I feel like you missed an opportunity to tell the crazy story of how a single rogue Danish diplomat secured a deal with America to open a military base in Greenland while Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany. Important point in the history of a long alliance between Denmark and USA.
A video about geopolitics of Greenland that doesn't clearly discuss Greenland's relationship to Denmark is strange. Not once was it explicitly mentioned that Greenland is a part of The Kingdom of Denmark (now by choice), which makes Denmark a central player in the arctic too. This video shockingly highlighted the US-centrism - mentioning only US interests and the ones of its rival China.
@@AshrakAhmed that is no excuse to ignore the role Denmark has to play. And it is to be noted that Denmark has refused to "sell" Greenland to the US several times even if they are allies.
The key to understanding here is that this is episodic content. Some of that colonialism by Denmark was discussed in the previous episode about Greenland. Not every detail needs to be repeated in every episode.
Because the US is preying on Greenland. Old school imperialism at play. This video is priming you to accept it when it happens. This is how the us functions. They use the power of soft propaganda to achieve goals
Let's not pretend Greenland is even remotely self-sustaining. They live off nearly half a billion dollars annually from Denmark for approximately 50K people. I support Greenlandic independence morally, but we're a long way away from it being financially viable, and realistically you'd end up being financially chained by worse countries instead.
That is what I was thinking. How could these people living on a block of ice that has no trees, afford to have all of these facilities and live a comfortable life in such a harsh climate where even animals wouldn't want to live
I am from Denmark and it’s crazy to me that we own such a significant geographical location. But Johnny you did event mention us lol, and you say they are building diplomatic relations with Greenland, but they are building diplomatic relationships with Denmark.
Its because his focus on the video isn't on Denmark as a whole; people on the internet get confused really easily so he's saying Greenland but really means Denmark because its easier for the average viewer to understand
I well know, that Denmark isn't a superpower by any means, but since Greenland is part of our realm and have members represented in our Parliament, a bit more mention on Denmarks role in this question would have been nice. A major reason for the US being able to build all those bases was Denmarks Nato membership and alliance with the USA. We the Danish had no reasons to complain about them strengthening the defense against a possible Soviet threat.
That's why alliances are so important. We have similar interests. And more can be accomplished as a team. Despite the Soviet Union being disbanded, Russia is still looking for new ways to grow in power and influence. Now China is in the mix so it will be interesting to see how things play out in the future.
@@aqqatone Det ville ikke være nødvendigt overhovedet. Grønland har al ret til selvbestemmelse, men siden de pt. er en del af rigsfælleskabet, kunne han have dækket Danmarks rolle lidt mere.
The US immediately getting involved once China decided to start funding and building airports in greenland reminds me of the town in West Virginia who couldn't get state funding for a necessary bridge so they went to the USSR who decided it was a perfect opportunity to show off.
These arctic videos you put out are so fascinating to me because we rarely see maps from a North Pole centric perspective. It makes people and countries halfway around the world seem a little closer.
As a brit it blew my mind seeing russias spacial relationship to the UK from that perspective. It's kind of common sense when you think about it, but the mercator projection is so hard wired
BRICS seeks to create a new currency, considering gold's historical role as a store of value and medium of exchange. However, the functionality and acceptance of a gold-backed currency in the current global financial system are uncertain. Creating a new currency requires careful consideration of economic, political, and logistical factors.
The discussions and proposals surrounding BRICS nations' potential use of gold are intriguing. People choose to buy gold for various reasons, such as its historical role as a store of value and medium of exchange, its potential as a hedge against inflation or currency devaluation, and its relative scarcity compared to other commodities. Gold also offers diversification benefits to investment portfolios due to its low correlation with stocks and bonds.
I find gold investment reliable and aim to buy more to recover losses. Silver is also a good investment but differs from my collectibles. Clear investment goals and education are crucial. I work with Margaret Johnson Arndt a SEC-regulated financial consultant. Starting with modest investments, I accumulated nearly $799k over time.
thank you for this tip , I must say, Margaret appears to be quite knowledgeable. After coming across her online page, I thoroughly went through her resume, and I must say, it was quite impressive. I reached out to her, and I have booked a session with her.
