This episode had MOVIE quality bro
Don't throw "movie Quality" term everywhere when an episode looks great
@@A1000-b9sto be fair, the first 3? I think episodes of daima have released in theaters so I think theres some truth to this comment
@@hylianro theatrical releases is nothing uncommon. DS and and some other series did it too. We are Talking about production (which is still a TV production compared to a high Quality movie)

They cooked with the animation for Daima. I pray that Super looks like this too when it eventually comes back.
No, it's still really inferior to Z and even GT. The transition of Goku turning into a kid is just him swaying fast with no animation, whereas it's animated in GT with Goku seem regressing back in stages. Same thing with Vegeta's sacrifice, it's so inferior compared to Z, there's hardly any animation or good posing.
@@theurbanyouth there's countless other well animated in this episode tho. feels odd to kinda just take 1 scene that was less animated and take that as the standard.
@theurbanyouth Its not. Drahgon ball z and gt are mainly remembered for nostalgia and while they were good their animation and styles were never consistent and actually not that good model wise. Daima is overall much better and is far superior.
Super is done
@@theurbanyouth so you really comparing the The transition of Goku turning into a kid with gt's and thats your basis on it being inferior to db Z animation? LMFAO
Forgotten relic and animeajay posting the same series ? Truly the best timeline
I liked this analysis much more. It seems to only improve upon the content that AnimeAjay set up.
@@hazbaska1He really is the Ajay that went even further beyond. Way more consistent with his uploads, too
YES!!
I’m so glad to be fans of both of them rn fr
@@Neo-Midgarajay works for mark now though. not really his fault
I can’t believe people tried to hate on daima when the trailers came out smh. This is the most exciting dragon ball has been in a very long time
As someone that hated the way daima looked in the trailers. It's the star wars retreading that it seemed like it was going for that put people off. Not the animation.
Its not wrong to say that the first episode if Daima is the absolute best Dragon Ball has ever looked with the staff and production it has.
It was stunning but dbs broly was the best
@@JustAsh001I can't say that yet exactly but that Vegeta Goku fistfight went haaaaaard, I think they reused some scenes from broly or smth vegeta moved familiar
@@strob5657 it was pretty good especially since it was only sparring but dragon ball super broly movie is the best dragon ball has ever looked along with last few dragon ball z specials like fusion reborn
@@JustAsh001 TRUE TRUE I can't deny that. I'm just copemaxing in hopes the climax fight of the anime ends up being just as good as them
As a series, yes.
personally, imo the ending was fire
made it seem like the boombox was still blasting upbeat party music while the attendees were screaming in agony
added a bit of dark humor to the scene
i lowkey don't think that was the directors intention but i like that interpretation
It really feels like the 90s anime dragon ball art style translated to Modern Day. Like I was originally expecting some Super artstyle when this was first announced
that's why it feels trash
@@Shitposting_IHMN literally how?
Supers artstyle stemmed from budget and time constraints out the wazoo and not having enough source material as well as just Toriyama’s style changing after Z
Daima most likely has a much higher budget and more relaxed time lines than a mass release like Super
Super is what you get when you have great artists work together but work the shit out of each one
Dragon ball super animation is really bad bro.
Dr. Arinsu definitely has old-school Disney villain energy with her aminations.
Honestly, the fact that Daima looks so good makes me even more sad that they are going to turn into kids for at least the majority of the show.
I love the way most of the adult characters look and hope they keep a similar style to this or Shintani whenever Super comes back.
They definitely will turn back into adults. Probably after fighting those demons guarding the dragonballs
Anddddd… just stopped everything I was doing 👀🫡🤣
Both accounts 🫡🙌💜
Seriously. I pulled over to watch this
@@hazbaska1 LOL!!! Love it! How did you like episode 1!?
Dragon Ball daima looks so cool with chikashi Kubota
@forgottenrelics I love your videos man and about the animation process of dragon Ball and dragon Ball z GT
@@landenstanley thank ya!
