Why are there no sync kills? Because sync kills add something to a good game, and nothing to a bad one
Why are the super soldiers marines squishy? Because they have to be in an RTS Because your basic infantry has to die in mass.
Why is angelos hulk? He's not he just has a single dumb abylity.
Why is the graphics cartoony? They aren't.
Where are the other factions? It had no support post launch and only dropped with one less faction then the other games.
Why were they trying to be a moba? they weren't Mobas would give you snow ball mechanics and have it so the most important thing in the game is making sure your elite units level up and take the advantage when your enemy is occupied or dead. The reason people call it a MOBA is because they were popular for a little while and people love buzzwords

Gotta say i disagree with the whole 'we should have supported it more' thing at the end. If a business makes this many mistakes and fundamentally did not get it's target audience at all it shows a lack of basic marketing principles or even game direction. Dawn of war 3 deserved to fail due to inept development, bad business practise and the game at it's core was completely different to anything before it. From the gameplay to the story and everything inbetween.

Besides, series like, Breath of the Wild, Call of Duty WWII, and God of War (For the PS4) are rehashed from games like Horizon Zero Dawn, Any Call of Duty game, and Dark Souls respectively, and people still flock to and love them. The first 40k content I can remember was when my mom bought Space Hulk for my Panasonic 3D0, because in her words, "you like Alien, and freaky space shit, so I thought you might like this. It looks kinda wierd and cool". I remember it being such a novel thing to see what looked like space-templars in power armor. I had to know more! And it was before the internet and wikipedia was a thing, so all I could do was ask anyone who might know more. I became obsessed with reading any material I could find about this strange universe. Not a single thing about the wold of 40k is good - its all dark, hopeless, and otherworldly. It's that history of nothing but violence and hardship that makes it stand apart from other fictional worlds. It takes everything I love about dark sci-fi and dark fantasy, mixes them together, then turns it upside down and shoves a pint of human history up its ass. Seeing Dawn of War sacrifice the grit and authenticity in order to pull in people who dont know what 40k is, its just such a fucked up move. This entire universe and all its lore is a god damned work of art, and that work of art includes GRIT and DIRT and BATTLE SCARS !!!

Its really weird and make me sad for the future that they are pulling this shit now that warhammer has become "popular". Are we already loosing the grim dark ? :(

An important thing to understand that so many improvements of DOW3 were driven by the community. Posts providing advice and improvements were prolific. All the while moderators of DOW3 forums were abusive, angry and condescending towards the fan base. Improvements that were adopted from the community were not the same as advised and by the end of the development some members of the community felt they had made a major investment of time in assisting in the development of the game. Just prior to release all the changes the community had advised were deleted and negative comments were deleted. Suddenly the developers wanted to pretend the ideas were all there's. Many members of the community retained hostility from this and their failure to implement obviously beneficial, and perceived financially worthwhile changes on the games release. Added this to many lies by the company and its representatives and some community members being banned for overly criticising the game, and defending themselves against abusive moderators and this game never had the support they could have. Also its worth noting that the community had to fight to ensure you could even have customisable army colors for characters and super heavies in multiplayer because they intended to sell only preformed color schemes.
Also the payed-for review from PC Gamer that stated that this was the game the 40k community had been asked for was widely mocked especially considering this was during the alpha stage (and that stage the game looked awful). The community said the graphics needed improvement, and they were told it needed to appear that way to reduce latency in multiplayer or something. Eventually however the community was so aggressive in their commitment to force changes that the developers capitulated and improved the graphics.

