Very true. Trying to make it in one piece and making it a fast run are two things which are incredibly hard to pull off. The thrill is simply unmatched.
+1 for this! I know some people complain that some BeamNG cars (vanilla) are too fragile. Speaking from a lifetime of moderate daily driving to local autocross and rallycross, I feel like between the sim/rally choices, BeamNG makes me fear for my car much more like IRL. When an IRL spinout on a wet but otherwise normal pavement road curve at 25 mph (45 kph?) can cause $3000 damage and visibly camber a wheel from sideswiping a curb (as one of several personal examples), cars aren't that durable at some angles, at bicycle/faster speeds. I played the heck out of DR and DR2.0 (it helped indirectly prepare me for auto/rallycross later), Assetto Corsa, etc. I've never tried the more arcadey eye candy driving games. These games are all understandably intended to sell players a fantasy of being able to drive a car somewhat unsafely at high speeds. I have accidentally or deliberately yeeted my cars through corners and cuts that pinballed me hard, yet was still able to blithely carry on with my race with barely any steering damage. Not so in BeamNG. :D I can swap paint with other cars and guardrails. Ding some body panels, scrape off a bumper. I can even take a calculated gamble on driving straight over some smaller street curbs, gutters, or offroad corner shortcuts. But just like IRL, the game always forces me to seriously consider the calculus of reckless driving if my goal is to actually continue driving in a race.
@@dakaodo Fascinating. Perhaps rally cars aren't as fragile as beamNG's unofficial cars tend to be. Cherrier FCV for example. Even though it has a gravel and tarmac variant for rally, both tend to be overly fragile at times. But I do get the point, it is just using some base components and "rally" parts to make a version of said car, as opposed to having a proper purpose built rally car. I'm sure BeamNG devs can make this game into a proper rally sim.
First of all I like the overall presentation of this video of yours from the editing to the action with the thumbnail to match up with it! Right so about my actual thoughts… I’ve always thought that BeamNG Drive was more of a driving simulator sandbox with overly dramatic crash physics, than it being a racing game. 😅 But I can see what challenges it brings, especially when it comes to testing someone’s skills of pushing a rally car to its limit! It will be a tough call for having this game be in its place in the rally world of gaming… but it should be worth considering.
I have about 840 hours in this game. Maybe about 600 of them are purely rallying. It's my favourite motorsport and I will never get tired of it. The point is, I have 350 hours in EA WRC, 220 hours in DiRT Rally, and about 348 hours in DiRT Rally 2.0. And yes, those games are brilliant and I really like them but Beam just feels different and in some ways, better. In fact, me and my friend are currently developing a full on rally event in BeamMP. It's not ready yet, but it will include thirteen rallies with 8-15 custom stages made by me per rally, one rally per week, with full on stage maps, custom race files and lots of other preparations. Basically we want to make a rally event in BeamNG as functional as possible. Will be fun to see if it works out how we want it to.
I don't have a lot of hours in this game as I heavily invested in Dirt rally 2.0 prior to my introduction to RBR and this beautiful thing. I'd say beamNG is my pick as soon the pace notes get implemented. It is less frustrating to make a mistake in beam because the crashes are so good.. but I think some of the RBR tracks will forever be king, especially on the pavement side of things

@@darthsnape I did a 2 day session with the London Rally School in October and immediately got home and tried to recreate the sensations of driving the Escort MK2 in the dirt. BeamNG was the closest for me in terms of feel and the car behaved similar to the real thing. I spent a bit of time tuning the ETK-I to be as close to the escort as I could get it and haven't looked back since. I even started mapping out the London Rally School course so I could practice 😅 RBR, while awesome, was actually far too easy compared to my experience IRL. Sounds weird to describe RBR as "easy", but I guess everything is subjective in the end
@@darthsnape Probably the weight of the car overall. The car feels heavier in BeamNG. The clutch behaviour was also a little closer to real in BeamNG. Clutch-kicking to get extra momentum through a turn isn't really necessary in RBR in the Escort MK2, whereas it was incredibly useful in Beam and IRL
one of my favorite things about the beamng damage model is the subtle damage you get from driving too hard even if you dont crash. after a while of rough roads at high speed, most vehicles will have misaligned suspension, a damaged oil pan, ruined front shock+springs, etc.. it forces you to have mechanical sympathy, especially in older or cheaper models
Great video! Agree that both are good, maybe one day BeamNG will be the best rally sim. Also I love the little jokes too, like "may the downforce be with you"
There are some co-driver pacenotes mod because the default one isn't that good. Modding is super simple, just moving folders. For co-driver mods I recommend Nicky Grist voice (Luppis pacenotes). For cars, you really don't have to anything, the team adds a bunch of cars. You cannot add any cars like in BeamNG. For track, once again, everything is in the game. Some beginner friendly stages are Chirdonhead, or Frazier wells. Car Setup can be done in the game, but I'm not much of a setup guy. I have enough trouble handling it in default tune.
