Funnily enough I just watched the previous fantasy sword ratings video 2 days ago, and replied on the comments there that they should rate Imperius, even if it probably doesn't quite qualify as 'pop culture.' Not yet anyway.
It's probably coincidence because by that time they must've already shot this, but I still found it amusing. It's not much of a plug since the two LARP swords in the back were already in our face begging to be included.

The Buster Sword is shown in-universe to be unweildable by anyone not a mako-infused super-soldier, so 1 is probably fair. I know there'll be demands for Sephiroth's sword, but I'd personally love to see you analyse Cloud's combi-sword from Advent Children.
Fully combined, it's likely heavier than the Buster sword, but with a lot of potential points of failure, however the individual swords would likely be wide-spread in ratings.

    • @ReclaimerTyphoon

Everything about the buster sword, all of it's variants, abilities, etc. really come down to the user needing to be incredibly strong - and magical. Dual swords can be useful, and we see them being useful in Advent Children - but that just takes an incredible amount of strength to wield two, big swords like that. And the fact that he can swing the full thing like it weighs nothing is most of the power the sword has - it's even about the sword, really. Then, having way too many swords is only useful if you have a magical attack that lets you levitate them and shoot them at your opponent, or if you can fly around and grab them as you need, leaving them around strategically.

Problem with the Witcher swords is none of them are all that iconic. None have a significant enough design or silhouette to stand out. Most don't have any story significance either, and those that kind of do (like Aerondight and Iris) only have a miniscule importance at best. In the end, all the Witcher swords just kind of blend in with one another; there's not a Sting, Dragon Slayer, or Master Sword among them that sticks out in anyone's mind. The Witcher might have a place in pop culture, but the swords absolutely do not.

So fun fact Shad I have a 3d model I have printed for the Soul Reaver. Total length is just about 45 inches. Blade from tip to skull mouth is roughly just under 30 inches. The Handle from pommel to the connector to the skull is 9 and a half. Skull from connector to mouth is 5 and a half to 6 inches based on if you include the fangs or not. The Cross guard is at the widest 12 inches. From the tip of the guard near the mouth to the back of the guard near the handle is 7 inches. The guard thickness is just under an inch it moves in and out so its not constant.
I didnt include the blade thickness because its actually thicker then its suppose to be as I needed to adjust to make a 1/2 inch bar go through to act as the Sword's spine.
Now its actually a fairly comfortable sword to swing the balance point is the skull just over your hand and the length of the handle makes it a reasonable hand and a half sword I dont find issue using it one hand or two handed. Now the Handle IS round for my version but it has a spiral cut into the handle which actually makes it stick in your hand and the edge alignment seems to happen naturally. I think this might be because of the guard they naturally want to align because of that. But all that said it would be VERY easy to make it oval shaped and the spiral to disguise it.
And this is the issue I think you guys run into some of these swords are actually better then you realize because you actually havent gotten a chance to use it. Yes looking at it you can spot flaws but when in motion and at play those flaws might actually disappear like how the Blackbird plane when it was on the tarmac was a leaky mess but when in the air at speed it was a sleek Mach 3 bird.
So for some of these swords it might be a good idea to mock them up and try them out. You might be surprised how good it works when it actually is being used vs just looking at an image.

9:50 to be fair, there are real life humans who have specifically trained to be able to wield a "buster sword". it's by no means nimble like a long sword or tachi, but they do demonstrate the capacity to swing and move it around for extended periods of time. also cloud IS a superhuman SOLDIER (literally the name of the super human program) so it's not AS far fetched to say it's been specifically designed to be wielded by a SOLDIER. for your average person though 100% virtually useless as a combat weapon.

As a former lumberjack, I 100% agree with the low rating of the chainsaw sword. Those things will get dull in *literally* one second if you accidentally touch the forest floor with them while you're sawing. Dirt contains sand and rocks, which dull the teeth way faster than you'd think. And they're heavy.
However, they'd be great if your enemies were super slow and not wearing armor.

