    For anyone curios, a PID controller is a controller that is used in many industrial processes or various kinds of machinery. It stands for Proportional Integral Derivative, which describes how the controller is constructed mathematically. The PI-part determines how quickly the state of the process is changed (the temperature in this case) while the D-part is there to soften out any oscillations that might occur. The convenient thing about a PID controller is that it doesn't require any physical modelling of the machine itself, instead it's just a matter of fine tuning three different constants. Some controllers even have the ability to fine tune those constants by itself as more measurements of step responses are made.

    "...well, they're good for a lot of things."
    You might be my favorite mushroomer on youtube next to Brian Callow.
    Aside from the obvious reasons, you make this all less intimidating for beginners. You explain it in easier to understand terms, and it is really appreciated.

    Hey Jewell,
    I don't know which you check more between here or personal email but I shot you an email recently about this same question.
    Is Soybean hulls the same as Soybean meal? From what I can see, (under the impression that hulls resemble more of those hard wood pellets) and what you mentioned (@4:32 about the texture/mixture being fine), i wonder if it's something I can get away with using.

    There's a video somewhere on TH-cam of a guy that uses just cold water hydration without the lime with hardwood pellets and inoculates heavily, but he has a 55 gallon barrel setup as vertical compost mixer that mixes it up easily just by rotation. I just don't have the space for a big barrel composter in my garage.

      Thanks for sharing, hadn't seen that video yet. I wish he would have did a follow up video on exactly how his batch did but he's only posted foraging videos in the last 4 years since. My thoughts on that- I've tried lime tek with very limited success, the shrooms were off colored and sickly looking vs my normal batch & it was like half the weight I would normally get. His batch uses 3 bags of spawn which is really expensive (call it about $50 with shipping). If you're doing this as a business that tek is definitely NOT the way to go. There's a reason small (and large) commercial growers sterilize their batches! If you're just growing for fun as a hobby to see what happens then the $50 of spawn & cost of pellets isn't that big of an issue I suppose. On the upside I do like his barrel idea for mixing but I think it would need an agitator of some kind to mix up 2 different subtrates (ie pellets & soy hulls) evenly

    • @Palainah
      @Palainah 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jewell's Funky Fungi
      I think it would mix fairly well because it tumbles like a concrete mixer. Could also use a cheap concrete mixer or a small mortar mixer that's more like Myers mixer.
      Yeah, that is a lot of grain bags for one small run. He says he doesn't use lime though, but like you said, results would be great to see.

  • @harrywarrick
    @harrywarrick 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Solid video introduction. One thing to remember is that with many pellet manufactures they use oils and other ingredients when they make the pellets. Some of that you may not want in your substrate for the mushrooms. I use mushroommediaonline.com for bulk orders of the oak pellets. They are even going to offer the soybean hulls starting this month.

    Thanks for the good info, but isnt it better to fold the filter patch inside so it wont get wet when sterlizing? I put them wrapped in so they are water proof from the bag, u seem to do it otherway around 😏

  • @mbarker_lng
    @mbarker_lng 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just wondering: For the initial hydration of the wood pellets couldn't you just put a tap in the large basin, fill it with water to above the top of the pellets, open the tap and let it drain out naturally? Obviously this should be done outside, but I'd think you'd be left with wood mush at 'field consistency'. Is this too wet for your grow? If this is OK, you could fill the basin fast and save some time.

    Awesome vids! Thanks for sharing. Just getting started growing. Hope to do some oysters to start. I can get hardwood pellets easily but soybean not so much.
    Can I use only pellets for a substrate? They are easy for me to get, very cheap and I dont think they need to be pasteurized/sterilized because they should be pretty clean from processing. I think they are probably dried in an oven after they are extruded... I could use a bit more spawn to make sure. Thanks for any advice...

      Tom Bailey My pleasure! Yeah I’m pretty sure it’s the same thing just compressed in pelleted form. I’ve never found those but they would be much easier than what I have because I get a lot of dust everywhere vs just hydrating the pellets like the fuel pellets. If anyone knows otherwise chime in!

If you use the link to finally purchase the book I get a little compensation on that (at no additional charge to you). So yes, substrate is mixed, bagged, sterilized (I use a drum steam sterilizer because you can only fit a few bags in a pressure cooker. Spawn it when cool. Let colonize then fruit it 😄

    Take it from an old construction worker the best way to mix in those two ingredients or any two ingredients if you wet the the pallets make a great big hole in the middle in drag the sawdust up on the sides or on the ends put dumping a bucket of the soy stuff and then mix it in one side at a time dragging folding over the sawdust into the soy it'll make so much easier and you should get a big hole with two holes in it you'll have that mixed in a couple of minutes. Also I would have to different tubs when you got it mixed to a certain amount shovel it into the other tub which will mix it even better and then shove it back into the first time again it'll be thoroughly mixed that way. Of course a small electric cement mixer would probably be the best idea

    6:05 those words: "how you program it" just make me sad.
    Earth has had fungus much longer than upright walking mammals, but to grow mushrooms now we need a computer?
    I'm retired. Had 30 years of computers, the closest I'll come to anything with a chip is this phone in my hand. (And often I consider throwing it off a bridge into a river as I ride by on my carburetted motorcycle with magneto ignition)
    OTHER THAN THAT - you've got a very interesting & informative channel going. I believe you started it for the best reason, to help our fellow humans. If you decide to take it big, I def wish you the best.
    Now, even though I'll probably never start growing mushrooms, I'm going back to finish this video ❤
    Edit: I see this vid is 3 years old, so I'll leave the past an visit your channel on a more recent vid to see what you're up to.
    Edit #2: 14:16, now you're talking my tech.

    Guess if you could find an even bigger can, you could use it for measuring, and then put the bag over it before flipping it over.

    someone told me to compost the substrate for 21 days before bagging and sterilising is that necessary? or I can just mix 50/50 of sawdust and rice bran? then sterilise and inoculate?

    Hi. I see they sell soy hulls loose and soy hulls in pellet form. Any preference on which is better? Same price for both. Thanks

    im gonna be starting with wheat straw, red millet as spawn, and spent brewers grain as a supplement to replace bran . id love any input, thanks

      JaxFungiFarm I don’t have any experience using straw and certainly not grain but I do know that as of now, on a commercial basis, masters mix (50/50 sawdust or hardwood fuel pellets and soybean hulls) is hands down the best recipe in terms of overall yield and appearance/health of the mushrooms. If you’re growing as a hobby, go for it and try!

      @@JewellsGardens yeah I'm definitely growing on a commercial scale, I see that Brad kuhns runs a commercial farm and uses a lot of straw logs, i see he runs masters mix too tho,anyways I guess I'ma have to pay 900 a ton for soy bean Hull from branchway feeds (sad face) thanks for the reply jewell

      i noticed that the soy bean hulls have 40%fiber (85% of which is digestible) while coco coir has 85% fiber (60% digestible) everything else is the same within a few percentages. I am going to try supplementing some in my straw. going to use 50% wheat straw, 30% coco coir, and 20% spent brewers. I believe this will be a superior (to only straw) substrate. Wat do u think?

    Hey how do these bags not melt? Some people say they have to separate it from the sides, but you seem to just rest them against the metal sides. No melting occurs?