@ I always have driving assists turned off since that’s how I have it in AC and when I first got the game I just configured it that way. But I also have tried to configure my brake pedal as well as my other pedals, I don’t know if the settings for the pedals are good or not.
@V1c._. BeamnNG takes every part of the car into account. From make, to the type of part being used. Not saying AC is not a sim, but BeamNG is a proper sim, though not a proper rally/circuit racing one yet. Try a little bit of tuning maybe. Braking force, bias, etc etc. It might help.

I spent a bit of time tuning the ETK-I to be as close to the escort as I could get it and haven't looked back since. I even started mapping out the London Rally School course so I could practice 😅
RBR, while awesome, was actually far too easy compared to my experience IRL. Sounds weird to describe RBR as "easy", but I guess everything is subjective in the end
@@DavidDyball What was it about beamNG that felt so close? Was it the behaviour of the tail?
@@darthsnape Probably the weight of the car overall. The car feels heavier in BeamNG. The clutch behaviour was also a little closer to real in BeamNG. Clutch-kicking to get extra momentum through a turn isn't really necessary in RBR in the Escort MK2, whereas it was incredibly useful in Beam and IRL
@@DavidDyball This is the sort of input community needs. Thank you very much for sharing this David!
one of my favorite things about the beamng damage model is the subtle damage you get from driving too hard even if you dont crash. after a while of rough roads at high speed, most vehicles will have misaligned suspension, a damaged oil pan, ruined front shock+springs, etc.. it forces you to have mechanical sympathy, especially in older or cheaper models
That's the charm of beamNG. I guess something similar would happen if I'd drive like that irl.
may the down force be with you is a killer line
I know right?😉
As someone who likes sim games, this is a pretty good analysis. 👍🏻
Thank you!
Great video! Agree that both are good, maybe one day BeamNG will be the best rally sim. Also I love the little jokes too, like "may the downforce be with you"
Let’s hope beamNG would be out of beta by then.
Hey, What are the best mods to start with RBR for someone who has never played it? Cars, tracks, setup?
There are some co-driver pacenotes mod because the default one isn't that good. Modding is super simple, just moving folders. For co-driver mods I recommend Nicky Grist voice (Luppis pacenotes).
For cars, you really don't have to anything, the team adds a bunch of cars. You cannot add any cars like in BeamNG.
For track, once again, everything is in the game. Some beginner friendly stages are Chirdonhead, or Frazier wells.
Car Setup can be done in the game, but I'm not much of a setup guy. I have enough trouble handling it in default tune.
@@darthsnape thank you sir
I want to enjoy beamng but I can’t configure the brakes at all, they constantly just lock up on me. Anyone else have this issue?
Have you checked if the ABS in on realistic instead of off?
@ I always have driving assists turned off since that’s how I have it in AC and when I first got the game I just configured it that way. But I also have tried to configure my brake pedal as well as my other pedals, I don’t know if the settings for the pedals are good or not.
@V1c._. BeamnNG takes every part of the car into account. From make, to the type of part being used. Not saying AC is not a sim, but BeamNG is a proper sim, though not a proper rally/circuit racing one yet.
Try a little bit of tuning maybe. Braking force, bias, etc etc. It might help.
@@darthsnape I was looking into this, thank you for the help
I find it hard to set up simagic for beamng
Where lies the issue?
@ with wheel rotation speed 0 i think it doesn’t self steer fast enough but with WRS it doesn’t feel natural and it is oscillating
its really good but the tire pysics are obsolete
