The apparently innate Russian genius for composing soulful melodies, combined with the influence of 200 years of Russian ballet, has resulted in a repertoire of dramatic and opulent scores. Opera, symphonies, concertos, songs and chamber works from Russian composers are all infused with the spirit of Mother Russia - her suffering, her dramatic and eventful history, her people and their way of life.
This collection of heartfelt adagios includes famous excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty, and Glazunov’s Raymonda, Prokoviev’s Cinderella and the famous adagio from Spartacus by Khachaturian.
There are some rarer pieces as well - Rimsky-Korsakov’s Nocturne ‘Moonlight’ from his opera Pan Voyevoda and Khrennikov’s Hussar Ballad, as well as the wistful slow movement from Miaskovsky’s last symphony (No.27), written after he had been denounced by Stalin’s henchmen as being guilty of ‘Western Formalism’ (a charge levelled by Khrennikov). Miaskovsky composed this work as he was ill with the cancer that would eventually kill him, and through it he harks back to the Russia of Tchaikovsky’s music - a nostalgic and dignified farewell in the face of Stalin’s tyrannical ignorance.

You don't have to be Russian to love these errs. My mother loved ballet and the first music I heard on disc was Tchaikovsky. Yippee for Russian composers.
I grew up with Tchaikovsky, and fell in love with ballet... I really wish ballet was more known and understood among people... But yeah, you don't have to be Russian to love this, just somehow the Russians seem to care more than us about it 😔
The Pas de Deux is absolutely incredible perfection, and when watching it in the ballet is non words descrittable!!

It's impossible that a simple major descending scale, followed by a minor descending scale, could be so mesmerizing! But it's true. This first piece, by Tchaikovski, is from Nutcracker, I think. One of the most fabulous pieces of music ever!

Nutcracker Pas de Deux... I agree, it's one of the highest achievement of Romantic music of all time... I recommend you to watch it danced as well: in the entire ballet, it's the great grand final of a long divertissement that builds up to this, and it's just magical
It even gives shivers.

Я родилась в Советском Союзе. Можно говорить сколько угодно плохих слов об этой стране, но я знаю, что мы получали отличное образование, государство действительно делало всё, чтобы дети приучались с самых малых лет к искусству. У нас даже были мультфильмы на классические произведения, в частности "Щелкунчик". А ещё, когда по телевидению показывали праздничный концерт, было обязательным, наряду с поп-музыкантами, вставлять куски с класической музыкой. Чаще всего в это время играл именно этот Оркестр. Я очень хорошо помню Светланова. В этих же концертах всегда был отрывок из какого-нибудь балета, романсы , фольклор, народные танцы.... Ну и поп-исполнители.😁
Мы тогда, будучи детьми, злились, что нам навязывают эту "скучную" музыку. Но она так незаметно и гармонично вошла в наш геном, что является чем-то совсем естественным. Я чувствую эту музыку как нечто моё, из глубины моего рода. Это удивительно, как правильно была продумана работа с молодёжью. Я благодарна этому времени.

I shamefully admit I didn't know Khrennikov nor Miaskovsky to this day. All these pieces are masterfully executed. Khrennikov's Hussar Ballad moved me to the tears, and Miaskovsky's adagio is simply breath-taking.

I heard Myaskovsky's Symphony No 19 many years ago at a Prom Concert. On the way out I heard someone say, "why do we have to listen to that rubbish when we have so many fifth rate composers of our own?"

Svetlanov (the conductor you've heard here) was great rescater of the Russian Heritage. There are so many rare gems in there: Liapunov, Arensky, Medtner, Konius, some works of Scryabin, Tanieyev, Glazunov... So many!
