This piece has been anticipated for months, we went head to head with a preamp eq combo I have grown to put in the top of the top in the studio, and warm audio did something amazing!
Could you guys do just a simple A / B video with these two again. Without all the nob adjusting. I got nothing from this. Just a request....as always , thanks
ya i agree this was useless
@@guitarz99 Not useless as you got to hear what they do, but not a good demo.
They killed it for me a minute into the video by talking about how similar they thought they sounded, putting expectations into people's heads before ever demoing either one.
I bought one for a Reel to Reel Tape Project. I have the output of the Reel to Reel going into this unit and the sound is absolutely fantastic. The build quality if very good but the sound it adds to the Reel to Reel output is beyond my expectations. Highly recommend this for anyone that is in the market.
We will do a full mix soon, we would love to offer this information. The Warm 273's layer amazing, they absolutely belong in the mix. creating the huge stereo image that we all want.
i'll tell you what, i have had good and bad here. i LOVE, repeat LOVE the sound of the 273-eq. however, the quality control on these units has been an issue for a number of people. i am on my second "defective" unit, and while the issues were minor, they were entirely the fault of whomever assembled them. the DESIGN and sound is great, and the problems didn't stop me from ordering another 4 channels. i am just hoping that they clamp down on the factory. it's not the only warm unit i've had with assembly issues, and considering i've only just begun using their products, i am hoping it's just a growing pain considering their rapid growth in exposure and users. all in all, they really have an amazing preamp here. thanks for the shootout.
I'm on my second bad 273EQ as well. I love the sound so far though.
I love warm stuff too and am a fan, but fyi I've had to get an EQP-WA repaired, 2 different WA12's as well as a WA76. So everything I've ever purchased from them except the WA412 has needed service...BUT they were always very good about it. I await a WA273...hopefully no repairs will be needed after I rack it up! Fingers crossed lol
Do yourself a favor. Test it BEFORE you rack it. Normally I would rack it straight away as well but since I'm currently awaiting unit # 3 . . . . ;)
Rip Reed good idea!
yes. i already fell victim to the tight space/rack rash trap. after my 3rd 273EQ still having issues, i returned it and got a pair of single channel EQ's. they are working out a lot better as far as isolating noise goes. my big issue has been hum. i ALSO purchased 2 273's without eq, and one showed up sonically perfect (no hum) but with a screw loose in it, and the other with one noisy channel. i'm exchanging the noisy channel one hoping for another, and i'm keeping the screw loose one. IT is totally hum free and sounds like a beast.
this pre sounds really really awesome. it's been worth it for ME to hang in there and keep returning units till i get ones that are properly quality controlled. i don't know how many other people would be that patient. my issues, other than multiple units with screws bouncing around inside, and one blown channel on a WA-412, have been a strange hum at 360hz. it's particularly evident on the EQ models, and is only present when the EQ is activated. one of my regular 273 units hums when i turn on the lowpass, getting louder at each step.
i have also seen channels of this pre be dead silent, besides of course the hiss you'd expect as you turn up the gain. i KNOW this is all quality control, but if they don't get it under control soon it's probably going to sting them. such a great unit, but so many issues.
Después de tres o cuatro años lo seguir recomendando?
Hola, sí que ha pasado algunos años espero que podáis traducir este texto lo seguís recomendando enérgicamente? Estoy por comprarme uno o esperar ahorrar un poquito más y comprarme el original
I know this is an older video but I am glad I found it. I am in the market for getting a lunchbox pre, EQ, comp to do some stem processing. I have been looking to do it with all Neve LB 500 series modules like Doung has. I have seen the Warm audio stuff around and I think it's great they make "clones" of the high end sought after gear. However, my concern is this. When someone is going to make a clone of a $2,000 piece of gear and sell it for $750, you got to wonder how that can be done. There has to be compromises somewhere. usually, its the quality of the components being used and possibly the QA control.
I know that several people posting here has had 2-3 units needing service or simply defective. That's very concerning to me personally. I also know that the re-sale value of Warm is not going to be the same as the real Neve stuff. Yes, the Neve name holds a ton of weight and there is a reason for that. That does not mean having a single piece here and there as clones in a studio is fine but to outfit your entire analog studio with racks of the stuff like in this video? I don't know that I would ever do that. Warm has not been around long enough to withstand the test of time but they are a fraction of the cost so depending on your specific situation it's an option.