Some magic sci-fi metal takes care of both problems; it's super durable and light enough to swing around.
The bigger problem is their visual depiction: the teeth are only half the width of the "blade"

so interesting thing about the soul reaver, while I do respect the fact that yeah round handles are kinda bad, it actually makes a -little- sense if you take into account that the sword in question was never meant to be used by a human. It was meant to be used by a vampire, specifically an ancient vampire, who all have hands which consist of two forward talons and one 'thumb' talon which, when closed, actually end up being much rounder than a human hand and thus ergonomically one could explain why the handle is a lot rounder to account for this. That said, still makes edge alignment a nightmare.

It kinda doesn't matter if they get dull because they aren't cutting in the first place. They are ripping and mangling.

A few things to note about the buster sword, while it's obviously awful, it's more designed to take down monsters and non-sword wielding foes due to the jobs of SOLDIERs. Additionally, as you show, the wide blade doubles as a more defensive device.

As others have pointed out, even the imperial guard uses chain swords, the thing about warhammer 40k weapons is that there’s so many variations of every weapon, size variations for different types of units and races. I think it’s important to point out that being hit with one would be akin to being hit with a heavy mace, at the very least, and that’s without taking the chainsaw into account. So you could see it as a heavy blunt impact + mechanical cutting/mangling wounding effect. It sort of makes sense in universe, as you could see it possibly being laid onto armor or something and being used to cut through it. Against an unarmored person even in real life I’m sure it would end your day, or your life.

While all of that is true, the fact of the matter is that a sword is *designed* for combat with other swords as they said. And if you pit that chain sword against another sword, it isn't going to go well for the chain sword user.
It's a cool design, but if you can't be honest with yourself and admit when something isn't realistic and just accept that, then there's no point watching this video.

If you continue this as a series I'd have a few ideas:
Since the lighsaber is already rated, what about Vibroblades? The closest in real life are ultrasonic knives.
High-Frequency Blades are basically the same, but from the Metal Gear Franchise. Either Raiden's unnamed sword or Sam's Murasama.
And since the Buster Blade was brought up, what about the Muramasa from Sephiroth? Probably the same as a Katana with size advantage/disadvantage.
Also, as a Sephiroth cosplayer I can tell you that a sword with that length is surprisingly fast to move. (As long as it's 1.4kg)
And if you make a Buster Sword, but adapt it to real life a bit (thinner). You can make an ~7kg sword.
Also one minus point for Imperious: If you make one the wrong way around, you can't carry it with your dominant hand.
Edit: Also a sword that is way out there: "Battle Cry" from Brütal Legend, worn by Lars Halford

Jade: is completely useless in any context that isn't decoration or maybe buttons on a shirt
The jade guard: intentionally designed to look like a love tap with a wooden sword would break it, to the point that it might as well not exist
Goddess Sword's cross guard: literally has similar outward dimensions, can actually survive more than one hit, is NOT made of useless material that would shatter on contact with another sword, is surprisingly wieldy aside from the handle being round.
Shad: gives a 9 to the one with the useless guard that would literally break on impact with a wooden sword, gives a 3 to Soul Reaver despite having the second most impractical hilt on the entire channel, gives a 2 to a hilt that would actually survive more than one hit AND allow you to move it around reliably... For no other reason than "all one material plus round hilt".
The other guy: brings up multiple points of failure with one blade, acts like being made entirely of one material is even worse, also claims that the Master Sword's hilt has a leather wrap when the original depictions also showed it having a hilt that was all one material (also the original depictions of the Master Sword were blue, it wasn't until Twilight Princess and/or Master Quest that it was reconned to be purple).

We've always wondered about it, Shad's just trying to answer what we're curious about in his own way by analyzing it from a curious person's viewpoint.

