I dug into forums trying to solve my problem, but no luck! My top left allen bolt on the air intake cover is spinning freely and won't come out. I fear the previous owner may have damaged it. Any suggestions? I can't remove the air filter and I'd tried everything short of cutting out the filter to get to the damaged nib. Please help me EDIT: Took another crack at it this morning. I got frustrated with babying it and I wound up just yanking it off with the bolt still in the mold! The allen bolt is screwed into a square looking nut which is set in plastic. At the base of it, there's a round metal piece that keeps it set in the plastic molding. If the plastic cracks however, it will spin freely. I plan on replacing the broken assembly with a large expanding well nut. Might even slap on some holy water to keep this particular maintenance demon at bay. If anyone has any questions (even if it's YEARS from now) reply to this comment! I'll do my best to help you.
@@vozanderson8665 Remove all the Allen bolts, Then pull the cover toward you as you unscrew. So there will be pressure on the inner nut. When you do remove cover glue nut into you cover with PL 400 construction adhesive. use the premier heavy duty. Let us know how this works out.
@@TwoWheelRocco Thank you for the super fast response! I wound up pulling the entire thing out. Nut and all. When that was done, I put a set of vicegrips on the damaged nut and took out the allen bolt. For now I'm running the bike with an allen bolt missing since the cover still feels very snug without it. I plan on either gluing the bolt to the cap just as a cosmetic or finding a well nut that will help hold it in place so it can still serve some function. Thanks for all your videos! The rest of the tune up went off without a hitch. Gonna service the coolant and the carb here soon once I get some time off for it.
I just picked up a 2004 VTX 1300c with 1600 miles on it. This bike is very clean, but it sputtered when I took off from a start. Even after it warmed up, it was not smooth taking off from a standstill. I watched this video and did what was shown. After putting it back together, I fired it up and took it for a ride. It was an amazing difference! It is so smooth and there is no hesitation taking off. Thanks for your clear videos. I am not a mechanic, but with your help, I pulled off a successful job. Thanks!!!
Hi Two Wheel Rocco, this is for any new subscribers. Two Wheel Rocco is the real deal. He does everything step by step, and he will respond if you have any questions. Thanks for all the videos.
You seem so personable and knowledgeable from years of experience. Thank you for the videos they've helped me tune mine back to new! I recently bought myself an 07 VTX1300C for my first bike. 15k miles no major issues for $3500 but it needed some TLC. It runs and feels so much better! So much fun to put work on the machine. Makes you proud. Keep up the good work Rocco!
Love your background music, stones and all the good stuff from the 60' & 70's. I agree with you, the VTX is a great motorcycle. The engine is almost bomb proof. Keep the oil changed and the plugs clean and new, some carb cleaner and you are good to go. I worked in my dad's gas station in the early 50's, and he taught me that keep it clean and don't mess with what works, you will have many happy miles no matter what the engine is. I ride a 2004 1300, have around 40,000 miles now. Still runs strong. I'm approaching 80 this July and hope I can swing my leg over for one more ride, or more, who the hell knows. It's the best mental therapy in the world. Thanks for your great videos. Ride safe.
I agree with you 100%. 60s in the 70s was a great time to grow up and yes I was taught to don't fix something that's not broke. Thank you for your kind words and all your support Steve and may we ride for many more years. Ride safe and have a great day.
Just picked up a VTX 1300 as my first bike, thank you for these informative videos on doing some basic maintenance. As a mechanic myself it still helps to see something done before trying it yourself. I also noticed you only have a few videos on the VTX, goes to show that they don't need to be repaired or tuned up as often as a Harley.