That's Greenland's own land. In fact, US owed Greenland a lot of rent for using that land. But US cleanly escaped from paying any of that and on top of that littered all the area with war equipment trash which is of use to nobody. And US still has the audacity "sell" the land. What an effing "d**k" move.
I’m not pro China, but it’s worth pointing out that Chinese influence tactics are lifted straight from the western/USA playbook of post colonial control
Instead of taking steps to prevent the ice caps melting everyone is simply looking to take advantage and likely make the situation worse in the process.
well capitalism requires unlimited growth and we live in one planet which isn't growing on size so gotta unlock the other places. Once Greenland is done we will liberate the Amazon basin from that bloody insect infested jungle and Brazil will see progress like no other.
I actually had a professor researching this topic via Camp Century (the biggest US camp on Iceland). Ok there he also was able to access Ice cores that no one had ever really accessed. Super cool stuff. But on the lecture he gave us in class, he was absolutely freaked about about the war potential of Greenland.
"How tiny Denmark would be without us". Comes from a nation whose economy would crumble if Denmark didn't dump buckets of money into that bottomless pit every year.
Well, Denmark is one of the world's largest importers and exporters of fish and fish products, and why do you think that is? There's so much that Denmark is making out of Greenland,. just in the fishing industry there are cods, halibuts, shrimps, crabs, caviars and so much more that comes from Greenland. And because The US has a military base in Greenland, Denmark saves tons of money, when they're paying to NATO. Yes, Denmark "pays" buckets of money to that "bottomless pit" every year, but it's nothing compared to how much money Denmark makes out of Greenland every year.
@@TheLetterKyu literally 40% of population works for the government. And about 60% of Greenland’s government budget is paid for by Denmark. So this literally means about half of Greenland’s economy is free money from Denmark. who's exploiting who here?
But whenever they talk about independence, Denmark tries very hard to show how they can't do that, like they are afraid of losing it, while danish 'non-political people' wants to get rid of Greenland. Kind of weird
@@hobbygrg-eudaimoniastudio Greenland is a very important place for Denmark like it is for US. When 'non-political people' talk about getting rid of Greenland it is because we do actually spend an massive amount of money that could be used in-land insted and like these comments shows you don't really show any gratitude, just being idiots about it ;) But, we need each other. Denmark need greenland for the power of landmass and Greenland need Denmark because of its existens in a modern world.
Just a small correction: Thule (TOO-li) Air Base reorganized to be a Space Force base back in 2020. Then in April 2023, it was renamed to Pituffik (bee-doo-FEEK) Space Base to recognize the native name for the region.
All these proxy conflicts and territorial disputes are leading up to something bigger. It’s hard to not notice the similarities between current geopolitical times to those of the pre WW1 or WW2 time periods. It’s definitely alarming.
I've been shouting from the rooftops (metaphorically) ever since 2007/8. We're building up to a new world war. I don't expect to live to seniority. I do not save up for retirement. Even if I don't die because of the war, I will because the climate is going to get absolutely wrecked by large scale destruction.
The issue with "This looks sorta like pre WW1 and WW2 time period" analysis is they have tons of false positives. There are plenty of times where things look "sorta like pre WW(s)" (if you squint hard enough) and no WW came of it. Also the calculus is way different pre- vs post- nuclear arms.
@@owensks i know we're really far away from another world war, but the geopolitical tensions between world powers grew massively in the last 10+ years. This does scare me.

A while ago The Canadian military backed out of a deal where the government was going to provide arctic warfare training for Chinese military officials (or at least let them observe Canadian exercises). I think it was the military command that was just like yeah no we're not doing that. This gives it some context
@@Jack-pf6lvIf the US wanted Vietnam it would’ve drop a nuke on it, let’s be honest. Full measures were never used by the US in any post ww2 war. Kinda like Russia right now playing with its good when it could send Ukrainian to kingdom come if it wanted.