My main complaint in the art department was how the maps looked.
It all felt like a carefully crafted stage, not an organic location. The maps in the first game, although low res, kept the ilusion for me, somehow. The maps in 2 reminded me a lot of Company of Heroes, the maps there actually lokked like normal places where it just so happens that world ending battle takes place. The maps in 3 felt like battle arenas. The ground was too perfect, no building or ruin was accessible, no evident way from where the forces on the field might have come. Just a video game arena. It totally broke my illusion.

i got 1400 hours on Dawn of War 2. I unlocked basically everything there was to unlock for every faction. Completed the campaigns multiple times. I loved this game so much. I think i played this more than Dawn of War 1 which i loved equally, but the strategy and the tactics you could set with your troops in DoW2 was really great, the cover system worked, everything worked. Sure, some units were more powerful than others but you could find a way; when it comes to multiplayer, the community always found a way to counter this and that.
Then Dawn of War 3 released: played 3,9 hours. A RTS Warhammer 40k game that was boring: that's plain incredible and to my disappointment (and to others too) Dawn of War franchise died. I'm sorry but i'm not feeling responsible for DoW3 failure because it was not a good game, plain and simple.

What really, really stuck out to me was the voice acting. For example, the orcs had ZERO effects on them to make them sound deeper and...orcier. They just sounded like a guy trying to sound gruff and it was laughable. The Space Marine filters were also terrible. It feels as though this game was made by entirely new people who had not had a hand in the previous ones, perhaps in combination with CEO meddling and a toxic work environment where you can't question decisions.

The dude that voices a lot of the orks just straight up sounds like that - no "filters" are involved. The writing is classic ork stuff, too.

I feel like going with a cartoony, generic look in order to widen the playerbase was a HUGE miscalculation. One of the reasons why, IMO, DoW1 and DoW2 were succesful was that they both had a pretty unique feel and style that drew people into the games, into the lore, some even into the hobby. DOW3 looks almost insultingly generic, I can't imagine I would develop an interest for this game if it was the first title in the series I came across.

    • @Oroberus
      @Oroberus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

The cartoony, generic look was just one symptom, while "widening the playerbase", or just plain greed, was the disease.
      - The pivot into a more moba-style
      - The flashing-oh-shiny-art direction
      - They was, way, WAAAAYYY smaller battles sizes/unit numbers
      - The way, way, WAAAAYYY smaller map with the overpronounced mini map
      - Terminator-Summer-Saults
      - The mega-cringy marketing/interviews (srsly, NOONE at GW would have greenlit those ... you want on-spot 40k marketing? Paul Barnett ... while Funcom and EA royally fucked Age Of Reckoning up, Paul was THE marketing GOD for 40k-PC-gaming*)
This was done to go for the most promising trends, most intrigueing/fun looking experience and lowest skill floor as possible, to trigger more non-40k players while hoping to also trigger the MOBA-crowd.
Relic(management) wholeheartedly said: Fuck the licence, fuck the IP, fuck the fanbase, we want more sales, we don't fucking care, do it!
GW (probably) had way more of a hands-off apporach on DOW3 then they had with 1 and 2, as those were both very positively acclaimed games, which really furthered the IP itself, so they probably said "Okay, the usual guys are doing it, we don't have to sit on it all the time, they'll be fine" ... yeah ... they should have kept the leash way shorter :(
*EDIT: Thinking about it ... the Titan/'Robot' Joke of the voice actress ... Paul would have been - "Dude ... man-bro I just ... woah ... It's a fucking giant mega mech suite and I'm slashing ripping smashing everything it'S so whoahh and then due it's all explosion ans huge minigusn and ... I can't even ... woah!" and he would have sounded 100% legit, believable and geniunely enjoing himself *g*

@@Oroberus And that's the thing, you can change things up like how Dawn of War 2 was different from 1, but there was a coherent vision aimed at creating a good 40k game. I mean, Relic made Spacemarine, too, which is an entirely different type of game.
Something in or around Relic drastically changed, at the very least somewhere higher up. It seems likely that THQ going bankrupt played a big part in the DoW III debacle. Also, considering a lot of other Warhammer titles, GW may not really have cared but I'm not sure when we started seeing all those throwaway titles exactly.
I do have to say I don't care at all that some voice actor or actress doesn't know much about the lore unless knowing more would have helped them do their job. Paul was a PR guy.. it's more the fault of Relic for piling on gaffe after gaffe. I'm sure if the rest of the early previews had been more positive most people would've let it slide. But the fact it was shown in the first place/done that way can be another indicator of flawed direction/management.She seemed to have enjoyed doing her part; it couldn't have been that hard to make it come across positively regardless of her familiarity with 40k.

