This has likely been dealt with in another comment, but I'll risk repeating it. The 49th parallel forms the border from Lake of the Woods west to the border between BC and Washington State. East of Lake of the Woods, the border follows a combination of natural boundaries and treaty-agreed survey markers. This is alluded to (briefly), but for the most part the border is called a straight line (even referred to incorrectly as a straight line that goes on for 6416 km at 1:40) . "The 49th Parallel" is a colloquialism for the international boundary, but 70% of Canada's population actually lives south of the 49th parallel, including all the people in Toronto and Montreal (the two largest cities). I live in Nova Scotia at 44.6 degrees north. The whole province is below the 49th, as are the entire provinces of Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. The eastern parts of the border were negotiated for the most part in the 18th and 19th centuries. Toronto is located at 43 degrees North, Montreal at 45, and Halifax (where I live) at 44.6. Even Ottawa, the national capital, is at 45. So, the western half of the border is the 49th parallel for the most part (like Vancouver and its appropriately named coffee shop), but the vast majority of the population lives south of the 49th. Fun fact: Pelee Island (Canada's southernmost point in the middle of Lake Erie) is at 41.6 degrees North, a little south of the boundary line between Oregon and California over on the west coast. @@greatwolf5372 Hey, all the foreign buyers left because of covid 19, also the over leveraged airbnb rentals are draining money by the day now. Maybe Vancouver will be slightly less unaffordable now.
Wouldn't be that practical. In terms of Canada we only have Canadians crossing the border and they wouldn't feel the need to since the living conditions are pretty much the same. The southern border doesn't just open up to Mexico but to every other country in the continental Americas. Also there isn't nearly as much trade between the US and Canada as there is between the US and Mexico so it would make sense for there to be more security at that border because way way more people are crossing it for economic reasons. In my opinion the wall is a bit much and more of a public stunt than anything effective, however it makes sense for the Canadian and Mexican borders to be different.
@@carbon5362 On the other hand, we in Canada have Americans threatening to move up here whenever politics doesn't go their way down there. Americans are our Mexicans. Also, we love Mexican tourists up here in Canada.
@@raynemichelle2996 Also, everyone loves Mexican tourists but nobody loves Mexican Cartels flooding into their borders. 100% of applications from Canadians requesting to become Americans (actually all forms of visas) are 100% full 100% of the time. Thanks for this video. I'm equally curious about things like this, even if I live on the other side of the world :) May I ask how long again was the travel from Port Roberts to the area where kids attend school at for middle school etc? Edit: thanks for using kilometers instead of miles hehe
I live in White Rock BC, which is just next to Blaine WA. The drive takes around 40 minutes, going border to border, but thats not including wait times. Most of the trip is on a highway, but thats still one bizarre commute to school.
Oversimplified explained this in the pig war video beautifully. That west coast “they dipped it down and whatever” nearly has the US and Canada at war. You glossed right over that
Once again, great video. Watchin you from the Czech Republic, in the middle of europe, you have fans even here aaaand we have a borders too :D keep up the great content.
As a Canuck, I appreciate this video very much. One item to note, Point Roberts, Northwest Angle and Campobello Island are the major habited enclaves, but there are many many more uninhabited ones, along with many towns, that preexisted this border, as well as a First Nations (that is what we call Native Americans) reserve that is sandwiched on an island between the two countries (pretty much being in neither). The most interesting to me is Piney Pinecreek Border Airport (K48Y) which is located in both Minnesota and Manitoba. Each country has it's own airplane apron, but to use the runway, you must enter the USA.
Hey dont be mean to the minnesotian . I was there. Very nice people. Maybe not the ones who treat illhan omar like shit cause she is a muslim. But they are very nice people.
It was great but you need to mention that more than half of all Canadians live SOUTH of the 49th parallel!! Toronto, our largest city , whose region has 25% of all Canadians, is at the same latitude of Northern California at 43 degree, far south of 49. Also, Detroit is actually NORTH of Windsor Ontario. Most Canadians live right along the US border with exactly the same weather. No one lives in the North!!
Canadian here again, I love these highlights on obscure stuff, I never would have thought to think about. Great little insight into both of our countries.
There’s kids that live in the USA that have to cross in and out of Mexico to go to school, because of the way the southern border is shaped. Next vid? 🙏🏽
The kids in Point Roberts aren't the only cross border high schoolers - the teens of Akwesasne sit in between Canada and the US, and their community doesn't have a high school. And they can choose - buses leave in the morning for both US and Canadian high schools. So you and your best friend might live next door to each other and go to high school in two different countries. And yes, these kids cross the border over and over each time.
I am truly fantasizing I am there right now with all of you. This is amazing information and so much fun. Great vision to strive for in my future (now).

Thank you for making a video to help us pass the time. Very interesting video, watched the whole thing :) ❤️ love your vids man!
Imagine those kids make friends at school and theyre like come over this weekend, its like nah i dont wanna do 4 border crossings
You're really nice with editing and storyboarding. The way you organize and simplify the direction of your writing and/or recording (applauding)

Time to destroy the comment section with the next question:
Can you imagine if the border between Mexico and the US were that friendly to each other?
Things would be a lot easier for the millions of people who cross every year for school, work, shopping, and vacations.
@@chichim2020 You should shut up.
I don't know what smug passive-aggressive thing you hoped to spit out here but nope.

