The only thing I find odd is the comment on the alarm. If someone works at the same time every day, it’s not hard to create an alarm that goes off every day. Doesn’t mention that when they check the alarm, it was one that goes off every day or was created for just that day. The rest of it is pretty obvious. The guy seemed off during the interrogation. JMO.

@@3BK235Y they always try fake crying… why?
“He cares about his spiritual life. He’s a devoted Christian.” I am so utterly sick and tired of this being a blanket defense that someone who is spiritual or religious is automatically a good person.
I thought that was an odd comment as well. I mean, most prisoners in the US are Christians too, I would think. How does that make someone less likely to be guilty? 😂
He's anything but a devoted Christian.
You can be spiritual demon possessed. By the devil
But he is not a Christian period
True that !! Dismissing responsibility & accountability to another entity seems the norm in USA anymore! godLives- jebusForgives- & theDevil madeMe doIt- Repent, Repeat - What were the christian crusades to begin with? Couldnt be more vicious than that !
Precisely! I was raised in evangelical chri$tianity, therefore when I hear those words, they immediately cause me to deem them more suspicious!
He cried so fake during the interrogation. But he calmly chatted about video games with the responding officer, even though he 'just found' his wife dead. Creepy man.
Right😂😭it sounded so fake. Crying like a child who wants attention.
@@TanieceGray 😉 Exactly! It's so easy for us mothers to spot fake crying! 😆
exactly!!!
Murdering man!!
He did, but have u ever had paramedics at ur house? It takes a long time. The police started the conversation. That tells me how long it was taking. Maybe they did it to entrap him? We can't be cool with that. What if he's innocent? Or the next person is? I think he did it but it's wild how that's the focus instead of WHY the COP asked him what he played. Edit: As someone whose mom used to live just an hour away from Hays, I DO commend these cops on their digital detection.👏👏👏
The minute a 911 call begins with a story instead of "help" and address of the emergency, the likelihood of guilt skyrockets.
That’s a great point.
I don’t know if I agree with this whatsoever. I’ve heard plenty of 911 calls during which the caller begins with what’s happened / happening. People react in incredibly different ways to traumatic events. Some cannot even get out any words. I can see what you mean if the caller goes into a detailed story that states their alibi & tries to make themselves seem totally not part of whatever happened, including immediately blaming someone else. Nevertheless, let’s say there was a robbery the wife was killed while the husband was out (having come home to discover the body). It wouldn’t be surprising if the husband (the caller) began with, “It seems like there’s been a break-in or robbery at my home & my wife is dead.” Something else- some people act surprisingly calm in the face of a traumatic event, like discovering a violent death. It’s likely because shock has set in, & they shut down, relaying their observations in acute & calm detail. We expect people to cry & scream “help,” but that’s just not always true. As I’ve shown, there are many reasons why your statement isn’t necessarily correct; it’s far too complex & people react far too individually to make any assured comprehensive judgment.
The police consider it a huge red flag when a 911 caller offers up theories of what happened.
Every single time ,without fail. I've heard a ton of 911 calls and it's always that way .
That's a darn brilliant point. 🔥
It's not vanity that makes women less likely to die by suicide - it's a desire to not traumatize the loved ones who will find them or leave behind a horrific mess.
Ah so you know more than a professional? Damn they missed out hiring you for the case!😂
@Annie497If that were 💯 true I don’t think suicide notes would be a thing.
@Annie497 Some people do want to hurt those they leave behind too, though. And less lethal methods allow more possibility for "error", and also can be slower leaving time to reconsider.
I agree. Women in general are more likely to care about the mental image their death would leave for others.

