    T1 $6.2 million - T2 $100-102 million, quite a jump. Best action movie of all time, you almost can't compare them, one is a sci-fi horror film (T1), and the other is more a blockbuster, action flick. Still IMO this is a rare occasion of a superior sequel to an already excellent movie. I remember this came on the old school PPV channels back in 92, and our TV picked it up for free. Don't know how that would happen, but I recorded it on VHS, and wore out that tape over the next 10 years watching this.

  • @Thylonicus
    @Thylonicus ปีที่แล้ว

    28:35 "How can she even think for a second that this is okay?"
    She doesn't. Listen to the backing music; it's the Terminator theme. In that moment, for the entirety of the scene until she decides to not kill Dyson, she had _become_ a Terminator. She had _become_ the very soulless killing machine that she hated and feared. It didn't matter that he was a human being. It didn't matter that he had a family. His death with the most efficient way to ensure the preferred future--which was the same reasoning Skynet had when it sent the first Terminator back to 1984 to kill a woman before she could even conceive.
    That's why it means so much to her that John came to stop her. He loved her too much to let her cross that line and become irredeemable. He loved her too much to let her lose her humanity.
    Incidentally, I really have to suggest checking out _Terminator: Dark Fate._ It gets around the wacky nonsense of the rest of the franchise by wiping it all off the table and continuing from where T2 left off. You get to see Sarah's arc get completed, and you see some ideas in T2 taken further with the Terminator. I'm not saying it's better than T2 or anything, but I'm saying it's _leagues_ better than any of the other nonsense that came out after T2. It also actually finishes the story in a good way.
    As for whether I'd kill someone to save the future--if they're an evil bastard, oh yes. In a heartbeat. Show me a younger Hitler and I'll show you an averted genocide. Mussolini, Qaddafi--pick your tyrant. Give me the chance to give them a shotgun enema before they have the chance to hurt people, I'll do it in a heartbeat. I'm not saying I'd enjoy it; I'm not saying I'd like it; I'm not saying I'd sleep easily at night afterward. I'm saying that it would be necessary, and because of that I'd do it without hesitation.

    If you thought this film was a bit too long at two and a half hours, you've might've been better off watching the theatrical cut.
    The version of the film you watched is the special edition, which has around 15 minutes worth of deleted footage put back in, such as the dream sequence with Kyle Reese, the scene where they remove the CPU from the 'good' Terminator's head, and the scene where John teaches the 'good' Terminator how to smile. These scenes are enjoyable, but inessential to the plot, and in the audio commentary, James Cameron indicated that the theatrical cut is his preferred version of the film.
    Also, the version of the film you watched had a different ending than the theatrical cut. The ending you saw is the original ending Cameron came up with, but after seeing how it looked on film, he decided not to use it in the theatrical cut, and went with a more ambiguous ending which left it unclear as to whether or not Skynet's creation had been prevented. Even the initial version of the special edition had the ambiguous ending, but some more recent releases use the original ending instead.

    • @hanng1242
      @hanng1242 ปีที่แล้ว

      The dream sequences detract from the film. The scenes I do like are the one where the T-1000 glitches out touching the hazard-striped metal, and the subsequent one where it is glitching out disguised as Sarah showing how John knows which one is fake.

    Great reaction Michal! Your commentary is always amusing, and I really enjoy hearing your thoughts at the end. Too many reactors just end the video without really discussing it or letting us know what they thought about the movie.
    One thing to note about the version you watched is that it used the original ending which test audiences hated. The theatrical version has a much better ending and most people consider it to be the "true" ending. It's only about 45 seconds, but finishes the film in a better way than the ending that you saw. If you're interested, you can see the theatrical ending here: th-cam.com/video/Lo5M1i1a0Kc/w-d-xo.html.
    There's no need to apologize for liking the first film more than the second. It's not like you hated this one or anything like that. Personally, I prefer the second one because it came out when I was a kid and it was a huge thing at the time. The first one, on the other hand, came out when I was still quite young so I didn't see that one in the theater. So, for me, my preference is based purely on an emotional connection to the second film that I don't have with the first film.
    Can't wait to see your next video!

    These two movies are somewhat like the first two Alien movies, Alien and Aliens. T1 has more of a horror and suspense theme like the first Alien. T2 has more of an action theme like Aliens. One other similarity - both franchises have essentially 2 good movies and the rest are just fodder. The Rocky franchise though one can argue about later movies also has its strongest two films as the first two. I prefer Aliens and T2 over Alien and T1. But I prefer the first Rocky over the second. With the Godfather series I also prefer the first film over the Godfather 2 (the second Godfather has some great writing and acting and generational story telling but as a story it jumps back and forth breaking the flow at times whereas the first film flows much better - both are great films - the second arguably risks more and achieves more but I enjoy watching the first film more). Lastly the highway ending for this film as another commentator mentioned is a much stronger ending for T2.

    One of the finer points of this movie (along with Terminatior 1) is how much people can talk about the little/big things in these movies. For example how transformation is part of this movie in 4 parallels -- the T1000 physically, Sarah becoming an emotionless "Terminator", John becoming that humane leader, and the T-800 becoming more human .
    Another point to note is the full nuclear explosion in T2 -- those visuals are considered to be the best recreation on film of a nuclear detonation -- and considering that it was filmed in 1990 (with the Cold War ending just a year before, and nuclear disarmement talk still ongoing through the next few years) , that explosion was the apex visualization of a nightmare that hunted the world for the last 45 years (pre-1990) .
    More young people should watch that explosion today, to have an understanding of what the US & NATO are toying with today in Ukraine .
    Ahem ... . So you mentioned an interest in a earlyer movie after next week -- continuing the madness of the Cold War era , I'd suggest Stanley Kubrick's dark comedy "Doctor Strangelove" , in which Peter Sellers plays 3 characters of note .
    More younger people need to know about this jem, and the madness between WWII and when they were born .