Rocco, I've spent the past few weekends watching your carb cleaning and tuneup video's and repairing my VTX1300S & ACE750. You do a great job w/ straight forward info and steps. Bada-bing, bada-boom! Good as new! What was a horrible low acceleration back fire in the airbox is now a smooth revving VTX. My ACE couldn't run w/ any throttle. Carbs looked like someone put sawdust in there! Thanks again for all your help and saving me hundreds of NJ Steal-er repair rates!
Thank you for the video because I'm also going to have to do the same tune up. One of the previous owners yanked the rear right spark plug cable and broke it. They fixed it with electrical tape and it held for more than 3 years and at least 10,000km until last week. I thankfully bought the same spark plug boot puller tool that you are using and now waiting for the rear right spark plug cable to reach my dealer. I can't wait to change the cable and boot and carry on the tune ups.
I normally when removing the side covers place them on a piece of cardboard to prevent scratching, you could never be too careful. Great job on the video and explaining the appropriate tools.
Rocco, I am generally not mechanically inclined, but after my 2004 VTX 1300 ran into stalling / loss of power issues I watched your tune up video and felt comfortable addressing the issue myself. Great detail and walked through all the steps to rectify my problem! Thanks!
thank you. my guy is no longer on this earth, ( 1 yr,9 days )so i'm trying to learn what I can. he used to write on the honda boards. wish now i'd paid more attention. guess it just made me so proud that he knew so much, and fearlessly tackled all things mechanical..inviting counsel when needed, like electrical...something I seem to be having trouble with now. I have an 04 1300, searching for a good and honest mechanic, since there's no shop nearby. :/
Your videos are great, thanks. I wanted to share that I figured out what was wrong with my VTX a simple fix to why it would not stay idle and throttle. I had high unleaded gas in the throttle and that was it. I put in the lowest unleaded and change instantly. Amazing
Great video. Quick ?.. the guy I bought my bike from painted the air filter housing (the outside black part only - nothing inside). Would that affect air intake or the running of the bike?
Happy to help. I would get the VTX air filter for in that box, I believe it will make a difference. Thank you for watching and all your support FFLL.Ride safe and have a great day. Let us know how it works out.
This was terrific!! I just bought a 2006 with only 9487 miles and I'm not Mr. Mechanic. This was super clear!!! Thank you so much. Any tips for someone not mechanically inclined? Been riding for 45 years but little wrench experience.
Hi Rocco, after watching this guide many times over the last week to get my confidence up to DIY I performed the tune up on my Honda Fury today. I restarted the bike a few times & rode the neighborhood a bit. It felt right. I parked it and cleaned up. Roughly 15 minutes later I attempted to start it without success. I'm not sure where things went wrong. My 1st thought is that I didn't let it run long enough after using the carb cleaner &/or sprayed too much carb cleaner. The problem is I don't know what I don't know in terms of troubleshooting & process of elimination. I have organized a bike rally fundraiser for this Saturday (Nov 11, 2017.) My brother killed himself in October 2017. Kiersten (age 20) was a stay-at-home now widowed & my niece Willow (8 months) lost her father. This rally supports the suicide awareness movement & hopefully some financial support. I hope I'm catching you with some time to help me get this beast rumbling. I have 48 hours & I need to decide if it's something I can DIY or get it into the mechanic ASAP. Thanks, Norman
Two Wheel Rocco Thanks for calling me yesterday. The process of elimination wins again! 1. I removed a spark plug & confirmed the gap of .035 2. Before putting the plug back in I connected the cable to the spark plug & attempted to start the bike while watching the gap for a spark. NO SPARK! 3. I connected the trickle charger overnight 4. Today it started I'm happy the problem turned out to be very easy for me to DIY. Thank you & much love. Norman
Got a new subscriber here! My vtx not staying on at idle. I did seafoam and full tank for storage. Was running perfect before that. Little black smoke comes out hyper charger at start with choke fully out now.

