Question concerning the trigger: Does the trigger safety work both ways? I get that you cannot pull the trigger back unless you press down first, but does that also mean that the trigger will not be able to release once it is pressed complete FORWARD again?
No that's not quite correct. The trigger will close if you just release it BUT it will close the paint first and then the air. This is critical. The trigger is designed to promote perfect double action trigger technique. If you just release the trigger on a regular trigger, because the stroke of the airvalve plunger is much shorter than the needle, the air will shut first, followed by the paint. Typically this will result in a little blob of unsprayed paint to be pushed out to the tip of the needle, and it will sit there until the next time you push the trigger down and start the air, when it will represent itself as a delightful (not) spatter on your subject. Therefore, good double action trigger technique is always air on first and off last i.e. push down, pull back, push forward to stop, release. This trigger accomplishes this for you. However, please remember that we intend it to teach you GOOD technique, not use it to be lax in your technique. If you use it to be lax, then you'll have the problem describes above with regular airbrushes. And we don't intend to include this feature on our more advanced airbrushes, simply because this technique of creating spatter is USEFUL when you intend it, and so to create a trigger which makes it impossible for a mid to pro level painter would be depriving them of creative possibilities. To that end, there will also be a trigger available for the ULTRA 2024 as an aftermarket accessory which makes the trigger "free" again, so that you can explore creative options as per the above. Hope that helps to illuminate the reasons, benefits, and limitations!
@@harderairbrush Can you tell us more about the other options that will be available with the 2024 Ultra? I'm hesitant between buying it or waiting for the others until 2024.

When I started painting miniatures I used the airbrush that I got with my compressor. I almost gave up painting because the airbrush was always clogged, and I ended up breaking the nozzle when cleaning it up. Then I got an H&S airbrush, and all my problems went away! Their quality is not overrated.
really cool to see an airbrush company make it more fearless for beginners. those preset would have helped me decades ago. that said im glad i put in the work, but still, makes it easier for new comers and that's really neat!
I just love all my H&S guns. I regret I could not go to the factory when I was in Germany not so long ago. What is incredible is that from the bottom of the range to the top, all use the same needles and nozzles.
Thank you for this video. I'm getting familiar with my own air brush and I wanted to see more about how the sausage is made. I just pre-ordered your limited brush, excited to try it.
Thank you for this cool video. I've been using the Evolution since I started airbrushing in design school many years ago and our teacher told us to invest in a proper tool. It took me two month as a student to get the money together but it was so worth it to be able to learn on a proper tool. I am looking forward to the release of the Squidmar Evo because with your last release I was a little late to the party and hope I can snatch one up this time. ;)
Instantly preordered the new Ultra airbrush. I have a H&S Infinity CR Plus and adore it, but I have been wanting a new airbrush for priming/zenithal to replace my Neo Iwata (as it's a bit of a pain to clean and maintain in comparison, which puts me off using it sometimes).
I just ordered your Ultra because I love the design. Missed out on your original limited edition but didn’t miss out on this deal even though I have an infinity.
After years of using my older airbrush I finally decided to get a new one from Harder and Steenback. I got the infinity and I have to say from the point I unpacked it to now it has been an amazing experience using it. The quality of it is just simply amazing.

Harder & Steenbeck are truly exceptional: I got the limited edition H&S Squidmar airbrush, and a few months later I was away from home for a month. I left the H&S Squidmar submerged in water with my H&S Evolution. Probably due to dissimilar metal corrosion the aluminium trigger of the Squidmar fizzed away losing about 40% of its mass and becoming unusable. I emailed H&S, who posted a replacement for free (ai had offered to buy it). Unfortunately the envelope arrived with a tear where someone had stolen the replacement, I emailed H&S again and they sent another replacement trigger which arrived intact. I no longer leave my H&S Squidmar submerged at all, although my evolution is permanently stored in water. Lesson learned, dont keep an airbrish with aluminium parts submerged with a steel airbrush. Anyhoo, it was excellent customer service from H&S to twice send me a trigger.