I never realized the immense significance of Greenland until now. The race to control its resources and strategic location is truly fascinating and makes you wonder about the geopolitical dynamics at play. The melting ice and potential access to valuable minerals definitely add a new layer of complexity. It's crucial that we prioritize environmental sustainability and engage in responsible governance to ensure the well-being of both the region and its people. Thanks for shedding light on this compelling topic! 👏🌍
Great episode. Relevant for us that live in the Arctic (Norway). Sidenote: You're speaking about Greenland as if they were a souverign nation, though. It's Denmark. Denmark has the final word in everything Greenland decides to do or not do.
Thank you! This was what baffled me through out the whole video! the question we should be asking is how Greenland even went to China to make deal in the first place? I like John's video but on this one he kinda try to gloss over the fact that Greenlanders has no say in it. So 70% don't want Chinese money but 100% wants USA money? cause USA money is coming into the country uninterrupted cause Denmark said so, don't matter what Greenlanders think.
Greenland is relatively independent in its governance though. The deals that he was talking about are not directly proposed to the Danish government. They are proposed to Greenland and the governance there. It has it's own prime minister and everything.
As someone in the Space Force, I think you mixed up the intent of Thule Air Base. It's not meant to detect a Russian invasion over the arctic (a crazy idea that should never be attempted in the first place), it's meant as the newer version of the very radars you visited. It's a phased array radar site to detect Russian ICBMs. Due to the shorter distance between Russia and the U.S over the Arctic, Russian nuclear missiles have always been anticipated to fly over the North Pole. Thus, Thule is THE most strategically important base for the U.S in the event of Nuclear war. When it's not detecting missiles though, it's tracking space objects. Hence why it's becoming a Space Force base.
I'm not sure how I didn't stumble on this channel before. Besides the storytelling, the production is just amazing. Love use of the maps and visualization of the story. Keep up!
You might want to do a bit of research, he took money from the world economic forum (which is a lobbying org funded by large multinationals like Amazon) and made a shill video, extolling the virtues of "Shareholder capitalism" which is very dangerous version of neo liberalism, where these multinationals will have a greater say in world events. That's just one example of things he's misrepresented or got wrong.
storytelling? he says the same things over and over again in 15 minutes of this 20 min video he should do better research and added information to the video or made it a lot shorter.
Not a word about the whisky war between Canada and Greenland (Denmark) for Hans island 😢 the war in which casualities were measured in flags and alcohol bottle.
@@rastalique8114 If it is so hard for you to see hope in the Whiskey war, then take a look at how Denmark and Germany solved their border disbute without any bloodshed too. If that fails you as well then I suggest you have a really hard look at why your values has led to so little hope!
Wouldn't it be crazy if Russia was somehow convinced to sell any one of their islands in the Arctic circle to China just so China can even at least claim to have an actual territorial presence in that region?
Great Video Johnny and crew!! My grandfather did work in Greenland back in the 80’s. He said it was so different there and cold there. It amazing what’s happening now. Sort of like when the president of France was angry with the US about some NATO disagreements and told the American secretary of state he wanted all American soldiers out of France by the end of the month. The secretary responded "If you mean ALL American servicemen we will need more time than that to dig up all the Americans buried in French fields ." I think the demand was retracted.
This video honestly scares me. I'm from Friesland, in the Netherlands. Our entire province already lies beneath the sea level. The fact that people are already planning new trade routes over the north pole instead of preventing the melting of the arctic and preventing rising sea levels is terrifying to me. Our whole country is currently protected by dikes, but these aren't going to last forever. Just imagine seeing your whole identity, culture, language and land getting erased.
0:32 Australia is technically an island because it is unconnected to any other body of land, but it is more commonly considered a continental landmass.
The arctic was important in the cold war because all of the nuclear ICBMs would be flying over it as it was the shortest route between the US and the USSR. So the early warning was designed against missiles and not a ground invasion.
The 2022 last season of the Danish, brilliant political drama series "Borgen", is all about this conflict exactly. Raises all the issues about alcoholism and depression in Greenland's youth that you mentioned in your previous video.
Alcoholism helps to keep the people docile and dependent which is good, or you get too many funny ideas in a country where half the time of the year you are stuck indoor.