As far as the difference in sound in this video? Like others have mentioned it's not the best shoot out but I thank the boys for their effort and at least trying. Most people that complain are usually ones who don't have a YT channel and offer anything to anyone, they just complain.....LOL....
So for me, If I am buying a limited amount of pieces I would rather go with the real thing and pay the extra money. I know I have good resale value and something that is stood the test of time in the market. Just my opinion.
From 7:09 I really don’t hear the transition from the wa273eq to the Neve. They sound the same for me at that specific moment in this confusing shootout.
Would you say this is a noisey preamp when driven hard? And by noisey I mean the analog hiss sound that comes from analog gear. I currently have a Golden age Pre 73 and it can get really noisey when I drive up the gain. I’m considering upgrading to the warm audio version and just wondering if it’s worth the upgrade.
Warm Audio is way better than Golden Age. Imo
Bruh I swear I hate people who comment just to be fanboys and haters. I'm really trying to decide what I want to invest in. I could get any of the 1073s budget wise but I'm also a value based shopper so I want a quality/price balance. Will I get professional results with the wa73?
hello there to everyone... in my ears i hear more rich sound from original neve... this tone button from wa getting real close to original neve.. but again its just close not the same...
Warm has done a phenomenal job. The WA273EQ sounds really, really good. Congrats to Warm, job well done. With that said, the Neve sounds a little more present and smoother IMHO (Vocals/Bass). It's a very subtle difference that translates as a warmer sound to me. Does anyone hear this or do you hear something different to what I'm hearing? Either way, I'm liking what I'm hearing from the WARM
Hi Quake. A couple things you're hearing can mostly be attributed to mismatched volume levels and mismatched EQ settings as they switch back and forth. Never let that fool you. It's very hard to distinguish between the two when that happens. My personal take is this: You can dial in the WARM so closely to the Neve that any subtle differences will be essentially indistinguishable. Also...99% of those super-subtle differences can be easily adjusted in the box.
Thanks Michael. I appreciate that tremendously. Do you have samples posted that exemplifies what you are saying? I would love to not spend the difference in getting the Neve (Which is what I'll be purchasing later this year). Best!!
Hi Quake. I just deleted a lengthy post I was writing about all of this because I wanted to first ask you a few quick questions. Please answer honestly: 1. How old are you...or what is your experience level in recording? 2. What genre of music do you plan to record? What will you be using the Warm or Neve for specifically? WHY do you want the color of the 1073 specifically? These are important questions.
Hi Mike, 1.)I started recording professionally in 88. I cofounded a label that has released 44 albums. Primarily Hip-hop & R&B with a Little Rock as well. 2.) I am currently working on a R&B Project 3.) Primarily vocals and some bass and keys. 4.) I've always loved the warm sounds of the 1073/LA-2A/117a Blue (vintage) combinations that we used at Larry Gold's The Studio before it became Milkboy's. I like a sound with less over stated brightness with more fullness in the music and a present vocal in the mix. I also love a 2" to digital. Of course that's "the sound " I grew to love. Again, I know this all really comes down to preference so I'm somewhat biased but I like a full rich sound if that makes sense. We Mastered at Universal with Kevin Reeves in NYC (before they closed) and Chris Athens at Sterling Sound also in NYC.
@@quake-0017 Did you end up going with the Neve or WA? If the WA, are you happy with the sound you are getting?
the warm audio was louder all the time so no way to do a fair comaprison
Hi Doug! does the WA73 can deliver the beautifull crunchy distrotion as the original ans ams can do? I mean, are subtle or if you push pretty hard the input stage it can do awesome harmonics? thnxxx :)
Yes! very clean at first, almost just enough ,, but when pushed it definitely adds that harmonic, the tone knob really gives you the option to flip and decide. It really does sound amazing, and does everything I would want from a channel like this. amazing when you hit it hard it adds that amazing crunchy distortion
That warm mojo crunchy vibe on 909 kick drum (you know man ;) ). instant buy
oh yeah, harmonics! I picked up a Bettermaker limiter this year, it has two knobs designed for harmonics, obviously not a 1073 but worth a look awesome limiter
Love the video. I've worked with the Lunch Box and it is amazing. Warm Audio is also making incredible gear across the board. Thanks for the vid Doug and Freddy.
