The original Last Ninja was a smash hit, so it seemed inevitable that a sequel would be made. Sure enough, merely a year after the original was released, The Last Ninja 2 hit store shelves and it was a critical and commercial success.
It improved on the previous games with even better graphics and less punishing gameplay. It was still a tough game, make no mistake, but at least the agonising stepping-stones that plagued the original with the need for precision jumping were ironed out.
The story picks up where the original left off with Armakuni being transported through time to face his old foe, Shogun Kunitoki, in the new battleground of modern-day New York.
The oriental-themed music from the original game was replaced by a more contemporary, gritty set of tracks from Matt Gray which were excellent. In fact, I still prefer these to the tracks from Last Ninja Remix, which included a whole different musical score from Reyn Ouwehand and Anthony Lees; although they were good, I don't think they fitted the atmosphere as well as Matt Gray's music.
    Enjoy!

A true story. I managed to complete all three Ninja games on the C64, but it took me years to do it. The third one took me until the mid 90s. In the mid 2010s I replayed all three games to see if my brain and hands were up to it. Back then they still were and I remembered things and how to do stuff. One thing I remember having nightmares about was The Basement in LN2. Years went by in the late 80s/early 90s for me to figure out where the poison was and then how to jump on the boxes. Every time I hear this music I'm back there, more than 30 years ago, stuck. And then one day I figured it out. But this level, for me, is the most haunting one. I love the music but love/hate the memories. Hard games, but they did open up the mind. Those were some amazing times for games in general. You approached them with caution because you knew they were going to smack you in your face.

Best C64 game ever. Back in the 80s, I used to spend some afternoons in the school's computer room, which was equipped with C64, and one of them had a big color TV (the others green monochrome). Was I lucky when "the one" was available and I could go for LN2!

22:33 you can disable the Alarm by going into the other room, that way when you fight the guy in the stairwell he will not almost kill you with his boosted power when the alarm is tripped.
22:52 you can flick the lights on before entering the dark room where you have to figure out the path. Also for added fun each time you switch the lights on/off you get 500 points... you can do this as much as you like to boost your score.

I have a lot of Xerox(yes people, that was what people called copy machines back in the 80's), copies of those same magazine pages that I paid about .10/page to copy off those same magazine tips/tricks at the regional library. The trick was to get there before all of the older kids would get to it and rip out the pages like the jerks they were. No way my parents would spring for anything but Time and Nat Geo subscriptions to our house and I think most of those personal computer mags even back then were about $1.10 and up so, that was my only option to fuel my C64 addiction, haha.

My thoughts exactly. The 64 games included in the mini were definitely not the best 64. I'd say a quarter are good another quarter playable and the rest not worth putting on. Fortunately it is pretty easy to ad games to the mini through USB. It's the only console I been playing the past few months and I have a ps3, Xbox and others.

The key to it was to use the MODE CHANGE option by pressing "J" on the keyboard, pressing J twice would make it so which ever direction you tapped it would face that way, it made it tons easier. J Twice, then tape the joystick the direction you wanted to face then J to revert back to default control.

You reckon that's annoying, what about the office stage trying to work out how to proceed and get further! Got the code and then after a hour gave up. Secret door was too secret, no hints at all the you have to pull some secret stick to open the door, and what about that high powred fan !!! Other than that the game is perfect. I can't believe I finished this as a kid without a walkthrough - mind you I had a friend who we would work together in sharing our knowledge.

AVGN done a Last Ninja review on the Nintendo version, of course using the worst kind of controls for the game so he didn't have a good experience with it.
I linked your video for AVGN's viewers to come take a look at, so they can see how it actually goes when you use proper controls, and also to enjoy this awesome SID music.

Maybe they did the remix because Matt Gray's soundtrack was plagiarized.
Personally, I don't care. This is great.

Matt Gray plagiarized the soundtrack? Where did you get this from?

Well some of it, listen for yourself:
Tangerine Dream: Alchemy of the Heart = Last Ninja 2 Mansion stage
Tangerine Dream: Midnight in Tula = Last Ninja 2 Office stage loader
I don't know if there are more.

***** Absolutely not. I don't even know if anyone's noticed until recent years. Also, I don't think anyone cared at the time, if you made direct C64 covers of actual songs.
Matt's still a well respected C64 musician to this day.

WOW, thanks for the info bro. I never knew about this. Matt's version is much greater, but still easy to hear it's a remake of Tangerine Dream =) I would love to know the original artists of the other tracks (if also they are remixes). Nice to hear the original version. Matt made them BADASS though =)
