I had the honor of knowing James Best and his wife Dorothy in Hickory NC where they lived. I choreographed Dorothy in "White Christmas" and James had a painting he did, auctioned on opening night. He was an extremely talented artist and actor.

I remember hearing or reading long ago that he'd done a lot of Shakespeare. Never confirmed if it was true or not, but he does made a Shakespearean reference in this that seems out-of-character for the part he was playing.

Love this thriller, cast and crew does such a great job on minimal budget with the exception of the unfortunate clichéd fridging of Best's employee. To this day, Ken Curtis' freak out while calling the ending is still one of cinema's greatest, "...you'll cover me, but who'll cover you! *slap* It'd take a tank to get us out of here!" Great pacing and highly rewatchable.

Beautiful quality print..thank you! I was a little girl and saw the trailer for when it first came out, at the local Saturday Morning Matinee. I begged wuth futility for my mother to let me go, and she was steadfast in her no. I understand now, it was adult in a way not too healthy for a little girl - the sleazy love tangle. I finally saw it on a Friday night TV horror host show in Houston when I was in high school. Most excellent example of the B movie classic.

This isn't such a bad little movie.
The dark and grainy quality in which it was filmed gives it a genuine sense of atmosphere and dread while the very idea of being trapped inside a relatively small building (on an island, no less) by a pack of voracious animals who want to eat you so badly that they're willing to chew through the walls to get to you is kind of terrifying.
The survivors solution to the problem is pretty clever....and would be a claustrophobic and nerve-wracking thing to have to do if you found yourself in that particular situation.

@Chuck Bible Yep, he did many Westerns and yep that is "Festus". James has been in many fine movies with many fine big name actors. He's been in some great comedies, etc, too. One of his eeriest performances, to me at least, is his turn in 3 Twilight Zone episodes. I don't know if they are on here but one is called "Jess-Belle". I had nightmares about this one for a long time.
Another little seen movie is called "Shock Corridor". Really well done film. Very worth a watch.

This is one of those peculiar old B&W horror flicks I've developed an obsession with. I know this silly masterpiece so well I know virtually every single thing about it. It's wierd I suppose, it's like some kind of escape or something. I feel like I'm actually on the island with those people. The whole thing is kinda wierd cause when I saw this as a little kid I was truly terrified. That dash to the beach underneath what I'd always remembered as garbage cans really horrified me for some reason. 🐀

They just played this on Svengoolie and I loved it. Not overly cheesy and given what they had to work with I think the cast and crew ended up with a fun movie that takes itself *just* seriously enough.

I love the Oldie B&W movies. Cheesy or not, it's a classic.
The plot starts out slow but they need to get us ready for an attack. Ken is kinda out of character as a back-shooter. James is doing well.
Svengoolie should play more of these and less of dracula stuff. I'm sure this rental is within his budget.

James Best (1926 - 2015) had a long and prolific career not just as an actor but also as a composer/singer. He is best remembered for playing the bumbling Sheriff Rosco P Coltrane in The Dukes of Hazzard (1979 - 1985). The sequel to this movie The Return of The Killer Shrews was made an extraordinary 54 years later in 2012 and starred John Schneider and Rick Hurst, Best's acting colleagues in The Dukes of Hazzard. The movie, although very B Grade and even amateurish was a considerable commercial success getting $1 million plus at the box officer for a total production budget of about $123,000.

All of the grown ups left to eat out or something. My mean cousin made my brother and I watch a movie. Scared me to death. After 50 years, all that I could remember was a disembodied hand crawling on a car seat. After much searching I found it here. One of the dumbest movies that I've ever seen. It's comical.
