      Yeah they always liked to talk about "Swinging." Definitely some old school swag, and swing - inspired from that Big-Band Era. Their Father being a Jazz musician probably had something to do with that. But yeah - what Van Halen really was, at the core, was a hot-rodded Blues Band. In my opinion, the greatest Rock N' Roll Band in history!

    Around 1:53 Alex gets some funky rhythms going. Love how he shines in the midst of an iconic guitar solo. The brothers were so locked into each other. It's other worldly.

    • @D_Tuned
      @D_Tuned 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@CribNotes Agreed. There's an energy between the brothers while Eddie solos. Alex is raising it up and pushing it forward. ZZ Top has the same transitional energy when their songs change direction. "Im Bad, I'm Nationwide" is a good example of groove taking over in the latter part of a song.

    Man, you NAILED that! That is, arguably, one of the best - if not THE best - drum parts of any VH song. It's so funky. So groovy. So jazzy. The choruses are like little mini-solos. The fill @00:54 is one I've tried to master for years. My very favorite, though, is the fill right before the second chorus that even throws in some humor (which has always been one of my favorite aspects of VH and certainly AVH's playing): "DING - BOOM!".😂❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂AVH forever!=vH=

    yep Alex is a musician. his drum playing from the earliest album released, VH1 recorded in 9/77, he was 24 .. and was already very very good. the dynamics, the groove and attn to detail, the speed of the fills etc on "I'm the one" for example is stellar. there are all these videos and opinions from smf's across the fruited plain saying ridiculous things about the band members, ie questioning their talent etc.. I'm in my 50's now. here's a newsflash : the members of VH are each terrific musicians. it was common knowledge, while it was happening, (late 70's/80's) they were extremely talented guys who can play with anybody. done. they didn't select Mike 'anthony' Sobelesky bc he was adequate. these were driven, hungry, ambitious guys who wanted to play music for a living. compete and kick ass, make a lot of money, 'sieze the American dream'. you don't become that good, or be considered the biggest band in America, by accident. how many bands, ever, have members who perform solos in their concerts? much less on their first f'ing tour!? these guys could play very impressively, by themselves, on stage from the beginning. highly unusual. also from VH2 the same album "outta love" is on is "lighting up the sky".. AVH has a drum solo in it.. very good. the jazz, big band influence on him/them is obvious. *Notice old VH fans, how much tighter and even more pro-sounding they were on the recording of VH2 (that they recorded in a week in early '79), after a year of touring, than they were on VH1..and each subsequent album for that matter. by WACF in '80 they sound like one instrument imo. I got it as an adolescent when these albums were released. other kids i knew were listening to what ever rock bands they liked at the time.. I would introduce them to VH and to a person, unless they were musicians, (or becoming young musicians) all they heard was Roth..smh

      Everything you just wrote. Bingo. Ditto. I was right there with you, while growing up. The first 10 seconds I ever heard Van Halen.... it was over. Game-changer. My life was changed forever. I went back and got the first few albums after that.... and all I did for a year was listen to Van Halen! Sure - other rock and roll too. But it was all about VH for me. Still is! Greatest Rock Band in history! Period. There will never be another Edward Van Halen. Never. And Al was / is unbelievable as well. I am sure you've already read Ted Templeman's book. But just in case.. if not... you gotta read it. It's amazing. Especially the Van Halen stuff. It's just absolutely insane to think about how the guys changed so many of our lives. We are so lucky.... to have what he gave us. Compare it to the garbage crap of today.... and all I can say is... Wow!

    Top shelf, man!! So much swing exists in those first six VH records, which makes me wonder if DLR's own jazz leanings helped draw that out of Alex and Ed. It seemed to wane after his departure. Thank you for highlighting his awesome work on this track!

      That’s an interesting observation Anthony. I never really noticed that but you’re right!
