  • So I have been promising for a while to upload this. I wished I had have filmed more, but such is life. You'll get a good idea of the seaworthiness of the vessel. What you wont see is how comfortable it also is.
    In retrospect, I would try to check my rigging more and upgrade the shackles for all the rigging.
    As always please subscribe so I can do a live stream for questions.
    If anyone wants advice on good riggers just add a comment. Malta and Almerimar (Andy the rigger) in Spain would be my most preferred locations for reliable work to be undertaken.

    In my sailboat dreams I never figured on a Tri, however, your wonderful videos have certainly changed that, wow. Oh and another thing, I love that you know when to talk and when not, the sound of the sea and the gentle banging round of your boat is my ASMR moment, who needs the sounds of pretty girls brushing their hair when you have the ocean singing in the background. Good on you, mate, just sayin.

    I love that Neel design, I could not imagine trying to make crossing on a mono haul. Thank you for taking the time to record and upload your adventures. It's nice to get a peak at how the Neel handles and living day to day can be. I think the basement LOL on a Neel is the best space allowed for an engine room. It must be nice to actually have some room when she need a repair. It's not all rainbows and butterflies out there. Crap has to break down a good bit. Keep up the good work bud. I am currently trying to find someone who needs a working hand on a crossing so I can get my wife out and see how she would deal with it. Im sure there are some moments on your first big crossing that might trip some folks out. I think I would love the peaceful space sailing brings at times.

    HI James! Thanks for sharing the Atlantic crossing. It really made my day to escape the confinement reality. Great video! It really gave a feel for the boat in those conditions. It would be great to do a live session. Carry on!! May I ask why you seem to be having your jib much tighter than the main? Is it an impression? It looks like the main is set for downwind and the jib for closed hauled...Does it balance better like this? Which shackles do you want to change for? All soft? Do yo even need those very expensive plotters anymore when you can have a computer and a bunch of tablets with open CPN and others...Ovital,..and the einstruments, radar, AIS on wifi?

    • @carryonsailing

      Valid point on the plotters now. Probably still have a waterproof one at the helm. Think the sail trim just seems like an illusion on camera. Noticed that myself. Think I would just upgrade all sail shackles if you're gonna push the boat hard. I'll show mods in another video.

    thank you very much for this information.
    I have just returned from a 3 week holiday on a Neel 51 and I am disappointed with the speed and tacking performance does not go higher to the wind than 60 degrees without very considerable loss of speed) compared to the Neel 45 I had a year before.
    I noticed that (at least up to the max speed of 11 knots at TWS of 25 knots coming from 90 ° under small front sail ("Jibe", is that the word?) and Main with 2 reefs) the ship built up a big bow wave and a big turbulence at the stern. This is a sign of a boat that does not manage to pass hull speed and sign of a bad design of the main hull which should be way longer and much more pointed than it is.
    In Comparison to the 51, the 45 easily transferred to gliding at 30 knots of wind coming from strictly astern and producing a speed of 14 knots with only the Genua.
    Under 25 knots of TWS we achieved 12 knots of speed at an angle of 45° to the true wind under 2 reefs in the main and small front sail.
    Overall I consider the 51 as too complicated for me, sporting a lot of room and showing disappointing sailing performance.

    • @carryonsailing
      @carryonsailing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Strange i easily get 40 degrees apparent. Also I have genset and aircon
      Sounds like your vessel was overloaded or something else. However, you've done the best thing and sailed one. So you are now better informed to know that you aren't likely to go for a neel 51. Well done. Also with you wind speed scenario, I would be using genoa and one reef in the main and bear off a little.

  • @RightPanel
    @RightPanel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've just done almost the same passage on my monohull (Hanse 461) and I'm shopping for a multihull. Neel 51 is one of choices. To be honest the speed is not really impressive. I've had almost the same speed (but much less comfort of course). I have been told that Neels can do more but I don't see it in this video. IMO the sails are not perfectly trimmed at some time. I'd ease the sheets more.
    Other then that the layout of the boat looks perfect for me. If you're still in the Caribbeans and want to sail her please let me know :-)
    Your OpenCPN setup is not perfect too. I'd recommend the following: Throw away B&G GoFree and put in a normal cheap router (I have TP-Link Archer C7). Then connect Zeus and the radar directly to the router (you can crimp the cables into RJ45 jack). Then get a NMEA2K to Ethernet gateway (ex. YDEN-02 from Yacht Devices). This way you don't need to have the USB cable connected to laptop and can use it anywhere in the boat. Also OpenCPN works perfect with B&G radar and even better then Zeus.

    • @carryonsailing
      @carryonsailing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I simply connect the laptop to wifi on the bandg display now, I don't use the multiplexer. I am aware of the trick with teh RJ45 connecter, just couldn't be bothered to set it up when the radar was already working. Thanks for the info. The speeds depend on when she is on a reach or not. Also how much you care about the rigging. Have a look at some of the more recent videos perhaps on the instagram also.

      @@carryonsailing Thanks man for the videos! Neel 51 is my main interest now. Before that my main choices were either a FP Salina 48 (cheap and roomy, faster then an average cat) or an Outremer 51 (expensive and small inside, but fast). Neel 51 seems to be even bigger and according to owners still fast. But after a performance cruiser monohull any multihull looks not really fast to me.

    • @Abebe345
      @Abebe345 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Two questions for you if you have time. Performance sailing: as someone relatively new to sailing, do you find you are constantly learning how best to harness the boats potential under sail while still being efficient and safe, or do you think you have found her performance pretty easily and are just cruising. Similar question under motor: if you came across money, could you see putting more powerful engine to take advantage of the boat's handling? Not for the objective of racing in either case but to have the ability to maneuver to the weather conditions you want as opposed to having it dictate to you.
      The electric motor are becoming interesting. Tesla recently had their battery day and they and the industry are looking at 1M mile batteries relatively soon w range between charges of 400 miles +. I can see an application for boats and they are looking at multiple applications such as home, aviation, etc.
      Good luck and look forward to further videos if you are inclined. The 51 looks like it could be the trend for ocean sailing for reasonable budgets.

    • @carryonsailing
      @carryonsailing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We are always learning something about sailing. One thing I would say, I would love load sensors on the shrouds so I know when I absolutely must take in the asymmetric. It's that sail that gives you the outrageously fast speeds on all sailing boats. Wind direction depending. As for the working sails. I have in my view got the sail trim perfect now for any wind velocity or direction. The boat will always sail faster than the motor if you have 6kn of wind on any reach. Bigger motor means more weight. Also, its as simple as this. Want to cross an ocean, get a sail boat, unless you are a oil magnate....

    • @Abebe345
      @Abebe345 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unbelievable. 6kn of wind. I was at one time thinking about a motor solution, but the 51 has captured my imagination. I like the way she moves and rides in addition to the living, working opportunities.
      What you are referring to is what swirls in the back of my mind. I do minor programming to use computers for trading. If I get to ownership, I would explore sensors and controllers to optimize the sails for the conditions and wind. Intriguing.