    Great reaction. And no problem with your preference of the first movie over the second. These films have been around for decades and they should be able to withstand a variety of interpretations. I like the second more because Cameron used his bigger budget wisely. The production and second Terminator were not just better, but more creatively depicted. A less talented director would have just given you more of the level of action that you saw in the first film. And even though time travel is more common in many contemporary fantasy and action films, I enjoyed the way that Cameron dealt with the idea of responsibility for future bad actions and whether the future could be changed. I also liked how you noted that young John showed signs of being a great leader. I missed some of that when I saw the film in the theater when it was released.

      @@the-NightStar Wow. Yours is an interesting and unexpected comment. There is no such thing as a single, right or wrong opinion about a film. And if you pay any attention to film history, you know that the reputations of films and books rise and fall and rise again over the years. But even more fundamental than this, it is a waste of time to watch a movie reaction if you do not respect the person doing the video commentary. Post your own reactions and express your own opinion.

    "T2" does look better than the first "Terminator" film. The passage of time and advances in visual effects that took place in the interim is part of the reason. But money is also a factor. The first film was not produced with the idea of creating a blockbuster; it was made on a fairly modest budget. By comparison, Cameron had a ton of money to plow into "T2."

    Growing up, I liked Terminator 2 better. But looking at it from a more adult perspective, I'm with you. I prefer the first Terminator film. Not so much because of the relationship. But I really liked the idea that Sarah's picture will forever loop in time. Get burned 🔥 and then freshly get taken 📸 again.
    And the irony that he always wondered what she was thinking of at the time the picture was taken. And it about him all along.
    I also like the nostalgia of the 80s. I miss it. The music 🎶 in the dance club and the hair. I also greatly appreciated the practical effects. The make-up and art department was genius in this film for it's day.
    I also liked the tone of the movie better. Arnold's Terminator presented as like a Frankenstein horror picture. Just not quite human. Burned off eye brows. Hiding the damaged eye and arm with shades and a leather jacket. Can't be killed. And so on. -OG

    Honestly, I have a hard time deciding which of the two parts is the better one, simply because they are brilliant in a very different way, but for that I can clearly say that I could very well do without any sequel after T2 and therefore the series is finished for me after the first two movies!
    For the week after next I recommend a classic from the 80s, namely "The Breakfast Club" (1985), which will hopefully make it into the list :)

    I don't think you have to apologize for liking the first one over the sequel. A lot of people like the first one more. They are two very different movies with different tones and themes. The first movie was meant to be a standalone story. The "There is no fate" and "The future is not set" lines that were introduced in the first film are basically red herrings and proven to be untrue by the deleted scenes. The deleted scenes show that no matter how much Kyle or Sarah try to stop the future, their actions actually end up setting it into motion. The logic is that the war against machines IS fate, and there is nothing they can do to stop it. T2 undoes a lot of the logic that the first film set up. For example, if they stopped the nuclear war and the machine uprising, then that means that Reese never goes back in time to get Sarah pregnant, and so John shouldn't exist in the future. So, I think your preference for the first film is valid.

      How she was saying the effects held up only half and half for the first. That's still pretty impressive. The first story vs seeing her transformation in the second. Take the last half of the first movie and first half of this one, the theatrical endings of both. So many parts to pick out and blend it into one. I'd take both over any other Terminator movies made since.

    Yes I agree, the first Terminator movie is the best. The second one is really good, but there are a few things out of place. The first movie is flawless. Yes some of the special effects are very out of date, but I don’t care. For me the first movie is the best Science Fiction / Thriller movie ever made.

      @JudgeJaco ปีที่แล้ว

      @@the-NightStar Sorry, some things don’t work for me. The Bad to the Bone song doesn’t fit the movie. There is also a little bit too much comic relief in T2. In the first movie the humor is more subtle. And sometimes the Terminator is out of character. I know he can learn to act more human, but in a few scenes it’s almost like Arnold forgot he plays a Terminator. T2 still is a brilliant movie though when it comes to acting, special effects, stunts and many memorable scenes. But at the same time it is just a little bit incoherent. I give the first movie a 9.5. And T2 is 8.5 for me.

    bummer that you watched the extended cut first. the ending is pretty much ruined in this version, its like a curiosity for people who have seen terminator 2 but for first time viewers its pretty bad.
    the other scenes they added are all pretty much useless and make the movie less tight and push the run time for no real reason. again its really better for someone who has already seen the movie and want to look at some of the additional material that was left on the cutting room floor.

    Don’t know if you noticed but the main swat guy was played by Dean Norris aka Hank from breaking bad lol
    Miles Dyson was the MVP for being willing to destroy his life’s work as soon as he found out what happened

    I liked the first Terminator movie also because to me, the second one kind of pandered to kids. What kid wouldn't want his own robot that would follow his commands? I did not like the scene where the two guys came over to help when John called for help. That really took away from the movie for me. But this was after I hated the Ewok characters in Star Wars for precisely the same reason - catering to children. LOL

    T2 is a good movie, but Terminator was complete and didn't need a sequel. The open ending is more powerful than the 'must have closure' that T2 and most movies made for newer audiences feel obliged to deliver. The later sequels feel like straight up Hollywood cash grabs. This sadly became the rule from the 80's on, with standalone movies like First Blood, Predator and Alien as other examples of the genre of an outstanding movie followed by a flashy action sequel and then 3-5 cynical cash grabs with deteriorating writing, lore and purpose.