@@forgottenrelics1197 I've been watching your videos for almost a year
4:04 Kubota low key drew Raditz like a modern Toriyama
6:40 its crazy how for one frame you can see an unaltered takahashi drawing when he's yelling
i swear it's like the only drawing of his untouched out of this entire episode haha
It’s insane that many of these animators were likely young men when they first joined and were still figuring it out in the 80s and 90s, and now they are masters who can fluidly make anything. Even crazier nowadays are how you have twitter animators who are prodigies at such a young age as freelancers working on like One piece for instance. It’s marvelous how the skills of animators only seems to be going up (provide budget and time are there)
Chikashi Kubota is an amazing animator/director and I did review the first episode it’s a 7.5 not a masterpiece but we finally have a dragon ball show with really good animation looking at you super 💀
Hope to see these weekly as well as Ajays
Love the Sea of Stars ost being used!
I hope that this is the base standard level of animation for the series
Thanks for the very well researched video!
This first episode has me so happy I thought Dragonball was past that type of animation and to see it gives me hope we can get that style back for a movie or when super returns
The light from the screen reflecting on the character is just a compositing technique called light wrap which is simple and easy to pull off but they don't bother doing 99% of the time XD
You guys know
I want this man to animate something
He is knowledgeable
It just makes me wish for a remake in that style of the flashbacks cause man that would be so good!
To me Kubota will be the quintessential embodiment of all Dragon Ball's art style changes combined into one
you can definitely tell the animators went all out with this, feels like they wanted to make the best thing they possibly could to commemorate Akira Toriyama, this being the last thing he was working on other than the manga.
I used to watch all kind of reviews when super was airing, but this is much better content. You actually know about stuff!
This is an excellent breakdown!
I want OG Dragon Ball reanimated in this style
This pulverizes Shintani style
15:12 Also why the hell has nobody pointed out that really nice attention to detail with Goku‘s hair being brushed by his his arms while he puts his hands behind his head 😂
yeah i legit only noticed it when editing this video. such a cool detail
YOO ITS YOU
Yes! I've been waiting anxiously for this one!
Id like to see the same style of animation if Super continues
yeah i'm very curious as to what stylistic approach they'll go with for Super
@@forgottenrelics1197 hey I'm curious, do you still feel that shintani's designs would be the best animation style for DBS S2(weekly anime) ? what if it'll be seasonal anime?
@@Kim-fv5ssshintani designs are better to use so when it goes off model like what takashi does it looks fine and not out of place
i wish buu always moved so stretchy since his abilities are like that, add some rubberhose elements and hed be even cooler
Man Kubota got me wanting to be an animator when I grow up. I know it’s challenging to be one, but if I can make scenes as beautiful as his, I would love to do that
It's just so crazy to really think that this and super were released (relatively) so close together. I know super had a really messed up production schedule and everything that could go wrong did, but the difference in polish and animation. Unrelated but excited to see Tsuji do some KA on a bigger production, her work on Heroes was awesome and I can't wait to see what she does here, hope she gets more recognition
This episode was a strong premier. Production values were through the roof, and the care poured into it by the production staff (and even Toei itself for giving them the resources/time needed) was obvious, was on display with every frame. This felt like one of the most Toriyama influenced works I’ve seen in a good while. It’s obvious that he played a big part in the production and that the staff responded in kind.
Was Super not influenced by Toriyama?
Didn’t Toriyama work on Super?
@zenvultra not even close to this. Super was Toriyama basically giving the staff bullet points for key plot points and that was it.
@@specialnewb9821 it’s interesting to see how the narrative changes over time, first it was Super is so great and canon because AT is involved and overseeing it and approving things, giving plot points etc. But now that Daima is the brand new thing and it’s great, they minimize AT involvement in Super.
