This is an amazing piece, who'd have thought it would end up like that from what you started with! I couldn't help notice that when you lift your canvas up the layered old paint on your desk top looks like a Jackson Pollack piece, lol. And they go for millions!
Love this piece and seeing how it all came together, especially seeing the end result at the start. Fascinating to watch. I love the black and white stripes. It was interesting seeing how you built up the colours over and around the striped areas to give them depth. I'll have to try having a play with this technique. I really enjoy using various things to create texture, so much fun.
Thank you so much for your kind words! It was a joy to experiment and play around with different textures in this one. Let me know how it goes when you give this a try. 😊
I was really curious to see how this one ended up, the tension between the straight edges and lines was interesting, then you turned the painting, and it was ooh wow! Cheers!
Thank you Howling! I was really curious to see where it was going to end up as well 😂 I had a general idea, but as I said in the video, at one point I was winging it. Thanks for watching! P.S. I'm looking forward to your next video. Cheers!
@@chrisloudart As always I've enjoyed watching you create a painting that is beautiful and interesting. I'm going to be doing one this week, I've been moving my mum's stuff so been a bit tunnel visioned she's going to be moving in with me until the granny flat is built. Cheers!
Yes, I instantly thought “Beetlejuice” when I saw the promo pic. I love this piece, although several times I was thinking, “Stop, it’s perfect!”, but the final is better than any of the intermediate stages.
You've inspired me to keep going with a box that I started painting for the februllage 'Sculpture' prompt; I got about 4 layers in and decided I didn't like it -- and didn't know where to go next; But, I will pick it back up and add a few more layers! I do like experimenting with the paint on/wipe off method to see what happens.
Hey MC! I'm so glad this has inspired you to pick up where you left off. You've got this! I'm right there with you-I love playing with adding and wiping away to see what emerges.
Hey Dawna! I had the same thought. I'm going to work on a couple more companion pieces in the same style and torn poster art was on my mind for one of these. I'll have to make my own torn poster, but that sounds like a fun challenge. 😂
Chris, I happened to be scrolling and passed by this cover of yours. I had not seen this one and thought it was an ad for the Wizard of Oz, because of the Wicked Witch’s striped stockings! I love this one so much! The film was created just a couple blocks away from my home I grew up in!
Hey Susie! The Wizard of Oz is exactly what my wife saw when she saw it. Stripes stockings and in the shape of a tornado. That's so cool, where was it filmed? I'm assuming in CA somewhere.
@@chrisloudartyes Chris, I was born in Sunny Cal in the great town of Culver City. In the corner of Jefferson and Sepulveda there’s a huge sign that reads: Welcome To Movie Town, USA! The Wizard of Oz and hundreds more were filmed just blocks from my home growing up in CC. Many of the little people in the film were locals whom I knew well as a child. The film means a whole lot to me as we all celebrated its history and historical value to the film industry. Your painting sure struck a chord in my heart, Chris, it’s just beautiful.
@@SusannaRossoWolf Thank you so much! It's such a wonderful and seminal film historically. What an incredible experience for you to be around the area and get to know some of the people who were in it.❤️
Absolutely fascinating😊... love the orange netting. Your creativity is so inspiring Chris and the way you bring it all together layer by layer... this is such a good demo.
I love the texture of this and how you got all the paint I n the nooks and crannies, esp by going back.over it with a baby wipe. I also like how you spritz with water and then pull up some of the paint. I'm big on texture as well. I start with a collage base usually of different papers, most of which is my own art ripped up or gelli prints. I love to add textured papers such as mulberry papers. I need to try the orange wrapping net because that is a cool effect. I sometimes use plaster of Paris mixed with acrylic mediums, acrylic medium itself, flexible modeling paste, glass bead gel, fiber paste, stencils, stamps, fabrics, beads, buttons, ribbons, distress oxide inks etc. You can get so much texture with just tissue paper alone. This one of yours reminded me of an intuitive mixed media painting that I made with similiar step like theme, which I called, "Ascension." I subscribed. I enjoy your style.
Thanks so much, Cassandra! I love using old gelli prints and 'failed' paintings on paper as a collage base. There are so many ways to create amazing textures. You've given me a few that I need to try-especially mixing plaster of Paris with acrylic mediums. I've watched people do that, but I've never tried it. It sounds like you do quite a bit of interesting things with texture 😊
I was thinking about ways to make a 3D map for an imaginary land for an art project and your approach shows me this way of playing with texture is definitely an option!
Thanks Kris! I get it. I wasn't a big fan of yellow ochre for the longest time, but I've since realized how versatile it is. I find it mixes well with other colors and when you're looking for a more muted and neutral palette, yellow ochre and white are a must for me.
Found you recently, like your teaching style and your voice is very good listening to, and great work you do. New subscriber here, regards from Iceland
1 - one of the greatest movies 2 - added bag of Oranges to my cart 3- such and awesome piece of art - it made such a huge difference in depth with the out lining Thank you for sharing and inspiring us all
This is wonderful, very much enjoyed seeing it. I like how the charcoal added depth. Do you then seal the whole surface with matt medium to prevent the charcoal from smudging?
Thanks Kathy!❤️ Great question-I'll give the areas with charcoal a quick spray with a fixative and then after that dries I'll varnish the whole piece. I could use the gel medium to fix it as well, however, there's a chance the charcoal might smudge a little with that. Either would work.
Really enjoyed watching your process and I really like the final piece. I'm curious... How do you prepare the canvas (front and/or back side) to support the weight of the multiple layers?
Thanks so much, Estella! All I did with this one was gesso it as I do with a regular painting. Since this was primarily light weight paper/cardboard and acrylic paint, it wasn't much heavier from a normal painting on canvas. If I go much bigger, I will probably switch and use large cradled wood panels.
I love all the textures in this abstract. All my abstract painting have texture. I don't dare to add collage to my painting. Will they last in the painting if you sale them?
Thank you, Nilda! Yes they will last. I use acrylic gel medium to fix the items to the canvas and let it fully dry. I've never had any problems with paintings/mixed media art staying together.😊
Thanks!
Thank you, Bella! Your kindness is much appreciated ☺️
