  • This is a video that breakdown how one of Frank Zappa’s most skilled drummers, Ralph Humphrey, plays The iconic song “St. Alphonso’s Pancake Breakfast”. Make sure to DOWNLOAD THE PDF. I also include some exercises that will help you with some of the technical requirements of the piece. This piece has been one of my very favorites since I was a teenager.

This is a very good presentation Aubrey. I congratulate you on your thoroughness, your insight into some of the technical aspects of the drums and also how I always keep the musical elements in mind as I support the various phrase of the song. Indeed, I never played any of Frank's music the same way every time. However, what I like to tell my students is, 'Good music tells you what to play'.. Maybe not 'how' because that becomes a personal thing from drummer to drummer. Thanks for posting this. I will share it. All the best during this difficult and challenging time for all of us.

Thank you once again Ralph and I am honored that you are pleased with my effort. Your playing in Zappa's band and elsewhere is always so clean, beautiful, and most importantly... musical. One of my teachers got me into "Even in the Odds" many years ago and it helped me tremendously. Thanks for the inspiration and stay safe.

This is such an interesting video lesson, and to hear/read and have explained what YOU played back then is just the coolest thing EVER! When we heard you guys play live, it was so hard to focus on one thing, and as a young listener I wasn't able to absorb the whole thing as an ensemble piece...I had to watch/listen to Frank because (well, we don't have enough time here to discuss why), but, as a drummer/lover of percussion, I watched you alot...but, there was Ruth doing percussives, and, and, and...I mean the list goes on. We heard you 4 times in a short period. I ask everyone I know a question about having a ticket to any performance in the history of music, who would you go hear? I mean, you can answer Mozart, The Beatles, Little Richard, whoever...my brother has yet to answer me back, as his choices keep changing. I ALWAYS choose you, and your era of The Mothers...still gives me chills, man. THANK YOU SO MUCH! And, stay safe, wash your drumsticks, and stay at least 6 feet away from the guy with the cymbals ;) Tobias

That was actually great to hear. As much as I always loved your drumming on FZs albums, whenever I would try to play over the record I would always improvise the fills while at the same time I would try to figure out what made the essence of the tune drumwise. It is somewhat of a philosophical question and very difficult to answer as to how much can be disposed of before the identity of a tune is lost. Same with harmony and melody, anyway thank you Ralph Humphrey. And also thank you Aubrey I did love also being able to follow visually the track while hearing you play, it just adds more and more to that beautiful performance.

Thank you so much giving time to the late, great Ralph Humphrey. I was a big fan of his with the Don Ellis Orchestra, and saw him with that group, where he was paired with Ron Dunn, and sometimes with Ellis himself. He was an amazing talent

I've always loved Ralph's drumming and sound ever since I heard those Zappa records he plays on. You can't fault the later players like Vinnie Colaiuta and Chad Wackerman, but I personally just love how the drums sound and feel on the records featuring Ralph and Chester. It's a warm and juicy sound and feel. But all the drummers who worked for FZ are something of a pantheon in my mind, and I'm not even a drummer.

Hi Tom, Thanks for the kind words! I had a fantastic music teacher back in the 9th grade and he hipped us to Don Ellis. I was into Rush at the time and I thought it was incredible to hear a big band play like them! LOL! I later learned of the depth of his playing and composition. It only makes sense that Ralph cut his teeth in that band and was ready for Zappa. Thanks for checking me out! :)

@@AubreyDrumLessons I learned them by ear cause my sight reading isn't pro level. But I did figure out most of Overnight/ Apostrophe years ago. It was very daunting task for quite a while ( I did it here and there since, ya know? Not my 'job' per se. No one would ever ask me here in Cleveland to actually flesh any of that kind of thing out), But? I wanted to take up the challenge. My bands over the years have been primarily heavy original stuff. Death metal mixed with heavy rock and stuff like that so? That kind of knowledge was practical beyond belief. Gives one an edge. It all transfers over to the heavier stuff naturally. Especially the fill-in concepts and odd time signatures/ shifts. I was already into guys like Cobham and Peart, their groups from a young age, so it all came together over time. Took about a year and a half of lessons, did the concert/ jazz band thing in school for 3 years, viola for one year! Ha! But? Hey ya know? Not many guys I know/ knew that I've worked with did even just that little bit of formal stuff. Not even the most skilled players. Opens it up. Turn 44 soon. Still at it a lot so, At least I can say that. Many people quit early on due to life changes, frustration, lose interest, etc.

Good to see somebody focusing on Ralph's parts for a change, instead of Colaiuta or Bozzio. Transcribing his parts from this piece, and other tunes like RDNZL taught me a lot about the kit (as a composing non-percussionist), and there are a lot of ideas I have transferred from that experience to my own kit writing.
I published an analysis of Rollo Interior last year, including the drum transcription, but I didn't really talk about the kit, as the video focused more on analysis of the melody. I'll definitely be linking to your video as a supplementary material - these are great parts and it's good to see them properly addressed.

@8:27 Oh, it's strange that he notated it like that. Those bar divisions are totally arbitrary as far as I can tell. I mean, who knows what is what in the crazy mallet/synth intro, but counting backwards in 4/4 from the full band entrance, that intro fill is also in 4, and actually starts on a '1' and this is how I always heard it, too. Perhaps Zappa was using this needlessly difficult score as a reading test, or perhaps he simply saw Stravinsky's score for Histoire Du Soldat, which has sections (Royal March, for instance) in which a steady even meter is broken up into uneven bars which reset whenever a new voice joins in, so that the newest instrument is always notated as beginning on the 'one' (though you'd never know it by just listening).