@zenvultra He only did some character designs and some key plot points, but otherwise, not really at all. Toriyana has barely ever been involved in the anime. This work in particular is surprising as it is the most he's ever been involved. Story, character designs, storyboarding and key frames maybe? I'm not sure of the extent, but it's interesting because he was never interested in animation before. He took up this project and really made it more of his own. That's why this already feels a little more authentic to his style of art and comedy for example.
This video has honestly helped me with my art style, thank you. I've been trying to integrate Toriyama's Cell Saga art style into my own, because his style is so perfect.
no problem man, glad it was helpful :)
Fairly certain the money acquired over the years was spent on Daima animation. Animation at this level is very expensive and it’s safe to assume there is still no decision for Super coming back as an anime. Most likely the team just pressed forward with Daima and dumped everything into it.
From my knowledge, anime doesn't really run on money for higher profile anime. It's mainly how much time is given to animators and how much they care.
@@Cleric432 if this were true then there wouldn’t be so much inconsistency with all the episodes throughout all anime. There is a budget for everything and typically they save it for the big fights in the show.
@CrownxMe7 the inconsistency is the time spent. If the studio needs an episode out, then the animators will rush it. They get no pay increase for doing so.
This episode blew me away, honestly my mind was just playing the og dbz ost's during some of those flashback scenes.
I'm all for the series and considering buu was my fav arc in the anime this got me so emotional and happy seeing it animated it as well as it did.
I used to hate how dbs looked compared to Z and was always curious why they couldn't replicate the same artstyle even with modern animation technology, i did however love the highly detailed scenes in tournament of power arc that's my fav artstyle even more than the less detailed but flowy animation from dbs broly.
Daima showed me that it is definitely possible to do the same old artstyle even in modern times, I'd give anything to see a whole remaster of the dbz series in the same artstyle in future.
This was pretty much a love letter to dragonball fans if I've ever seen one.
Did not disappoint!! Nice explanation on the hair, shoulders... etc Fantastic video, man Iwazawa on here makes me hype for future episodes!!
I cannot get over how grateful I am you exist. This scratches SUCH A GOOD ITCH like I am SO HAPPY you’re so talented and well articulated. I frequently rewatch your videos because it’s just so amazing and niche
Love your insight on all this stuff, you're the best when it comes to analysing the animation
What a fucking banger of a video. ForgottenRelics doesn't miss.
Your videos are great! Good breakdown and lots of interesting info i wouldnt have found for myself 😁
Thank you LORD!
After Joker 2, this is fantastic. Let's just get a good Chopper and we might just make it
12:28 is what I compared Nakatsuru’s Goku to
I think one day they'll reanimate OG Dragon Ball.
They already have. They did make Path To Power.
@@AiresLA the entirety of dragon ball not just the red ribbon saga.
So happy to see such beautiful Dragon Ball animation again since Super Broly!❤ So glad to witness such greatness again! Cant wait for more!💪❤️
Phenomenal episode and Phenomenal breakdown by you! If by any chance soon Super returns character designs and supervision should be handled by Chikashi Kubota in my opinion because to me he really caught the feeling of Dragon Ball and the artstyle of Toriyama perfectly, most of the flashback scenes look straight out of the manga.
appreciate that. thank you!!
Dragon Ball being manga accurate feels so refreshing
man i just fcking LOVE that yuya takahashi made it to chief animation director. i knew he had the sauce when he popped up on super! so glad to see toei recognised his talent
'Thank you Kubota" HECK YEAH I can't wait to meet him next month!!
Dragon ball is either about to go crazy stupid on the charts, or people are gonna hate it, personally i love the worldbuilding we are gettting and all these insane animators and the action ppl, like dragon ball finally got the upgrade we needed, hopefully super comes back or something but dragon ball finally got its saving grace
All depends on how they do the story
I honestly don’t have much interest in the premise we were given as it’s already been done a few times in the series, but it’s a really good one to get the new generation into Dragon Ball
Gotta remember most of us got into this with Z/Kai and then more got introduced with Super (which kinda flopped outside of the 4 major arcs)
It also doesn’t help that this is a spin off series that nobody was expecting during a time where everyone had high expectations of the manga being further adapted
all i had to hear was that kubota worked on gurren lagann and flcl
12:35 that would be a dream come true. i need it so badly
0:11 cell looks so cool 😎
Im so excited for the sheer amount of lore that this shows gonna drop bro.