So nobody tested the husband for gunshot residue? I thought this was standard operating procedure in cases like these...
Blows my mind when they don’t do that. I mean hello!
@@cholieandresa seriously, could've had a slam dunk case, instead leaves us with many questions.
He said he picked up the gun because he considered killing himself for a second. Even if they had found his fingerprints on the gun or found GSR on his hands, he already had an excuse in place.
Hays, Kansas population 21,000 😆
@@hrmtty His prints on the gun and GSR are two seperate things. You can't explain GSR on your hands if you didn't shoot the gun.
It’s absolutely heartbreaking when they talk about the little place she identified for her business. 😢
The instant he said he picked up the gun, I knew that was him covering his tracks if they found his fingerprints on the gun
Nah. It would be normal if his prints were on it. Ofc if its blood prints, then he touched it afterwards. But that can also happen.
Its odd that he placed the gun back on her though. Thats not something you'd likely do. But not strong evidence, or evidence at all. Its just one in a number of things thats uncommon and may raise suspicion. But its not evidence.
@@StofStuiverYou’re dense. It’s evidence he handled the gun.
The police should have immediately tested their hands for gunshot residue at the scene to determine who pulled the trigger.
Yup, and he said it right away, establishing innocence and offering info he wasn't asked for at the time.
You can fake fingerprints but not GSR. Both their hands should've been tested for GSR and that would've told the whole story. Either she had it or not.
He saw other documentaries where the murderer didn’t cry while interrogation and it got pointed out. So he thought by himself: I will really REALLY cry!!!
I thought the same thing.
😂😂😂😂😂😂 go away !
This case is not funny, but your comment 🤣
Her phone was plugged in also. Why plug it in and worry about charging your phone if you're fixing to off yourself?
Yes, but probably he didn't set alarm than. She had this alarm permanently, every day.
Yeah, and she supposedly gets up to go get the gun, lies back down and shoots herself next to her sleeping husband. Such BS.
@@pixi2209 Same thought on that part of the argument. I don't set my alarm daily. My phone is set to always go off at "x" time for M-F and a different time on the weekend.
Very good point...
@@KatieBellinoThey could’ve looked into her phone and seen that it was actually set that day and not a routine alarm. Investigators aren’t morons, and they look into these details.
One thing all these cases have in common is that the victims are killed by what they tend to fear most, whether it be guns, strangulation/any form of suffocation, being assaulted, being poisoned, etc. Any other true crime fan noticing that pattern?
Yep, just watched one where the girl had a fear of fire and was burned to death
Noticed ✓ 😒
Yes.
Just watched one biggest fear was being kidnapped. That night she died everyone failed her and she was out late at night and got kidnapped

Yeah he'll get plenty of warmth in prison, but I doubt he'll get comfort lol
Thank you Judge for giving him life & no parole for 50 yrs.
The fact that this man went and bought a sex doll after killing his wife. Disgusting.
🤮
I’m a guy and yeah… that’s a no go if you are a real man 😂
Why? That’s what his wife was!
The fact that he used HER LIFE INSURANCE to buy it...even more gross!
Judge not lest ye be judged. Let the one among you without sin cast the first stone. What do you do in your sex life, watch cute cat videos?
the second he said he "thought about putting the gun to my head and killing myself" I knew he killed her. There is NO way you would even think that for a second if your spouse shot themselves, you would call 911 and start CPR. He rehearsed that line thinking it sounded like something someone devastated would say, but it didn't match the situation at all.
And yet there is someone else who commented that she lost her husband the same way and was so devastated she contemplated the same thing. None of these emotional responses indicate guilt or innocence. It's supposed to be evidence driven. His words saying he put the gun back down on her and his searches on the life insurance and him lying about her doing it/military lies are the indicators of guilt that I would consider convicting him for but this is not a slam dunk case.
People living in the city of Hays should be proud of these hard-working cops and prosecutors.
As a lifelong Hays resident, I am! They did a marvelous job!
Detectives don't get enough praise. They are heroes!
I agree, but the police and/or coroner should have tested their hands for gunshot residue to determine who pulled the trigger.
Absolutely!!! The fact that the Coroner ruled it as suicide didn't stop them further investigating. Well done.
When cops are so often inept and uncaring, these guys really are standouts. Very commendable!! We need more folks like this!
Not just the detective who should have had Colbys hands tested for for gunshot residue, the Coroner should have tested her hands for gun shot residue before saying its a suicide. These guys are dinosaurs . Do your job, procedure. Just testing for gun shot residue would have helped the prosecution or something

