THE LAST LAMBS LEFT. (analyzing results of some bottom-end lambs...): Vlog 242

  • Tuesday was another weigh day for our market lambs...
But these are the bottom end lambs in the September group that are now at the 5 month mark, which means, they get sold at the weight they are at...
I thought I would sit down and actually analyze their results to show you how bad (or not bad) these lambs do!
Wednesday I attempted to load them alone.
    I should have waited.
    You'll see.

I used to babysit toddlers during the service at a church on Sunday mornings. When they were dropped off, if one started wailing for mom then they all would. It was like they were trying to see who could be the loudest. That's what this video reminded me of. 😂😂😂😂😂

They really aren't ever too loud, it's actually funny to hear a random screaming "MMEEEEEEEEEEEHH" , your voice overcomes all of their volume smoothly without having trouble understanding what you're saying.

Yeah the screamer! It's amazing at how each sheep has a different "voice" some of which are rather unpleasant. Some sing a beautiful song. I'd bet if we had to hear the sheep everyday, we would be driven crazy.
Like working at Wal Mart and you have to hear the same blasted music on a short loop. Especially if it's country music and you like death metal!

Sandi, I just wanted to let you know that I have enjoyed everyone of your videos. I have never even been on a farm. I have no idea how I got here, but it has been a fascinating ride. I started somewhere in the middle, got so involved I had to go back to the beginning of your videos, which wasn’t all that easy, since I couldn’t get them to play in order. You are one amazing woman and never sell yourself short. Anytime you don’t think you are doing great, look where you came from. There is video evidence 😁take a look and you also will be amazed. From a real city girl. Farming is really back breaking hard work. Thanks for the experience 😘

We were 3 girls. I'm the eldest. I'm 6 years older than the next and 13 years older than the last. My little sister was only 3 when I left for college. I repeated history with 1 girl and 2 boys. Daughter eldest, 6 years first son, 14 years older than the baby. At one particular moment in time, we had one in postgrad, one in the military, and one in middle school. It's like having 3 only children, just the way I grew up.

You're showing us all of the farming life, and who wouldn't want it any other way? Not Me!!! You make every day complete, whether it's a new upload, or I rewatch some older ones. i MUST get some of you and sheep in my daily life!! I've told you this almost daily now, lol, are you sick of hearing it yet??? From one Canadian to another, I hate the snow as much as you do!! I'm in Newfoundland and we get hit HARD, and each storm attacks me with massive migraine peaks, but you always help me through them ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Thank you Sandi, for everything you do for yourself, your family, your farm, and your sheep!

After hearing the weights on the quints, I would ask that you reconsider your method of removing the one or two who “eat best” to reduce the drag down effect on the ewe. Instead take the smallest/weakest/runt to bottle baby lounge. The dominant born will do much better on mum, and the bottle babies (with special care/attention) because of less bullying, artificial heating, more constant feeding will typically outperform what they would have done staying with mom.. There is research/history to back this. Would love to tell u about this special litter, but alas story too long. I believe this change in methodology is one of those small things you can do to improve your goals this year. Only trying to help, gl

A few thoughts to make loading easier. Especially when by yourself. Can you lightly bed the chute to break up shadows. The bedding can then be tossed in an active pen and not wasted. Also, can you bribe with grain. Even if that means having them on just hay for the few hours to a day prior to loading. I worked on a family run sheep farm for a few years and those sheep would follow a pail over a cliff in the hopes of getting another morsel of sweet goodness.

    Hi again SANDI
You did it without help!! Yay!! That's a tough task by yourself. I've decided after watching for a long while the best thing to do when there's chaos going on is to keep calm focus on the problem and work thru it. Otherwise I can tell how easy it would be to panic and want to give up lose it or both! Calm in the storm especially when those lambs start their loud yelling and screaming.
You really do such a great job Sandi! Hang in there! You can do whatever!!!!!

I love your analyses of your crop going to market. You have a very nice handle on your production. I know it's hard work and you are so kind with the lambs and maintain your goals. I hope you understand how much you are appreciated by an old animal handler and others who learn from your videos. I've seen so much done wrong in the old days and have left several animal jobs as I felt I cared more about the animals than the owner. I use to block out the weaning kid noises also. Once again, kudos to you.

An upgrade for the weeaning barn could be some strong overhead lighting at the handling end that you turn on when processing sheep. Like have alot of small lights directly above to theres zero shadows no matter the angle.

Love your content!!!! I was thinking that if you take horse stall mats and cut them to the general size of each fence of your shoots, drill holes in each corner of the mat to clip or tie the mats to your fencing. I was thinking a large karabiner clip would be quick and easy to install over and over. Hopefully the horse stall mats will durably narrow your shoots, but they can be layered depending on the lamb’s size. Every time I see you struggle with the shoot size I holler to you from California, “You need stall mats and karabiners!” LOL! Keep up the good work! Best wishes 🐑

Hey Sandi, I love your videos. I know your frustration with trying to move lambs 🙄 But did you know that the Marweld system races allow you to narrow the bottom so that the lambs have a hard time turning around? That's what the extra holes are for at the bottom of those spacers. Just tilt the bottoms in and put the rod through. Hope that helps!

I am fairly certain she has shown doing that in a previous video.. I’m not a farmer but does seem like it would help!

Although you do show comparison shots of a few special lambs, I would love to see a video showing more little lambies comparing them from birth (as much as you are allowed to show, at least) to weaning. I know it is a lot of trouble, but so many of them become quite special to many of us.

I thought you handled them very well and your dog was anxious to herd them

I love your videos!!! I just had my first leicester longwool lambs (twin rams... 😂) and it’s interesting to see the process in production vs. conservation.

Man that was rough watching you load by yourself. I wanted to get in there and help so bad. I did have to laugh at the one trying to go under the walls. I was frustrated at the one who kept trying to turn round and was getting stuck. The herd instinct in sheep is crazy. 🤤🤤

I wish I lived near you. I would love to come and help. You should offer working vacations for city folk who want a day of labor on the farm. You did a great job. I would have had to turn off the camera because I'd be dropping the f bomb a few times.