I'm amazed by the fact that they are lathing even simple components such as the cup. I would have assumed that that was a die-stamped part or such, but to start from brass rod just to make a cup?
there's a lot to a cup... a nice shape inside so that it's easy to wipe clean with your finger and a paper towel... a perfect taper so that the fit to the body is secure and cannot leak... a return on the lip at the top so that when you move the airbrush, the paint cannot slop out of the top... having total control over the shape inside and out is very valuable to us and you :-)
It may also be cheaper to use another copy of the same machine rather than bring in a brand new machine with an entirely separate manufacturing process
I wish you would have shown the needle production in some more detail 🙂 Do you know if existing Ultras can be retrofit with the new trigger and pull-back wheel?
Unfortunately it was the only part we werent allowed to film :/ Unfortunately not, as the airbrush have been completely redesigned. Needles and nozzles can be moved around as always.
@@SquidmarMiniaturesThanks! So the needle is the secret ingredient 😅 Oh well, now I have to consider whether I buy myself a second Ultra or whether I just try to learn correct airbrushing the old fashioned way
Just got into the hobby this year and now I have ordered one of these. Excited and a bit terrified as it was quite a bit of money until i realised that I have already spent that kind of money on single miniatures already. Will look for more airbrushing videos now.
Thanks Martin! Appreciate you joining us - take a look at the painting process video on our channel specifically for this airbrush - hopefully it helps!
I want to work there so bad. Not only do I airbrush, but I also work with CNC machines (not so much the configuration side, but just a button pusher and quality control aspect).
I love my h&s infinity crplus, was suggested to me by the store owner, saying it was the best out there and I hate buying upgrades so went with it and never regretted it.
have got an Infinity CR plus, but I also have just sent off for the new beginners altra, I plan to Change the needle for a smaller one in the CR plus. Can you tell me what sizes are available and what is the best for small detail. And can I change it using the same nozzle or do I have to change that too?
I have airbrushes at every proce point. I cannot recommend squidmars H&S enough. Its by far my favorite. Its 2 years old, used and abused, still my go to for nearly everything. One of the best purchases ive made. Im happy others will get a chance to own similar ones.
Well...my first step into airbrushing begins next year (minis incoming via zombiecide white death). Just need to get tubes and compressor and paints later. Hoping the design features make this a smooth ride learning all this
Oh man, I wish this came out about a month earlier. I bought my first airbrush (an Iwata HP CS) but this Ultra would've been more ideal. I've already found myself wishing for an Infinity (with the .2mm needle) for fine detailing. I'll certainly be eagerly awaiting your release in that line!
@jameswilliams3304 Thank you for your thoughts and the suggestions. I'll check the references out. You're correct in that my current air brush is beyond my skill level. There's still a lot for me to learn. I will say that years of experience and working with a master craftsman have taught me 2 things: 1. Buy the best you can afford when it comes to your tools. Better quality typically translates to less fussing with your equipment. 2. There is always a specialized tool for specialized jobs. Could I get super fine detail with what I have? Probably. However, if there is a tool that helps me achieve my goal with less fussing about, and eases the time to progress, then it's worth it to me. Plus, if I can get a nice tool and support a content creator that I enjoy, and get a lot out of watching, then it's a double win.
Started the minipainting hobby in january. Told myself, if I still have fun with my new found hobby and am willing to learn and improve more, I will buy an airbrush after one year in the hobby. Thanks to you I broke my "promise" 😅. With shipping in Nov. I guess I came close. Hehe Thanks for the review and thanks to H&S. Liebe Grüße nach Schleswig-Holstein ;)
I love the new airbrush. It looks like an amazing tool. Unfortunately, I have a disabled right hand and I can only operate pistol trigger design airbrushes. So, I won't be able to get get this brush. However, I will tell everyone about it. I know some people who are just starting out and will be very interested. Thanks for sharing!
$132 shipped to Illinois, if anyone is wondering. To me, that's a heck of a deal. Cheaper than my 15 year old Iwata Eclipse, presumably better as well.
I ordered the Angel Giraldez AB last December and funnily enough that one, shipped from overseas, was cheaper than the stock H&S it's based off sold here in the US. And I got an extra nozzle and needle. It was $208 USD after shipping
Depends on what you're sparying and how much you spray. 10-30 minutes airbrushing per week with non toxic acrylics is fine. Enamels, solvents... and massive amounts is not something id recommend long term.