People and countries should look for ways to take care of our Planet, to see what can be done so that the ice does not continue to melt instead of exploiting every single inch of this Planet.
The great irony is that the association with Denmark is probably more valuable than is realized. Greenland would be wise to maintain connections with Scandinavia even if it becomes completely independent. Small countries in the North that have managed to maintain independence from the whims of the larger powers and actually have outsized influence and power in the world themselves is a model these Nordic countries have mastered.
Greetings from Denmark. We love you guys up there, despite what our idiots in charge have done in the past. We'd be sad to see you leave, but want nothing but the very best for you as long as you let us come visit sometimes :)

Trump's idea to acquire Greenland made complete sense, and your video makes it clear why Greenland is so important. So I'm not sure why you implied those four years were "crazy"?
As a Canadian, I'd say this sounds like a whole lot of hype. The arctic is a harsh place. Only super powers can operate up there, or very large companies. It looks to me like there is plenty to go around in the vast arctic, surely US, Russia, China, Eu and others can all be investing in parts of Greenland without fighting being necessary and Greenland can prosper through all the activity and investment.
It is not only about who can prosper from it, but who gets to dictate the rules. Nordic Countries are for example much more likely to care about softer things like the locals or the environment..
In 1951, the US negotiated a treaty with NATO founding member Denmark giving the US military permission to station troops in defense of Greenland. Its base at Thule plays an important role in NORAD's early detection of ICBMs launched over the Pole. It hosts F-35s year-round and often stages RCAF elements during exercises.

I am sure it would be facinating for the team to research or even make a video on the Norweigen Annexation of East Greenland "Erik den rødes land". Then furthermore how this conflict led to a new understanding in claiming desolate areas, and the requirement for Denmark to uptain sovereignty in NE Greenland with the Sirius Patrol. I think this story is really interesting, especially in modern terms with the wish to be independant, how will the rules of desolate sovereignty work today.
I'm from Denmark and i'm just happy for the Greenlanders that they finally get more influence over what happens to them than they've previously had. And i hope complete independence for Greenland will be completely viable for them in the future.
As a Danish person why would you hope for their independence, the potential of such a valuable trade line opening up when the seas thaw, is a great financial boon for Denmark.

As a Dane, I am happy that Greenland gets a larger say in what happens with their Country. I just hope they actually get a say and not just get ran over by other Countries.
Fun fact: Icelandic/Scandinavian vikings were actually the first people to inhabit Greenland that still lives there to this day. The first people to ever inhabit Greenland died out. The modern inuit population of Greenland didn't settle there until 200 years after the vikings. Technically the Scandinavians are the native population of Greenland and it rightfully belongs to a Scandinavian country (Denmark).
@@Perspectiveon That doesn't make what I said not true, I didn't say that Scandinavians "continually" or "unceasingly" lived on Greenland to this day. Scandinavians as a people still existed after Greenland was abandoned by the original Norse settlers and Scandinavians do inhabit Greenland today as well.
A huge requisite for being a Native population is continually living in an area. Since the Vikings willingly left. These "ethnic" rights to a certain land don't come from getting there first, they come from towns, cities and/or nomadic settlements existing in a certain area. They come from people living in a place. "This race was living here first" implies "It's not ethical to kick out a race because you come later", it doesn't mean "This race now has permanent claims to the area". Also, even if the right by ethnicity worked how you propose, Denmark would have a claim to Southern Greenland. They never inhabited or colonized the Northern areas until the rediscovery of Greenland in the 18th century, as opposed to the Thule Inuit (and its modern day descendants), which inhabited it since the 1300s, before Norsemen left. Another factor is that they weren't expelled from the island, they willingly left because of the Black Death reaching Norway
@@quel2324 "A huge requisite for being a Native population is continually living in an area.", did you just make this up? If your parents leave their house temporarily, then I come along and decide to break in and live there, have your parents (and you as their heir) lost their/your right to their/your own house? Of course not, so why do you go out of your way to be logically inconsistent? There are already universally accepted rights like jus sanguinis that apply rights to land based on ethnicity. Also your evidence for the vikings willingly leaving Greenland is what now? Did you ask them? Is leaving a settlement because of a plague the same as leaving it willingly? Some sources show that the Norse left because the climate became harsher and even attacks from the increasing inuit population. Would you claim that native populations of today who are forced to move because of climate change lose their right to their land?