The first episode itself already proved evrryones suspicions on the Namekians origins but also has got me thinking about of Neva who ofcourse is a Demon Realm Namekian will be evil like Piccolo Daimao or will he be a good guy considering his creation of the Tamagamis that have guarded the Demon Realm dragon balls for thousands of years and I believe they follow the same idea of "testing" the pureness of one's wishes what i mean is , Kami in the original dragon ball was sick and tired that people used his creation for selfish wishes that only benefited them and if it were for Gokū showing his pure nature to use the balls to help others hed have not revived Shenlong, not to mention hiw the Old Kai was PISSED that there were more Dragonball sets.
So Im curious to see if Neva is either
A. Being "senile" to check and see if the Namekians were able to teach this idea in the outside world or have they failed and left the world selfish.
B. He is still acting senile and is cutting his time until his life is extended by Gomah by which he will slowly start pulling the strings and take the Demon King Position for himself because he believes that the Demon Realm is upto no good and dont deserve his wish granting orbs and must stop being selfish.
DB is so back with this series💯💯 so excited to see where it goes
Animation in 1 episode was amazing, and it didn't look so digital like most anime those days
Something so beautiful as a movie like quality for anime must be appreciated. Let's hope Toei (or whoever company did this) actually gives the animators proper income and rest so this whole series can be consistent with this kind of quality.
First Animeajay, then Screeg and now this channel... Im happy ❤
I love how it looks like it’s so damn good
Can’t wait for the next ep
Fantastic video, my friend.
Please Toei, let the man Kubota remake DB and let the world see its full glory in modern animations.
Kubota definitely knows how to translate the artstyle of Dragonball pretty flawlessly. They look almost 1 to 1 with DB and Z at times. Something people wished for. If he were to reanimate early Dragonball, it would look like early Dragonball in HD.
And I could tell this was coming. While I think Path to Power looks solid, it does have that issue of looking less like Dragonball and more like Z's redo of Dragonball or GT. It doesn't keep the artsyle.
It feels so damn good to see Dragon Ball thrive when it gets the love it deserves.
Even though I'm gonna wait till the Dub comes out it was awesome seeing the art and animation be far above what Dragon Ball Super did. (Aside from a few standout episodes)
Dragon Ball Super to me always felt too "clean" and bubbly but seeing more detail on the art really takes me back to Dragon Ball Z.
All I gotta say is thank you! The ending with the upbeat music while everyone looks like their in pain as their bones shrink, its jarring. It was the only point where I was like wtf happened 😮
Definitely can’t agree with you on 7:50
Toshiyuki Kan’no’s style is so GOAT’ed to me
I’ll just say it this is best looking anime right now
"But visually, I think this is the most appealing Dragon Ball has EVER looked in a TV series."
Bro just KNEW DBS Broly was more visually appealing
that, and my nostalgia bias for Z movie 1 and 13
@forgottenrelics1197 That fight against the minions in Z movie 1 just never get tired of it.
I already want to own it in 4K/blu ray
Kubota be like: Add a few extra zeros to my paycheck, Ill add a few zeros to yours.
Gosh this is look beautiful 😭🙏🏽
I was telling myself while watching the flashback scenes that if the dragon ball super manga gets its anima adaptation that I would want this art style to return cause I just gush over the fact that they perfected the shots from the manga frame to frame and now I just dream of the super manga getting a good treatment from the same team as well
I don't know why but the way Degesu is animated, he gives off closet nerd vibes. Lol Like he tries to appear calm and collected but then his movement can get real excited and silly like when he runs off with Gomah.
0:49
*Me watching names of Masaki Sato and Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru being inspiration of Kubota*
THAT IT 🙌🙂↕️
No more further introduction.