Some time ago I read a flyer for battered and abused women and I always took that advice seriously because it's sound advice.
1. Never tell an abuse that you're leaving. Gather your documents and a few clothes and leave. You can take the rest later with a police escort.
2. the three weeks (aprox.) after leaving an abusive partner is the most dangerous time of your life. Leave to a place you know he's not going to look for you . Not your parents's house, not your friend's house that he know of. Lay low for at least three weeks after. Don't go to places where you routinely go to. It's not fair that you have to give up on yet more things, but it's better to be alive than sorry.
3. Gather evidence. Make a folder with photos if you have any, texts, theats, damanges if he damaneged your property in any way. The first response in a situation like this is to block, change your number, etc. but if you can still keep your old number and record the threatening texts etc and angry voice mails he sends you, that would be awesome. Taht will help you get a restraining order in place. You can even leave that phone number with someone you trust and get a second phone number for your personal use.
And this is my personal addition, turn off your location on all social media apps, and even on your phone all together. If you could get off social media for a while that would be in your interest to not give your location or schedule away.
Stay safe girls!
Thank you for taking the time to write this all out. Fantastic advice 👍🏻

You can also go to a women’s shelter they are not allowed to come near you and they have everything you need food companionship from w0men going through the same things

I'm saddened that the coroner believed it was a suicide and didn't even check for gun residue. He doesn't take his job seriously. It hinders the investigation because of his pride.
Actually, if you watched the whole episode you'd know that the investigators didn't properly relay the circumstances surrounding the death to the coroner.
@@harlieschmidt5945 apparently he didn’t ask either. Just wrote her off and signed his name.
In my profession, if I don’t have the information I need, I’m expected to request that information. And my job doesn’t have anywhere near the impact that his does. While he was being professionally negligent, then after the information was brought to him, too egotistical to change the cause of death even to undetermined, the husband could very well have killed again.
@@harlieschmidt5945still . . .
@@judyadams8296yep. He seemed lazy
This coroner is incompetent and too stupid to acknowledge it.
He was whining throughout the entire police interview. He's trying to put on an act. Innocent people don't do that.
Yep. Usually the jury is not supposed to consider that type of evidence but it's difficult to ignore how poorly he imitated a crying person.
My thoughts exactly.
Yes they do. I can't tell you how many times I've seen "tHaT's NoT hOw InNoCeNt PeOpLe AcT" only for the person to actually be innocent. Anyone who thinks they can judge someone by behavior is always going to be proved wrong
I’m only a few minutes in with no clue as to whether Colby is guilty or not. But, this I know: if a suspect cries, people view it as fake, lack of tears is viewed as callous and uncaring. Honestly, IMO, their state immediately after the incident is the least likely indicator of guilt or innocence. When innocent, tears are naturally going to flow; when guilty, the person also has multiple reasons for legitimate tears.
Absolutes are rarely true, though. Or do you know all innocent people and how they cry?
You never ask a defence lawyer whether her/his client is guilty or not.
So they never checked his or Kristans hands for gunshot residue, and nobody mentioned that she didn’t leave a suicide note?
This story and her love for her aunt, uncle & cousin is very touching..
Coroner should’ve ruled ‘Undetermined’ for at least the time a solid investigation would take.
Agreed and he really took a beating from Erin Moriarty at 38:36 with what he did not consider like the size of the gun. I'm not sure about the other non science stuff like "searches on insurance" and "an online affair". The coroner is a scientist so why would the police say "hey Doc this clown was having an affair or he made a ton of dough on insurance". That could change the coroners objectivity. It was stupid to not consider the size of the gun.
Exactly. But The other evidence they said should have changed his report should have no factor into it.
why would he do that tho ? if he genuinely believed it was a suicide why would he wait ? a coroner doesn’t factor in what the investigators find out into their report. it’s completely based on the body and nothing else. that’s why it’s the office of the medical examiner.. not the Medical/Crime Investigation Examiner.
I thought the same thing when I watched this.
A coroner isn’t even a medical doctor in many cases, he/she is typically an elected official. Whereas A medical examiner is a board certified forensic pathologist or a degree in another medical specialty.
I also thought if it was a violent, unexpected, or suspicious death a coroner attended the scene, but the person was autopsied by a ME. It’s weird Kristin’s case wasn’t handled by a ME.
He lied about his time in service, something that could easily be researched yet he did it anyway. He thinks he could get away with lying because people always believed him.
“He’s a devoted Christian, he just doesn’t have it in him” , well that’s good enough for me. Case dismissed.
Right? 😆
He's a devout Christian having an online affair. Those things aren't supposed to go together.
The detective in this case is an awesome man of God and a personal friend. As for the murderer, Jesus warned… “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first.” Luke 11:24-26
do they even hear themselves talk?! 😭🤦🏽♀️
Yep good enough for me. A good Christian lad could never stage so.ething like this. He wouldn't be a suspect flat out.
the coroner saying he believes the husband because there were no signs of "THEM BEATING AT EACH OTHER" is misogynistic af
he didn’t just make that up. 2 sentences before the sentence that triggered you he said I LOOKED AT THE BODIES FOR INJURIES, PAST AND PRESENT. 🤦🏾♂️

But i can understand you are so lonely you think of such options. Not for sex, but to have something there that resembles a person. That you can say hi to or something.