Yep, exactly! It is just all talk she does. I do agree that idenpendence is important. Meanwhile the economic growth would collapse on Greenland, if Denmark didn't supply Greenland with products and huge sums of money. Their import of products is much bigger than their export. Since they don't have a lot of industry. Most just fish and fishing products. Which is a narrow market. I sincerely hope she actually knows how much Denmark has given to them.

Not true. The viking settlers disappeared around 1450. Lots of vids about it.
Paleo-eskimos lived there first and still live there as inuit people that are the majority of inhabitants of greenland(Kalaallit Nunaat)

Yep, exactly! It is just all talk she does. I do agree that idenpendence is important. A few weeks later, the man received a letter from his son. "Dear Dad, please do not dig up the garden as that is where I hid all of the bodies. Love you, your son. "
The following day the federal police showed up along with FBI agents. They all spent the day digging up the garden, searching for evidence of dead bodies. However, the officers did not find anything.
A few days later, the man received another letter from his son; "Dear Dad, that was the best I could do given the circumstances. I hope they did a good job on the garden, from your son.
Ahahaha!! Genius!
denmark stood there like: We control greenland
Denmark is apart of NATO, you know who funds Nato the most and especially protects Greenland from countries like Russia? America, so in a sense, we run things.
@@Labyrinth6000Why do Americans act like they are part of what their government does, your rich and elite run things not you
@@thenoodletiger1869 they are born to think like this, its the same in sports over there, ever watched how they reacts to sports teams and fights in-between, or the yells of ~America, yay~ from teens on vacations gathering, to every house on some streets have a flag outside or stickers on cars.
they cant even see they are heading more and more into the dumpster by the day.
@@Labyrinth6000 the thing with this argument is that if denmark was kicked out of NATO, we would just join another alliance with china or russia + we are allied with the nordic countries outside of NATO.
Thanks for making this video Very informative an fun to watch!
In fact, it's a board game... it always has been and always will be... and unfortunately we, the people, are left in the middle...
Thanks Johnny, great video as always
It's not that weird that the radio dishes remind you of star wars.
Star Wars itself was largely designed using material from WW2 and the cold war.
They literally took thousands of model making kits, of the very objects we now consider history, and rehashed them into things like the millennium falcon.
Honestly without WW2 and the cold war there would be no Star Wars. The theme itself is almost a direct representation of those events.
"we have to realize how small Denmark is without Greenland"
Denkmark's GDP 300B
Greenland's GDP 3B
Didn't Denmark want to grant Greenland independence multiple times but failed because Greenland was unable to provide basic infrastructure for it's inhabitants?
Sure, Greenland might see a small window of opportunity because of geo strategic position just like in the Cold war
But overall it remains a humanitarian project and should be wary of alienating it's friends
Awesome video! I would have liked to have seen more about the relationship between Denmark and Greenland though. Otherwise this was very informative, as always!
As an Australian I’ll pretend I’m not offended in hearing Greenland be called the largest island in the world 😅
You're an entire continent by yourselves in the middle of the ocean. You won it from the start ahahah
Henceforth Greenland to be called largest island in the world without Kangaroos 🦘. LoL 😆
Reminds me of something Stephen Fry once said. I think he used it when discussion religion, but it seems valid in this context as well:
- "Being offended is not an argument"
- “It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what."
As a penguin native to Antarctica, I feel rather offended by Australian being considered the worlds largest island :P
The radar line was the DEW Line. We were taught all about that when I was a kid in the early 70's. Everyone in my age group learned about Civil Defence and everything related, like the DEW line. Rush even made a song about it! As for embassies and consulates...you really need them in countries. Face to face is how diplomatic stuff gets done. Zoom ain't it. And China is doing the same thing the US has done forever. Loan money and gain leverage.
In the end, the Trump meme of buying Denmark somehow would have allowed us to win the race
Such a well made video! subscribed❤