Nah, graphics were the least of the issue except for certain units... i mean the graphics were serviceable.
The problem was that it was a downgrade even when compared to DOW1, not even talking about DOW2 when it comes to the tactical level of the game.
No cover system effectively. No chokepoints except for a few destructible covers.
No real unit customization, here dow1 was really amazing.
Campaign story was ok/ serviceable; but nothing compared to the original dow1 which had amazing arcline and plot.
Campagin pacing was sluggish, artificially slowed down.
Gabriel Angelos went from an icon to a celebrity basically. His new looks were terrible.
The hero system is a cheap after thought, nothing as good as previous.
Very limited and stale multiplayer, no reason to play it actually. Badly thought out multiplayer actually, dow1 was amazing there even if I admittedly liked dow2 more.
      Only 3 factions on launch.
Hyped up, but the game provided us nothing.
Needless to continue. I guess well be without a good w40k rts for a while, but to put it shorted, Gladius makes a better job at both being a strategy game, and a w40k game, and that was made by an indie studio, unlike big daddy Relic, who many of us loved a lot, even tho lately they are on the weaker side. Gladius is turn based though.
Joe said it nicely: like a 3rd person action game. And thats the problem. The game wants to be everything, and ultimately ends up being mediocre at best i all aspects. The game is a jack-of-all, master of none. Hence its mediocrity. But after DoW1-2, COH1-2 (although admittedly CoH2 came with its own shortcomings and faults still unresolved to this day imho, when compared to CoH1), and Homeworld1-2, we would expect more from Relic than just a mediocre game.

Sure, there were heroes but you never relied on them to carry your army by themselves. DoW1's campaign ends with you bringing everything you can to bear on a Deamon Prince: Predators, Lands Rairders, Terminators, Dreadnoughts, the whole shebang, all to kill a single powerful enemy. Even DoW2 (specifically DoW2 Retribution), with it's focus on heroes, makes you use every unit at your chosen factions disposal to kick Kyras' teeth in at the end of the campaign. I personally played it for many years, last time being around 2-3 years ago, and it still had +100k players playing EACH day, and people created new custom maps/campaigns on a regular basis. Not to mention that the competitive scene thrived for many years. How on earth can you possibly think that equals a low playerbase?

It's like the disparity between the campaigns in DOW2 versus the skirmish modes. The campaigns are boring, heavily linear slogs filled with slow engagements that are a tutorial for the skirmish mechanics, while the skirmish itself is fast, fun and requires constant attention. Dawn of War 3 is the campaign to Warcraft 3's skirmish.

Honestly, I think Gorgutz was the one redeeming takeaway from this game. His OG model was just a stand-in for Ghazghul and I think his DoW3 glowup was a perfecr fit for him.
Gorgutz is a schemer, a rare and dangerous ork who uses underhanded tactics. The mere thought of Gorgut using his grappling arm to get further into battle, swinging it around to block some incoming fire and hit 'umies. Hell, I just wanted him to have a Sync kill of him grappling a Space Marine just to spin him around and slam him into the ground or just yeet him 50 meters away. And it is fitting since every Gorgutz fight has him retreating to fight another day, meaning a grappling claw for escaping is the perfect tool.
Sadly, I require a 3d printer for this sculpt because GW won't do it themselves and take my money for a Forgeworld Gorgutz and Bludflagg

Good video. The points were pretty spot on, though I do want to point out one thing about the campaign that I feel lots of people either don't notice, or just don't point out. The base story is literally a worse version of Vanilla DOW 1's story. Let's run through some things both have in common.
Both start off with an Ork invasion of an Imperium planet with the Blood Ravens coming in to help out.
Both have an Inquisitor that is reluctant to help Angelos.
Both feature some sort of artifact that some factions are chasing after.
Both feature a planet with a sealed Daemon that is released thanks to sacrifices from all of the battles.
Both have a team-up between Xeno forces and Space Marines in the final level.
It's the extra details filling the blanks between is what makes DOW 3's story more bland and annoying.