The medical examiner is a joke. That police department needs to find a new doctor for that position.
I take it you're not from around here... It's the other way around.
he was a coroner, not a medical examiner. there’s a difference.
coroners have experience in their fields (bodies).
medical examiners have that on top of medical degrees and licenses to practice medicine.
Well its like this. The man calls 911 and reports his wife sh##t herself next to him in bed. That pretty well gives the coroner 2 choices: cause of death self inflicted or the husband who is a blubbering mess and a devout church going Christian the one who did it. He was present so no 3rd party intruder. I can see not allowing for any present unusual visible trauma to the body a verdict of suicide by firearm. The only other would be the husband did it essentially. Not enough to go out on a limb.on a death certificate which must be signed off in a timely matter.
Agree. He seems senile
Actually @GamerMason123 a medical examiner should determine the manner of death without knowing if a person had a bubbly personality or not.
The abandonment by her mother absolutely explains her getting into a relationship with an abuser and/or narcissistic abuser

He's not a real ME. He's just a coroner . That requires no medical background.
@@meghanmisaliarreading these comments I was very surprised how many people think they’re the same thing. It’s mindboggling how much people think they know and state such information as fact and it’s completely wrong.
Just like life insurance info a few were posting about. I truly wish people would even just do a double check before posting and sharing incorrect information, but stating it as fact.
Why would anyone do a suicide naked ? That doesn't make sense
Men do, often. For women, it rarely occurs.
Clearly You have NO IDEA what You are talking about because MANY People do.
@@Moremoney4ewunot women.
It happens. She also wasn't naked. People set themselves on fire. Stab themselves multiple times. Shoot themselves and wound themselves then shoot themselves again.
Be glad you don't understand it.
@commonsense571 yes, women do and quite a lot.
RIP little Kristen. How much she suffered in her short life.💔
All I needed to hear was the husband called 9-1-1 to report his wife's "suicide" to know who killed her. The rest is all episode filler. 99.999% of spouse suicides are murders
When the wife is the injured party
Beware the megachurch worship music singing and dancing on the altar type folks. I'm an elderly saved bible believer who definitely realizes that we never really know what goes on in another person's mind, even when he or she might be sitting right next to us on Sundays or any other day.
That "pastor's" idea of a "worship service" bears no resemblance to Biblical teaching. He attracts egomaniacs who simply attend in order to "perform."
Sometimes the defense attorneys are as sick as their clients.
It's always the controlling male in the relationship. If he can't keep her by his side, he kills her because he won't let her leave and live her own life.
Tbf I've known some very narcissistic, abusive & controlling women who were absolutely awful to their BFs/husbands.
It seems he was feeling fine without her.
He wanted the cash.
@@H.Liddell What does that have to do with anything? There's always someone in the comments of these wife-killing episodes saying "lots of women are horrible, blah blah blah". ABC News states: "About 34% of the women killed in the U.S. in 2021 died at the hands of an intimate partner, according to the Bureau of Justice statistics. Only about 6% of the men killed in the U.S. in 2021 died from intimate partner homicide". Women are not killing men at the same rate that men are killing women.
@ZionistDeceptionExposed Jodi Arias comes to mind
You can look and listen to this guy and see he’s a creep…. Guilty as charged.
The “devoted Christian” is the first person I suspect.
Right
The guy never stopped the phony crying
Suicidal people often hide it well. They can be some of the kindest, cheeriest people. That said, in this case, I don't think she committed suicide

Also Colby: There's some interesting places they send you being with intel.

