Way back in 1996, I was a guitarist in a band, and we had the chance to open for a 16- or 17-year old Derek Trucks (with his band) at some tiny coffee shop in New Cumberland, PA. And let me put it this way: my band was not going to be lighting the world on fire. And that’s being kind. And of course even back then, Derek was a phenomenal talent. Clearly in another league. But this dude made a point to sit down and listen to us play and clap for our songs. At such a young age, he had already played with some of the best musicians on the planet (and now he is one). But he still took the time to listen to us and support us. That’s a kind soul right there. I’ve seen him play a dozen times since then throughout the years and am always swept away by how he makes his guitar sing. But that coffee shop in 1996 is my strongest memory of him. A class act.

He's got it literally always has ear is so sharp he and Billy have been great for Trey just imo. Respectful and just utterly incredible players 🎶can see Trey perk up listening to/being around either he loves their playing and vice versa : ). Treys control of tones and Billy and Derek's constant use of few are beautiful contrasts to hear together
We are so lucky to have Derek here right now to set the standard. The man carries a couple centuries of brilliance in his back pocket to every gig just in case he needs it.

Can't count how many times I've chastised some talking head saying "so and so is the goat, or he's the best ever" But the guy may just be the best on the planet. He can sit in with anyone and just not miss. Many of our favorites can't. Just steals every show anywhere he sits in. Inadvertently outplays anyone he plays with. And just gets better and better and better and better. Nuts man
I saw Derek the first time in 98 or 99, i was buying a beer at the uw Madison student union Rathskeller. Had just seen fall 97 spring 98, and thought. God damn that 16 year old kid is nuts. It’s sun fun watching this. Same poise, Derek is the man.

I never rated Joh Mayer before his gigs playing the Dead's music. Now I do. He has really grown. Of course Trucks is a major player. Maybe I just don't like slide guitar technique? @@jongray4828

Two very different interpretations of the guitar but they know how to fill the space while still letting each run, it’s actually incredible… trey haters need to watch this

First thing I notice when Trucks joins in during the 1st 30 secs is how much his tone makes it sound like some licks from "Elizabeth Reed" - that ABB sound! Awesome.
Trucks always makes Trey play better. Like when your little brother shows up from college, lol

Nah instead it made me think 'what could have been if they'd kept the 2nd guitar even after adding Page. They always saw it as an either/or (the 2nd guitar and keys) but with the right player, it could've been amazing. Too bad Derek was still in his daddy's balls.

Simply amazing! Saw trucks for first time with Phil n phriends in 99 and was blown away. He has only gotten better and better year by year. I think they played perfectly off of each other . So fuckin rad !

They brought Jeff Holdsworth up in Albany Dec 2003 for Possum and Camel Walk (I was at that show) That was a crazy night in Phish history for phans but not nearly as musically amazing as Derek here.

My first Phish show was in Pueblo Colorado in 92 they opened for Carlos I have been hooked ever since. I live in Denver but am couch touring Dicks this year. By the way King Gizz is my favorite young band playing right now cheer's