I agree, got nothing from this. I'm interested for instance in how this preamp works with a ribbon mic on a guitar cabinet. Maybe you could A/B it with a good ribbon, like a Royer 121, and leave the EQ alone so we could just hear what it's doing, and if you wouldn't mind, identify the microphone. Things like that would be helpful. And we can't see in the video what the Tone knobs are labeled as or set at, so if you want to let us know the impedance going in, that would be helpful as well. Thanks for trying...
I love and hate these shoot-outs. I love my warm audio products. I can't afford the classic Neves, Neumans, Universal Audios. etc. But I do like products that sort of pay homage to them. I understand the logic behind doing these vids, I just wish guys would make videos and reviews based on the soud quality of these units in their own rights.
The WA sounds great, but is it just me or does the Neve sound significantly crisper in the mids on drums? I mean isn't the crispness why you would go to a 1073?
I've never thought about the 1070 circuit as crispy I always thought of it as warm
But I could imagine a little bit more clarity on the top end might qualify as crispy
@@DonaldMerrit That's exactly what I meant by crisp I think. An old comment, so can't quite remember, and I won't bother watching the vid again sorry 😅
The new Warm Audio WA73 pre-with eq made it to the studio today.after 10 min. Behind the rack and patch bay she was fired up. Can't wait to hear it in a mix in the next couple of days happy day at Harborboy Studios. Just me doing mic checks this pre sounds solid I almost threw away my UNIVERSAL AUDIO 6176 after hearing how this pre sounds but the real test will be when I get a real singer on the mic lol March 8th 2018
congrats man, it's a amazing sound, it mixes very well. The source has space with very little effort, We are loving them over here!
Thanks for the test guys but I was a bit worried about the accuracy after you mentioned the "tone button" lol. From my understanding it just changes the ohms from 1200 to 300. The Neve units do the exact same thing with the "Lo-Z button". And as someone already mentioned, the quick eq changes are useless. A better comparison would be to set both units to the same settings then flip the sound back and forth so the viewers have a chance to really listen to each one for a few seconds at a time. I think youtube audio quality is like a 192k mp3(??) so listening to the units in person will be better for anyone. A friend sent me the video review from Pure Sound along with the 88.2k audio files comparing the Warm unit to the BAE, Vintech, and Great River. The BAE unit definitely won. I found the clarity and imaging a bit better but the Warm didn't seem harsh in anyway. I think its a cool buy if you can't get the real deal right now. I do own the 1073DPX.
I appreciate the comment, We were the first on the scene, and really wanted to get the eq in action. I do fully agree setting the knob on the unit and shooting it out is much more accurate. We wanted people to hear how awesome it was, at doing it's job, as we would use it in a mix. How the high when it boosts, it just shine, where you can really use those three knobs to carve anything away you need, and do it very musical. I do agree though. A proper shootout would be much better with just A/B of the units set identical.
A minimum of 20 pcs. of Warm gear in those racks. Don't know how many he paid for. I have been considering a WA73, but after hearing of so many faulty units, I think it might just be best to suck it up and get the BAE or the Heritage. You get what you pay for? Anyone else think this?
I never had problems with mine, but I’ve had issues with other Warm gear - as well as with more expensive stuff such as UA, this is always unpredictable.
The Warm mic pres are really dope, but I wouldn't get a strip like the 1073 clone, I would just get the mic preamp separately and build a channel strip using separate components/processors.
Bass guitar sounded pretty solid through the Neve 500 series! How was that recorded? What kind of bass? Thanks!
Very cool! Thanks for the video. Warm definitely makes some great stuff.
Bro. Stop touching the eq during the shootout playback. Can you re do this shootout?
If you guys do a shootout between the Warm, Heritage, and whateverelse, PLEASE include a FULL mix through them!!! You can't really do a proper demo unless you are prepared to show what a full mix through them sounds like.
Will do!
Guys I don't know if it's just me but the real neve totally destroyed the warm audio. Warm audio sounds like it was recorded in a basement. Real neve sounds like a real studio.
03:52 "Your Love is Merciful, Your Love is Unconditional, Your Love so Beautiful, fill this place cause...."
Praise God...🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I'll be the contrarian and say "Thanks for twisting the EQ knobs"! I mean come one guys, these units are not just preamps, they are EQ. How hard is that to figure out? People need to hear the knobs being twisted.
