Great video! Stellar paint job; I'm going to be following this for my Hivestorm build when I can next month! I really appreciate you listing Citadel paints for goofballs like me with a self-punishment fetish. :)
Informative video, however your worst may be my best 😂
Fear not, your best will get better :)
and you really need to tell us where your getting your natural hair brushes at that are "affordable" ive not seen any for less than 30 bucks and the size 6 on the W&N site is 100+ dollars
WHere are you based? I'm working with a brush producer here in the UK now called Hawk Miniatures - linkedin most of my descriptions. He posts to the US, but does very good, very affordable brushes - can link you to some alternatives if you want to join the Discord too - more than happy to provide recommnedations. I can also give you a discount code for Monument Hobbies if you want to spend a little more for them - they're US based too.
25 bucks american for 5 pots is already a bargain though...just getting the models for free basically
Yeah although I feel like the Paints & Tools set mignt be better in that case - then you at least get a few more useful colours, if the models aren't of interest - but then you're buying regular models straight out the gate instead of push fit I suppose. Swings & roundabouts :)
Like Mum's night out......🤣🤣🤣🤣
This was the exact box i got just last week and painted over the weekend as my first ever mins of any kind! So if you want fresh review from a beginner, here you go! I don't know how about others, but after deciding to order this in order to try out a new hobby, i went deep into research. That was highly overwhelming. Everyone started on about, you need this kit, you need this primer, don't do that, use this method... You get the idea. After a lot of thinking and not wanting to sink over like 40 quid all in all in my first painting, i ended up getting some cheap make up brushes for slathering on the base coat and a hobby knife, to clean the edges. For any first timer reading this, don't make the mistake i did, get the primer, my painting started flaking already when i was painting it. Anyways, i got it home, cut them out, which took me over an hour itself. I then looked up many guides on how to paint, but finally found the original guide from games workshop on this specific set, so instead of experimenting, i just followed that. Put the blue on the base in 3 thinner layers, which was good to at least familiarize myself with how the paint behaves in cracks and crevices of the mini. Then moving on the black for the gun and the satchels on the back. That progression was great, since it was only around the second color that i started to get the hang of mixing the paint on the pallet to get the consistency i wanted, and working on the small handle points and the pouches on the back helped me to learn how to approach details on the mini. Then it finally came to the metallic paints, that's where the first detail was done on the shoulder pads, where i basically got the metallic paint everywhere and needed to do about 10 thousand touchups afterwards with the blue to cover it all up. Only at the white while doing the emblems on the shoulder pads did i realize that you can put the brush to the mini on these flatter surfaces with extended edges on the side, which allowed the paint to nicely fill out the emblem, but also took a few tries. With the technic paint, i was slighty annoyed at myself, since i didnt have any tools for that either, seriously, get at least the wooden coffee sitrer. I ended up getting the technic paint on the boots of the spacemarines, which made it look like they had big chucnks of dirt stuck to their suits. A tip, don't stress if this happens, i waited for it to dry out, then it was easier to remove and the rest i just repainted. Overall, id say the experience was pretty fun all around. As a first timer, probably the top 3 things id change is add a primer to this set, since i had the blue base coat flaking several times during painting, add a better brush, or in the least, two brushes, and make the second one more disposable and bigger, to apply the primer / base coat and finaly, id add some clear way on the box, or maybe with a paper in the box, to direct people to the original guide on how to paint this exact set, to avoid overwhelming new players. But other than that, it was great, and im already doing research on what army id like to strive towards painting and eventualy playing properly
Sounds like a net positive - but we agree on basically the same things so that’s good :) - thanks for the comment. It’s easily the biggest one I’ve ever had! Haha - welcome to the hobby and hope you continue to enjoy the videos :)
Really like that you don't skip ahead and miss massive parts, you actually show how the steps are supposed to look, and give an idea about how long the steps take/drying time etc. Also, it's actually funny! As nice as the Bob Ross style that a lot of youtubers use can be, I like that these videos aren't a combination of tutorial and sleep aid.
haha thanks! I do like to keep it somewhat interesting - I appreciate the comment too - glad you liked it :)
I really like this style of overgrown. Would love to see some of the larger pieces in part 2
Nice one thank you - I'll take note :)
The pace of video output is insane. If youre in need of content ideas, board games might be a new approach. Recently bought Mice and Mystics and its a nice break from 40k and GW
Had a recent flurry yeah - the joys of being unemployed!! :D - will check out Mice & Mystics!!
Good video Don't have kill team but just watched it anyway
Thanks - it should be applicable to almost any similar terrain :)
Had me giggling like an 8-year old hearing the word "bum" for the first time.