Awesome video, love to see the work that goes in behind the tools we ,, a hardway airbrush is definitely on my to buy list when the funds are there, and question where was the guy from? His accent sounded south African but he could pronounce Thors hammer flawlessly and i loved his entrance 😅😅
I legitimately couldn't find a cheap airbrush that looks as good as the one Emil showed in the intro. All of mine looked very obviously cheap and shit. They also clogged and broke so I just bit the bullet and got H&S Evolution. Had it for about a year now and I must say...the main issue with clogging was probably the nozzle cap. Round ones cause clogging. I stopped using it with Evolution and basically never have issues anymore.
Fascinating how much of it is machined. I would have figured more parts would be stamped to save money. Supposedly all the Japanese airbrush brands source their components from the same industrial pneumatic manufacturing company, Fuso-Seiki, that produced the old Olympos airbrushes and now owns the design patents. The airbrush companies have some variation in the components, assemble and fit the final product and sell it under their brand name; Iwata, Gunze, Tamiya etc. Fuso-Seiki also sells airbrushes directly under the old brand name Richpen. It would be interesting but unlikely to get a tour of their production facility.
Love the documentary on the airbrush... I would love to use a good airbrush but Im afraid of the cleaning. I bought a cheap airbrush to learn a bit but I'm not sure how to clean it properly so that I'm ready again the next time for the painting. Love the CO I think he knows his Figures himself that's so cool.
Hey mate, i've purchased 15 and 50 dollar airbrushes. And they are so much more difficult to clean than the H&S airbrushes. They can still airbrush really well but are more difficult to make the best of. So personally i think the 15 dollar airbrushes are better for professionals than beginners ;)
Ancient tip to avoid having to fuck about with cleaning beyond fill cup with water and wipe: If you have a deep enough ice cream or lunch box that has a airtight seal, and the cheapo airbrush is actually vaguely well plated (or even not, cheap brushes are often also out of brass, form of bronze or at least chrome heavy for the alu ones), just taking it apart and having all parts but the needle in the container fully filled with water (should be regulation meeting tapwater or if distilled with a bit of some cleaning agent, alternatively on that note) or window cleaner, it should be able to stay there for months without you having to bother with it. Since as long as the water level is above the parts, nothing deposits and any leftover paint generally goes to the surface and you just have to spray the water or cleaner out after re-assembly. At worst you will have to do 2-3 short blowbacks if the seal for the front is a cheap one and paint stuck to it more than the water couldnt dissolve whatever was on in paint session-1 to 2 day res-paint again scenarios. There are probably a few videos on youtube even on it. Wouldnt do it for expensive airbrushes, but the only parts on a expensive one worth anything more compared to cheapo ones when it comes to mini painting is the main valve and quality of the trigger (that it isnt flimsy).
@@ANDELE3025 Thanks for the great and awesome tip with the submerged version. I will try that with my cheap one so that the airbrushing will be fun and not the pain and then I can get a better one when I have a little bit more of a understanding how to clean a better Airbrush.
@@SquidmarMiniatures Hmm okee i will take you're advice seriously because the Ultra with the dial looks very good, and I bought one of your Edition. Now I can train to properly clean until it arrives ;) Thx for the answer and keep the good work up.
do have a watch of the painting process video on the product page and take note of the cleaning process. It's so easy that you'll barely notice it. You don't need to strip the airbrush at all. Honestly, paintbrushes are much more difficult to clean well!

Fearless - YES! That's exactly the goal - thanks for this comment!
I am looking forward to the release of the Squidmar Evo because with your last release I was a little late to the party and hope I can snatch one up this time. ;)
Awesome thank you for choosing us!
Thanks for this video! I've ordered one of the HS special edition Squidmar airbrushes, can't wait to start using it!
Man, the H&S airbrush trigger is such a simple, genius bit of design
Well thank you ;-)
Just bought your new air brush, it's my first one and really looking forward to it and using the beginner friendly features. Thanks for the video!
as a machinist these looks like fun parts to make! great video!
Their nozzle design is my fav....toss in a custom micron/creos air chamber and trigger response..oh baby. Can't wait for trigger response redesign
I just ordered your Ultra because I love the design. Missed out on your original limited edition but didn’t miss out on this deal even though I have an infinity.