For my money the Warm held its own on most of the inputs, the electric guitar had some magic from the real Neve that was more illusive on the Warm. But I could use it everyday no problem.
Now someone needs to make a frame with some faders to rack these in and lets get on with recreating mixing desks. HA.
my old mixer is done for, i am considering to pair WARM Amp/Eq with SSL X-Desk
it would be more beneficial if you left the settings flat and showed the comparison between instruments. leave the EQing to the user. thanks for the video!
Not at all. The EQ is one of the most critical elements in a 1073. If that sound isn’t right, then it’s a failure
Oh the beta52a, it's got that balloon sound to it :D instantly recognisable
WA seems to be taking over
So stoked y’all used a Christian lyric vocal for the shoot out! God bless you guys!
wonders how many people on here saying oh the neve was better were listening on their shitty iphones lol
Both seem to missing that big rich harmonic blossoming low end that a real Neve is know for. Could just be the video tho, I’d have to hear them in the room. Either way thanks for the video!
Better do a gain match and leave it alone, tweak later. Bad comparison you guys seem like try to put more volume on a warm and it’s doesn’t help anyone.
WA73-EQ or WA73+EQP-WA?????
both. Lol. either choice will be a good one, the eqp will have a smoother more tube vibe, where the 73eq is super powerful to get a sound in the mix, If money was no object both, two totally different eq's I love the 73eq for the initial balancing, where the pultec is a super tone kind of eq, very powerful to add that big sound!
Doug Jenkins Nice! Thank you!
They F... AMS NEVE!......Thanks Doug!!
The average consumer can't tell the difference between the original neve or clone!!! anyway for the price point and quality i'll get away with the Warm Audio products.... Thanx
Right!!!! I agree. Warm Audio mic pres are AWESOME!!!!
really?
The Warm does not sound like a typical 1073. It lacks lows and shimmery highs.
The mids are not tight enough. On vocals it lacks consonant attack which will make it more difficult to for the track to sit right.
put the heritage audio 1073
You WONTbe able to hear if this is a quality preamp UNTIL you hear it used in a FULL MIX!
While it will be (nice) to hear it in a full mix, you should be able to very clearly hear how they sound as individual samples as well. We all listen to our own tracks soloed of vocals, bass, guitar, etc. You should be able to (hear) what these sound like compared to what you're used to hearing with your own gear.
Could you guys no fuck with the knobs during the A/B? Also try to match the levels would be nice
S U P E R .....WOW
It sounds more like the neve when the tone button is engaged to me. What are your thoughts on the wa 1073 doug?
Darwin G 100 i agree with the tone knob. i believe the build the sound and the overall functionality is unbeatable as far as sound its pretty scary how close it sounds. When i was flipping back and forth it was almost identical. The eq had some differences but not like one was better just different
Doug Jenkins yeah i will be getting one soon. So you can run a compressor straight into it? I love the way it sounds. Great video by the way doug.
Thanks man! Yeah you can run a compressor as a insert right from the back of the channel. Really simple! Great to A/B and take it out of the chain
You have to be kidding!? Did you guys come in on the same truck as the Beverly HillBilly's?
You're did a great job with the shoot out. Thanks
These guys are too professional to NOT KNOW that we need to hear this unit on a full mix. Warm pays them for sure. No way Doug Jenkins (who has mounds of classic gear) just all of a sudden became a Warm Audio fanatic. Let's be honest with ourselves here people. Warm is a great company, but I'd rather hear and see reviews from someone the company is not paying. How honest are they by doing this? Still a great company so far though, I own the Tone Beast and the WA76, and I love them both.
what interested me here is seeing the *range* of tone you could produce on each. Neve was by far more transparent, but that's not to say the character of the warm pre has no place in a studio. Also, consider that the real 1073 is thousands of dollars and the wa273 is, what, 1500?
😂
Great work guys, love your videos!
These sound killer on drums. Hi Freddy and Doug 😂
What's up matt! Your drums sounded killer on these LOL
So the controls on both of them work. That's all I could really tell from this. Thanks anyway though.
