for the price that they were asking.
Hi Peter, I tried it at the Glasgow Whisky Festival last November and found it 'just okay' , In speaking to quite a number of attendees I found that this was the general consensus. At an MSRP of around $200 this was a rare misstep for the distillery.
Hello. I use to have and only one tested - its Kilchoman Sanaig. And it was very unexpected from young distillery, especially when you like peat! Today ordered new release - Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2024 - I'm really looking forward to it. BTW, who knows how much bottles it was released in this year? Thanks for the video!
Only had the Sanaig and I loved it. Like a Uigeadail Jr. I had it side by side with a Bowmore 15 (both of them samples) and the Sanaig mopped the floor with it, so much better even being NAS.
Good to know. I am looking forward to doing this flight of Kilchoman in the near future and I am looking forward to what Kilchoman does in the future. I have a feeling they are going to be doing very good things based on what they are already doing. Cheers.
yes, it's true, they have they own malting floor. But for the whisky they are using malt from Port Elen (50ppm). Only for edition 100% Islay they use they own malt (20ppm).
1st time trying Kilchoman was like 4 years ago, in a small, private shop, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Bishop'sLanding if you're in the area. They had 5 or 6 different bottlings... which they let me try most. I went home with two. Senaig was my favorite that i was willing to dropthe cash on. Looking forward to the flight.
I have this bottle and I think I got a bit more smoke off of mine and like yours it tasted pretty young. I am letting mine sit as well, it’s been open about a month. For the cost, I don’t know if I’d replace it, I think Bunnahabhain Toiteach is similar a bit smoother and a bit less $$
Still have to try this one. Have only had pours of Kilchoman and always enjoyed it, never a bottle. Not sure why - need to decide where to start and get one.
It would help if you’d give the PPM peat %. I like the 16 year Lagavulin but any peat that is over that % is hard for me to enjoy. But I’m worworking on that slowly. I also found that if I drink a non-peated scotch I get more notes out of the 16 year. Great review. Enjoy!!
I have not had a chance nor an opportunity to acquire and try the Loch Gorm. I have a bottle of Sanaig and it is good. I wonder if this parallel most of the flavor profile of Uigeadail if you put aside salty, sea breeze flavors of Uigeadail which I love. I would love to try more offerings from Kilchoman, unfortunately I don't have access to more bottles aside from Machir Bay and Sanaig in my market.
I like Kilchhoman, and I think with time their core range will get better as they have older whisky. I just hope their prices will not get out of hand.
I wouldn't say young or hot, just tight and "bottled up" I was amazed how well it opened up. Not $100 amazed but very happy to finally own one of these. Mine's the 2022 also. Not sure if I would buy another one. I really enjoy the USA releases at $75 and i might try anew 100%/ islay
@@whiskeyisajourney if you can afford to keep this on your bar, I don't think it will ever really disappoint. There are not that many 46% Oloroso peat monsters out there, especially from Islay. The alternative might be an independent Caol Ila or Ardmore which would have higher ABVs. Or Uigeadail. I suggested this to my local shop last year and they sold all 6 quicker than the other Kilchomans next to it. I guess it was harder to get 2,3,4 years ago. Some people really prefer the Sanaig, so that's a nod for the budget. We are talking about NAS here. I'll say again, keep your eyes out for the USA releases.
A body of mine had an earlier version of this and didn’t like it so much. For me, I’ve only had the Machir Bay and I found it to be lemony with a decent amount of Peat. It felt thin with the mouth feel. I had one of their special additions and it tasted better. I’ve bought a couple of different ones of Kilchoman. I won’t be buying anymore.
Awww.....round it up to 4. I just bought the Cognac Cask (matured not finished) bottling. I might be kind of a Kilchomalter (that's the cult name that I just came up with because it "malters' my reality.....LOL) Seriously they can generally do no wrong except for maybe charging $300 for the 16 year old. Even that is forgivable. So far in all my journeys through Kiclhoman I enjoyed a single cask Port Finish bottling the most.....and the Machir Bay Cask Strength with the Santa Sheep. If those two were available all the time I would pursue an Amazon subscription.....although that's not available in Canada because we suck. Bye.
Kilchomalter🤪 Everyone of those offerings sound fantastic. I'm with you on Kilchoman doing no wrong. Everything I've had from them has been good. Each time I hit the store I look for something new from them. Cheers!

Oh no. Why was the 16 disappointing to you? I have not had it or even seen it.

I am not sure how many bottles were released, but I heard good things about the Loch Gorm 2024 release. Cheers!

@@whiskeyisajourney I’m guessing the Loch Gorm is better but the Sanaig is an amazing whisky nonetheless.

Thanks for sharing. This is all good information to know. Cheers!

I'm looking forward to doing that flight. It will probably be in June or July.

I can see that. Bunnahabhain is always good.
Im still a bit afraid of peat so I added this one to my try list.
Win the peated flight and I'll send you a sample of this along with it.
Still have to try this one. Have only had pours of Kilchoman and always enjoyed it, never a bottle. Not sure why - need to decide where to start and get one.
Based on what I've had from them, you can start anywhere and get any bottle.

50ppm and at least 8 years old. Not sure about the accuracy of this, but that's what I found.
@@whiskeyisajourney thanks for getting back. I’ll look for this bottle have a store that has a pretty good selection.

I will put them into my blind samples and find out. I keep looking for new releases but so far it's always just the standard stuff.
I like Kilchhoman, and I think with time their core range will get better as they have older whisky. I just hope their prices will not get out of hand.
I'm right there with you on all accounts. Cheers!
The 2021 Loch Gorm I’ve got has a tag stating that its a minimum 9 years of age
And if i’m not wrong, the 2021’s vatting included PX casks. I get a tasting note akin to a mouthful of raisins😅
Good to know. I need to look at the 2023 release in the store and see if it says anything. My 2022 doesn't.
I wouldn't say young or hot, just tight and "bottled up"

I keep seeing the 2023 release at my local liquor store and keep passing it by. I might pick it up based on how the 2022 opened up.

Well that's not good. It's crazy how much palates differ from one another. I'll be interested to go back and retaste all of them.