Bad, idle jet clogged from settings. what I do when you put your bike up for storage, shut the gas off and run the bike until there's no fuel in your carburetor system. When you take it out in the spring, turn the gas on starter up. and you as good as new. Any questions just ask..@@rigvalle6742
@@rigvalle6742You have to clean that idle jet properly that is why the choke is compensating for the lack of fuel at idle, take it apart and clean it. I don't care what magic you put in the tank it will never unclog that needle jet. It's an easy job. Yes, you have to remove the tank. Any questions just ask. Was not cleaned thoroughly or your bike would be working. Watch the video and see how I clean that idle jet. That's where the problems always lie.
As for the plugs I personally like to use some cooper anti seize. As for torque the service manual says half turn for new sparks and I don't remember how much for used sparks, but in my experience hand tight works just fine. Also perhaps something to mention, the head is aluminium, never take plugs out when the engine is hot,

Also where did you get your petrol bottle.

Yes that is my name, the fuse box is it is under the right side cover. You have a gas screen on your Petcock in the gas tank. and in the gas line connected to your carburetor. This is the same set up as your VTX. th-cam.com/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/w-d-xo.html. As for the screen it is just a screen cap that inserts in the gas line at your carb.. Would it be better or does it matter, to spray carb cleaner into old plugs, before putting new ones in. Didn't know if cleaner leaves any residue on new plugs. Thanks.
Happy to help. I would not spray carb cleaner into the hole where the old plugs are. I wouldn't want any of the dirt to run down and sit on the bottom by the plug hole. so when you remove it you don't want the dirt to fall into the motor. Hi, I just bought a 2005 vtx 1300c and it would not idle, I drained out all the gas changed the spark plugs, and it idles and works on high throttle but on low throttle its cuts out. i watched your videos and cleaned my Jets today and its much better. But there is still a very slight hesitation on low throttle. The bike, between 65 and 75 mph feels very uncomfortable and feels like its struggling with a lot of vibration . The bike had 10000km on it and the owner bought it from the dealer with cobra pipes installed and re-jetted and the af screw was at 1-1/2 turns counter clockwise. I changed it to 2-1/2 turns. I live in Toronto for reference to altitude, What else could I check on the bike? Thank you in advance
Happy to help. Gas makes a difference, These bikes like 93. Make sure your Excelerator pump is squirting gas into the carburetor when you twist the throttle. That's what takes care of idle to off idle to mid range. Make sure your diaphragm in your petcock is working properly. Test it with a vacuum gauge. Make sure it holds vacuum. That's the flow a fuel. Sometimes the vacuum lines start to fail, and collapse, starves fuel at upper rpms. Thank you for watching and your support. Arjun. Let us know how it works out. @TwoWheelRocco well when i went to check the spark plugs one of connectors to the spark plug popped out i kinda sorta pulled to hard. But im also thinking its the spark plugs

Please help me
EDIT: Took another crack at it this morning.

Thanks!!!

That is so true. Any questions just ask, Thank you for your Sub. Ride Safe and have a great day.

What year is your Honda.....If you can send Phone #...Hope that works for you.
Two Wheel Rocco Thanks for calling me yesterday. The process of elimination wins again!
1. I removed a spark plug & confirmed the gap of .035
2. Before putting the plug back in I connected the cable to the spark plug & attempted to start the bike while watching the gap for a spark. NO SPARK!
3. I connected the trickle charger overnight
4. Today it started
I'm happy the problem turned out to be very easy for me to DIY. Thank you & much love.