The "49th parallel" is most accurate for the West, since in the East, the border is much south of that - and Montreal, Toronto, Nova Scotia, etc. are all south of the 49th.
Over twenty-five million Canadians live south of the 49th parallel.
@@jaberwoky_ That is the majority of the population
@@raynemichelle2996 Correct. Get a map of the continental USA and check out the American cities that are north of our most southern point. I forget the numbers but there are X million Canadians who live further south than Y million Americans.
What this video did for me is realized I need friends. I miss hanging out.
"the only way to access is through this little land bridge", "you have to do 4 border crossings a day just to go to school", somebody tell this man about boats
Boats and riding them costs alot of money
@@shantor100 Tell that to people on tiny islands needing the boat trip because water, not because borders.
@@johndododoe1411 I'm specifically talking about this story. Not everyone on earth. Relax. I know children in other countries cross rivers on bridges to go to school. I just made a general response to someone suggestion a boat. Obviously those people thought about it too and don't take a boat for some reasons. Maybe the water is more dangerous at certain times of the year. I don't know

@AKAAK I meant the Point Roberts/Northwest Angle border issues. Also way too many people abused that Alaska loophole, they should've just forced them all to take ferries through the inside passage.
@@noelleelizabeth9991 Agreed.

Thank you so much for doing this video! I live on Vancouver Island and it was super cool to learn more about the history of the border and see some great footage of where I live!
I'm curious do you guys in Canada specifically Vancouver and the like learn about the history of that area? I remember here in Washington State we are required to take a state history class in 8th grade.
@@poocrafter2 Yes we learn quite a bit about the history of the area but it is mostly focused on colonization and the gold rush and not much else (as far as I can remember)
lol I was just at that coffee shop. It's in kits right? (their orange and pistachio donut is amazing)
Don’t forget Elm Point, a Minnesota exclave even smaller than the Northwest Angle cut by the 49th parallel.
Check Escourt, Quebec.
It supposidly came about on the last evening of drawing the border and the wine flowed a little too much.

as a Vancouverite, this was a pleasant surprise of a video lol. yay! we're the best!

Johnny, as a Winnipegger, I've been to the Northwest Angle before and Jim's Corner. It was very odd for sure! Also we went in the winter and you can take an ice road directly across Lake of the Woods without having to cross the border! Definitely a fun day trip from Winnipeg!
Also, if you do really want to go here some day, I'd be happy to take you!
Ok. As an American I can say without exaggeration or hesitation, visiting Vancouver and Victoria Island BC is a MUST (Very close to each other)! Put it on your bucket list. Yes, Banff BC, Quebec City, Toronto and many other places are great. But There's so much to see and do there it's mind blowing. Best salmon fishing ever, hunting too. The cities are beautiful. Whale watching, omg endless stuff for all types. World class shopping too.
Please open the borders so I can head north again for camping.
PS great video.
Thanks for showing off my country! I’m way up past the 55th parallel in Alberta also have you been to science world?
The Vancouver Telus(R) Science World, or the Edmonton one?
Aero I didn’t even know hey had one in Edmonton! I’m going there in 4 days so I’ll check it out. I was referring to the one in Vancouver which I’ve been too
It's so weird how information gets to me. This is not the first time that I have heard something on a podcast and then see a video pop up for the same topic later. I'm sure it is just a coincidence, but 99% invisible did a large chunk of an episode of the enclaves and stuff about that boarder and did a whole episode on point roberts.
Its your phone spying on you, this is the new generation marketing, todays technology follows every site you go to & listens to conversations you have so it can provide you with the best matching videos/websites or whatever you looking for. This how they make money from you
Can you share the link of 99% invisible's recent podcast ?
vancouver is a gem :)
I just recently found you and I am extremley impressed! I would like to add another oddity about borders. Ohio and Michigan have an oddity that part of Michigan can only be accessed by driving thru Toledo Ohio , or by boat! Trivial but interesting! Keep up the good work !

Thanks for this video. I'm equally curious about things like this, even if I live on the other side of the world :)
May I ask how long again was the travel from Port Roberts to the area where kids attend school at for middle school etc?
Edit: thanks for using kilometers instead of miles hehe
I live in White Rock BC, which is just next to Blaine WA. The drive takes around 40 minutes, going border to border, but thats not including wait times. Most of the trip is on a highway, but thats still one bizarre commute to school.
Years ago the pubs in BC were closed on Sundays, so it was quite the thing to drive down to PR and have a beer.
6:05 - Just use a boat

Oversimplified explained this in the pig war video beautifully. That west coast “they dipped it down and whatever” nearly has the US and Canada at war. You glossed right over that
Once again, great video. Watchin you from the Czech Republic, in the middle of europe, you have fans even here aaaand we have a borders too :D keep up the great content.
As soon as I saw it was you Johnny I clicked soo fast Canada still remembers we won the war way back when
"...don't know if you're interested in a history lesson right now; I'm not..."
I literally watch your videos for history lessons. 😐
I work by Point Roberts and always wondered what’s the point 😂
Roberts
I love your content... Putting your ads at the end... Lots of love from Philippines.... ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Omg everything he said in this video was me literally 1 hour ago, I was looking at google maps and I noticed all of this
There’s kids that live in the USA that have to cross in and out of Mexico to go to school, because of the way the southern border is shaped. Next vid? 🙏🏽
3:52 Sasquatch appears between branch and jhonny
The kids in Point Roberts aren't the only cross border high schoolers - the teens of Akwesasne sit in between Canada and the US, and their community doesn't have a high school. And they can choose - buses leave in the morning for both US and Canadian high schools. So you and your best friend might live next door to each other and go to high school in two different countries. And yes, these kids cross the border over and over each time.
I am truly fantasizing I am there right now with all of you. This is amazing information and so much fun. Great vision to strive for in my future (now).