Hehe :)
Damn, you are so productive. So many videos. I love it! Keep up the great work
Thank you!! :)
Those orange handled 8404's are the real deal. Painted with the maestros for 2 years and going to the orange handles with a much sharper tip leveled up my final product significantly and instantly.
Good to know!! Thank you :)
I'm a big fan of post-apocalyptic terrain too, will definitely try this out on my (first) terrainpieces. Hope to get a result as good as yours!
Best of luck! I hope it's a reasonably easy recipe - I think a couple of key things are just good placement of streaks and placement of flocks. :)
@@alexpaintstinythings I have some flock from my architecture studies still somewhere around, but do fear that they will (like you said) fall off and get everywhere haha. At the moment I'm always just painting on the desk in my bedroom, so not the best place to for flocks, should get a better setup like yours. The flocks did however add great detail, age and personality to your piece...absolutely love the way it looked on yours!
First 🎉
haha, you're getting good at this!
So git gud?
I mean not really :D - git gud ignores the intentional practice aspect - but sure, if you like :D
@alexpaintstinythings git gud as in you try and try until you eventually make it.
@@jaypeadieL611 in that case - yes, I suppose so :D
Absolutely love your videos Alex, I've learned loads of good techniques and tips from watching them. My 14yo and I recently picked up Warhammer again (after a short spell before Covid, but my son was just too young to have any confidence painting), and your videos have helped us a lot in our progress. Side note, we live in Edinburgh (10 minutes walk from Ancient Robots) so the Scottish side of your videos is a massive bonus, haha!
Ah no way Ancient Robot is great! I wish I lived closer but I moved up north last year, so I'm in rural Perthshire now. Glad you like the videos though - and love that you're getting your kids into it too! Tell your son not to worry about having confidence, just to have fun - the confidence will come second :D
Great video! It starts out with something I can understand and even try, then dropped into techniques I’m nowhere near ready for yet. It really runs the range from beginner to advanced techniques in one video.
Thank you!! Really appreciate that - hope it continues to be useful :)
Bro, I absolutely love your sense of humor! The dry humping paint comment and "your mom's favorite part" line totally caught me off guard 😆 Your blend (or stippling) of editing style, narration, humor, and solid hobby advice is wonderful. Always makes me smile when I see a new video posted in my feed. Keep on creating Alex!
Thank you!! I worry sometimes that not all the videos are funny and it’s sometimes difficult to throw in the jokes (or when I run out it’ll suck) but it’s nice to know they’re still working as intended :) - I appreciate the comment! :)
Stippling-thingy was something new - need to try that out! Thanks!
Ace - yeah it's quite a popular technique - called "micro stippling" sometimes too - but you can do stippling on a large scale with some good drybrushes too :)
Pretty funny, because your "painting in silence" comment hit home with me. I actually always paint in complete silence...like some sort of psychopath. To each their own! 😅
Haha, I've done it before but it feels odd to me - I like to have something to listen to - but I totally get it if silence helps you concentrate :D
That's all well and good, but how's your sample knowledge?
The tunes are real nice here
First 🎉
Hi Alex, love your work. However, I felt like this started as a "I'll show you techniques" but quickly turned into a display at how amazing you are at painting. Please don't take offence to this. I would like to see a few maybe in-depth videos of the techniques. Like the way you and others are able to blend colours, you do it with the snakes yellows to green. I can see in the video what you're doing but maybe a bit more slowed down, in detail and a bit closer to how you are actually able to carry out these techniques
Hey! Absolutely, I can maybe do a just blending video or zoom in on some of these specifics separately - I appreciate the feedback!! :)
I enjoyed the slightly longer format, but you do whatever works for you and I'll keep watching
Thanks! Yeah it takes a bit longer to edit, but I don't mind the longer videos - I just worry people get bored!!
footsore miniatures have plastic and metal figures and I came across many (3d printed) miniatures on bigger events like Smc
Ah brilliant I'd not come accross Footsore before - and agreed, SMC had lots of minis although many not affiliated to a game per-say. :)
noticed quite a change in your format. This is more informative, which is great and these tips I totally agree with... but being honest, I like your f'ups which brings your personality out more. You do you, just giving some feedback
Yeah it’s a tough balance. I appreciate the feedback. I’m aware some of this isn’t as funny or silly, but I’m trying to also provide useful info too :)
Pale sand FTW. I almost poo'd my Y Fronts when I saw it
oh nooooo. my bank account. ahhhhhhhh.
Haha bye bye all my money!!!

Theres a lot of love and thought in there! i have a large wooden board i paint on and keep brushes, pots and pallets on. Then I have craft storage box with all my paints and base stuff etc. These can be easily moved between 3 areas of the house i might paint in. I dont have anywhere near as many paints as you but it works well for me and has seen me paint much more often as its always in reach and doesnt take long to set up.