Kubota being the Chief Animator of Dragon Ball Daima is the BEST. THE BEST that has ever happened.
Can't wait for more dishes and more DB content to eat 😋 🍽
Mannnnn I love kubotas art styles for opm & DB
Annndddd…. It’s all over the screen!! 😂😂😂
Because it's 16:9?
If Kubota got Nakamura on here using a pen name I would cry lol
Great video. Small correction:yamamuro was credited with assistant animation direction, not 2nd key animation.
ahh your right. initially on kanzenshuu Daima's credits were fully ordered? so his name was at the bottom in the Ka section and i just assumed it was cleanup doing 2nd Ka.
same with datwergs original staff list tweet which is what i was going of. seems it's properly structured now.
@@forgottenrelics1197 yep. the credits order goes: first paragraph is genga (ka), second paragraph is nigen (2ka) and the third paragraph is sakkanhō (assistant ad) (beats me why Toei does credits like this, no one else does lol) Shintani is actually listed there too. Also, Ajay pointed out a few frames of the cut that you were analyzing with Goku kicking and punching, in the avan, that looks like yamamuro.
Don't forget the sound effect that used on this series. Finally they use the OG DBZ sound effect!! not the Super version. The kamehameha and supersaiyan transformation sound effect is really brings some good memories from the Z era.
I was not keen on this show when the news was released but in my opinion that was a perfect first episode and It looks like it’s gonna be really good
Hair highlights are very appealing now
yeah definitely an upgrade over Yamamuro's
Last time I came this early, my wife left me
Dog
Those DBZ flashbacks were PERFECT.. why can't the rest of the episode have that DBZ art style??
I was lowkey waiting for this video😂
Finally, no more weird blocky plastic super designs
Remember the “Legend” videos you used to make? You could end up making one for Kubota with the way the series is going 😂
i've legit been thinking about doing exactly that lol
@@forgottenrelics1197 Dude If you want, I could do the vid with you I have another channel where I draw Dragon Ball Art
When they did that shot where Gohan looks behind wit his head tilted & I saw the way they drew his mouth way up above his chin I knew so much soul & time & love & all the things that they put attention to detail even in the odd ways Tori drew some things sometimes that was like 1 of my fav shots jus for it givin me that specific realization lol. I'll say the most & really only disappointin part was the vegeta sacrifice thing. Tho then again none of the redone renditions of that scene game, anime, wutever have ever hit the same wit how that's handled. There's a couple things I could point to as for y it looks so good in the OG. Most of the redone scenes as u point out R handled diff but it's usually equally as good regardless of stylistic preference so that was jus eh to me bu comparison but it's def mot bad. I'm so excited for the rest of this. We alr had so many interestin nostalgic & jus generally incredible ppl on this that regardless if we get more ppl for specific scenes or eps or not the schedule means we eat good regardless. I'm so glad DB is back & it's debatably alr better than ever. This will be a fun journey on this channel too! ☺️
Fate/ Apocrypha music in the background, nice.
Thanks to Daima, AnimeAjay now has a new challenger.

Just notice that the Nyoi-Bo is already gone from below the lookout.
If you wanted to make a 3 hour long video going through the episode frame by frame I wouldn't mind
I LOVE YOR VIDEOS OMG
Yup animation and presentation wise daima pretty much cooked everything dragon ball had to offer so far except for dbs broly action scenes. And that was a full feature film production
One of my favorite cuts is the one with Majin Buu jumping around in the background through rocks. It’s completely animated on Ones and it looks so good and even a bit western. So odd to see something animated on ones in Japanese animation in that style
yes! that cut immediately caught my eye. hopefully we get proper confirmation on who animated it in time
I'm wondering if they just busted out the piggybank for this one episode like what happened with Uzumaki.
NAH G
Nah. Neither of these cases are about just putting money.
i thought they dished out MAPPA onto this with how good it looked
I hope they can keep up the quality.