Mental illness can be devastating. I’m not saying he didn’t do it, but I AM saying that there are plenty of examples of people who were smiling the day before they took their own life. Plenty of suicidal people look like they’re thriving and content.
@Annie497are you disagreeing or agreeing? Because you’re saying the same thing she said.
@Annie497it’s funny how in your rebuttal, you did the same thing you did the first time 😂😂 tried to sound smarter by using more words while also saying the exact same thing she did, you did, and did again 😂😂🤦🏾♂️
Yeah I put a fake smile on my face everyday and people don't know how close I am to ending it
@@colinrauch PLEASE DONT. You have value, simply because you’re human, and God created us.
@@colinrauchI can say and promise you that I do. You're in a very dangerous place now. 3 * survivor very serious attempts. Gave no warning, acted normal because I did not want to be stopped. First two failed and I'm offering absolutely no details ever encourage this. Please take yourself directly to the nearest emergency room tell them what is happening if you have just tried and failed and be very very specific. Go voluntary and stay until you and the doctors agree that you are no longer a danger to yourself. The third time I survived by accidental text to co-worker. He sent EMTs and they kicked out the door. Again no details but it resulted in a 3-week medically induced coma and of 5% survival prognosis. I woke up saw the pain on my family's face. I made a vow to God to never do it again ever no matter how bad. I went to a lot of therapy I took a lot of medication and if I come even close I run don't walk for help. I am not saying to do any of this. I'm not telling you this story to inspire you. Although I did work in psychiatry myself, inpatient... That info is not clinically appropriate to share it with anyone under my care. Absolutely forbidden personal info and boundary violation. Only the doctor and that person's treatment team and plan. But if I see seemingly artificial calm and smiles from a patient I'm worried about... My blood runs cold and I inform anyone on duty to please put extra observations I got a bad feeling about this. Safety is everything. They put their life in our hands. We owe it to that person and their family. I hope this is helpful advice and please please please please please don't do it. Thank you, Detective Burkholder, and other determined officials... you doggedly went against the tide and fought for justice.
Regarding her having set her alarm for the next morning: no one sets their alarm each day for waking up; we set it to repeat automatically on whichever days we need it to activate.
I set it each day.
I set my alarm every night. I thought everyone did it that way. Interesting.
@@DeniseRene407why do that when you only have to do it once? Unless her shifts were on wildly different days and times, its easier to have alarms set for the same days and you can edit the times if needed

All liars and cheaters eventually get caught.
And I'm relieved that the justice system doesn't favor defense attorneys. I understand the importance of their job but ugh, they want jurors to be absolutely stupid and have no common sense. It's infuriating.
No, they want the prosecution to have to do their job. If the justice system doesn't favor defendants, then it's not operating the way it was designed. Presumption of innocence is important.

For the most part, most folk usually think that this is how a high percentage of people are. You'll be lucky to come across someone that judges and treats you and people in the light that they walk in. You would think hat such behavior is a norm (especially due to one's age and overall experiences. Nah......
Oh so you want a system where the prosection always wins and the state can imprison anyone they want on no evidence?
Devoted Christian, military with a bunch of firearms in the house, are not helping him at all!
"Of all the people I know, the last person that would...."
"The thought of her hurting herself..."
Literally the exact thing grieving relatives always say when loved ones take their lives.
Being smiley, helping others and seeming generally happy has literally nothing to do with it, why is that still not something people understand in 2024 ?

Coroner was too quick to believe the man!
Actually no, if you watched the whole episode, he explained that the investigators didn't properly relay all of the information regarding the circumstances and evidence surrounding Kristen's death.
@@harlieschmidt5945 coroner covering up his incompetence by telling the world police did not share with him any information. and coroner too phucking shy to ask.
My thought too.
My mother worked for suicide prevention with our state for over 15 years. Watching these really baffle me because people try to rationalize the sometimes non-rational. Speaking specifically to the woman’s comment on ‘she smiled in every picture’. Not ruling this case, just stating that means nothing. People are amazing at hiding pain.
I was trained in suicide prevention and you are exactly right in your estimations
This is why you always get a lawyer if the police want you to go downtown
Unfortunately I know someone who seemed like they would be the last person to commit suicide, a hyper organized and responsible person who left a massive mess for all the people around them, spiritually and literally. They had spent the evening before with friends and gave no sign. So not seeming like a person who would do that means nothing.
Indeed
Yep thought the whole Forensic Psychologist report was bogus.
Holy Jesus that prosecutor’s handling of the gun… 😮
People preach about being Christian all the time, and guess what. Priests and preachers end up guilty a lot. Most of them see it as a good cover up. 48hrs alone have posted many cases as such. The fact that’s why she believes he didn’t do it is insane