As for the plugs I personally like to use some cooper anti seize. But I notice the engine seems to be a little unwilling .Doesnt sound the way it used to . I keep applying throttle to keep it from dying , it almost died twice in slow speed when I taking a turn. Do you think it needs spark plugs change and air filter change. Thanks in advance !!
Happy to help. Try a new air filter and spark plugs a bit of a bear, but very doable. If you take your time, remove the tank and turn it towards the rear to get to the third spark plug. Thank you for watching and all your support. Ride safe and have a great day. Any questions just ask.
@@TwoWheelRocco Thank you so much !!
thanks Rocco, I just purchased a 2005 vtx
Happy to help...Good luck with your new ride..
Great Video. The Carb adjustment Video is great too. Im getting a VTX1300 from a friends estate. It hasnt been cranked in 3 years so it needs to be drained and cleaned etc. Can you recommend the steps to make sure I dont damage anything in the process.
Clean and drain tank....Check pet cock screen clean or replace...clean carb&Air filter..new battery. Fresh gas...Hope this helps....Let me know....Look and review my other videos on VTX1300 ...Great Bike...What year? How many Miles?
its a 2007 with less than 5000 miles. Nice spoke wheels, leather saddlebags, and a windshield. Belonged to my buddy who died of cancer in January. Im buying it from the estate for $1500. Its worth more but the family just wanted to get something out of it without bothering to fix it first. Reminds me of riding with him.
Would you recommend oiling the cylinders in case the rings are stuck? Dont know much about Honda's. If I were doing it to a car I would oil the cylinders before turning it over.
Yes, Oil in cylinder and let sit over night..2007 with 5k miles shouldn't be no problem.. check oil... when you look in the gas tank that will tell it all .I would get a battery fresh gas and pull choke and start... Let me know how it works out.
Great video, helped immensely.
Thank You, Happy it helped.Ride Safe.
Awesome, thank for the lesson!

Happy to help, Ride Safe and have a great day.
I love the tube trick. What size of tube is it?
3/8 ID fuel line Works Great. Hope this Helps.
Do you have any videos on how adjust the air fuel screw on a vtx 1300?
Sorry I do not...Stock is 1 5/8 out to 2 turns out makes a richer air gas mix. Hope this helps.
Just got a 04 vtx1300s. With 21000 miles. Do u recommend the 10/40 weight oil?
Good luck with your VTX 1300, They are great bikes. Take a look www.motorcycleforum.com/threads/oil-recommendation-for-04-vtx-1300.78286/ Hope this helps. Any questions just ask. Thank you for your Sub Will. Let us know how this works out. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Thank you for sharing. Great video!
Happy to Help..Ride Safe.
That area is pretty sealed buy you a coil that seals the hole where the plug is installed. Thank you for watching and your sub irokruok. Ride safe and have a great day.
THANKS. Great video!
thanks for video , good stuff
I will send a video on how to test the vacuum Petcock make sure those lines are not old and collapsing that affects the gas flow. This test will be the same on your VTX as it is on a sportster. Take a look at the video. Any questions just ask. .th-cam.com/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/w-d-xo.html
Great video thank you for making it.

@@TwoWheelRocco The reduction of the prices on this bike recently has me really looking at it. I love my VTX'S but my wife wants on the back of a gold wing. I can't justify the sticker. Don't get me wrong, we know what you get. I respect your opinion. Thank you.
I understand you will enjoy that bike. Good luck with your decision and you never stated 0 miles it new.
What spark plug gap did you use? 0.040 or 0.044? Thank you.
Right in the middle, 42 and see how she rides. Thats what I ran. Let us know how your VTX rides. Thank you for your Sub Jason. Ride Safe and have a great day.

