    been searching up mushroom info for almost a year & this video popped up today, no idea why youtube skipped out on showing me your channel for many months, I'm feeling like I have missed out on some realistic info.
    going to make my way through your video library.
    Thanks !!

    I have to say that I am really enjoying your videos and your enthusiasm. I have not gone through all your videos yet but I will and look forward to it. Two things I have not heard you bring up yet as far as running your own business is insurance and incorporating to protect yourself and your families assets. Good luck and keep making these videos.

    The person who criticized you clearly did so out of spite, or to generate a reaction. You are an inspiration to anyone who grows anything--not just mushrooms. I grow microgreens. But I appreciate your insight in business and your acumen as a grower. I've always been fascinated by mycology. It's a very difficult thing. So I appreciate anyone who is successful like you at doing it. Godbless.

    Subscribed! Thank you for the numbers! Good to see it is profitable on a small industrial scale.
    I'm thinking of growing mushrooms on a micro scale for fun since I have extra unused basement space. Maybe after I know what I'm doing, I could sell to a few to local restaurants.

    Love this. Never seen a video where someone breaks down there finances and thought processes for their business. I've always been pretty good with money and business focused so I get what you are saying. I don't have the experience so I'm sure I would miss alot, but it is good to hear your thought process. Eventually want to be an entrepreneur of my own and this helps with confidence as much as understanding.

    Thanks for your background. Respect! Thanks for running all your numbers for us. As an ex business consultant, the numbers are totally important and can't be ignored. Another consideration is the population base one is selling into. I live in an area with a population of about 30,000 people. I'm in the considering stage of starting a mushroom business. So I'm thinking starting a small part time thing at first. To get to your numbers, I would have to move to larger city for sure. Subscribed due to this video. Thanks for sharing.

    I was sorry to hear about your composting problems. Here in the Pacific Northwest the spent blocks can be a small profit center. Landscape suppliers specifically advertise mushroom compost, and the same take for free all the yard and tree waste one can bring (within reason). To have pay for disposal is disheartening. Good luck.

    Replace a filter on at least one of your hoods if your going to make spawn. So you have a fresh filter to do the agar work and transfer.

    • @JewellsGardens
      @JewellsGardens  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      agreed. i wish i had bought the filters with the good price you sent me the link for:) . i'll be doing more grain to grain to start though

    • @MyersMushroomsFarms
      @MyersMushroomsFarms 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea when i shared it with you and brad it was like $190 shipped. That listing was a special request from me to the seller. Since then he has re listed them in volume but at $279. I try to keep an updated ebay listing on my lab supplies kit and there is one currently listed if you want one, I wouldn't mess around with spawn especially on a scale of yours without having a new filter. Also work really slow when doing spawn, when in doubt throw it out. If you handle a plate or bag wrong just toss it aside, boo hoo $1 in bag and grains wasted, better than $500 in mushrooms lost. kit.com/MyersMushrooms/flowhood-and-lab-supplies

    I’m only in the experimental stage. I wanted to try making my own spawn and then it would be a modular hobby.
    I inoculated my own seed (safflower) with lions mane spores. Things are looking really good so far. They’ll be 3 weeks old this Saturday. I ordered my first bulk substrate bags and I’m going to make my sawdust blocks this weekend. Love your videos.
    Wish me luck!

  • @Laotzsa
    @Laotzsa 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your negative at 200 pounds at 8 dollars? $1600 a month and your still negative? How much you spend on your business a month? Over $1600 sounds intense; besides electricity and grain for spawn / sawdust block materials, what else could you be spending on? Water? Rent? I guess if your accounting for rent... Just sounds like a lot to run something that has seemingly low overhead costs

    So it's hard watching these videos post pandemic. It just shows you that business is always risky no matter how carefully you plan it out. I also understand there was some drama with your landlord that you couldn't have foreseen. It makes me really afraid to try to make money farming mushrooms.

  • @KatherinePotter-ui1tx

  • @AaronAlso

    Honestly, if you aren't all in on this thing, if you don't have the passion for mycology and mushroom cultivation, if you aren't isolating your own mono cultures from spore and fruiting them out, don't even bother getting into the business. You will drown yourself in numbers like this poor lady has and will have no passion or motivation to push you to innovate.

    Thank you very much for the information and sharing; I really appreciate your efforts. Interesting that I was reading up on net profit percentage goals a few weeks ago. Great timing! If I recall correctly, you gave your cost for fuel pellets and soybean hulls in your last video, which seemed a bit high. At my location I can buy hardwood fuel pellets and pelletized soybean hulls for $200 and $220 per ton, respectively ($4.40 and $3.99 per 40 lb). In the future you may want to consider looking into the cost of getting setup to buy and handle your substrate in bulk to increase your net profit. If the material flow is setup properly, you may save on time and labor as well.

    • @JewellsGardens
      @JewellsGardens  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thunderbolt Farm so are yours bagged or are they going in a silo? I’m at lunch now and can’t remember the exact breakdown although I know it’s $12 total for 40lbs of each. I get a pallet delivered. There’s only one place in my area that sells soy Hull so I’m stuck with that price which takes up most of that $12 ☹️

    • @thunderboltfarm7099
      @thunderboltfarm7099 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      $12 for both the fuel pellets and soybean hulls makes sense and is a similar price. To start with, I will be using a blower system to move the substrate from a bin on the floor to my mixer using 40 lb bags. In the future, I plan on designing a silo system using augers to move the substrate directly into the mixer.

    • @JewellsGardens
      @JewellsGardens  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thunderbolt Farm sounds cool! You know I’m not at all handy like that but it sounds like a plan! My buddy has a silo and has an auger to move it into buckets, then hand dumps in the mixer just because they’re not in the same location

    I am coming from a place to be helpful, if you paid someone else to do the work you do, what would be the profit?
    What volume will you need to afford a sales person? How large would you let this business grow to? What is your exit strategy? *Maholo*

    Interesting breakdown I am also figuring out how to spawn on grain at the moment, ordered a lot of samples online of various different mushroom types on grain spawn and dowels I think some were contaminated, either that or my sterile technique was rubbish, could be either, instead of ordering samples of spawn on grain to begin with I should have ordered the agar plates samples, much easier to see if its a good sample or not to start with so you can eliminate that as a cause of contamination.

    • @JewellsGardens
      @JewellsGardens  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      May want to consider buying grain spawn for the time being until you get lab work fully worked out. Definitely need to have good flow hoods & filters when making your own spawn just for starters!

    Yes, you are easy on the eyes, but more importantly I enjoy all the information you share with us. I think sometimes people mistake enthusiasm for inexperience, you know every spring when new goats are born, I'm still giddy as a schoolgirl, and it's been like 15 years.

    Lmao I'm a CFP and know what I'm talking about when it comes to numbers well 3x4=12 so $10.00 a pound at 300 pounds a week Is $12,000 a month in sales not $13,000.

    • @rmaynv9458
      @rmaynv9458 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Don't be so smug as you got this completely wrong yourself. There are 52/12 = 4.333 weeks in a month, not 4 weeks. So $10/lb at 300 lbs/week is $3,000/week, times 4.333 weeks per month = $13,000 per month in sales. She is correct.