I DESERVE A FREE ONE! UGHHHHHHHH LOL
For O N C E (just once) in my life I would like to see a shootout where they just sat down for a little while before filming and actually discussed how they should do the shootout so that it will be a good one. Why would you go and fiddle around on the knobs if you do entirely different things on the different preamps? That's gives us absolutely nothing. I've seen TWO good preamp shootouts on TH-cam. And I believe I've seen pretty much all that is out there. Just let the audio pass through both units without doing anything else. Also, let the audio be a very short 1 second loop. That helps our memory and makes the differences MUCH more pronounced. Nothing is worse than a 30 second clip with a long fade out that makes you forget how it even sounded before the next clip starts. The next worst thing is having long clips and doing what you did with the guitar - having the guitarist play many different licks in different registers, and then changing between them willy nilly. How could anyone compare preamps if on one the guitar plays in a low register, and then suddenly starts playing in a higher register when the other preamp is used? All of these shootout needs SHORT clips of a second or two in lenght, playing the same thing, and having them cross over completely without any pauses. If showing different registers of voice or instrument, then they should be treated as their own seperate portions of the shootout. For example, play the same short loop of a guitar in a low register on both units and switch between them semi-rapidly, then swith to mid register and do the same, then high register. If moving the EQ buttons, make sure they are in the same place on both units (or match up sonically as much as possible) before doing anything else.
I agree but the real neve has thump, Ive listened to both and they still have not got it down, I'm going neve even if it costs more .The secret is the transformers and what ever else they did back then to get this pound and tone warmth.I'm almost convinced these company's don't wanna get that close so they can keep conning people in to buying over and over to stay in business.Or like they say trade secrets are just that secret's.
Did not get the point of this video. It's not even a real Neve 1073. Can I get my 5 minutes back?
To my ears, Neve sounds totaly diferent than WA.
Neve sounds amazing, natural, “live” and very dynamic, beautiful.
WA sounds almost same like plugins cold, dead …that is diference. I think if we don’t buy original hardware from Neve, we can have same results with plugins instead of buying WA copies.
I would bet in a controlled study you would not be able to make that judgement... but if you all ready have a bias and you sit and watch these you're going to judge them with your bias... confirmation bias. Best way to watch these is to not watch at all but to listen and if there isn't a glaring difference between them....
@@StevenClements my comment is written without any bias. Only judge was my ears and I still can say the same in comparison between original Neve and WA. No bias at all.
you cant compare a 500 series and a non 500series!!!
Why not? What difference do you expect there to be?
@@thischannel1071 Right!! 😂
NEVE all the way
Gearslutz is trashing the new Warm Audio 273 as a harsh grainy affair (so typical) and I bet it is scaring allot of cats off this new unit.
A lot of gear snobs on there, I don't write off what they have to say but take with a big grain of salt. Sounds pretty nice to me. I'll probably be getting one of these once I have some extra money.
I can tell you with 100% accuracy that there A LOT of people on gearslutz who have very little experience, or who are very jaded when it comes to gear. There are also a lot of people on there who will say whatever they need to say to JUSTIFY all the money they spent on all their "classic" gear. I would bet any amount of money that 99% of the people on gearslutz couldn't pick out the Neve or the WARM in straight-up blind shootouts...especially in a mix. Furthermore, not one single person who is LISTENING to the end recording could give a crap less which you used! Bryce Young (owner of WARM) is a brilliant engineer who has made highly legitimate outboard gear affordable to far more people. He's a super-kind, generous, Christian Texas boy who knew things could be done better. The differences in the WARM and Never are essentially negligible...except for the PRICE! I tell people all the time...get over the name of your gear and get to work.
@@michaelyolch79 absolutely, I have a couple of bae 1073mp and one warm audio wa73eq and the warm smokes my bae no questions it just smokes them !!!!
@@chachoadame8830 wow...I think this comment might have just sold me on a WA273. Is it really up to par with BAE??
what a marketing spot and fake people... NEVER warm audio can be close to 1073 original, never
Spotting the difference is one thing, but it seems obvious to me that the WA in this case will definitely get the job done. At the end of the day that's why we buy all this gear. Having your preference is great, but the WA doesn't sound bad and that means it can get the job done.
David Synth such an emotional reaction with no logical reasoning behind it can NEVER be good, never
Why? The original doesn't use any magic parts and its schematic is available. The WA uses the same transformer that BAE uses and which is made by the same company that made the originals.
@@thischannel1071 Some people say anything to justify paying all the money they did for the originals. 😂
No me lo creo esto huele a fraude lo siento
this is a terrible shootout... seriously.... you might as well not do it.
Terrible comparison