Can you make a video of removing the starter motor
Hello there! One question: could you tell me if the air filter is the same for the 1300 and 1800? Thanks
Happy to help, those air filters are not the same. I will send you a link for the 1300s on eBay, Thank you for watching and all your support Marcol. Hope this helps
Thanks a lot rocco. Another one question: have you ever changed the fuel filter?
Your fuel filter is in the tank. It's a screen on your peacock.
Hi, my name is Mike I own a VTX 2005 Honda VTX 1300 have a question is it a bad idea to use ethanol free gas on my bike or continue to use premium gas
Happy to help run some ethanol, free gas and see how the bike rides on that octane which I believe is 90. Premium gas is 93 octane could be a difference. The way I do it is if I put the bike away for anywhere over a few days I turn the cockpet off and I run the bike dry of fuel in the carburetor, then I have no problems. I run all day on the premium unleaded fuel with ethanol. Let us know how it works out. Thank you for watching all your support Mike. Ride safe and have a great day. Remember, when you go to start the bike, you turn the Peacock on and you're back in business. You don't wanna turn the Pitcock on and let Fuel run into the system.
What size hose is that black hose that you used to pull the plugs out?
3/8 Hose
Or you can just use a spark plug socket and extension.....its what they are designed for....just saying.
Yes, you can use the spark plug socket. Beauty of starting the spark plug with a 3/8" hose is preventing cross threading, old mechanics trick. Hard metal plug threads, soft aluminum head. Hose will slip around the insulator before you do damage. Not so with socket. Way to go Rocco!
I just bought an 06' vtx with aftermarket pipes. It pops and cracks pretty bad on deceleration. What would be your suggestens?
Happy to help. Thank You for watching, and your sub Levi. sounds like you will need a jet kit to match that pipe.. Ride Safe and have a great day.
PAIR Mod
the bottom bolt on my air filter on my 2006 Honda VTX 1300 seems to be stripped I cannot remove it to clean the carburetor or the air filter any suggestions?
If the head of bolt is stripped...th-cam.com/video/5Q-apn_nupc/w-d-xo.html if it is the nut in the air cleaner box...Pull front of cover and unscrew at the same time...Hope this Helps...Let me know....
Two Wheel Rocco ya the nut head is fine its in the box just keeps spinning I'll try ur recommendation thanks and I really Enjoy ur video's keep em coming love my VTX
Thats the only way to remove...Pull and turn the allen head bolt..Than glue the nut back in box with JB weld.
I so appreciate ur help any other help I need will definitely come to you thx again Chuck
Possible 1800 purchase this week : is this bike having problems with the smog system
Happy to help. VTX 1800 Great Bikes. No problems that I know of. They last for ever. Thank you for watching and your sub Kevin. Let us know how it works out. Ride safe and have a great day.
Hi , I have 2008 vtx1300 it has around 21K on it and was running fine till I parked it in my garage a month back and I tried to start it up the other day it wouldn't stay idle once I push the choke in it just dies and when I tried to give it a little throttle it shoot a little bit of black liquid and even makes some misfiring sounds , any idea what would that be actually its my 1st bike so I'm not very knowledgeable on this just bought it last year and had no issues until this .
Sounds like you will need to clean your starter jet in your carburetor. This video should help,th-cam.com/video/CymFLDrKNoQ/w-d-xo.html. Let us know how this works out.
Where is the A/f mix on a 1300 carb?
Bottom of carb in back.. cv-performance.com/harley_mixture_screw_tuning Hope this helps..
I just bought a 05 vtx 1300c it has a aftermarket exhaust the exhaust right at my leg gets hot pretty quick and i feel like its eating gas up do you think it may need a rejet? Starts up pretty well dosen't hesitate on rev or acceleration just curious if its normal for that pipe to get super hot super quick
Happy to help. Those aftermarket exhaust do run hot. I had to stop riding mine with shorts. The burns were getting horrendous. I sold the bike and I settle for a stock exhaust and it's more kind to my legs. VTX is are great motorcycles. Ride safe and have a great day. If she rides good leave her alone if you don't like it, burning your leg wear pants. Hope that helps. And don't let your girlfriend get on the bike. Those pipes burned everybody.

@TwoWheelRocco its a 2004 Honda VTX 1300C i believe
I sent you a link that eBay you should be able to pick up a used one, why do you think your wires are bad?
@TwoWheelRocco well when i went to check the spark plugs one of connectors to the spark plug popped out i kinda sorta pulled to hard. But im also thinking its the spark plugs
Just cut a quarter inch off the end of that cable and reasserted into the boot and you should be perfectly all right. You'll see it will reconnect and you'll get a good connection. That's what I thought you were doing. I've seen it happen more than once. Drive safe and have a great day, no need for wires
