Composers: Anton Stepanovich Arensky, Alexander Borodin, Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov, Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Sergei Ivanovich Taneyev
Artist: The Moscow Trio, Vladimir Ivanov (violin), Mikhail Utkin (cello), Alexander Bonduriansky (piano)
This 3-disc collection showcases Russian piano trios from the mid-nineteenth to early-twentieth centuries. Piano trios were unheard of for Russian composers until Mikhail Glinka wrote one in 1832; it earned the epithet ‘Pathétique’ as it seemed to be a reflection of Glinka’s general sadness at the time of writing, the piece alternating between caustic tension and attempts at light-hearted optimism. A mournful, melancholic influence then became characteristic of the Russian piano trio: Tchaikovsky unknowingly created a tradition when he composed his offering in 1882 - one of his greatest chamber works and which he dedicated to his recently deceased and much-missed friend Nikolay Rubinstein. On several subsequent occasions, piano trios were written as memorials.
The collection also includes the mathematically-governed trio of Sergey Taneyev, who had gained a reputation as a cerebral composer, and the trio of Rimsky-Korsakov, whose mastery of opera and vocal writing can be seen in the final movement as each instrument takes on its own ‘voice’ and emotion - thus resembling an interaction between characters. Alexander Borodin used the Classical model for his trio, although it contains surprising chromaticism as well as dramatic changes of temperament, including the tragic hymn in the second movement. Anton Arensky’s take on the genre completes the collection.
The Moscow Piano Trio was formed in 1976 and has achieved huge success in international competitions, notably winning the Maurice Ravel Gold Medal at the Bordeaux ‘Mai Musical’. The trio is comprised of pianist Alexander Bonduriansky, violinist Vladimir Ivanov and cellist Mikhail Utkin.

Jeez Tchaikovsky, almost an hour long piano trio (Beginning piece)! I've seen trios go up to 30 minutes, but almost an hour...makes one wonder what emotions went through his mind to create such a lengthy masterpiece.

His longtime dear friend, N. Rubinstein, was dying and Tchaikovsky tried to get to him in Paris. Rubinstein died before he could get there, and he became seriously despondent. Nikolai Rubinstein was one of the great pianists of that era, so Tchaikovsky poured all of his emotions and memories into a piano trio that is really a requiem of sorts. It features a demanding piano part that is befitting the virtuosity of his late friend.

Because Rachmaninov’s trios are played very often in the West, but His music is still a rarity in Russia since his abrupt departure after the Bolshevik revolution.

@@stonefireice6058 Your assumptions are very far from reality. Despite the fact that Rachmaninoff went abroad, in the USSR he was perceived as a "classic". It was popular among music lovers and professionals. In the USSR, Rachmaninoff's music was performed by pianists: J. Flier, E. Gilels, K. Igumnov, S. Richter, conducted by: N. Golovanov, A. Gauck, E. Svetlanov, etc. His music was played on the radio, records were released. My relative played Rachmaninoff at the final exam at the conservatory.

@@user-sx3wy7mh9g sure, he was known and played by connoisseurs, but by the general public he was barely known. He was a scorned musician. That’s why he wasn’t invited to the USSR to perform, amid many pleas of musicians. American public has loved him from the beginning and his music has been front and center of classical masterpieces.

@@stonefireice6058 What you are writing about happened in 1931 - Rachmaninov, along with other emigrants, signed an appeal to the US government not to buy Soviet goods. In response to this, his music was no longer performed in the USSR, but not for long. The Russian public fell in love with him as a pianist and composer long before he became known (more as a pianist) in Europe and the USA. Rachmaninov was loved before the revolution, and no one forgot him after the revolution. Starting in 1941, Rachmaninoff transferred all concert fees to the USSR Consulate in New York for the needs of the Red Army in the war with Germany. He wrote: “From one of the Russians, feasible help to the Russian people in the struggle against the enemy. I want to believe, I believe in complete victory! " After the victory at Stalingrad, Rachmaninov wrote to Stalin: “... now I am sure that my Motherland will defeat the aggressors. I am also delighted that despite the hardest trials the musical culture of the struggling Russia, including the Russian people, continues to amaze the world, is alive and developing in every possible way. I am ready to agree that we were probably wrong in the early 1920s, believing that Russian art is doomed to destruction ... ”Rachmaninoff was going to return to Russia. The Rachmaninovs' estate in Ivanovka (Tambov region) was repaired for him. In March 1943, a concert dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Rachmaninov was broadcast on Soviet radio.