    • @PonchaYT
      @PonchaYT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Maybe that's why it felt so stale as it was just a revamp of the first game story.
I'm glad you pointed that out as it definitely is something to miss when playing. I
guess they were hoping for a lot of new players to come to the game so having a similar story would not be much of a problem but they missed out on their key player base who were the ones who played the first game.

Why not have Angelos as chapter master and directing a new commander? Why have Gorgutz demoted back to square one? Why have a daemon as the end boss yet again? What a waste.

@@N3r0ThlHeavyMetal Do not want to be rude, but while you are right that some of those points can be applied to plenty of other 40k games, There are no others that i know of that follow all of them in that exact order in one story.
Dawn of War 2, with all of its expansions, would meet at least 4 and maybe 5 if looked at the right way, but comparing 3 campaigns to 1 isn't that fair. When doing just vanilla Dawn of War vs any of the single Dawn of War 2 campaigns, you'd have at most 2 shared points, which I feel is more acceptable.
Space Marine also only shares 2 of the points, the 1st and 3rd to be precise. It does have an inquisitor in the game, but Drogan, for story reasons, mostly assists Titus' with recovering the mcguffin of the game. There's also no sealed daemon whatsoever and there's no team-up between the Orks(the only xenos in the game) and Space Marines, especially since Titus kills the Warboss.
If you only meant that some of those points can be applied to other 40k games, then yes, I totally agree and apologize. If there is one thing I feel, it's that story writers for 40k games can be a little stagnant in their main plots.

Base building is a good feature on wide open maps (strategy)
Lanes are a good feature for concentrated management (tactics)
I'm not saying you can't combine the two, but you need to have a humble approach and respect that open massive battles are the highlight dawn of war and fast paced tactics are the highlight of dawn of war 2. Encumber the player with base building you water down the tactics and take away the large massive open range maps you take away the strategic options that come with having a massive army. I liked the concept of CnC generals to give you ample freedom in using abilities not being dependant on where your commander is. That way you can have the large open maps and not rock paper scissors hoping your cannon fodder doesn't run into their commander or have your hands tied cause your commander is bumbling around somewhere else

As someone who grew up with the 2nd edition 40k art and models i kinda loved the more saturated colours on the unit models. Now that doesn't excuse bad fx design causing confusion in big battles. A grimdark setting doesn't have to have a grimdark colour palette

I never played the game though, I never bought it, so I couldn't agree with the mechanics or what I thought did or didn't work, I just watched and listened to you breaking them down, and I was thinking 'ah, I see', and learning.
And I was right there with you until minute 34:20.
    And... No.
You think people should've done more to support the game? No!
No, I didn't buy it because I didn't want to reward this. I LOVE 40k, I love 40k games, and when I saw this and read the early reviews, I realised that I this was a seemingly deliberate step in the wrong direction. If I and ten thousand others had just blindly bought in then our complaints wouldn't matter! It'd be like people protesting Apple's predatory practises,
    Sent from my Iphone
It was the developers every step of the way who sank the game, so I don't think it's fair to blame the player base for not supporting this trainwreck. Let the people who loved this game and direction - and there are loads of them - lament the lack of support, but ultimately 40k RTS games have a pretty huge player-base, it's not on us if Relic and others shoot themselves in the foot trying to find us.

