Genuinely genuinely pisses me off when fix you came out and everyone loved it, I screamed at anyone who'd listen (I'm fun at parties) that a band from our own bloody town had recorded a better song, Newborn, and it deserved more. Anyway I got distracted by likeminded individuals here, sorry... Any Day Now rocks in concert too.

This song is the Oxford English Dictionary response to "use poignant in a song". Has been on my Spotify list for ages and everytime it kicks in, my brain pools in my boots grabbing my heart on the way through.

Guy Garvey wrote this song in the late 90s. Fast forward to today and millennials are neck deep in this shit, and now even Gen Z are feeling it. We are all the lost generation. The sooner we expect it the sooner we can realise we have nothing to lose but our chains.

calm down jack, im pretty sure he means getting out of his hometown, being frustrated that his art hasn't opened the world up to him. maybe I'm wrong and it's open to interpretation but you're going massively left into this weird political agenda. we're all benefactors and victims of capitalism, yes...and this system is heading towards doom. but that's just life isn't it. get outta here with your Jordan Peterson, Joe Rogan bullshit.

Thanks to KEXP.org, I caught on to them back when this album first came out. saw them live several times. First time in a small Seattle club where I met them all and had great conversation. They are truly talented, neat guys and I'm so happy for their success.

On most bands videos I don't get why people complain so much about Vevo and the ads, but there's something so pure and awesome about Elbow that means when I click on a video and expect Any Day Now but get some over-happy American woman telling me about 'page rage' I do feel rage.

I kinda feel the same.. but there are a few other groovers .. see below.. probably closest one first. The 3rd one is least like this.
th-cam.com/video/q2k5EfLPB3A/w-d-xo.html (the lyrics on this track are some of the very best written ever, anywhere in my opinion.. absolutely brilliant. Don’t turn off before chorus….
….The man on the door has a head like Mars
Like a baby born to the doors of the bars
And surrounded by steam with his folded arms
He's got that urban genie thing going on
He's so mercifully free of the pressures of grace
Saint Peter in satin he's like Buddha with mace)
th-cam.com/video/rYdGAv_ZQZ0/w-d-xo.html (sometimes there’s beauty in simplicity)
      th-cam.com/video/zXwHHtS5ZJ4/w-d-xo.html (just .. just…. )

They've certainly become a bit more whimsical which I think reflects Guy Garveys romantic leanings; their recent albums have fewer rock songs on them. This has an indie band vibe to it and that's not a sound I've found on their reent output.

every time i hear this song i am asking myself whether they tuned the snare to fit the song or if they wrote the song to fit to the snare drum or if it's just a coincidence that that drum groove tonally fits to the song...

    • @chordorchard7213
      @chordorchard7213 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Mark Hollis talks about timbre being often more important than precise parts or perfect playing etc. This track (and many other early Elbow songs) have all the little hallmarks of that tentative but muscular, extremely tactile approach Talk Talk made their own. I think as much as it being technically in tune with the song, the rattly, fuzzy, unique snare sound was almost definitely deliberate and specifically "got" rather than arrived at by accident. And I'd guess it would have been that way round (deliberately tuned to the pitch of the track for recording rather than the song pitched to the snare...). Beautiful song. Takes me back to playing with and meeting these guys in 2001.

MTV New with Joanne Colan. That's where I heard Elbow - and this song - for the first time.
The song itself is very well composed, every instrument, everything inside is interesting. That's what I love about it. Reminds me of Radiohead's Ok Computer, where I believe Thom said something in lines it was too much. Too much work, too much thinking, sometimes a nightmare trying to make it "perfect".
    Anyway, Elbow - love em!