Ah excellent - I think a portable setup is definitely a good solution if you don't have a room you can use all the time. Sounds like you have something good going on! :)
I think the display cases are actually really worth it - it helps remind you of all the cool stuff you painted. I'm working on turning a 300 sqft shed into a hobby space and I'm trying to incorporate good display options for inspiration purposes.
Absolutely. I like having them there for sure! :)
One page rules.
Bro if that is considered "terrible", then I might as well just toss out my minis. Damn
It’s all relative :) check my pinned comment. Not meant to discourage
As a viewer it feels a little dishonest to shove a chair commercial in the middle of your video without being up front about it. It would be better to make it clear what you are doing.
I mean, there's a notification on the video that it contains a paid promotion - and I do now use this chair. Despite the fact there's an "ad" of sorts in there, it's something I use, like and was happy to promote. I also made sure to put in timestamps so that anybody wishing to skip that was easily able to, and I turned off any other monetization for this video as a result so you didn't get other ads in addition. The video isn't just a chair ad, so hopefully the rest of it makes up for the chair bit! :)
Calling it “dishonest” seem a little much… it was clearly an add and he even stated that the company had been in contact with him at the start of that segment, so it wasn’t like it was a hidden add, and the topic of chair is relevant for the nature of this type of video. For a video on hobby Space I would expect lighting, seating and storage to be brought up, this is like any hobby content creator making a video on 3D printing and then having a segment about the printer they got sponsered in the middel of the video, or a painting video and bringing up the company that sponsered the models or airbrush guide and talking about the company that sponsored the new airbrush. I didn’t see any unethical behaviour in this video, he was brand naming everything else, and if anything it would be almost wierd not to go over the chair he is currently using, sponsored or not.
lol, your face when you sat into the C7 chair x)
This video is totally not a flex ......im onto you mister!!!!
caught! haha :)
Always interesting to see where others slap paint on plastic! Sneaky chair ad!
sneaky sneaky haha - thank you! :)
Gotta get the IKEA Skadis pegboards on those walls. Like, _all those walls._ With a 3D printer you can find a million hooks, shelves, trays, etc, for paint, brushes, masking tape, etc, and pump them out quick smart. I have next to nothing on my actual work desk, it's all elevated, and that's just making do with the stuff IKEA sells. Seriously, the possibilities for Skadis/3D printing is as exciting to me as any mini/model building prospect.
Great shout - I've been thinking about whether or not to wall mount some stuff - I think my worry is I do it then end up shifting things about and have to re-mount them - and I'm not great at wall-mounting - anything into plasterboard is my least favourite DIY stuff. Defo keen to make more use of the walls though!! :)
Your set up looks really nice. I am starting a new hobby room and it has given me some ideas. Thanks.
Thank you - glad it has helped :) Shout if you need any help with specific things!
Can we see David's trolly? I'm really interested in that

Idea for part 2: Which of the games mentioned are actually played on a wide enough scale that there are frequent tournaments or events where you can find people to play with. It doesn't matter how good an alternative game is if no one is playing it. Sadly.
I can try and find this but it's really difficult to get that info for everywhere - even locally I'd have to trawl all the stores to see if they ran games, then find out whether there were people turning up. I guess my goal for the videos is more oriented towards the collecting and painting of the miniatures side of things, since I'm less concerned with playing the game - and assuming that maybe having a few friends to play with would be sufficient. I get it though - it obviously helps if there is a bigger audience at play :)
@alexpaintstinythings Fair enough! Collecting and painting can be done solo and if that's the driving factor you don't need to bother with availability of other players, but then why buy games at all? Just get some airfix models and you're set. Cheaper and available world wide!
@@Anecron1 haha, I used to do Airfix, but I'm less into them these days - much prefer mini wargame pieces :)
3:10 no hobby knife? Sandpaper.
Neither come in the box :)
What brush/brush set would you recommend for a beginner? Without breaking the bank
Depends where you’re based but if you’re UK or Europe, I’ve just curated an Essentials Set with Hawk Miniatures to give beginners affordable and very good kolinsky sable brushes for mini painting :) - there are links from the discord or on a few other videos. Or a Google for “hawk miniatures Alex paints” should get you the set!
Good list. I’d add Rumbleslam and Burrows & Badgers.
Ah fab. Not heard of them. Will pop them on the list thank you!
Why did you get your magnifying glasses
I suspect you mean “where” - if so, Amazon and I’m planning a video on them. If “why” then really just to see the details better :)
@alexpaintstinythings yeah where was correct lol.