The question of whose fault it is, when a game fails, is a tricky one: For example, WH40k Eternal Crusade. Eternal Crusade is not bad, but........
    - The devs made HUGE promises of units and game-modes (e.g. a campaign...) which would be added post-launch. Then after launch, with MAJOR content missing and the game still being nothing but a generic lobby-shooter, the number of devs was reduced from 100 to 2.
    - Then a vicious cycle set in: The devs kept lying to the community (especially the lead developer), players left, wait-times in the lobby increased, more players left, the maps that required huge amounts of players to work got deleted, players left, the devs stopped talking to the community entirely, players left...
Nowadays, Eternal Crusade only has enough active players world-wide for one SINGLE lobby-shooter match at a time... if you are lucky.

    • @PonchaYT
      @PonchaYT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Seems like you should make the fall of eternal crusade video. I would do it myself but I feel I don't know enough to make it. I did play eternal crusade but I was not around for the start of it and have only heard bits here and there about why it failed.

    • @pinky6758
      @pinky6758 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@PonchaYT There are so many videos about Eternal Crusade out there.
Basically, the story goes like this:
      * The first lead developer, Miguel Caron, promised an open-world WH40k game with huge battles. Turned out that the studio didn't have the budget for that. Miguel left and in came Nathan Richardsson.
      * Nathan promised a 3rd-person shooter MMORPG with an ongoing campaign in the background, controlled by the devs and narrated and supplemented by novels written by the famed Graham McNeill. Oh, and it would come to PC, Xbox and Playstation.
      * The first item that was dropped was the bikes/trikes, because the devs had no idea how to incorporate those into the gameplay.
      * Up next, during open Beta, the devs made maps that would be unplayable as a Walker, effectively killing off Dreadnoughts before they even had a chance to enter the game.
      * Then the devs decided to waste precious time and money on using an outdate game-engine and harebrained ideas like pico-servers.
      * Then, while all was crumbling around them and the devs tried to make do with what little they had, Nathan promised Terminators and Titans to the player-community. He said that implementing Terminators would take 3 months and that it would be the first update after launch.
      * Time goes on. Very little gets done. The publisher Bandai pressures Behaviour Interactive into finally releasing the game so that FINALLY some money can get made.
      * The game launches. No campaign-system whatsoever, no background-story, no novels, no Terminators. (And a ridiculously OP Eldar grav-tank.) Behaviour immediately pulls out all staff from Eternal crusade, except for 20 devs, and puts them into another game.
      * The months roll around and Nathan silently scratches the Terminators, instead promising ever-more complicated campaign-systems. (He admits that he ACTUALLY meant that Terminators take 3 months to develop if he has 100 devs at hand doing NOTHING else. Yes, the lead-developer thought that not only would he get to keep his full team after launch, he also thought that there would be NO bug-fixes and patches after game-launch.)
      * The months roll around and Nathan silently scratches the campaign-system.
      * At about this point, the number of devs is reduced from 20 to 2 devs + a PR guy.
      * The months roll around and Nathan gracefully offers to the player-community to finish the game for Behaviour Interactive for free. You work for Behaviour Interactive for free and Behaviour Interactive owns the full copyright of anything you make for EC. There will be a modding-workshop! We get to design the campaign-system! We get to invent characters and narrative and background-story of Eternal Crusade and get to write the lore!
      * The months roll around and it turns out that all the while Nathan promised the player-community to give the game into their hands, while he promised that he was preparing EC for a great rebirth in the background, he had been applying for another job and secretly left.
      * At about this point, the devs finally manage to solve the OP problem with the Eldar grav-tank.
      * The devs stop talking to the player-community entirely. The forum goes dead, as the player-community moves to Discord. Then the devs decide to come back and join the player-community on Discord.
      * The devs add some crappy maps and some cosmetics nobody cares about to the game.
      * Then some hackers find a way around the anti-cheating software of EC and nowadays the game is so overrun with blatant cheaters that it's barely playable.
      * Nowadays, the active player-base is 200 people over the course of 24 hours. You need 30 people at a time for a full match. If you don't schedule your play-time to coincide with the clans, your wait-time between matches ranges from 30 minutes to infinity. Just playing the game for fun anytime you want, that has become impossible.