Thank you very much!
After years of using my older airbrush I finally decided to get a new one from Harder and Steenback. I got the infinity and I have to say from the point I unpacked it to now it has been an amazing experience using it. The quality of it is just simply amazing.
Great to hear - thanks for choosing H&S ;-)
What an awesome look behind the scenes of my favorite airbrush maker! I hope you guys had fun In Hamburg and had the chance to see more of my beautiful hometown ❤️
Hey man! Any time you want a factory tour too, just come along :-) if you've got time for us, we've got time for you.
@@harderairbrush are you serious? I would love a tour 🤩 you are just a short S-Bahn ride away 😅
if you've got time for us, we've got time for you :-) give us a call and arrange it with me. I'm Warrick and I'd be happy to show you around@@Paint_Quest
Harder & Steenbeck are truly exceptional:
I got the limited edition H&S Squidmar airbrush, and a few months later I was away from home for a month.
Love seeing how it is done 👍
Awesome video! Just getting started airbrushing and just recieved my H&S Ultra the other day. Thanks for an interesting video :D
I wish you would have shown the needle production in some more detail 🙂
Do you know if existing Ultras can be retrofit with the new trigger and pull-back wheel?
Unfortunately it was the only part we werent allowed to film :/
Unfortunately not, as the airbrush have been completely redesigned. Needles and nozzles can be moved around as always.
@@SquidmarMiniaturesThanks! So the needle is the secret ingredient 😅
Oh well, now I have to consider whether I buy myself a second Ultra or whether I just try to learn correct airbrushing the old fashioned way
either way will work buddy - thanks for considering buying another! @@maphi8914
Send them an email ;)
I love my h&s infinity crplus, was suggested to me by the store owner, saying it was the best out there and I hate buying upgrades so went with it and never regretted it.
I love my iwatas, but that infinity sure is a beauty. I need one to paint with, and one for display.
Can you recommend an air compressor to pair with the Ultra for a beginner?? Cant wait to get mine ❤
Living 18km from H&S. If you had called, we could have had a cold beer. Next time?
table tennis at 10am most days for 30 minutes if you're interested...
Already got my order in can't wait for it to arrive!!
Just ordered mine to Mexico. The price even with shipping is right on the budget that I was ready to use and this video sold me on it.
have got an Infinity CR plus, but I also have just sent off for the new beginners altra, I plan to Change the needle for a smaller one in the CR plus. Can you tell me what sizes are available and what is the best for small detail. And can I change it using the same nozzle or do I have to change that too?
Incredible video as always! I've ordered my Squidmar Brush
Thanks for joining us!
YASSSSS! I MISSED THE LAST ONE "was at a rough $$ time" BUT SAVED UP FOR THIS ONE :D !!!
Exciting mate!
Awesome thanks SO much! Really hope you love it!
I missed out on the last Airbrush, I just ordered your 2024 version however! Looking forward to trying it out.
I have airbrushes at every proce point. I cannot recommend squidmars H&S enough. Its by far my favorite. Its 2 years old, used and abused, still my go to for nearly everything. One of the best purchases ive made. Im happy others will get a chance to own similar ones.
Thanks so much for that Noah - glad it's working hard for you!
Okay, you folks. You got me. I ordered the airbrush. WIll you please do a beginner's guide (set up, maintenance, cleaning etc.) for people like me?
We have a painting process video for this over on our channel - and then of course Emil has a number of great airbrush tutorial vids :-)
Bought one before the video ended! Awesome tour and the quality of everything looks great! Now just to wait ...
Just got mine! Thanks Emil & Lucas! :)
Fantastic little documentary, well done!
Many thanks!
This channel is underated. Love everything you do
Yes! I'm getting one! Great video as always guys
Awesome!
I LOVE my H&S Evo. Although I had it for 2 years before I decided to use it. Learning curve is still there everytime I use it. Love it though.
Factory tours are soooooo cool. I love these, makes my time working as a supply chain engineer even more satisfying haha.
Ordered. Can’t wait for it to arrive!
Well...my first step into airbrushing begins next year (minis incoming via zombiecide white death). Just need to get tubes and compressor and paints later. Hoping the design features make this a smooth ride learning all this
Keep us informed!