@@cocodojo I will criticize that a perfectly functional historical sword doesn't get a 10/10 because it's not a longsword essentially. So pretty much all East Asian swords are barred from getting a 10/10. And shorter swords. And single-edged swords. Like criticizing a pistol for now shooting as far as a rifle.

If you want a decent attempt at 40k commentary of normal people using chainswords, then I direct you at Guant's Ghosts series. Specifically "First and Only" I believe, I think chapter 28?
They show how duels are done between chainswords wielded by normal humans. (Yes, there are sized down versions that are much lighter.)

Honestly Shad, and everyone else who likes quality military sci fi, should just do themselves a favour and read (or listen to; all the Gaunt's Ghosts books are now available on Audible, and most of them are narrated by highly talented Toby Longworth) the entire Gaunt's Ghosts series - truly excellent books that manage to capture the esprit de corps of fighting men brilliantly even in the extreme 40K setting.

The Highlander katana loses a point for story, even though the story works for the movie.
The sword is destroyed during a fight against Kane in H3 and Connor travels to Japan to specifically get a piece of Japanese iron to forge a new one the same way Masamune had forged the first one for Ramirez in 593 bc.
It's a nice story piece, but if we pull the sword into reality, the canon Highlander sword is the one reforged by Connor in H3, using a 2500 year old method (folding the blade over 200 times to create the famous razor sharp edge) and iron sourced in Japan according to ancient techniques, in 1994.
Connor would have been better off taking some metallurgy classes and using a bit of his enormous wealth accumulated over the centuries for help forging a god sword, but it all worked out in the end, since Kane was also using an antique, forged through antiquated methods to separate Connor's head from the rest of his body.

If you want glorious absurdity of a sword the Dragon Buster from The Legend of Dragoon is amazing. The "blade" is fire that is physical enough to cut and pierce, the "blade" can be whatever length it's wielder wants it to be, and the sword attaches itself to it's users hand/arm when the user summons it.

I absolutely love the new sit down and analyze sword videos. I was getting really sick of The sword review videos of just let’s just cut a pool noodle. I just don’t find that content particularly interesting. I prefer sparring analysis. And it’s just the same thing over and over again. These videos are fun and it is a good way to diversify the content without spending a lot of money. I think you should do different weapons like maybe pop culture, bows or masons. And pleas bring back fantasy re-armored or theoretical videos like how would fighting a dragon would actually work. Those videos were so useful as a writer.

But if you disagree with that, that’s perfectly fine just not my thing.

Chainswords are 100% used by normal people in 40k (well normal genetically). They're just scaled down.
Part of the issue is they look thick because they carry over from the minitures. if made thinner I think the thickness would not be an issue. The thickness is less a lore situation and more a modeling situation and thus the art stemming from the models.
Sisters of Battle use Chainswords, I know that for sure. In addition there are two handed (zweihander) sized Chainswords, including those wielded by fully unarmored Sisters of Battle (Sisters Repentia) One aspect I've noticed with those is the blade has no guard on the back side, thus making it a double sided "blade"
Side note: there are other "Chain" weapons as well, such as axes and polearms. Claws and fists, although I think the Chain Fist is just a fist with a chain saw sticking out of it.

Most chainfists are a first with chainsaw.
But the weapons Tyberos the red wake uses are power fists with duel chain swords mounted on he palm.
(He is a monster standing over 11 ft tall in armour, so everything about him is huge)
I am certain there may be others that use a similar design somewhere in 40k

Finally you mentioned Soul Reaver, I am not one to dwell much in the comments, but I would love to see your version of a redesign of Soul Reaver to get the highest rating possible while keeping its "soul" pun intended.
Also you are obviously aware of imperious flaws, yet they were intentional having in accountability the magic of the lore, nevertheless would be thrilling to see a redesigned version with only real functionality in mind, maybe it could even become part of your lore, in a cliché hero loses powers story, maybe he'd have more realistic version of it forged.
Really hope to see those redesigns in a near future!