I’m completely new to airbrushing and I’m going to buy the new H&S ultra, but can you recommend a good beginner compressor?
Got mine yesterday! My first airbrush! ❤
Loved seeing how H&S do it, helps me better understand the cost too
This was very interesting and entertaining!
I'll be back.
@@harderairbrush Ha! Now I'm doubly excited.
@jameswilliams3304 Thank you for your thoughts and the suggestions. I'll check the references out. You're correct in that my current air brush is beyond my skill level. There's still a lot for me to learn. I will say that years of experience and working with a master craftsman have taught me 2 things:
Hehe
Thanks for the review and thanks to H&S.
Liebe Grüße nach Schleswig-Holstein ;)
Ah mega - danke schon!
Gday Emil, Can you tell us the differences between your first airbrush and the 2 new ones?
Where does it fit in comparison?
Please,,,
I love the new airbrush. It looks like an amazing tool. Unfortunately, I have a disabled right hand and I can only operate pistol trigger design airbrushes. So, I won't be able to get get this brush. However, I will tell everyone about it. I know some people who are just starting out and will be very interested. Thanks for sharing!
No worries mate, I appreciate the support 🥳
Fantastic look into how H&S make airbrushes- well done!!!!!
This was a cool video. Interesting to see all the manufacturing processes!
Another great one
Would you need a dedicated airbrush station with ventilation, or is it fine just to use at your normal desk?
Depends on what you're sparying and how much you spray. 10-30 minutes airbrushing per week with non toxic acrylics is fine. Enamels, solvents... and massive amounts is not something id recommend long term.
Awesome video, love to see the work that goes in behind the tools we ,, a hardway airbrush is definitely on my to buy list when the funds are there, and question where was the guy from? His accent sounded south African but he could pronounce Thors hammer flawlessly and i loved his entrance 😅😅
Proudly Zimbabwean!
just ordered. Squidmar team is the best.
Thank you!
Another great vid 👍 keep it up bro
I just bought the squidmar edition! I already have the infinity and I love it.
Put in my order today, the hype is real 😄
Fascinating video and insights - it's why Ive used H&S for a number of years. The 2024 range take superb to the next level ✌️😊💜👍
As my first Airbrush I bought the H&S Squidmar Edition and never had any regrets. For almost two years it serves my deeds flawless...
Happy you love it mate!
Great - thank you!
Ordered mine yesterday, I can’t wait to get it in my hands 😁
Awesome - thank you!
I stopped using it with Evolution and basically never have issues anymore.
take a look at the painting process video on the product page - hopefully it's helpful! And thanks for being an H&S customer!
Bought your last H&S Squidmar airbrush and it is top tier! My best airbrush by far.
@@ANDELE3025
Thanks for the great and awesome tip with the submerged version. I will try that with my cheap one so that the airbrushing will be fun and not the pain and then I can get a better one when I have a little bit more of a understanding how to clean a better Airbrush.
@@SquidmarMiniatures
Hmm okee i will take you're advice seriously because the Ultra with the dial looks very good, and I bought one of your Edition. Now I can train to properly clean until it arrives ;)
Thx for the answer and keep the good work up.
do have a watch of the painting process video on the product page and take note of the cleaning process. It's so easy that you'll barely notice it. You don't need to strip the airbrush at all. Honestly, paintbrushes are much more difficult to clean well!
Quality control is where most costs are. As others have said, these sort of videos are fascinating and interesting.
I have four H&S ‘brushes,love them!
Thanks for choosing our airbrushes, Grey Wolf... But five does have a nice ring to it...😉
Missed out on the Squidmar Evolution, but I’m not missing out on this one! Order’s in! Can’t wait to see the Squidmar Infinity! Hopefully it has the same bomb-proof coating the regular Ininity line comes with!
I'll be back.
@@harderairbrush I'll be working on improving my airbrush skills enough using the Ultra by then to justify the Infinity. :D :D
I want the infinity version but I guess I also need an all rounder airbrush so I'll sponsor Squidmar
Infinity version coming in two months 🥳
I just got the new ultra. It's high quality and 100 bucks are not too expensive. I'm excited for the new features and hoor I have the time to try it out on the weekend.
